Name: Marcus Gideon
Nickname: Pending RP
Age: 18
Birthday: March 14th
Sign: Pisces
Gemstone: Aquamarine
Blood Type: O+
Fav. Food: If the dish was made 100+ years ago, he probably likes it. Or, he tells himself he does.
Hated Food: PSL, deep fried bacon, pretty much any ‘fad’ food. He is a snob, he will like them when they aren’t popular anymore.
School: DCU History major
Hobbies: Old Sports - There's something attractive about javelin throws and discus throws. Track is still great, and he'll participate on the DCU sports team, but old or ancient sports hold a special place in his heart for their cultural meaning and foundations. Many current sports fall under the brim of old sports, like wrestling or handball or racing, and he likes these especially for their history. That said, he also enjoys sports no longer practiced today (and these ones are special, even though hardly anyone knows what he is talking about). He tries to make time to be active for a couple hours each day, for physical fitness reasons and for personal sanity.
Historical Reenactment - Marcus will participate in those old civil war reenactments, but his heart lies in far older historical periods. If he could, he would live in period reenactments for months. It isn't uncommon for history majors specializing in a certain period to spend weeks living as if part of that time period, and Marcus is crazy enough to want to do this without getting paid to do it.
Podcasts - Podcasts are the only way to learn and jog at the same time, he decided. Most of these podcasts are oral dramas published by smaller parties, and he greatly enjoys partaking in them on the bus or train, when sedentary in a coffee shop, when outside enjoying the sunshine… He would listen to podcasts in the shower if he could. Historical dramas are great, contemporary dramas are great, audiobooks of influential tales or even high fantasy are similarly great. Oh, and he would talk someone's ear off about them too.
Virtues: Assertive -- Marcus knows no passive trends. When ignored at a restaurant table, he will speak up and flag down the waiter rather than continuing to wait until service was provided. He similarly stands up for himself and others in situations where he perceives one person to be wronged, and yet they are not taking the proper steps to rectify their situation. He does not spare his interest in supporting others for friends only, but will extend this kindness to even strangers, or those who have wronged him in the past.
Personal Cheerleader -- Not only does Marcus himself like to succeed, but he likes to see others succeed. If he can do something to accommodate this, if he could help someone get where they want to go or be their life coach at the eleventh hour, he'll do it without a single complaint. The act of allowing someone close takes a great deal of trust, and a measure of respect to listen to what that person has to say and to allow that person to motivate you, and Gideon understands this. Perhaps that's why helping others during these times is so fulfilling and magnetic. Regardless, if one needs a little extra motivation to transition from mopeypants about tomorrow's exam to actually studying for it, Gideon is there to facilitate.
Patient -- Gideon's patience is a specific beast - he is patient with others who need time to come out of their shells, to apologize, to get comfortable. He doesn't mind having to wait for a friend that got caught up in traffic and is two hours late. He himself is not in a great hurry at any one time, knowing that Rome wasn't built in the day and the world will far outlast him. This patience does not extend to waiting in lines past reasonable limits, dealing with bad attitudes, or seemingly malignant forgetfulness. The beauty of his patience is that it is
within reason that he will exercise it.
Flaws:Oversteps Boundaries - Standing up for someone else by proxy can often lead to confusions regarding personal boundaries on the matter, and miscommunications (think the grapevine rule). It's often unintentional that he steps into someone's space or exposes them to something they're not ready for (like a confrontation about brewing animosities), but occasionally he does so because he thinks that's what's best for them. Unfortunately, Gideon has enough faith in himself to think that the more timid of the populace may not know what's best for themselves. Additionally, Gideon oversteps boundaries in physical spaces, sometimes emotional spaces, but rarely in academic spaces (ie he tries to leave people alone when they're studying, and not force help upon them).
Impractical - There are certain standards that today's living holds, and most adapt to these standards with relative success. Some of these standards include having a cell phone, being familiar with the internet, and knowing how to operate around today's social situations. Gideon often remains behind these standards by choice, preferring not to have a cell phone and adopting cultural customs from years past. He will expand to today's time only as much as he
has to, and will make it clear that if he has to use this tablet then goddammit everyone will know how much he hates having to use this ugly brick and how it sucks and how he could've gone about this paper-writing business with a fine parchment and pen.
Snobbish - If it's trendy, he doesn't want it. For as much as Gideon tries to distance himself from popular culture and remain 'outside the norm', he frames himself within a different kind of culture and is privy to all the same disdains and restrictions. Turning one's nose up at pumpkin spice lattes or twitter or Game of Thrones so vehemently ostracizes him from others his age, with whom he may otherwise get along. Maintaining this disdain for popular culture for no good reason other than it's popular also serves to open him for rightful criticisms. Gideon never really internalized the phrase 'don't knock it 'til you try it'.
