As he sat in wait, Scholomance felt his whole body throb. The wind bit, though he bundled up accordingly. His arm itched in places he could never scratch. His thoughts ached, somehow, and he couldn’t make sense of that himself. His gums felt swollen beneath the half-mask.

From where he waited, in an unused courtyard between apartment complexes, he could feel no other signatures. The appointed time had not yet arrived; the message sent from one of the Negaverse agents demanded that he wait at this location for Xenotime and one other officer. The reasoning for it remained unknown to him, despite pressing for answers in badly-scrawled papers. The captain who delivered the message knew not why. Were he of sound body and mind, he’d have found it funny - the Negaverse proved much too adept at compartmentalizing their knowledge across their officers. He started to wonder - how much of his predicament went on a ‚need-to-know basis? Or was his use to the Negaverse considered a privilege that only certain officers undertook?

It didn’t matter, he decided. Thinking it over offered more frustrations than answers. He leaned back against the long bench and tried to cross his arms, though only one responded to his urge. The pool on the opposite edge sat placid and untouched by the fair winds above. Soon, Xenotime would come.

Soon, Xenotime would come, with her officer in tow, and she would put him to work as expected if he wanted to ‚earn‘ his ring back. Briefly he wondered if that offer included the rest of his body.

That didn’t matter, either. The evening grew bitter as its chill deepened.

While this particular situation fell a little outside her realm of experience, and did not include her own team, it was still within the boarders of what could be considered the general's skill set. The agent, some new lieutenant she hadn't me yet, was in need of a little one-on-one training. The training itself, energy gathering. The circumstances? Peculiar.

Ironically, this wasn't the first time Xenotime would find herself face to face with Scholomance. She'd met him before, when he was a squire. apparently now he was a knight, and, apparently also missing a few...pieces. The extent of which became fairly evident when she arrived, lieutenant in tow, and laid eyes on him in the first time in what had to be close to a year.

"My goodness," she mused allowed, raising a hand to lay loosely curled fingers against cheek and the corner of her mouth, brows arching in interest. "They weren't exaggerating, were they?" Her boots smacked lightly against the concrete as she approached him, circling that tall, lean frame. If he allowed. "That had to hurt." Dark lips twitched up in the corners in amusement. Xenotime thought herself to be quite humorous.

Turning her attention back to the Lieutenant, she held her hand out to him, beckoning him closer. "Saponite, this is Scholomance. He's going to assist us tonight." Grinning, she turned back to the knight, laying that same hand on his shoulder, between the curls of bones. "Aren't you?"

As a new recruit to the Negaverse, Saponite had a lot to learn. When he was notified of his first lesson, he was happy to report to it. It turned out that the lesson would not be with General Benitoite or any other members of his team, as Saponite had expected. Instead he would be working with a different general, Xenotime. And it seemed they would be going out to the city to meet someone else. As he had no frame of reference, Saponite had no idea if this was unusual, but it didn't matter either way; he had his assignment, and he reported to it.

The someone else turned out to be a tall figure clad in dark clothing and bones, who Xenotime as Scholomance. Saponite smiled and greeted him with a pleasant "Hello." He would have said more, but he paused, head slightly tilted in curiosity. Something felt odd about this man. He couldn't quite place why, but there was something about him that felt different from any of the Negaverse agents he'd met so far. After a moment he noticed the man seemed to be missing an arm, but he didn't think that accounted for the different. What was it about him?

Xenotime appeared, and his gut wrenched. Fear was a pointless emotion now, he knew, for the Negaverse could take from him what they wanted at any time. If they demanded his starseed now, there would be no need for these formalities. They would already have it out of his chest by the time his first reactions took place. Besides, murder wasn’t the worst they could do - and all their tricks came in short order. There was no wait period for suffering with them.

Scholomance refused to rise when Xenotime started her rounds about him. He knew not what she wanted, but he doubted it was a challenge - there were plenty of other, more complete knights to fulfill that desire. Was it for the mocking, then? He admitted to himself that it pained him, dearly, to hear someone treat recent events so lightly. The Negaverse bred irreverence. They also found no reason to purge it, even when it suited them.

How disappointing.

Scholomance sighed through his nose when the introductions came, when the implications laced under them like a lattice. He looked at the officer and kept his opinions to himself. This one presented timidly, and not terribly formal. He seemed clueless for the fact that Scholomance was a knight. He wondered, then - did his aura not inspire disgust in the lieutenant? Was that a trait they acquired later on in their careers? Either way, he looked terribly young for embarking upon the path of ruining lives. Finally Scholomance nodded his acknowledgement of the man.

A gloved hand slipped into pocket and produced a thin, leatherbound notebook. Upon opening it, he pressed the book against his thigh with his fist and started to write in shaking, ill-formed letters. State your business. I know you didn’t order me here to chat. He spared Xenotime a pointed stare.

It all just seemed terribly amusing to the general. Not just the sorry state the knight had found himself in, but the lieutenant as well, his reactions to everything. He still had the 'new agent' smell to him, that brightness in the eyes that said he'd yet to encounter anything awful in this role. It would fade, in time, it always did. The shine would wear away, the adorable naivety would wear away, to be replaced by something darker. Fear in some, exhaustion in others. Or, in a lucky few, acceptance and excitement.

With an interested hum Xe glanced down as Scholomance produced paper and pen, giggling softly beside him before stifling the sound with the press of a knuckle against her lips. Mustn't be rude. Well. She waited, patiently, for him to finish writing, then met that pointed stare. "Oh, someone's very grouchy." Her fingers flexed where they lay on his shoulder, not yet causing pain, but enough to remind him of just how very strong she was.

