Oh, the joys of a delicious well-cooked meal! The Chosen had been back from the Bayou for just over a week by now, and Sylvia still couldn’t get over eating real food again. She was so pleased with every visit to the Hearth. No more rations, no more worrying about poisoned food, just delicious indulgence. Yum!
She was humming as she made her way to the Hearth for lunch even as the Autumn closed in around her, a chilly breeze nearly permeating the sweater she had worn that was not-quite-thick-enough. She didn’t care. The Hearth would be warm, and the food would be too. A smile grew across her lips as she finally came close enough to catch the aroma of waiting food. She hardly even looked at anything else then, so focused on her desire to eat, barely aware that there might be other Chosen nearby with whom she could become more acquainted. Even she noticed her singularity and wondered vaguely if she’d skipped breakfast, but no, she definitely hadn’t.
She finally reached the doors and hurried inside, taking a deep breath and sighing it back out again. Every day eating at the Hearth was a treat. She wasn’t sure how long it would take her to get used to it, but it was still her favorite perk to the whole Chosen thing. Perhaps that was bound to happen when all you could make for yourself was sandwiches and ramen, though. She glanced around only long enough to find a mostly empty table, making sure that most of its food was still intact before she claimed her space on one of the benches and grabbed a plate to begin.[ 280 words ]

The moment Zebulon and Diryas got back from the Bayou, Zebulon asked if they could go home to Maryland. He was tired of the Bayou and, frankly, he wanted a break from this whole "Chosen" thing. They could go back to being scientists for a while. Just normal researchers. None of this hocus pocus transformation magic god crap. Not that toxicology research was the most normal field, but to him? It was exactly what he needed. He and Diryas came back for a weekend at the Prytaneum after a week back at home, and one of the first places Zebulon went to was The Hearth. Besides for the Labs and the Athena Dorms, it was one of Zebulon's favourite locations of the Prytaneum. They had tables and tables of hot, delicious food, and Zebulon had to admit, he liked being able to eat delicious food without having to cook it or chase it down himself. The table he had sat himself down at was relatively empty. He figured it was because it was lunch--people tended to eat lunch at varying times between the late morning and the early afternoon. Zebulon was fine eating lunch by himself, of course, but the sudden presence of someone else sitting themselves across from him didn't pass his notice, and he looked up from the food he was currently eating. She looked familiar. He squinted. Oh! She was the one who pulled Diryas away. Right. If she lifted her head towards him, he offered a casual wave.

And look up she did, after gathering enough food and finally realizing that there was someone else at the table. She glanced up and offered a smile and a wave of her own. For a moment, she didn’t realize that she recognized him; after all, it had been a while since the Alps, and they hadn’t exactly spent a lot of time together. Once she did realize she might recognize him, she paused, and then it finally clicked.
“Oh, hello!” Her smile widened with the realization and her eyes brightened. “I haven’t seen you for a while. How have you been? How is your friend?” Sylvia picked up a fork and began prodding the lettuce in front of her, making sure the dressing was mixed in well. She took a bite before another wave of realization hit her, and she tried to swallow quickly. She looked back up at the man across from her with a worried brow, “I’m sorry, I don’t think we ever actually introduced ourselves. I’m Sylvia.”[ 170; 450 total ]

Did she recognize him? Not that Zebulon would be offended or anything if she didn't. Zebulon didn't necessarily consider himself to be extraordinarily memorable, and considering the rushed, panicked, beaten conditions they met in, he probably would have been less-- Ah, she did. Zebulon shot a bit of a grin when she asked how he was. Even more so when she asked about his friend. Before responding though, he responded to her last question. "Zebulon. Nice to meet you officially," he offered something of a playful scout's salute as a substitute for a handshake, considering he had little interest in trying to reach over the middle of the table to shake her hand. Besides, there was food between them... "I'm alright. Just about done with swamps and snow for the next eon, though." He took a moment to take a bite out of his food, before continuing, "Diryas is doing much better, thank you."

