Ruihi was excited, that's the only word she could use to describe her reaction to the most current news. For years, she dedicated her time and energy to be a messenger and as a result was one of the few Menehune to interact with the Kaha'iko across the canal. It had left her as an outcast, someone who was surrounded by rumors of abandoning their ways to live the lavish life of the wayward Kaha'iko. Even without constant interaction between the two races, each one had their perceptions thanks to rumors that spread from the bordering settlements.
Pausing a moment within the waters at that thought, Ruihi let out a bark of a laugh. Most may not know the truth about the others, but they would soon enough. The most current news would be sure to raise interest, fears, and general excitement among everyone in Kahikina. Ruihi would be her next tattoo design on that.
As she felt the transition to the thicker waters of Elehun, Ruihi could already feel the buzz of the community. The leaders knew she was called on an important mission, and that she would bring back some news to share. As she made her way to the bordering settlement of Naele, one of the few places where she was welcomed still for her interactions with the Kaha'iko, Ruihi ran the announcement back through her mind. They would want her report immediately, so she needed to make sure she was clear.
It took only a moment for her to be swept into the home of the leader, and she relaxed enough to take a deep breath.
"I come with great news from the Kaha'iko. They request the presence of the great leaders of the Menehune, in half a year's time, to discuss the growing concerns over the shrinking waters." Ruihi spoke quickly, eyes wide as she looked across at the growing number of elders. All of the elders were seated around her, including the ever reclusive Kapa'a, who was silent. Everyone waited for his response; he was one of the most devout of Menehune and if he was uncomfortable with the arrangement the others would refuse as well.
Ruihi just sat in silence and anticipation, eager to be part of such a momentous event.
"It appears that we have no choice," Kapa'a spoke after another long moment, his words slow and drawn, "Our waters too have receded, and that is a clear threat to our life. If the Kaha'iko too see such trends, we can only assume that this is much more dangerous than expected. We must work together to find a solution to this problem, so we can protect our homes and our ways."
It wasn't a surprise, after all, as the Menehune were willing to work toward a common goal if it meant safety, security, and solving a problem. In no time at all, the elders parted to head to their own settlements, to spread the news to their people. Ruihi left immediately to head back to Pale'iko to let them know of the response. Undoubtedly, the Kaha'iko would spread word as well during their trip to Noelani.
As Kapa'a watched his allies and comrades leave, he was silent. This was something deep to consider. News would travel that the world was now open, that people were encouraged to begin their trip to Noelani, a place normally seen as an end-of-life journey once a Menehune passed on. To open up the borders would mean opening up the Menehune to the Kaha'iko ways.
It was a risk, but he saw the water turning to mud, and the mud turning to sand. Their world was shrinking, and protecting his family was more important than keeping his pride.

THE WORLD HAS OPENED
News is spreading across the land that the Menehune and Kaha'iko are to meet for a grand gathering in half a year. For now, many are encouraged to make the trip to Noelani if they desire, as it is an important gathering. Although many may not be permitted to enter the great event when it begins, everyone can now meet and greet each other via Roleplay. Just be mindful...if one does not live on the border settlement odds are they've never met or interacted with the other race. How will they deal with such different cultures? Now is the time to explore.
Want to earn some Growth Points right off the bat? Feel free to RP or write a solo reacting to the news! The only requirement is that you must respond to your character hearing about the news of the open travels and the gathering. You can do so with a friend, but please only roleplay immediate reactions, not them meeting the new race. Otherwise, it will not count!

Dinnertime was a noisy affair at Rewi's home. How could it not be, with eight people all shoved into their rather small dining quarters and everyone eager to tell their family of the day's adventures? It was an enjoyable part of the day. Easy in its familiarity. Simple in that the young Menehune didn't have to do anything except eat and listen. Today seemed especially exciting, though, at least for all the older children. Rewi didn't have much to say, himself, but he was always pleased when his siblings were in high spirits.
Apparently, Joena and Okenu had ventured into the village center today to deliver some of their wares to the shopkeeper that actually peddled the family's merchandise. The journey wasn't an especially short one, as it ate up most of the day, and it usually left anyone who made it feeling impatient and irate.
Usually. Though instead of grumbling about the length of the trip and the less-than-satisfying ratio of coin to effort for their troubles, the pair returned anxious and eager with news most of the family hadn't had the opportunity to learn yet, due to them living such a length from any of the main settlements.
When Joena announced their findings, that the Menehune and Kaha'iko leaders would be meeting in half a year's time, Rewi found himself blinking in open confusion.
Why?
Why would two such different groups bother to arrange a meeting, at all? The earth was as it was. Perhaps the days were warming and the waters were receding, but it seemed there was little to do about that whether the two races decided to come together or not. Everyone had always said there was nothing to worry about. The rains would begin again soon enough. They would be fine. And Rewi himself believed that. They would be fine.
It wasn't as if he minded the Kaha'iko. His family lived close enough to the border that the sight of them wasn't a complete rarity, and he hadn't been raised to discriminate against them, even if his parents didn't exactly believe in the more laid-back attitude of the river-dwelling race.
It was more that the leaders of their tribes felt threatened enough to do something out of the norm. All of them must believe that they couldn't do nothing and be alright, even if they didn't have a solution yet.
The state of the world was worse than originally anticipated. That was all Rewi took from the knowledge.
Most of the family wanted to be there where and when the meeting took place. They weren't important folk and would never be allowed to listen first-hand, but they would know as soon as everyone else did and be ready to act in whatever way they could. They wanted to be there, but it, unfortunately, wasn't possible. The farm still needed running. In the end, it was only Rewi's father that would make the journey. And since Rewi was of little use at the home front, he was permitted to travel at the old man's side, in case of emergency, so long as he did what was expected of him.
The prospect was interesting enough that Rewi couldn't refuse.
