The day had been long and arduous; full of packing for a trip she was beginning to think would soon consume her. Mnyiri was equal parts excited and dreadful of her adventure to Yael, but for the most part she just wanted to go already. What was the point in hanging around?
Waiting on a caravan to take her south, that's what.
With more than a days worth of time to kill, the young researcher decided to pay a visit to Dyakida. It had been a little while since she had last seen the other, and...well, who didn't like random visits from the younger sisters of friends in the middle of the day?
She knocked once, then twice upon Kida's door and waited for a response. Hopefully she wasn't in the middle of a project; at least, not one that would have required the utmost concentration. Otherwise Mnyiri had pretty much shot that to hell.

Dyakida had just finished a project, one that had required intense dexterity and laborious focus. Now, she sat downstairs, soothing her fingers in a bowl of mostly cool water, pillowing her head on her arm. Her stomach rumbled vaguely and she shifted in discomfort. She was hungry, and there was no one to make her something to eat - not that she couldn't make something herself. She just didn't want to. Unfortunately, there were no easy-to-eat snacks in the house that didn't require knifework - one of those things she dared not train Peyla to do. So, she figured she'd just starve until someone got back and made it for her. Eventually. She lifted her head at the knock and blinked blearlily. "Hello?" she called out. Her Sisters shouldn't be back this soon, should they? "The door's open."

Mnyiri gingerly nudged the door open and craned her head to peep just inside. At first she didn't see the speaker; not until she done a near complete sweep of the area did she spot Dyakida and wondered how she had been able to miss her in the first place.
"Hey Kida, it's Mnyiri." She pushed the door open all the way then, and slipped inside before closing it behind her. When she turned back to the older alkidike she noted just how exhausted the other woman appeared. "Are you okay? You don't look so good."
Mnyiri crossed the room and knelt at Dyakida's side, reaching up a hand to brush some dreadlocks away from her face. "Hard day?"

Painted Moose Alternate Title: Dyakida Has AnOff Day "Oh! Hello Mnyiri." Dyakida rubbed her face, trying to wake herself up a little. "Mmph." she removed her fingers from the water, shaking them out. Even that was too much effort for the moment, though, and she wished she hadn't as they rebuked her for her hard work. They were probably red, possibly swollen. Dyakida didn't want to know. Still, she managed a wave in the direction of the door, then turned as she realized that Mnyiri was actually right there. Oops... she thought, embarrassed at how slow she had been on the uptake. Normally, she tracked people better than this. "A long day..." she said, tiredly, "I'm fine... how are you?" she asked, smiling, "It's been a while since you dropped by..." sudden concern crossed her face, "... was I expecting you to come today? If so, I apologize, but I'd quite forgotten..."

Mnyiri clucked her tongue as she looked down at Dyakida's swollen, over worked hands. "Oh Kida, look at your poor fingers." She understood the drive to finish a task at all costs, but that didn't mean that Mnyiri liked seeing her friend so exhausted. "Put them back in the water; I've got a cream that I'll put on them after they've soaked a little more. It should help with the ache."
The warrior stood then, and moved to walk away, looking around for a cloth to dry the blacksmith's hands once they were done with their soak. "It has been a while, hasn't it? I just thought I'd stop by before I went away for a while. I'm - oh no, this one's too dirty- going to Yael to document - oh now here we go - the elaria."
After finding a nice, clean cloth she moved back to Kida's side and waited. "Have you been working all day? When did you last take a break? Did you even eat?" Keeping Mnyiri's mind on one subject alone was impossible. Just looking at the exhaustion written in every ounce of the smith made her ache for the other woman.

"My fingers? They're fine." Dyakida lied, putting her fingers back into the water with some relief. It was probably a good thing that Kida couldn't see them, if they looked as awful as they felt. "... The cream would be appreciated, though. Thank you." she said, too tired to hide her embarrassment. "Yael...?" Dyakida responded, as much a question as a statement. Yael... that was so far away. She had only heard of the dangers of that place in rumor and legend - beasts that erupted from the mud, poison in the very earth itself. She roused her mind to make words, questions, conversation, but it moved slowly. It had busied itself with arrows and blades, bowstrings and spearshafts. Words sunk into it like soft sand... "Hmm?" Oh yes, the subject had changed. Dyakida fought to keep the previous subject anchored in her mind - it required a response. "I... erm..." When had she last eaten? When had she last taken a break? "I'm not sure." she said sheepishly. That wasn't a good sign. "But I think I'm hungry." Her stomach rumbled in noisy helpfulness as punctuation. "I had so many comissions..." she said, trying to defend hersef, "And there was this fine crystal to work with, and..." she winced as her fingers twinged. They would be okay. She hoped - was sure - that they would be. They'd been worked harder.

"To study the elaria. I'm going to prove to the elders that I have what it takes to live here, whether they like it or not." Mnyiri sat down on the edge of the table, setting the cloth across her lap, before gently reaching over to coax Kida's hands from the water. She clucked her tongue and muttered something under her breath about overworking before drying over Dyakida's hands.
When Mnyiri felt them dry enough she pulled a small pouch from her hip satchel and dipped two fingers in, catching enough of the salve to rub across the tops of both hands. Then, using her own hands, Mnyiri started the process of massaging it in.
"You are allowed to take breaks, you know. Especially to eat. And if anyone gives you lip just tell them to go somewhere else. They won't, of course; I don't know of anyone who would choose someone else's work over yours." As she worked Mnyiri took a look around, trying to formulate some kind of meal she could whip up. She wasn't the world's best cook - not even a third best or fourth - but surely she could make something edible.
"You're going to make your girlfriend very sad if you can't hold her hand because your fingers are swollen."

