Summary

In this alternate universe the existence of witches has been common since the dawn of time. Rather than being burned at the stake for their abilities, they're extremely integrated into society despite their natural short numbers. They're basically treated the same way we treat modern day professors, doctors and other people who has specialized within a role. As witches and other magic users normally can only master one branch of magic within their lifetime, they're not often viewed as a threat unless they're warlocks or an Oathmaker.

Witches are predominantly female and human, though there have been instances of wizards (the formal name of men with magic abilities) throughout the ages, as well as troll witches, elf witches and mermaid witches. The reason for this favoring by nature is still ongoing within the witch council.

Shamans have their own system, as they don't actually have magic abilities, but are still able to communicate with spirits and provide help with knowledge about the magical. Each town or tribe are in charge of those. Depending on the Shaman and their contributions, they're sometimes allowed to vote on council matters if the witch community is split.

The witch council is in charge of providing formal education to witches and anyone else capable of magic, regardless of their social standing and race. The council are also in charge of making sure that the interests of witches and their issues are being upheld and talked about in a proper manner. The leader of the council enjoys the title of Baba Yaga, and is expected to act as the mother and protector of all witches and their interests. There's a formal voting every time the Baba Yaga dies, and all witches who have been written down in the registry are expected to turn in a favoring note or chip. The council cannot do a formal election without the participation of everyone, which is why... things... tend to take forever whenever something comes up.

Witches receive a basic education from age 8 to 21, and choose a branch to follow when they're 14. At age 16 they're allowed to pick a familiar - a creature who will follow the witch and act as her or his companion until the witch dies. Humans are optional as familiars, but it's not considered a common or smart choice as anything more intelligent than a bird tends to be difficult to command in the long run.

It is to be noted however that witches are not forced to receive schooling, and may indeed reject the offer and continue their lives in their family. If they choose so though, they're highly discouraged from performing any magical deeds, and are given information on how to obtain enchanted items to prevent any possible accidents and suppress their talents. They're also not allowed to take up any formal specialization jobs in their local communities, but this doesn't really stop them from doing "volunteer work". If these witches become a problem however, they may indeed be forced to attend the school.

Upon graduation they all receive a witch hat in their choice of design and color. Many witches spend years gathering ideas for their own hats, while others prefer to get a plain one and sew things onto it as they grow into their roles. Because of this, no hat is the same and is a sign of their individuality, almost like a passport. While not all witches wear their hat on a daily basis, the most dishonorable thing you can do is take it away from them. A witch without a hat has no say in council voting, can't take advantage of the private library and also have opportunity to take advantage of her job's perks and rights. A stolen hat is a big problem, but if it can be confirmed that indeed that it's been taken and not lost by the witch herself, there is a special team who either search the culprit down, or provide the witch with a new hat if it can't be tracked down. This situation is highly unusual though.

Once a witch has been educated and she has received her hat, they're sent out in the world to perform their tasks like a clog in a wheel. After a three year trial, the witch is reevaluated and depending on the result she may be allowed to further her education, continue her job or choose to start her own family.

Higher education for witches lasts another 4 years, allowing them to dive deeper into their area of study. This is the minimum level required to be on the council, and unless you're a witch of decay diving deeper into criminology, a red cloak specializing in non magic-related surgery (which is sometimes needed on people who are either cursed or somehow resistant to magic) or farmer's witch who needs to make her potions excel, these years are more of a formality to get a chance at the council or another high ranking title.

Normally there's only two to three witches max in each county, though big cities can sometimes enjoy up to 8 different kinds of witches. A county without a witch gains the highest priority whenever there is a graduation, but if none can be provide it's not abnormal for the council to shuffle witches around to meet the areas needs. Most of the time this translates to a freelance team or even witches in training with their teacher stopping by for a couple weeks of interning and real life practice.

Types of witches

While each witch is unique, there are some common branches and roles they fall into:

Warlocks : A witch who is duel specialized in explosives, combat strategy, basic offensive pyro magic and healing. Their role is to provide support on the battlefield, focusing mainly on getting troupes and wounded soldiers off the battlefield for all sides involved. They're neutral on paper, but many tend to take sides when push comes to shove. Most warlocks have no advanced potion education.

White witch / red cloak witch : A witch who has specialized in "white" magic. Healing, exorcisms, spell breaking and anatomy. Their signature outfit is a white dress of their own design, and a special handmade red cape with a hood and white embroidery. They most often enjoy the title of midwife or doctor, and have the legal right to move in an out of all houses and homes as they please.

