Once upon a time, Izume had thought that one school was much the same as any other. That had been her experience. She'd moved around a lot as a child, three different primary schools, and then, once she'd moved up into high school, she'd changed schools once again. This time, however, it had been because she'd gotten herself expelled. Whoopsies. Her parents had been furious, of course, and they'd threatened her, of course. Threats the teen hadn't actually taken very seriously, because she'd assumed, wrongly, that the school they threatened her with, would be like all the rest.

That was not the case!

Months later, settled into her classes and..barricks--and wasn't that just a little slice of hell??--she had to admit that she probably should have tried a little harder to behave, and not started that whole fiasco with the stray dog running a muck in the lunchroom. Romano's, misleadingly labeled a finishing school, was more like a military boot camp, with mandatory classes and homework. It was a particularly cruel little slice of teenage hell.

Or at least that was how Izume saw it.

She was once again lamenting her poor luck in the lunchroom after 20th century history. Chin resting in her upturned palm, she was poking at her cafeteria ravioli, rather than eating it. Violet eyes glazed over as she stared off into space.

Lovina knew how to smile, and she wore one every day. Today, her smile hid her teeth and reflected in her eyes only slightly. She considered this her approachable smile, since most people responded well and figured her free enough to interact. Today, however, her classmates remained too absorbed in their own discussions to be inviting her anywhere. It was common, she knew, and the unspoken aversion went both ways.

Lovina didn’t dislike her classmates, they just weren’t a part of her social sphere. And they couldn’t be, either.

So as she carried her tray, smile in place, she sussed out her company for the day. Clarissa looked absorbed in her current boyfriend, Katie said she had a test come Wednesday to study for, Gina never really liked her company, and the clique that constantly chatted up the back of the room during History wasn’t accepting strangers at this time. Pickings looked slim - the losers were already carved out to the corners of the cafeteria and ostracized. She’d been careful about how she spoke of family and after-school activities to avoid this classification. They weren’t an option now, as she didn’t want to lose all the options she still had. So, she would simply have to pick from the ‚undefined‘ - the people who failed to become notorious, popular, noticeable.

Lovi spotted a prospect as she was scanning the aisles, and ensured she didn’t stare. Instead, she looked about the room serenely, as if watching the other social groups commiserate their shitty grades, and walked down that aisle with tray in hand. When she grew close to the purple-haired girl, she made a faint „oh!“ as if she just discovered a dollar on the ground, and flashed a warm, open smile to her chosen company. She recognized the girl from her 20th century history class, though they were assigned desks on opposite sides of the room. She seemed spunky and willing to upset things in there, and Lovi could appreciate that.

„Hi! You’re in my history class, right? Izume?“ As if Lovi didn’t know already. „Can you believe that last test? I didn’t study like, at all about Boris Yeltsin. Writing a short essay about him was nuts.“ She set her tray on the table and seated herself, circumventing the whole digging-for-invitations jig. „How about you? How do you think you did?“

It was the soft smack of Lovina's tray that startled Izzy out of her stupor. She jumped, spoon falling with a slight clatter onto her own tray, and made a grab for a napkin to mop up the few drips of sauce that had hit the table as a result. "Uh, hi." What had she said? Something about history class...and what was her name?

"Yeah," she'd confirm her name, gaze flicking to the side briefly as if she weren't entirely sure what was happening here, then back to focus on the other teen. Lovina, that was her name. She sat on the opposite side of the class, near the window. They were the same age, same grade, but didn't share the same barracks. At least, she didn't think so.

Done with the napkin, she set it on the tray again and reached for her bottle of water, taking a drink before answering. "Well," she seemed to be gathering herself, relaxing into her seat, a small smile starting to bloom on her lips. "Probably not too well. I got bored half way through and just started biullshitting the answers for kicks." It wasn't a major exam, and the classwork and homework she'd been doing up to this point would help to even her grade out. Probably. If not, well, she'd just have to apply some actual effort to the next one.

Retrieving her spoon, she scooped up a ravioli. "Don't we have English together too?"

“Sounds like we both bombed.“ Lovina eyed her nails, polished clear with small heart stickers on each one, as she repleid. „I can’t wait to be done with this class. I don’t see what 20th century history has to do with anything. When will I need to know about Russia when I’m an adult?“ She sighed. Romano’s was the compromise between her father’s wishes and her own, since it advertised useful knowledge and real-world skills. Since she’d been enrolled, she encountered the same cultural limitations hat the rest of the gadje forced on her. It was, she found, a lukewarm result for both parties.

Lovi cracked open her carton of apple juice first and nearly downed it in one sitting. „Mm,“ she started just before she finished drinking. „Ah, I don’t think? To be honest I just transferred into that English class, so I haven’t gotten used to all the faces yet. The last English teacher I had was a racist a*****e.“ Nails tapped her chin.

„I’ve got to say, this place really drives me up the wall sometimes. It’s so weird to just be stuck in this place all the time. Like it’s choking us to death. I can’t wait to get out after class and have a life again.“ Picking up her plastic utensils, Lovi started on those same raviolis that Izume spooned through. After cutting one in half, she forked it into her mouth. Tasteless, as usual. She tasted better canned s**t. „And the cooking sucks. Least they could do is let us have a hot plate.

„But, whining doesn’t do a whole lotta good, you know what I mean?“ She waited for the response, as Lovina hoped to recruit someone on a foray out into the real world.