"Mmm...!" That massage felt good on her fingers. Funny how much of her soul was poured into her hands - she could feel the whole of her body relaxing, just from the soothing of her poor hands. "Mmm..." she blushed a little at the admonishment. "That's... true. I could argue that my weapons are my break, but that wouldn't be really true..." her eyes narrowed, "... of course, if there was someone to massage my hands like this, I think i would be taking more breaks." she quipped and wondered, idly, if she could somehow get Mnyiri to do her neck? Would that be too forward? It, too, was stiff and tired. "Well, at the moment, I have no one to hold my hand." she said, a little shyly.

Mnyiri delighted in the reaction she ebbed out of Kida. She made a sort of breathless laugh, and used the pads of her thumbs to really work out the kinks while her long fingers slipped in and around the other woman's.
"Well, I'm holding your hand, aren't I?" Mnyiri crossed her bare legs at the calf, and leaned a little closer to Dyakida. A few of her bell-dazzled dreads shifted, giving out a little chime. "And as long as I'm around these hands are going to be taken better care of, got it?"
And once she had her worked out well enough to suit Mnyiri then she would see about making some dinner for the poor woman.

"Mm, so you are." Dyakida said. It took her a few moments of getting the soreness worked out of her hands to realize that Oh! Yes! She is holding my hands! But did that mean something else? Or didn't it? Huh... Dyakida thought, following the sound of the bells as Mnyiri moved, It could."That means, of course, that you'll come back from your trip." Dyakida said lazily, or perhaps belatedly. "If you don't decide that Matori isn't a better place to live." It was certainly lovely there. Dyakida wouldn't blame a sister - especially one who had to prove themselves to the tribe - for living there instead. Wait..."Why wouldn't the Elders think that you 'had what it takes'?" Dyakida asked, a little puzzled. Mnyiri was a capable young woman, strong of mind and body from what Dyakida knew of her. Why should the Elders have a problem?

"That's the hope, anyway." She finished working out the kinks, at least the worst of them, then guided Kida's hands back to the cloth so that they could just relax. "I think if I survive this trip to Yael a vacation to Matori might do just the thing. Or maybe it will go so badly that I'll want to come back to Jauhar and I'll never leave again." She laughed, but really, that was a worry. What if she never came home at all?
"I'm a quarter shifter, Kida; a quarter weak, pathetic earthling and a quarter 'wrong'." She leaned back on the table then, using one of her free hands to help keep her propped up. "I think they're hoping the Elaria will kill me before I have a chance to study them. That or the extremists; they'll spot me from a mile away. I've told you my hair is white, haven't I? It's very visible."
She shook her head and hopped up off the table. "I knew they didn't want me here, but that as much told me how much they don't like me. So, I'm just going to prove to them that I'm worth it just to rub it in their faces. Now, how about dinner; are you hungry?"

Well that was dark. And ridiculous. She had also forgotten that Mnyriri was a hybrid - one fourth of one. Which meant that Aisha had decided she was worthy twice. Dyakida had many thoughts on the matter of hybrids, but she couldn't summon them into words that didn't feel numb on her lips. "I am hungry." Dyakida said, thinking about the vibrations of the table and the chiming of the bells. "Can I ask you for something first, though?" she stretched her hands gently, lifting them with some reluctance and holding them out, "May I take a look at you?"

Mnyiri paused and made a half turn, twisting her upper half just enough to look at Kida. "Sure, what is it?" Maybe she had a special request? She...honestly hoped not. Mnyiri was a terrible cook, and while she could certainly try something nicer, it would likely only give Dyakida food poisoning-
She watched those hands rise and lift towards her. May I take a look at you? Was there any reason for her to say no? There was so much purity in the act that it brought a softer smile to Mnyiri's face. "Sure, just let me get settled." The younger woman moved in close, bending first on one knee, then the other, until she was sitting up on her knees in front of Kida. Mnyiri reached for her hands, trying not to move too fast, as she often did, and placed them on her shoulders. "'Look' at anything you want; I don't mind."

Normally, Dyakida would not have giggled. "Just your face..." she said, a little embarrassed but, simultaneously, oddly not at the implied for now. Well, and her shoulders too. And neck, if she really felt like being properly specific, which she wasn't. She could feel smooth skin over hard muscle, relaxed but powerful. A graceful neck - much the same - the same steadiness, the same confidence espressed in its pose. But also relaxed. Not stressed - good. Dyakida did not wish to stress her. The chin. The lobes of long ears, pierced but otherwise unmarred. The finely boned face - she could feel the smile under her hands. "Am I tickling you?" she asked, a little apologetically as she felt the ridge of Mnyiri's brow, her own eyes shut tight for no other reason than simple focus.

"A little". Mnyiri tried to keep the bit of a laugh out of her voice, and remain as still as possible. It was virtually impossible for her to remain completely stoic. She shifted a little, leaning from knee to knee but she never moved far enough away to disturb Kida's 'sight seeing'.
"It feels nice, actually." It was like Kida's hands were firm, but also light in their touches. Probing and yet...Maybe it was her years of seeing the world through them that made her that way, but it was far from the bumbling touches she had received in the past.
She moved her own hands forward, sliding her open palms against the other alk's thighs, brushing her thumbs against the insides of her legs. If she got to take a look, then what was really stopping Mnyiri?
