Laini had stayed far longer than he had ever planned, or dared to before. Skirting carefully around the very edge of where the pride currently resided, he had managed to catch several meals for his daughter. Travailing far firther afield than the pride lionesses did for their hunts, he would be gone for days at a time before retuening with his prize. Kala had been so grateful that he had delayed his exit, telling himself just one more meal for his daughter, one more day of watching his two tiny grandcubs. But he could only rely on luck for so long and he had very early been caught bringing back his last kill. So after sneaking back in to Kala and her cubs he had made sure she fed before reluctantly taking his leave of them again.

He was almost at the boarder and already his mind was distracted with thoughts of his family, his daughter and granddaughters, and his mother who he hadn't been able to locate this time around. He kenw she was alright, and he simply assumed that she was busy hunting for the pride.

Kuhasa had finally been feeling more comfortable and confident in the pride when the drought threw everything off balance yet again. This time, a lioness had died and the other Inselelo had been injured.. and then Tawa had stepped down. Now the pale lion was the only Inselelo, and he had no idea what to make of that. The pride was grateful for the rain but it didn't make up for the losses.

Keenly aware of the increasing burden upon him, Kuhasa resumed his self-imposed patrol around the pride. He was closer to the borders than he had been since his crocodile hunt, and he was surprised to see a lion wandering around. He looked both familiar and foreign, but he was definitely too comfortable. Kuhasa had hesitated when faced with a rogue lioness but there was no doubt in his mind this lion was not supposed to be here.

He watched for a moment before approaching the stranger. He held his head high and managed to conceal the worst of his limp.. Kuhasa wouldn't let himself be an easy target. He could have handled this before being injured, he would still do it now.

Laini caught sight of the grey male approaching from the direction of the pride only after the stranger had spotted him, if the male's determined line of travil was any indication. Mentally cursing himself the large dark ex-bonelander stopped and turned to face the paler lion. At least if he got run off now, he had done all he could for his daughter and her babies. If only he hadn't been so distracted he might have gotten away without being detected, but after so many such secret visits, he supposed he was over due for an a**-chewing, either verbally or even physically. He could only hope this one would let him go with just the verbal warning.

Never the less he stayed standing as the grey one approached, his thick fur not disguising his heavily muscled frame. Unlike his homeland, the Pridelands where he now lived hadn't been hit by the drought and hunting was good. So he was fit and healthy, and had inherited his father's large stature as well as his colouring. With his classically dark mane he was the ideal Bonelander male, and looked imposing enough even when he smiled. The fact that he would rather sit down for a nice chat instead of fighting was something only discovered after he met someone.

The closer he got to the stranger, the easier it was to tell just how much trouble he could be in if it came down to a fight. The lion was large and looked strong and well-fed. At best, Kuhasa was large-ish, not starving and had a bad leg. There was nothing smart about this confrontation, but he was motivated in an unexpected way.

Being part of a pride was strange, but it was finally coming together.

"You're trespassing in the Ithambo'hlabathi Lands ," he said, stopping several feet away from Laini and giving him a stern look. Maybe.. this would get easier with practice?

Laini didn't recognise the male coming towards him, though he could figure out who he was as his daughter had caught him up on the prideal goings on while they visited. This had to be the newest Inselelo Kuhasa.

As the Inselelo came close and informed him of his mishap, the dark lion nodded, windering if it would be best to keep his identity to himself. Finally deciding that yes, it would be best not to give away who he was if he could help it ni order to protect his daughter and granddaughters. He sat down, hoping to show his desire for a peaceful solution.

"My deepest appologies. I have no desire to cause trouble."

Laini sitting down conveyed two conflicting messages to Kuhasa. He was likely not looking for a fight and.. he was comfortable right exactly where he was. His words, on the other paw, assured Kuhasa that he wasn't mistaking an Ahluke or Enda for a threat. Add the vague familiarity of the colors and markings, and the Inselelo wasn't going to let his guard down. He didn't need to see it happen himself to know that a son returning to the pride was the most likely threat to the security of any of the Abaholi.

"Then it would be best if you moved on," he said sternly. He considered adding more but if the stranger's posture was any indication, there was no need to be excessive. What he chose to say was simple fact. If this lion had any business this close to the pride (and Kuhasa doubted it).. he had a chance to state it. Another reason not to push too hard: Kuhasa was, admittedly, curious.

Laini nodded easily, grateful that the male didn't seem like he was going to force this into a confrontation. Standing once again the ex-Bonelander son dipped his head, though he could see the curiosity on the other’s face. After a moment he figured it would be alright to explain himself, so long as he didn’t mention who he was visiting. “I hadn’t intended to cause any trouble, I just wanted to check up on my family. I heard there was a bad drought going on and was concerned, that is all.” He smiled slightly, tail swaying lazily behind him. He glanced back towards the dry and dusty landscape within which his mother, daughters and new granddaughters resided.

Looking back at the grey lion Laini smiled. “Look after the pride. They will need the males now more than ever.” It was spoken softly, a request born from a heart consumed by worry for his family. His sisters and their cubs he hadn’t met. And not only his immediate relatives, but all those that he had known in the pride, the lionesses he had grown up with, the friends he had left behind.

Kuhasa's ears perked up at the confirmation that this was indeed a son of the pride. That explained the familiarity.. and, possibly, the attitude. He had thought about it but never settled on what he thought he would be like or do if he had grown up in a pride like this. He expected many took it as a challenge, and many others were content to leave.. but if you knew where your family was when you left them behind, would you be compelled to visit?

The answer was yes, in his own case.

He didn't relax exactly, that would have meant revealing his weak leg, but he accepted the idea that Laini was not here to cause any trouble.

"We're managing," he answered in regard to the drought, knowing the situation was becoming desperate but that the pride would persevere and that encouraging any worried relatives to intervene would be worse. He wasn't sure how to respond to the soft-spoken request, but he nodded.

"I will."

The large dark lion nodded at Kuhasa's reply. "Thank you." He returned, his deep voice unfailaingly polite and soft-spoken. Laini was not a violent lion, nor was he confrontational, despite his larger than average size and obvous strength. His Bonelander bloodline was clearly obvious and not only in his exceptional colouration.

Dipping his head in a small bow he moved a few paces, away from the pride that Kuhasa was guarding. "Then I shall be on my way. Good luck." With one last knowing look at the grey male, Laini set off once more into the roguelands. He knew he would be back here, he would need to be sure his family had survived this troubled time and maybe, just maybe, he would get to meet his great-grandkids one day... But for now, his work was done and he would not upset his Ithambo relatives by lingering.

Fin from Laini!

Kuhasa nodded in return but said nothing else as Laini turned and left. He held his position for some time, watching the other lion leave and thinking about what it must be like to grow up as a male in a pride like this. It wasn't exactly cruel to send them out and expect them to make their own lives, but it wasn't necessarily for everybody.

He would come back to keep an eye on the area but he was satisfied that Laini had gone on his way for now, so he eventually turned and made his way back home. He'd been ignoring the other males around the pride, that seemed to be the way things went.. maybe he'd start watching a little closer, just out of curiosity.

Fin!
