[ THELAKEHOUSE ]

It didn't feel like any amount of down time could be enough.

But here was the thing: Ernst knew there were problems out there in the world now, that very few people could solve. And he was in a position where - where, yes, he could do something about them, even if he was probably not...the most optimal of choices. And that irked him.

Yet, cowardly as it was, he wasn't really ready, he thought, to go through another experience related to Circe. It hadn't been hard, exactly, but animals weren't his thing - and the thought that he'd be fighting real humans, who wouldn't have wanted to fight him, and who he might accidentally actually kill...it still freaked him the ******** out, if he was going to be perfectly honest. So he'd kind of jumped at the idea of a haunting. Hah. Well - the thing was, if it was a haunting, it was either not a human, or no longer a human, and unlikely to ever become a human again. And it was in a lake house, too, which...well, you know, that meant there'd be a roof over his head.

Still, it wasn't really something he wanted to handle alone. So it came again to his, ah, friends.

🎕 ernst (10:40): how do you two feel about ghosts?
🎕 ernst (10:40): i'm a little tired of animals that might be sentient, etc., and max's files mentioned something in the rockies.
🎕 ernst (10:41): in a lake house, thankfully.
🎕 ernst (10:42): if you're both on campus today, i'd like to contribute to the investigation.
🎕 ernst (10:42): let me know if you're available, darlings!
🎕 ernst (10:47): i'll be at the hearth around 1500.

He'd sent that barrage earlier this morning, and it was now the afternoon, and he'd packed several changes of clothes, a meal that consisted of non-perishable but not disgusting food, his tower shield, and sleeping gear. He'd been a little too anxious to check his phone even though he'd heard a few buzzes signifying some sort of notification. If Davor and Erica came, they'd come. And if not...he could do this alone, probably. Or he could see if someone else was also heading out today.

So long as no one peeked over the wooden door of the stall, Davor knew peace and quiet. Well, relative quiet. Sometimes horses just made noise -- mostly shuffling and snorting and all that. The smell didn't exactly bother him, either, and it was the best place he'd found where he could reliably expect to be left alone. Settled against a pile of straw with a book in hand and a brave mouse nibbling on the food he'd left out, it was almost easy to forget that not too long ago at all, he may very well have found himself fighting a horse instead of enjoying their company. Almost.

The buzz of his phone had startled Davor right out of his reading, the mouse scampering off completely. Oh, right -- as much as he liked his alone time, even he could understand the necessity of being able to be reached at any time. Especially as a Chosen. And sure enough, that's exactly what this was about: Davor didn't so much as bat an eyelash at that smooth open from Ernst. Ghosts, sure. Honestly not the strangest thing to deal with, as was becoming more and more apparent.

After some thought, Davor decided the best way to respond was to just show up. For the time being, he needed to prepare -- something about being around Ernst made him want to be at least a little put-together. Hefting himself up, he paused to make certain no one was entering just as he was about to make his exit, before tucking his book away and stealthing out as well as he could.

    ~

It was almost like being in the military again. All packed up and weapon in hand, Davor made it to the Hearth to meet with his comrade. Comrades? Oh, Erica... she only seemed to inspire more and more anxiety in him, each time they met, but he couldn't deny he'd feel a little disappointed if she didn't arrive. He thought to check the phone but that would be rude, wouldn't it? when Ernst was right there. As always, Davor greeted him with his characteristic solemn nod despite the prickle of fear that always preceded a new mission.

Beaches experienced cycles of appeal to Erica. In the summer months, there was nothing that could compel her to go to one except knowing that those months was her only chance to observe certain species. Even the early morning excursions were unwelcome because you never knew what you were going to find left over from the night before when you turned a corner looking for a nest or just following a crab around.

Let's just say that some people just never developed a healthy sense of shame and Erica had very little interest in Homo sapiens sapiens specimens.

On the other hand, beaches in the fall (and winter) suddenly became great places to get away from people. The last few months, finding Erica on the beach would have been a miracle on the level of the Jesus turning water into wine (which, one had to admit would be a really convenient ability to have); too many Chosen using their time off to tan, laugh, and have their version of fun. Erica had no trouble admitting that her lack of friends or even acquaintances here at the Prytaneum was entirely her fault but, quite frankly, she found it difficult to feel bad about it considering the caliber of people that generally walked these ground. Sure they were probably good at what they did and Erica of all people respected that, but they were a bit... loud for her tastes.

That said, the texts from Ernst weren't unwelcome. She was just here sketching anyways, on campus because it seemed that there were things to do even though Erica wasn't sure she wanted to do them.

Erica (10:50): Cute of you to use military time. Pick that up from Davor?
Erica (10:50): Didn't anyone ever tell you not to mess with ghosts?
Erica (10:52): Or does the philosophy of "I don't think they're real, but I'm not going to mess with them because I'd rather not be on the wrong side of this argument" just not apply to you?
Erica (11:50): Make sure you pack more than just your silk underwear. You did so well last time. Would hate to see your packing progress slip backwards.

Erica arrived, phone in hand, backpack packed for their trip, and axes sharpened and strapped to her pack, at 15:00 sharp. "Time to get ourselves good and haunted. Unlucky for you, my heathen self can't perform exorcisms and if this is really a ghost, I don't think decapitations are going to do anything."