Earth witches / farmers witch: A witch who can control plant life, specializes in botany, potion making and care of animals. Commonly known as the farmer's witch, they often provide assistance with crops, act as veterinarians, make potions that red cloak witches and black hats order, and otherwise keep pests away from villages. They formally dawn a brown mantle and a set of big keys that give them access to most farms.

Pyromancer / cryomancer / weather witches
: A witch who has specialized in elemental magic, either fire manipulation or ice manipulation. Despite sounding like nothing but trouble makers who only cause destruction, their job is to help people fight the elements where the weather is at its' most extreme. Hence the nickname weather witch. They calm blizzards, they warm up towns, they prevent forrest fires, they save people when there's been an avalanche... the best description for them really are the rescue teams of the witch world. As their major is so specific, they're often educated in potion making, hexes and good natured spells to even out their resume.

Clairvoyant / black hats : A witch who has specialized in telling the future, reading tarot cards, spirit communication, summoning and spells. Perhaps the closest to what we think of when we think of a witch - someone who can ride a broom in the dead of night, curse the neighbor, place wards and give you advice about your future husband. They are the Jack of all trades of witchkind, and highly adaptable comparatively to their specialist counterparts. They're also known for picking up their own brands of magic and keep it within their families, making up almost a second witch community that's not job or education focused. Formally, this type of behavior is illegal, but that doesn't seem to stop them. It's suspected that half of all blackhats are indeed witches that were somehow not picked up by the council.

All clairvoyants have a black hat of sorts.

Oathmakers / Duelists / "those crazy bitches" : A proper Oathmaker serves only one purpose --- to act as the fierce bodyguard of the Baba Yaga. Unfortunately these days this isn't the case. Included in the peace treaty was the demand for the witch council to cut the number down to 3 specialists only, and that's what they've done. This hasn't stopped students however from taking on the role and adapting it to their own purposes. An Oathmaker is a force of nature, combining the abilities of black hats, weather witches and warlocks into a pure death combo that serves no purpose besides making sure your enemy dies. As such, not many witches even consider this path, as it doesn't provide any real job opportunities and is generally illegal all across the board. Still some witches take on this path of destruction by becoming duelist; performing blood sports for royals to keep them entertained, or become mercenaries for the cash, or modify their previous education to serve their own purposes instead of devoting themselves to serving others.

Partly the reason why these witches are so strong, is because they don't take on familiars, instead making deals with other magical beings to share their power to achieve a common goal. "Deals with the Devil" the regular folks call it, making these girls seem even more terrifying. Thankfully these girls are often hunted down and taken care of by the council before they harm themselves and others.

Necromancers / witch of decay : A witch who specializes in taking care of the decreased, reanimating the dead, potion and poison making, anatomy, criminology and ancient text reading. Anything dead is their business, which is why they act as coroners, funeral arrangers, criminal investigators and have the obligation to raise the dead when the paperwork goes through. Contrary to popular believes, that's as far as their knowledge goes. They can't curse the heck out of you, nor do they eat babies. They just tend to take the jobs that nobody else wants.

All witches of decay wear the bones or appendages of an animal, most often displaying a small skull.

Sea witches / sailor's witch : The sea is an unpredictable mistress, and sometimes the sailors need a little bit of help to get through their journey. A sailor's witch has many duties - she must see that the sea doesn't swallow them whole, she must help them stay on course, provide a push when the wind is still and see that pirates don't rob them down to their trousers. As a result sea witches are jacks of many trades, but they're all knowledgeable about navigating by the sun and stars, got decent water manipulation skills, know how to place protection wards and otherwise proficient in language and communication skills. Often jokes to be the "men" of the bunch, sea witches are hardy ladies and often boast huge bank accounts if their mission goes well. Sea witches often sport tattoos, flat top witch hats and wear a minimum of three protection charms due to their dangerous job. It's an unspoken tradition for sea witches to wear exposed bloomers.

Navigators / new world witches : not to be confused with new agers. New world witches are witches who have specialized in zoology, exploration of uncharted areas, geography, proper documentation and journal keeping, ancient text reading, archaeology, and spell detection and spell evaluation. These witches are absolutely critical when exploration teams are sent out and into the world. They're basically the Indiana Jones of the witch world. As the world is growing increasingly small, these witches are becoming less and less common out in the field, instead taking up mantles as teachers, consultants, historians and regular office jobs. There is a petition going on within the witch community trying to get the permission of the council to explore other dimensions so that the profession doesn't die out or fall to regular human scholars, but so far it's been rejected.

