Rebecca had let herself get so caught up in her schoolwork that she might have missed the holiday entirely if it hadn't taken over the scenery quite so thoroughly. It was still a bit of a shock, though, to realize just how quickly the end of October had crept up on her. She wasn't prepared for Halloween at all, though when the month had started she'd been dead set on the idea that this time she would be. She was setting down roots here in the city, and she was looking forward to knowing exactly where she'd be when the time for celebrating came.
The thing was, she realized as she admired the many decorations that had gone up on the homes and businesses she passed on one of her trips into the city, just knowing that she could take part didn't quite help her know how to. Sure, she'd seen more than a few costume stores pop up, so that wasn't going to be a problem, but unfortunately it was the part that came after that that stumped her.
She was really already too old to be going house to house for candy the way she had back when she was a kid, back before all the traveling. She hadn't been invited to any parties, which was...well, it was to be expected. She hadn't been doing a great job connecting with her classmates, not just yet. She kept telling herself she would reach out, after this assignment or that chore, but there always seemed to be something more important when the time came. Times like this she wished she'd gone ahead and made more than acquaintances of them. What was she supposed to do with her time?
The teen hummed thoughtfully as she snapped a photo of an especially well carved pumpkin on her phone. She went through the motions of sending it to her mom, captioned it with a little smiley face, then flicked her phone off and turned on her heel to march decisively off towards her decided destination. It didn't matter if she had to spend the day more or less alone, she was going to make the most of it and get all the enjoyment she could out of it.
There was a stand selling pumpkins down the street she'd passed with that one house that had gotten pranked, the one that stood out so much as being bare of any holiday decorations. She'd buy a small one, carve it up, and keep it at the dorm a day or two at least. And that costume shop on the corner seemed like it might have a good selection that she'd be able to afford something with her allowance. Which really just left...Ah! She could buy candy most anywhere, this time of year.
She ticked things off the list one by one as she moved from business to business. Pumpkin. Carving kit. Simple costume. Bags of candy (to be shared with dorm-mates, but mostly kept for herself). And, finally, to top off the day, a huge book of ghost stories. Next year, she'd have someone to spend it with, she was deciding that here and now, too. But this year wasn't going to be bad by any means.
