It's a few hours before trick-or-treaters come knocking, and you've accidentally eaten all your candy for the kids! You knew you shouldn't have bought your candy a week early - and it was the good kind, too! All the stores are probably out...what are you going to do?
Samantha loved Reese’s peanut butter cups. Really, she had an affinity for most things peanut butter, especially if it was coated in chocolate. But Reese’s got it right. It did not matter what size or shape they made their treats, the ratio was always perfect. Different each iteration, delicious in their own ways, was a treat to savor. Her favorite of the moment were the pumpkin shaped Halloween treats, which was what she had bought to share with the kids that came trick or treating.
Or, well. That had been the intention.
Okay, it had not been. She bought the bag for herself, and running ‘out’ of it was just the way she justified shutting off the porch light and hiding inside her house so no one came trick or treating at her place. No one in her house was really big on the trick or treating part of the night anyway, and preferred to not be involved in getting up every few minutes to hand out candy to kids and people too old to be out anyway. That was what her mom said, anyway. For Samantha, it was a case of ‘more candy for me’, and he was fine with it.
Maybe that made her a little greedy… and she did feel guilty about it, in the long run. Why bother saying they were buying candy for the kids when they all knew it was for them? They were literally just lying to themselves: no one outside knew the back story that had been built around this whole event. It was just one more porch light that was unlit, and one more dark door that did not want to be disturbed. Everyone knew the rules of trick or treating: so why did she need an excuse to feel better about it?
She did not, really. But the Reese’s continued to be delicious, and really that was the only thing she wanted to think about. She did not get candy all that often, really, as she never had it around the house and did not think to go and get some very regularly. Halloween and Easter were her main chances to indulge in delicious treats, so wasting her time worrying about guilt was really just taking away from her ability to enjoy this once a year holiday event. Everyone out there enjoying Halloween would want her to have a good one, too, right? That was fair enough to think, and it brought her a little comfort. They could do it their way, and she would do it hers. She was sitting in her living room, the TV on but not on the news, with a book in her lap and the bag of chocolates beside her. Things were feeling perfect, and she loved it. For her, the night was perfect. Quiet. And very, very yummy.
There were only three of the pumpkins left, a travesty in itself, but she would survive. Only because she knew there was a bag of the fun size ones waiting for her, and those were probably her favorite right now.
Wait. What?
