While you're walking home, the wind suddenly seems to change direction. It gets colder. And if you look behind you, it looks like someone's following you. There, in the distance, a shadowy black figure. If you move towards him, he seems to disappear, but once you turn around again, you can feel him watching you. No matter how far you run, no matter how fast, he always seems to be there when you look over your shoulder. Once you reach your destination and are safely inside, suddenly you can't see him anymore, and after a few harrowing moments the air seems to lift. You're safe, but...what was that all about?
Odessa pulled her apartment door closed behind her, fumbling in her pocket for her keys. She'd unpacked a couple of critical items, but now it was time to grab a pumpkin, and maybe some Halloween candy. Clearly other residents in her building were all about decorating and the festive spirit, so she felt the need to join in. She smiled, thinking about the jack-o-lantern face that had been drawn on her moving box. Perhaps she'd carve her pumpkin to match it. She pushed the elevator button at least ten times before it arrived on her floor. Leaning on the side of the elevator, and hammering on the ground floor button, she contemplated what kind of candy to buy. ... Perhaps whatever was left at the grocery story on the corner of the block. It was pretty close to the date, after all. The elevator dinged open, and she walked through the lobby to the front street.
There was a brisk wind up, and the sun was just starting to go down. Odessa flipped up the collar of her coat, in a vain attempt to keep her ears warm. Thankfully the grocery story was only on the corner, not too far at all. Even from a distance, she spotted the bin of pumpkins. She could even see an extra creepy warty one right on top. She loved pumpkins like that!
Arriving at the store, she scooped up the pumpkin, grinning down at it. "It's perfect! Oooh, I can't wait to carve it!" Odessa pushed open the door to the shop with her hip, looking around as she entered. It wasn't a big shop, but it seemed to have the essentials. Walked down the aisle that seemed most likely to have candy, and wasn't disappointed. Checking her options, she settled on a box of mini chocolate bars, and a bag of lollipops. That should keep most kids happy...
She sauntered to the counter, depositing her loot. The clerk seemed sort of odd, and wouldn't make eye contact. Odessa mentally shrugged it off. Some city people just weren't all that friendly. She handed her cash over, and didn't bother counting the change she received back. If the weird cashier wanted to short her, whatever. She picked up the bag with her candy, and grabbed the pumpkin. "Thanks!" The cashier just nodded, and Odessa walked out the door. "I hope other people are more... normal."
The wind picked up, and Odessa tried to pull her collar back up, which was made harder with her candy bag and pumpkin. Very suddenly, the wind switched directions, blowing her wild hair into her face. "Ugh, stupid wind." If it had been chilly before, it was downright cold now. Odessa turned around, trying to get the wind to blow her hair out of her face. A strange dark figure stood on the corner of the far block. It sort of seemed like it was looking at her. Odessa shivered, and turned back around, starting to walk as fast as she could without jogging.
Having gone past a couple of buildings, she glanced over her shoulder. The strange figure was now standing on the corner, just across from the block she was currently on. She shivered again. "Seriously, I must be imaging all of this." Still, she didn't want this creep to know where she lived. The red head darted down an alley between the two buildings. She jogged towards the back of the buildings, trying to decide what direction to go. She glanced to her left, and had to stifle a gasp. Between the buildings, she could see the figure standing on the sidewalk.
Now deeply regretting her choice to go into the alley, she took off at a run, pumpkin clutched in her arms, bag of candy flapping from her arm. The sun had now well and truly set. She panted as she reached the next sidewalk. She glanced across the street, and felt her breath catch. The stranger was still there, across from her, watching. She glared at the shadowy figure, and started walking towards it. She was simply going to confront this creep and be done with it. She gasped again, and felt a sting as her ankle rolled on a rock. Struggling to keep her balance, especially laden down with a pumpkin, she stumbled over to a building wall, leaning against it for a minute. When Odessa next looked up, the figure was gone. She shivered. "Screw this. I'm going home."
Though her ankle was now throbbing, she started jogging towards her building. It was only about a block away, but she had to wind through the back alley again to get there... She could feel the hair on the back of her neck starting to stand up. She glanced over her shoulder, a deep feeling a dread had settled in the pit of her stomach. Of course the creep was behind her again. This was all getting far too uncanny for her tastes. Every building, she'd glance back, and sure enough, he was still there. Her throat was tight with fear by the time she reached the back door of her building. She fumbled into her pocked, balancing the pumpkin on one hip. She jammed her keys in the door, and wrenched it open, dashing inside, and then slamming it behind her. She panted, and waited for a knock, or for the creep to just ... appear. Her breath was ragged as she waited for the worst. But nothing seemed to happen.
Odessa sucked in a deep breath, and hit the up button on the elevator. What on earth had that been about? Was this city just full of creepy jerks? ... Did he know where she lived now? She chewed on her lip as the door dinged open to her floor.