Izume cracked a smile, shoulders rising in a small shrug. "Something about learning from the past, I think, but if they wanted us to retain the information, they'd have picked better subject matter." History had always been pretty hit or miss with the petite teen. There were parts she enjoyed, usually the darker, gorier bits, but the rest? Ugh, she just couldn't seem to make the effort.

"Hmm." It was an agreement, the best she could do while chewing. Izzy felt the same, trapped, but it wasn't as if she hadn't been working out a way to help fix that little problem. And it seemed perhaps Lovina was of the same mind.

Eyes lifting to the other girl, Izume watched her speculatively as she finished chewing and swallowed. "No, whining doesn't do any good." She scooped up another ravioli without giving her tray more than a very brief glance, but didn't eat it yet. Instead it sat suspended on her spoon midway between table and moth. "You've either gotta accept things, or do something about it, right?"

“Right!“ Lovina confirmed enthusiastically. This girl got it - they couldn’t just sit around and take what Romano’s pushed on them. Thin fists bumped gainst the counter lightly. „If we want things to go our way, we have to do something about it. The problem is, they’ve got us penned in so much that there’s not a lot we can do.“ Ditching wasn’t an option since they imposed such a low tolerance rule for it, expulsion often meant the end of every teenage life ever, and acting out in class meant more chores than they already had. So whatever they decided to do, it had to be subtle.

But ‚they‘ was taking it a little far. She barely met Izume, even though they shared class together for months. Still, Lovi could invite her along to see how Izume got on with the idea. They didn’t have to go breaking rules just yet.

„Hey, you know how we get time off once our classes and chores are over? I’m going out as soon as I can. You should come with me - there’s tons of stuff to do in the city, and we can just take the bus over. It’ll take like, fifteen minutes tops, and then we’ve got a few hours to do whatever we want. My dad gave me some money last week, and I don’t know about you, but poledancing lessons? They’re right up my alley.

„And! If things go great, I know some people who can hook us up with something better.“

There was, Izume had discovered, a stretch of lawn that had very little survalance after midnight, but she didn't offer up that information just yet. Loving seemed the sort of person that would appreciate and know what to do with that knowledge, but first impressions could be misleading. She'd wait, see how things worked out, see what sort of person Lovi really was, and if that personality included ratting out rule benders or breakers.

Which wouldn't be too difficult, given the invitation that followed. "Oh yeah, sure." It was the first bit of honest excitement she'd shown since Lovi had sat down, but it wasn't like tests or ravioli was anything worth getting enthused about.

At the mention of pole dancing she had to laugh, but not like she was rejecting the idea. "I'd do it." Why not? It was supposed to be great exercise, on top of, well....

"What time?" Barring certain projects, homework wouldn't be an issue, and her chores never took very long.

The day was looking up.

"I'm thinking around like, seven." Lovi tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I've got some chores to finish. They can't tell us no if we leave by their rules." She sighed. Playing this game of lockdown was nothing like what she expected when she first signed up with the school. Her father hadn't bargained for it, either. Maybe they were both a little too eager to fulfill their own ends.

"We can meet outside the auditorium. Maybe by the bleachers? I know you can walk down to the bus stop pretty easily from there. The rest of the place is like, Surveillance City. We can count on getting stopped a couple of times anyway, so we should maybe come up with a good reason for leaving. I'm thinking new winter clothes. I have such a hard time giving up shorts and tank tops, so if I wear some of those out and we run across the supers, we can just be like… "Oh, Lovi doesn't have any winter clothes so I'm taking her shopping" and then get out of here. Sound good?" Lovi thought it did - and most any teacher who knew her was aware of her need for tank tops and shorts.

"We just have to get through the rest of Boring Day Number Four Hundred." Lovi spooned another ravioli into her mouth. God, she couldn't wait to eat real food.

Or even be around people that weren't stuck in military gear.

Whilea nod here and there was given as Izumi listened to Lovi's plan, and she'd take the few moments it provided to finish up the rest of her ravioli. There was nothing but the sauce by the time the other girl had posed a question, and the Izzy was peeling the top off her chocolate pudding. "That sounds fine to me. And isn't even a straight lie, cause I'm pretty sure I need a new pair of boots, anyways. The ones I have aren't waterproof anymore." She could pick up a new pair, but if they didn't end up shopping, it wouldn't be a big deal.

"So at the bleachers at seven," she'd parrot back, dipping her spoon into the pudding and scooping out an almost dainty bite(there was never enough).

She gave a thoughtful hum as she licked the pudding off her spoon. "At least we're half finished. Only a few more classes to go." It wasn't like her last school, where playing hookie was as simple as walking out the front doors. There has been very little security to speak of. Or supervision.

Which explained why she'd been transferred in the first place.

"Ugh, I know. I'll be so glad when I'm out of math class. I can't believe they made it my last class of the day! what a drag…" She pondered her luck for a moment. Dropping her spoon on the tray, she decided at last that she couldn't keep dwelling on their plans much longer. Lunch was drawing to a close, and then she and Izume split off to the rest of the day's affairs with only their 7PM meeting to look forward to.

"Alright, see you then!" She flashed Izume a smile before she stood and gathered up her tray. Lunch proved unappetizing as usual, so some of her food still remained, and she had to watch how she carried her load. With the tray wedged against her hip, she bade her new cohort a wave. "Don't be late or I'll take off without you!" A laugh, and she beelined for the trash can.

Next is what? Chemistry? Snore. With a sigh, Lovina departed for the double doors that led back into the disciplined lives of every Romano's student, but she did so with her chin held a little higher.