Beast maker / beast tamers / beast hunters / shapeshifters : a rather unusual group of witches that are able to change their shape with the use of magic and enchanted pelts. Usually this art isn't taught unless there's a big demand for it due to previous accidents with witches being mistaken for wildlife and killed as a result. Besides making these pelts themselves and being able to sell them to others for limited use, these witches communicate much better with animals than a farmer's witch could ever dream of. Their job however tends to fall into either three categories - breeding dangerous and near extinct animals, hunting giant beasts for their skin, bones or other use, or taming them for study or to prevent accidents. This is a highly dangerous profession, and not a lot of these witches live to see old age. The most common animals these witches are able to shift into are owls, horses, koi and bears. These witches are also known for having the most dangerous familiars, with some of the best having dragon companions. Madness I tell ya! All shapeshifter witches have a fur mantle and a skull necklace they carry with them at all times.

Alchemists : These witches specialize in one thing --- magical items. Studying them and making them is their thing, and they're the ones in charge of making hats, brooms, maintaining magical portals, inventing new things that benefit everyone and spell research. They're the only ones with knowledge of making wands, giving them a high position and rank in the witch community. Unlike most other witches, these ladies often collaborate or work in teams. Very rarely do they interact with the outside world.

Wumona Li, Oathmaker - "Dude. Do you, like, ever hear yourself talk? Of course I'm gonna use this to beat the s**t out of people! What else am I supposed to do?"

The most general stuff

Background and shortened bio

Wumona Li's life began rather normally. Her father, Sang Li, was a well respect tax collector, while her mother, Mina Li, stayed at home, running charity clubs for the other mothers their little hometown of Shinagong. Much was expected of Wumona from the outset. Sang hoped to marry his daughter into a higher rank, and placed much importance on her education and manners from the moment she was born, making her a clever and talented girl for her age. Unfortunately, nature had other plans for the little shy girl. Wumona showed strange talent for ice magic and making regular home objects into deadly weapons, and soon enough the witch council showed up at the Li's doorstep with an invitation for Wumona to join their schooling program. With Shinagong growing more and more concerned and frightened of the little girl, Sang and Mina were pressured by the town to send Wumona off to prevent any upcoming accidents.

Wumona didn't take the rejection very well, and with her father still talking about managing to find her a proper husband once she hit legal age, she began to despise everyone around her from her family to her teachers. All Wumona wanted was a quiet life where she could use her powers as she pleased. Moving from one schooling environment to the next did nothing for her motivation for becoming "productive member of society", and she started focusing on more dangerous and aggressive magic than her classmates, preferring to duel and create chaos.

Despite her lack of motivation and difficult "I do what I want" attitude, Wumona remained a great student with high potential. She was to receive her hat two years earlier than the rest, with the council already planning to give her a solid apprenticeship as a weather witch up north as soon as she was old enough to be given a familiar. Rather than taking this as a great honor, Wumona became increasingly afraid of her future and her lack of freedom, and reacted in a way no one saw coming: after turning 16 and going through the ritual of gaining a familiar, Wumona stole a hat and ran off from the school and sacrificed her new friend to gain a new teacher from the underworld, becoming a rogue Oathmaker in the process. Though the experience was highly traumatic for her, Wumona decided to keep going with her decision and took up dueling as a way to let her powers grow, along with taking her new teacher Pasha's advice.

Since then Wumona has focused on growing stronger, evading all law enforcement chasing her, living her life to the best of her abilities out on the arena and on stage where she feels most at home. She's still much too young at the moment to understand the consequences of her actions, and she'll slowly have to learn the hard way that doing things because you want to is going to bite your bum at some point. She's still struggling to grow into adulthood, being quite the spoiled brat with no sense of her own limitations.

Family and relationships

Sang Li, father - Sang is a good man, but harsh, and quite frankly scared Wumona for many years despite never laying a hand on her and never threatening her with violence. He has this air of authority that's hard to ignore, something Wumona can't stand and has no will to fight against when face to face. Sang on the other hand is extremely proud of his daughter, but also highly concerned about her future. He's aware that she's left the witchling school, but not that she's become an Oathmaker.