Sylvia grinned and swished her hand in a little two-fingered salute back. Zebulon~ She was hearing so many interesting names since coming to the Prytaneum. It was refreshing to not meet a million Sarahs, Rachels, Michaels, et cetera. It was fascinating, too, to wonder at the many different origins they all must have. Someday she might ask after the few, more unique names. For the moment, food and a sense that she wouldn’t be the first to ask such a question kept her from delving further.
She chuckled and gave a nod. The Alps had provided more snow than she would ever hope for, and sooner in the year than she ever would have welcomed, and the swamp was on the other spectrum of environmental displeasure. She, too, was over them both. Unfortunately, she had a sneaking suspicion that they would deal with one or the other much sooner than they wanted to. Probably snow. It was getting colder in Michigan already.
She gave a single, pleased nod at his update on Diryas. “I’m very glad to hear it. I was able to visit him once, at least – I thought I’d just be dropping off flowers, but he was awake, so.” She shrugged. They’d gotten to talk, at least, and she knew a bit more about him than just that he was that guy she saved in the snow. Somehow that made her feel better about it. She liked knowing more. Hopefully he didn’t mind knowing more about her as well.
Sylvia watched Zebulon with soft eyes for a moment, then decided to give into her curiosity. “You seemed very worried about Diryas – I mean, understandably, but a bit moreso than one might be worried about someone they just recently met.” She knew there were a few cases of other Chosen having known each other before they came to the Prytaneum, just from hearing in passing. She assumed that perhaps this was another of those cases. “Did you two know each other before all of this?” Hopefully it didn’t seem like she was prying. She really just wondered about people. Zebulon admittedly knew his name wasn't overly common. There was a town in North Carolina he shared his name with, though. One of the North Carolinians at his university had joked about it... Sylvia had visited Diryas? She must have come by when Diryas had managed to get him to go away. He'd have to ask him if anyone else had come by later. "I'm sure he was glad to see his saviour was alright," he offered, with a vague swat to the air. "Don't mind if he seemed a little standoffish. That's just his way." If that didn't answer her question about him having known Diryas before coming here, perhaps the laugh afterwards did. It wasn't necessarily a mocking laugh, though his tone was teasing at best. "Nah, I just met him like a couple months ago and decided he was my best friend forever." He let that sit for a moment before a smirk cracked and he more accurately replied, "We know each other very well, trust me. Known for years even."

She smiled a little. “Good to know.” She hadn’t found him stand-offish, exactly; she might have called him reserved? Maybe that was close enough. He had also been in a makeshift hospital, though, so she didn’t expect too much from him. Still, it was nice to know more.
Sylvia rolled her eyes slightly and chuckled. Perhaps her question had been silly, but she couldn’t help it. You never knew. Some people who had known each other for only weeks since joining the Prytaneum already seemed incredibly close. She took another bite of salad and gave Zebulon a look that accepted his teasing, but also encouraged a real answer.
When it finally came, she gave a satisfied nod. She didn’t need to know specifics, of course. What a small world it was after all. “It’s so interesting that some Chosen knew other Chosen before they came here. Given the entire world to choose from, I wouldn’t have expected it.” She shrugged. Then again, perhaps whatever it was that they all had, whatever ‘greatness’ they carried, was drawn to others with a similar inclination. Who knew?[ 184; 984 total ]

It was admittedly strange that there were people that knew each other, overall. He could guess why he and his partner were chosen, but-- Sure, the degrees of separation from person to person were not usually ultimately that large, but to have several here with no degrees of separation? That was interesting. Were these gods looking for preexisting camaraderie to bring them closer at the onset? Zebulon shrugged it off. He wasn't going to pretend that he understood what the Greek Pantheon was on. Athena told him he was here to learn, anyway. Maybe he'd learn their logic too. "Whatever is going on in their god heads, I think Athena chose Dise and I for the same reason. We're both the same profession and while we don't work in the same area of the lab, we do both work in the same lab. Maybe it's a benefit we know each other." He was putting an odd amount of emphasis on the word know. Zebulon swirled his spoon in his soup bowl. "I'm gonna assume you didn't know anyone else here, then?"