Leaning a little closer, she lowered her voice in an illusion of privacy. Saponite would be able to hear, but it didn't matter. "You're right, I didn't. But if I had, you'd still be sitting here, indulging my whims as you are now. Would't you?" Slender fingers squeezed, just a touch, before relaxing completely, and the general straightened up again, pleased smile sliding back into place.

"Now then!" Back to business, it appeared. "You're here, my sweet little Saturn knight, because Saponite needs a lesson in energy gathering." This wasn't her usual teaching method. She had a rather firm belief in the sink-or-swim ideology, which usually had her pointing her new recruits at civilians or opponents of equal strength, and letting them figure this lesson out on their own after being talked through the process. Saponite, however, was not one her officers, nor did he look especially scrappy. This would be better for him, safer.

Watching the interaction between Scolomence and Xenotime, Saponite got the impression they knew each other previously. And also that they did not particularly get along, since she seemed to be teasing him in a rather mean-spirited manner. Saponite couldn't see what Scholomence had written - could he not speak? or did he just choose not to? - so he was only getting half of the exchange, but it did not look like a friendly one. He hoped that whatever was between the two wouldn't turn ugly, because he really had no idea how he'd respond to that.

So he welcomed the topic change when Xenotime introduced the lesson. He'd heard, briefly, that gathering energy was important to the Negaverse, and everyone was expected to do their part. He would be happy to do so, and only needed to learn how. So he smiled and said, "Yup! How does that work?"

Something Xenotime had called Scolomence seemed odd, though. "Saturn knight," was it? Saturn was obviously a planet, and also a god in an ancient pantheon. Greek, maybe. And knight was like in medieval stories, unless she meant night, like nighttime. None of the words seemed to go together. As far as he knew, it could just be some kind of nickname. He doubted it was important and tried to just focus on the lesson.

When Scholomance returned Xenotime’s look, only tiredness remained in his gaze. Only a short week passed since his maiming, and his spirit flagged and struggled to keep pace with his body. A knight’s power hardly extended past his physical capabilities.

He blinked slowly to her taunt; he knew from experience that attemting to dance around the Negaverse or deny them their whims entailed utter disaster. Hell, he was a walking billboard of proof. Her display of force proved unnecessary for this reason, and he tried to ignore it. Bleakly he stared at the gap where he once had a finger, and tried to remember what it looked like. The nail was squared off, often grew long, and a nuisance to cut into the rounded shape of the rest of his nails. The joints often stuck out harshly, suggesting the scrawniness of the muscles between each knuckle. He tried to remember if he had a mole beneath the second knuckle on his right ring finger or his left, but soon gave up when he heard Xenotime wind around to business.

A lesson in energy gathering - he sighed in mild relief. No great task would be asked of him today. Briefly he wondered if she would consider it rude of him to ask for a ride home once they finished their work with him.

When Saponite confirmed her words, Scholomance only snorted. Flipping a page on his notebook, he started on a message to the boy. The poorly-scrawled writing was soon held out to him. You’re asking the wrong person. Ask her →

Scholomance’s eyes narrowed; he wondered precisely how knew this recruit was. Days? Weeks? Months? He looked like he carried hardly a thought in his head just yet. On another page, he wrote his followup: do you know what I am?

The general would be more than happy to show the new lieutenant just what he needed to do to help powered beings and civilians alike from their precious energy. Of course, not every attempt would be as easy as this. The knight was, more or less, a willing donar for their purposes, where most would not. Still, Scholomance was a good subject for the purposes of teaching the very bare bones basics, which was what they were after. Saponite wasnt her's, so there would be no baptism by fire. Alas.

Still smiling, she held her hand out to the new recruit, beckoning him closer, though the sound of pen against paper drew her attention down agai, and she'd pause to read the question the knight posed, then further as he displayed the paper to Saponite, curious herself.

Maybe there would more than one lesson on the docket for the evening. That was fine with Xenotime. She didn't mind giving the lieutenant an introduction on knights as well.

In response to Saponite's question, Scholomance wrote something else and held it out towards the Lieutenant, so he leaned forward to read it. The man's handwriting was terrible (which was not surprising, considering how he was writing), so it took Saponite a moment to make out the message. Once he did understand it, he said, "Oh! Yes, I did mean the question for her, sorry for not being clear." He smiled apologetically and straightened up, looking to Xenotime for instruction.

The scratch of pen on paper called his attention back to Scholomance, though. It seemed he wasn't done "talking" yet. Saponite waited patiently for the next message, but once he read it he cocked his head, brow furrowing in puzzlement. "Um, no, I can't say I do," he answered. Nobody had really said, as far as he knew. Was it something he was supposed to know? There seemed to be quite a lot he had yet to learn about the Negaverse. He looked over to Xenotime, looking for her reaction to his lack of information.

Scholomance sighed behind his half-mask. The damned thing was tight enough that anyone could tell he lacked teeth. He wondered, briefly, if Xenotime expected him to give the information on knights to the new recruit, but he elected against doing so unless specifically asked. He wanted to know what the Negaverse knew of his faction, regardless - whether they viewed it as cohesive, orderly, threatening, or if she might mention the Code piece they retrieved back in the summer.

He sensed that he interrupted the training with his questions, so the pen and paper were both stowed in favor of ending the lesson more quickly. He wanted to be able to walk home tonight, and dragging out the lot of this only counted against him. The knight leaned back against the bench as best he could, and rubbed the remaining muscle of his arm. The weather proved unkind, as did the recovery process - often he felt shooting pains through the whole of the limb, even if the rest was no longer attached.

And while Xenotime took the floor to explain and demonstrate, Scholomance would remain silent and compliant. This was, he figured, the easiest of his duties under the Negaverse's watchful eye.