Mina Li, mother - The only thing Wumona really remembers about her mother is that she was a sociable lady with long legs. Wumona has no recollection of what her mother's face looks like, something she finds very strange indeed. She rarely thinks about her nowadays. Mina is quite stressed over the fact that she had to send away her child, and has been desperately trying to get Wumona back after the news of her escape from the school. So far she has failed to track her down.

Pasha, teacher - Wumona absolutely regret sacrificing her own familiar to make a contract with Pasha, but his advice has save her life several times over, and she deeply respects him and his willingness to let her make her own mistakes. Pasha is taking the whole thing very lightly, not too overly concerned about her well being as he has other goals in mind. The two banter like a married couple. Wumona secretly hopes she'll get to see him naked someday.

Body

Appearance

Wumona hit the genetic jackpot. She's filled out for her age; an hour glass shape, long legs, small waist, ample breast, butt and thighs. If her face wasn't so young and her body so short, it would be extremely hard to guess her age.

Wumona's hair is black, though it does have undertones of brown or purple depending on the light. Her eyes are very much the same.

She's heavy on makeup. Lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, eyeliner, everything. Wumona carefully sculpts everything and puts in a lot of work to keep her skin flawless and pale as possible. She'd dead afraid of catching a tan or freckles.

Wumona's face is very elfish. Clearly defined and plump lips, big round eyes, a small chin and soft features.

Her eyebrows are surprisingly fuzzy, though they're more than often covered up by her fringe.

Wumona's wardrobe is on the sexy side. She loves dresses that cling tightly to her body and more than often her breast are on some kind of display. Wumona has been around the block long enough to know that her opponents are easily distracted by skin one way or another, and that the guys down at the tavern will give her a higher discount the shorter her shorts are. She uses her clothes as a means of manipulation and attention grabbing, completely dismissing functionality to focus on making herself as attractive as possible.

While Wumona does use her hat during duels to signalize that she's indeed a witch, she more than often leaves it behind to put on rose clips instead, as she's a huge fan of flowers and girly items. Wumona's hat is black with a blue and purple tint. After stealing it, she decorated it with a spikey pin made out of never-melting ice.

Health

Wumona is as healthy as can be, with nothing being especially prominent. She's prone to overheating.

Powers and role

Wumona is an Oathmaker duelist who has specialized in turning back time within a short range and cryomancy. Outside of beating people up, Wumona knows very little about cursing and potion making, and she has little interest in academia. No, she prefers making big bucks fighting and getting a whole bunch of attention for being beautiful and successful, something she never felt at home or at school.

Her fighting style is surprisingly swift as she runs and jumps across the battlefield with surprising ease, floats in the air, turns paper razor sharp and otherwise pin her opponents down with chains that spring out of the ground, nail them on the spot with ice stakes and make things go boom. She lacks stamina though, and to compensate she turns back her own time, healing her own wounds as well. It does however require a bit of set up, and without Pasha there to assist and lay down an arcane circle, she has no chance of pull off the time turning.

Familiar/companion

Wumona used to have a peacock familiar named Tristan. He was sacrificed in order to summon Pasha, so Wumona never really became close to the bird. He did, strangely, seem alright with being thrown away for Wumona's wish to become stronger, so most likely he was a much too kind creature with a soft heart.

Mind

Personality

Blunt object - Wumona doesn't like beating around the bush and more often than not voice her feelings as soon as they hit her. She's sad? She's gonna announce how sad she is, and she's gonna point out exactly why and why it's your fault. Being a still growing teen, she doesn't have much foresight and having grown accustomed to not being punished for actions, she often talks her way into more trouble than the average Joe. Thankfully this trait also makes Wumo a poor liar. Indeed --- if stopped by the police for jay walking, she's not bright enough to lie that she's in a hurry... nope: she'll say that she was just trying to get somewhere quicker. Admittedly her mouth works faster than her brain. Somehow though, sass doesn't elude the girl. Indeed, she's quick on comebacks, puns and well placed sarcasm to the point where it's a near art.

Affection hoarder - Wumo likes attention. All attention, but mostly the positive kind. She's first to get on the table to dance, she's the first to volunteer when something is up, and she will pester folks for hugs and just randomly tell them "hello" so they're focusing more on her than their work. She's not fond of being alone or sitting quietly, because it forces her thoughts to wander and it allows for insecurities and fear of the future to grow. If you can convince everyone you're great, you're fun, you're the best, then that's what you become... right? This also makes Wumo insanely attached to people who she feels gives her life purpose and validation, and she's sometimes utterly horrified whenever her friends try to build their own path and "leave her behind" by choosing to live in another country, take up a job that requires them to be around less, or they decide to mature and start their own families and new circle of friend. Wumona is also quick to praise people and tell them openly why she admires them. She's not as desperate to belittle people to make herself look better, and she's bright and sane enough to know that this sort of tactic isn't just in poor taste, but is harmful for everyone.