Sylvia squinted ever-so-slightly at his emphasis. There was something about it, clearly, but she wasn’t yet interested enough to call him out on it. She didn’t feel the need to know exactly what he was talking about; if she had missed something, she had only met them once each, really, so she was under no illusion that it would take much longer to really know them and have their information committed to memory. Still, if he kept emphasizing it… well, she’d probably ask eventually.
She shook her head, “No, everyone has been completely new to me.” She tilted her head a bit, fork hovering over her plate as she considered what the alternative would be like for a moment. “I’m not sure if that’s better or worse. I feel like it would seem surreal to find someone I knew here… Then again, it would be nice to have someone familiar I could talk to about all of this.” Sylvia gave a helpless sort of shrug, an odd smile on her lips. She couldn’t really compare her thoughts on the matter to someone who was lucky enough (or not) to know someone else here.
Though, wasn’t that a thought. It was one thing to know someone else here, and to get along with them. But what if someone arrived and found that their ‘sworn enemy’ or some such was another Chosen, meant to fight alongside them, someone they would have to work with? What a mess that could be. So far there didn’t seem to be too much conflict in the ranks of the Chosen, thank goodness. Her mouth became a bit lopsided for a moment as she voiced her thoughts; “It’s a good thing that the Chosen who have known each other previously seem to like each other. Could be a mess coming into this with pre-existing conflict.” The missions provided enough conflict as it was.
She took another bite of salad and adjusted a bit in her seat. She gave Zebulon a curious look as she swallowed. “So, you’re a scientist?” He’d mentioned working in a lab, so she hoped that he wasn’t opposed to her asking a question or two about it. Of course, he could always choose not to answer.[ 373; 1,357 total ]

Zebulon did catch her eyes narrow for just a moment, and he couldn't help the small smirk that formed on his face once again. He was definitely trying to hint at something or other. "Well, I can say it's good to have Dise here, besides for the danger aspect." And beyond all his smirking, that actually seemed to be the honest truth. He probably owed some of the Chosen at least some of his deeper honesty, he supposed, considering the situations they had been universally been through. "Besides, the implications of not being able to talk to him about this are alarming." Zebulon couldn't imagine trying to be a Chosen without Diryas around. He'd have no one to fall back on, really, and not only that, but he'd be hiding an absolutely massive secret from his own husband. That was the way relationships fell to pieces. He could sort of see why no one else here, so far as he had been able to gather, was married. Anyone who could handle that level of secrecy in a marriage may need to wonder about their relationship itself. It should never come easy to keep something major private from a long-term partner. She did have a point that all of the preexisting relationships so far seemed to be friendly relationships. "Gods probably trying to avoid conflict within the ranks if they can." He couldn't see that lasting, though. Gods, from what he could tell, did whatever they wanted. If they wanted two conflicting people? So be it. For a moment, Zebulon considered not answering her question, but he shoved his privacy bubble down with his next bite of food and replied, "Yup. Toxicologist." After only a moment, he returned, "And you? What d'you do?"

Sylvia gave a smirk of her own. She couldn’t be sure exactly what the relationship between Zebulon and Diryas was, but they were obviously close. If he was concerned about not being able to talk to Diryas about any of what happened at the Prytaneum, well… there were very few relationships that would be thrown off by such. Not that she didn’t have her own worries about friends and family at large not knowing about this frankly huge new part of her life, but there were certain people you just couldn’t exclude in such matters. Her best guess was a significant other, particularly the sort you lived with.
She gave a nod, “It’s at least worth a try. I’m sure they’ll eventually have to deal with conflict, whether preexisting or cultivated since arrival and interaction with others here.” Her brows furrowed for a moment, “Actually, I’d be surprised if they haven’t had to deal with it at least once already. But I guess that depends on how long they’ve been recruiting people…” She wasn’t actually sure of the timeline, just that there had clearly been a number of Chosen before the influx of their group.
Sylvia hummed, “Sounds very interesting.” She took another bite of food before answering back, “I’m a marriage and couples counselor.” She was still counting it as her ongoing job even if she was on a long hiatus, still sorting out how she would juggle that job and their new excursions.[ 245; 1,602 total ]

The more people in one place, the more likely there would be conflict. In his opinion, conflict was inevitable. She was right, 'eventually' they were going to have to deal with conflict. It was only a matter of time. Honestly, Zebulon was a little surprised there weren't more heads butting already, though maybe it was their shared traumas of metal birds and personimal-filled bayous that were keeping them more friendly and less fighty with each other. He took the chance to eat a bit more food while listening to what she was saying. Couples counselor? Maybe the gods did plan on bringing more married couples in. Or maybe they figured that fighting was inevitable in the couples that would inevitably form among the Chosen themselves, too. "Aphrodite, then?" It was an easy assumption for him to make. He wasn't sure who else would want a couples counselor. Maybe Hera? "Maybe she's thinking ahead for those eventual conflicts you mentioned." He took another spoonful of food and winked. "I mean, stick people together in one environment long enough and people are gonna eventually start hooking up, right? That's the human way, sexual attraction and all."

