Keiran loved his job. Not the least because it was actually sort of funding him finally being able to pay rent on his own place - he just really, really liked working at a cafe, and he liked how natural it felt to be baking and cooking, like he had done it his whole life.
Hell, for all he knew, maybe he had.
It was the best sort of opportunity for him, really, and recently he'd been left to man the counter alone more often, as he'd proved himself more than capable of doing so. Right then,t he owner was on a supply run, and Keiran was the only person on shift - so it was a good thing there was something of a lull, he supposed.
Still, the quiet was a little lonely.

Amaris, for all her personal and intentional inability, had never been particularly fond of her job -- she was alright at it, she supposed, but it was an internship for a field she didn't want to go into. Then again, she didn't want to go into any fields, but that wasn't an especially viable career choice for anyone with four functioning limbs and no actual disabilities whatsoever -- and it was over halfway through the school year.
Come winter break, she was going to get pounced on about her major again, and even thinking about that argument waiting to happen gave her a gigantic headache.
So she did the most reasonable thing possible and decided to buy herself something at least 80% sugar, tooth rotting, and maybe pumpkin? Probably pumpkin. It seemed suitable, and she was all about the aesthetic this time of year. (Every time of year. But mostly this one. Nothing clashed more with her hair than Valentine-vomit pink -- a lesson hard-learned.)
And the guy on shift for this bakery was cute, too, so that was always a plus. A huge plus. Almost as tasty as the food itself.
Amaris opened the door with a confidence she didn't entirely feel but determined herself to send out into the world, with a cheery smile aimed at Keiran. "Okay, so, like -- I know this is probably totally rude, but I have twenty bucks and I want to throw myself into a sugar coma for the next three days, what's your rec for my decks?"

Keiran could definitely add "meeting lots of cute people" to the general list of benefits of working at a bakery, and he was fully conscious of the knowledge that it was something like a dorky coffee shop AU, but, hell. He wasn't looking to settle down with the love of his life, just flirt with pretty girls and pretty boys that came in to buy pastries.
"Not rude at all," he said brightly. "What's your feeling on pumpkin spice, because we have so much pumpkin, all baked by yours truly." He gave her a playful little wink. "I'm personally fond of the pumpkin cookies with white chocolate chips, but the apple turnovers are also incredibly sugary and incredibly in the spirit of the season."
Might as well enjoy his day as much as possible, really.

"If a human being could live on nothing but pumpkin spice," Amaris said with exceeding seriousness, "I would have a new diet every Fall and I would be your official favorite customer for at least two months a year." She grinned, and her tone was teasing; but the barest essence of the sentence was true, depending on your point of view. Amaris had never half-assed anything in her life, when it came to embracing seasonal trends.
"See, like, I'm surprised you don't have pumpkin turnovers? But I'm not sure those are even a thing, so." She shrugged. "Four of the cookies n' four of the turnovers, please?"