Quality seeker and surprisingly detailed oriented - It's not a secret that Wumona likes expensive things. Despite having a clear concept of money, she just likes things of high quality and she goes out of her way to inspect everything she buys. If something has a blemish or isn't up to her standards, she's not touching it. If it doesn't look pretty and ain't gonna last, then what's the point? Needless to say that Wumo doesn't glorify nostalgia much and hardly ever hangs onto something for too long... unless it's the good stuff. This is also why Wumona is oddly organized and spends so much time not only grooming herself, but applying oils on her boots, irons out her dresses, and regularly inspects the stitching on her jackets. She also has this bag habit of noticing when others have ill fitted clothes, unflattering shapes and cuts, and generally wear things out of season and fashion. In true Wumo fashion, she's quick to point it out so they can correct their mistake, mostly out of compassion because she herself wouldn't be caught dead in something ugly. Out in the field, this trait allows Wumona to easily track people and navigate through tough areas. She's quick to notice if a place feels off, but she's not as good at reading other people due to her selfish nature.

Alpha on top - If there's something Wumona has been prepped up to be her while life, it's the best. Her competitive spirit has been nailed to her soul, and it's gonna live long after she's dead. While not everything is a competition, Wumona is never satisfied with second place. She doesn't believe in participation trophies. The claws are out when she's battling, playing sports, going after she wants, and nobody AND SHE MEANS NOBODY is gonna stand her way, and pray for those who wander into her path while she's in the zone. Someone sass at her by giving her a dirty look for wearing such a short skirt? b***h, please --- they both know her boyfriend's not only checking her out, but begging to ******** Wumo behind her back. Also that corset adds 5 pounds ABOVE your chest. You do realize that fat goes somewhere when you tighten the lace, right? Bar man --- just give Wumo that one last shot so she can prove she can outdrink the dwarf... she can handle it. She's not puking behind the fence at all. Thankfully, most of the time this will to be the queen of whatever has resulted in Wumona working her butt off to really deserve these things, and she's quick to point out when someone tries to steal glory, cheats or claims they have the right to something that's not theirs. Wumona likes things fair in that regard, but still likes to boast whenever she wins.

What's this about blood and water? - Wumona doesn't put much value on family ties. They don't get any special treatment or privileges because they birthed her or happen to be related by another way. Wumona happily pretends that she was grown like a cabbage. That way, the people she surrounds herself with become family instead. This kind of thought extends throughout her whole life, giving her hope that she can indeed choose who she wants to be instead of being tied by fate. She's not fond of the concept of karma and sin, and believes that most things can't be fixed or undone, but made up for in some way if you have the will to do better. Because of this, she's heavily against death penalties and values the bravery of soldiers and those who're willing to die in duels to the death to defend their honor and their own.

Likes and hobbies

Wumona likes shoes. She has all the shoes.

Wumona chews a lot of gum, not only to clean her teeth, but because she likes the popping sound.

Wumona overheats very easily, and likes to dive head first into snow to cool herself off. How she can just bathe in it like it's warm water is a mystery.

Dislikes and avoidance

Wumona doesn't like mires, bogs and swamps in any shape or form. The smell, the environment, the lack of visibility in the water. All terrifying. Someone please carry Wumo. qAq

Becky. Becky knows exactly what she did. Wumo has the exact same feels for Becky as Robin has for Patrice. It's not exactly rational. Wumona is unapologetic about the whole deal.

Hidden talents

Wumona is surprisingly good at making otter noises.

Current goals and motivations

Really? One has to ask? Wumona is gonna become the best duelist in the world, grab a handsome boyfriend, have lots of money and will get Pasha to strip for her once she's taken over her own little keep and can relax as her pet dragon chases away pesky knights.

Lieselotte Lehmann, Witch of Decay - "Death isn't something to fear, Oscar, but accepted. Not embraced: accepted, and when you do, you may break it down into little pieces and play with it, fighting the urge to create your own abominations in order to look at life's roots. It's a difficult balance indeed, and certainly not for you."
