Cera hummed a sweet little tune as she sat in the field of wildflowers, her soft pink blending in against the colorful backdrop of marigold yellow and lavenders. A few butterflies flitted from flower to flower and a handful had decided that her mane and hair were perfectly good resting spots. Cera could help a giggle that escaped when a few of them beat their soft wings against her cheek, enjoying their companionship.

The subtle scent of the wildflowers wafted over her as the breeze picked up and the valley grass swayed in time with each gust. A few of her new friends scattered by a few remained, their wings slowly opening and closer as they rested against her flank. It was a wonderful day, Cera thought with a smile. A truly wonderful day.

Horse nosed her way around the forest floor carefully, cautiously. While she had been in these strange lands for several weeks now, she was still unable to let her guard down. She had spent so many years in isolation, spending her time running and hiding from sharp claws and hungry teeth. Now in this strange, peaceful land, she couldn't help but stay on edge even with the kinder weather that remained hot under the sun but still broken up by cool breezes and plentiful shade. The nights were equally kind in her eyes, with the temperatures no longer dropping to frigid lows that left her legs aching and the rest of her shaking in the corner of her cave, dried grass piled around her in an attempt of comfort. Food was plentiful here, lush and sweet and green. It was...disconcerting for Horse to say the least.

She had almost gorged herself the first time she was faced with so much green, but her caution had won out in the end. Little bites here and there of different things, making sure none of which would make her sick. Only after she had eaten one thing and been safe would she dare nibble on something new. There was so much variety here though, that she feared she might never isolate everything. She had munched on a bright blue thistle a few days ago that had tasted sour and bitter but left her no ill effects, but onyl a week prior she had bit into a juicy black berry that had left her ill for the rest of the day.

Chloe carefully worked her way through the forest, her eyes downcast as she slowly felt her way through the rocks and bushes that littered the forest ground. Her short, curly mane dipped over her eyes, obscuring the intelligent light in the warm brown eyes. She was out scavenging, slowly getting ready for the coming harvest. It was still early in the year, but Chloe was nothing but careful and left very little to chance. She would rather start scouting out the best harvest and collecting bits and ends now than be late and risk a less-than-perfect harvest moon with her mistress.

Her body was relaxed as she carefully picked her way through the impromptu obstacle course, and she lamented her choice to walk down this path. With so many things in her way, it was hard to pay attention to wear to step and her surroundings at the same time. Even so, her eyes kept darting from the ground to up around her, sharp and aware. Her ears would twitch with every unusual sound, from the crunch of leaves in the distance to the sharp caw of a crow overhead. Most in this forest were peaceful.

Most.

The day was so calm. Cera nosed at a nearby wildflower, watching it bob to and fro in the breeze. The bright yellow petals seemed to glow in the sunlight and its dark center stared back at Cera, unblinking in its intensity. A few of its mates sprouted on branching green stems, most smaller and a rare few bigger. The species was a new one, Cera mused, so unlike the light daisies or marigolds that tended to crop up. It appeared heartier and its stems were a deeper green, thicker and covered in a light fuzz. They had a light scent, not overwhelming like lavender and even softer than roses which were her favorites. She had never seen them before but they covered this field and she had nestled herself carefully in the depth of them.

They were tall and several of the brushes reached above her head when she was laying like so. She loved them though, loved them as she loved all of the flowers, each of which she cherished as she felt they cherished her. The years had helped her find her voice, and she no longer stuttered in every conversation. But even so, she found it difficult to speak to strangers and she, still after all this time, preferred the silent company of her flowers.

Horse slowed her walk as she neared the edge of the forest, the sun shining through the small gap in the trees. Her neck had been bent low as she carefully grazed along the forest floor, nibbling cautiously at the soft underbrush and moss that covered the dirt. Occasionally, she'd steal a small bite of a fallen leaf, slowly chewing the often wilted and dried greenery with an odd relish. Anything was better than the dry, brittle grass that she had known her entire life.

She had been wandering with no known direction, no purpose, other than to be away. She had careful to avoid strangers, her paranoia still reigning over every one of her actions. She had gone out of her way to avoid well traveled paths and had managed to quietly slink away before she had to come face-to-face with any stranger. While it had been the familiarity of these strangers, who had hard hooves and rounded teeth like her instead of sharp claws and fangs, now that she had been confronted with potential company...she just couldn't.

Chloe was slowly making her way through the forest, the movement slow but steady but she took it without complaint. It was the fastest way to the valley she was seeking out; the easier path would hjave taken her a few hours out of the way and while slightly easier, she could handle slowly picking herself through the sharp rocks and pointy bramble.

A breeze picked up, blowing her short cropped and curly mane from her eyes for a moment and she took the opportunity to stop and get a good look at her surroundings. The trees were still dense and small branches reached out and scraped her flank as she moved but the trees were rapidly clearing. The distance between each was slowly widening and she could see the end of the forest ahead where the trees stopped abruptly and the outpouring of sunlight almost blinded her. She fluttered her wings, a careful, contrived movement as she heard the slight rustling of branches and leaves that accompanied the wind. Perhaps it was nothing but...