She gave an affirmative smile and nod when Zebulon guessed her patron. It probably was easy to guess which Goddess had chosen her, though she’d never really thought about the correlation. How had she not made such an easy connection? Well, she hadn’t really put a lot of thought to it – she probably would now.
It wasn’t a stretch that the Gods might have recruited her to help with inevitable conflicts, either; that, however, made her wonder why they would choose her over anyone else. Still, he was right. There was plenty of chemistry already between a number of the Chosen that she had noticed. Not all couples needed counseling, but she wouldn’t be surprised if someone eventually did… Or if any Chosen married to someone who wasn’t also a Chosen needed advice for how to balance their two worlds. For which she honestly didn’t have any good advice off the top of her head… She would deal with that only if she absolutely had to. She knew there was a reason she didn’t want to tell everyone about her career.
“I definitely anticipate plenty of Chosen hooking up – and I doubt it will take very long.” An amused smirk crossed her lips, at least. She took a deep breath, her eyes widening slightly as she considered another bite of her lunch, “Hopefully I won’t get called for every potential relationship.” She threw a playful glance at Zebulon and took the bite of food. Giving into at least a little bit of seriousness, she scrunched her nose, “It can get pretty messy, though. On top of everything else we have to deal with… well, we can at least hope for some decent compartmentalizing.” It wouldn’t make anything come to fruition, but they could hope.
“I suppose if there are issues, it will help having a toxicologist around…” Sylvia flicked her gaze to meet Zebulon’s, an playful little smirk on her lips. She doubted it would come to that – most people weren’t stupid enough to try to poison their enemies – but it still couldn’t hurt to have him on their side to help.[ 352; 1,954 total ]

Getting called in for every conflict would get annoying. At least, it'd annoy Zebulon. Probably why he wasn't a counselor. Well, that and several other reasons... "It's probably already started, the hook-ups anyway," Zebulon laughed, dropping his spoon into his emptied bowl and kicking his seat back. "Hopefully not the conflicts though. We have to deal with enough s**t anyway without relationship crap." At the mention of having him around to help, he nearly cackled. "Dise's a little better at the synthesizing cures aspect of the job," offered Zebulon, honestly, with a wink. They did, after all, work in different parts of the lab in different areas of research. "I can certainly tell you how dangerous a toxin in someone is, though." The glint in his eyes was a little odd to say the least, fascinated for a moment by the prospect of getting to analyse what a group of maliciously-minded Chosen could come up with, but he quickly squashed it as he pushed his chair back onto the floor. Randomly, he added, "By the way, about the s**t to deal with, thanks for getting Diryas out of the way. Don't think I actually thanked you." He squinted. Did he? That whole fight was just a red angry blur.

Sylvia gave a heavy nod – conflict would just be a pain on top of everything else they had to deal with. It would happen, there was no doubt in her mind, but there was also no doubt that it would create way more of an issue than it was worth. She would probably do her best to put some people in their place and put the real issues into perspective if they let a fight get in the way of one of their excursions. She probably wouldn’t be the only one hoping to do so, either – at least, she hoped so.
Her mouth was full when Zebulon mentioned that Diryas was better with cures, but she gave a tilt of her head that indicated her reaction: ‘Good to know.’ She bit at the growing smile that crossed her lips at the twinkle in Zeb’s eyes. She could not at all blame him for being fascinated by his field, even if it was the ‘uglier’ side of toxins that he studied. The science behind such things was fascinating, after all – knowing how and why things reacted the way she did. Sylvia could appreciate that. She would, however, of course, continue to hope that they wouldn’t need either of the scientist’s services.
“Oh!” She honestly couldn’t remember if he had thanked her either, but it seemed an unnecessary thing to say. At least, she required no thanks. “Well, yeah, you were pretty upset – understandably.” To say the least. She offered a genuine smile, “I don’t remember if you said so either, but of course, you’re welcome. I’m glad I found you, too, after…” If nothing else, his thanking her said enough about their relationship as far as she was concerned. It was nice that he thought to thank her for helping Diryas. “I’m really glad he was okay after all that.” It had been a strange awakening – to go from being told that they had some sort of godly protection to having to actually test it out. And there had been so many people in the infirmary after. She was glad everyone had made it back okay.[ 355; 2,309 total ]
