Most days Manny had enough projects, books, and homework to keep himself occupied. Today was one of those unusual times where he had finished the last one he had checked out, leaving himself without a drop of reading material.
Along with a small group of Freshlings and a caretaker, Manny was led to the library. It felt like a second home, almost as cozy and comfortable as his single room. Ever the patient child, he waited until the caretaker announced they could start looking for books and to meet back at the front when they were ready.
The first stop was of course the science wing, those books dedicated to stars, galaxies, space. Book stacks hovered overhead, giving the little hybrid a sense of enclosure and safety. Only words and friendly pictures. Or, not so friendly if they were medical books.
"What should I read next...?"

Fena loved the library. He loved the smell of books, the feel of a new book in his hand--even the feel of an old book. The edge of their pages were so nice, and he felt like he was making a connection to all of the people who had read the books before him. Mostly he read fictional books--chapter books, for the most part, but anyone who'd grown up as he had, raised by a former science teacher, loved science books as well.
He'd explored a lot of the library's collection, especially their books on fish. He liked fish. He loved the way they swam. They'd gone to the aquarium a few weeks ago, and he felt like he could have watched the fish there for hours. So although he had checked out the book on sharks and rays, like, a million times, he decided he'd check it out again. Maybe this time he'd even read it instead of just looking at the pictures!
He trotted over to the science book section of the library, his tail gently swaying back and forth as he looked up at the shelves. Right, so, the books were sorted by subject, which sadly put fish on one of the shelves out of his reach. No matter. He pulled a stool over to the shelves, right under the fish books. He was about to climb the stool when he saw another student perusing the books. He smiled and waved, then paused. The other freshling probably hadn't even seen him! "Hullo!" he said softly, minding the library's noise rules. "My name's Fena. Um...were you asking for suggestions, or was it just a rhetorical question?"

"Wha?" Someone was speaking to him, but from -- Oh! Manny looked up and was startled to notice another freshling on a stepstool so close. Immediately a dark blush covered his cheeks as he sank into his hoodie just a little more.
"O-oh... No I wouldn't..." No! That wasn't right at all. Asking for suggestions was a wonderful way of expanding your knowledge.
"I mean not like that I... I wouldn't..." Did that make any sense? Oh, wasn't it annoying to not finish your first sentence? Swallowing, Manny dropped his eyes to the ground, wishing he could sink into it. Talking as unnecessarily hard sometimes!
"N... N-nice to meet you." Okay well, skipping the subject all together was... Not a smart idea, but at least it was something, "M-my name is Manny. I... I think it was rhetorical? B-but... I... I would love to hear your suggestions." There we go, full circle. Though there were some casualties, mainly his cheeks which were now practically on fire from blushing so hard.

Fena bit his lip. He'd made the other student nervous! He hated doing that. The hybrid looked like he wanted the earth to open up and swallow him right now, and that hadn't been Fena's intention at all. All he'd wanted to do was say hello to someone, make a connection--maybe make a friend? But he'd failed at that miserably. Oh well. He tucked the book on rays under his arm and sat down on the stool so that he wasn't looming over Manny.
"It's nice to meet you, Manny," he said softly. "I'm sorry I startled you like that. And, um, if you'd rather be left alone, that's okay, I can shut up. But if you would like a suggestion..." He gestured to the shelves. "Well, I've read a lot of these, um, mostly the books on animals and stuff. But my little brother says that the books on stars are really nice." He hesitated. "Um, there's a really neat book on tropical fish up there--I can get it for you if you'd like. It's got beautiful pictures and fun descriptions of all the animals that live on a coral reef. So long as you aren't afraid of, like, sharks or eels or stuff, it's a really nice book?" He really did not want to frighten Manny or embarrass him again!
