As a connoisseur of the scary, Rabia considered Halloween one of the best holidays of the year. She considered it something extremely amazing, especially because over where she'd lived in small-town Pakistan, they didn't exactly consider Halloween to be more than a day where things happen. Boo. So when she'd heard that in America, Halloween was pretty much a national holiday, she couldn't help but to get extremely ready. For example-- The moment the teachers asked for help in decorating the halls of Meadowview with Halloween decorations, Rabia was the first one with her hand up. She hadn't really understood why her classmates groaned and avoided the topic-- They'd offered such a privilege to all kids, right? It wasn't like it'd be something bad.
Later, her brother laughed at her.
Castro was definitely just being an a*****e, of course, but it wasn't like she could do something about it. (Except punch him, maybe. She'd have to note that for later.) So when she arrived to school on a Saturday to help out with the decorations, she felt a little bit... Awkward. She didn't know anyone there. Nor did she know what to do or what she could do in the first place. Maybe she could ask someone...?? She sorta walked around some, searching for some person friendly enough (or sucker enough) for Rabia to ask.

Lily was...well. She had never been particularly excited for Halloween -- something told her that this year, perhaps, things would be different; as Juliet, in her drapes and her black, she would fit into the costumed masses so very well -- but overall, still, she lacked any real excitement. She volunteered every year to decorate, though. It was nice, to help with something other people weren't interested in -- she didn't need the thanks. Just the rhythm and familiar pattern of the decorations going up on the walls, the faux-cobwebs in the trees, a fake tombstone in the grass. She could have known it by heart if her memory was better -- but it wasn't. Lily stepped down off a stool, her arm sore from straining for a banner that was just a little too high on one side, and smiled polite as anything at Rabia. "You're a volunteer, right? I'm sorry, but I haven't seen anyone else around yet."

Rabia was a little more than surprised when her gaze fell upon Lily's. She waved a little before responding, looking over at the decorations with slight interest. "Yeah, I love Halloween!" Rabia said eagerly, walking closer, eyes lighting up with excitement before remembering she hadn't met this girl yet. "Yeah, I'm totally a volunteer. III'm also new here, so--" Rabia thrust her right hand out, giving her a cheerful grin. "I'm Rabia! As-salamu alaykum!" It wasn't exactly what she was used to, but since she wasn't in Pakistan anymore, she didn't need to keep doing those stuffy greetings. Her father had always hated when she initiated contact with another. "So, what can I help out with? There doesn't look like there's much done!" Rabia blinked. "Er, no offense. Though you do look a little tired. What are we using first?"

"No offense taken," Lily smiled. "I'm one of the first people here every year -- it's no surprise. Most of the people with the materials won't be here for another half an hour; I like to get a head start." She motioned behind her, pointing out a box of plastic spiders. "If you're worried about where to put things, just place them wherever they look best -- nobody actually minds the details. I tend to start with the cobwebs and then add on, but I don't mind if you have any ideas."

Rabia nodded eagerly, listening to her as she mentioned she liked to get a head start-- "Ooh, spiders!" She exclaimed eagerly, eyes shining a little as she stepped toward the box with a bounce in her step and a grin on her face. "Mmm, that sounds like a good idea! What if we hung torn up toilet paper on the ceilings, maybe it'll look, uhh..." Rabia started, having grabbed a spider and begun to inspect it some before her eyes fell upon Lily's. "Sppoooooky. OoooooOOoooOOoh!" She'd added the last bit for fun, using her hands and mimicing some sort of a spooky motion. She stopped, then shrugged and giggled. "We could start with this though. Where are the cobwebs?"
After a pause, the teen stopped and suddenly grinned excitedly at the other teen. "Ya Allah! What are you dressing up for Halloween, uh...?" She was sort of fishing for her name, but wasn't trying to seem too obvious about it, she hoped.

"The spiders come in three different sizes -- the smaller box is glow in the dark," Lily instructed, with the tone of someone who only knew this through heavy repetition and not via any actual ability of their own, "and glow-in-the-dark decorations normally sit on the outside walls of the school, so that they can provide visibility after all the students have gone home." She had no apparent reaction to Rabia's excitement, simply continuing through her duties, walking as she talked. "Tombstones haven't arrived yet -- they should be here within the hour, and those go in the green. We use the same cobwebs for interior decorations and on the green, but interior they're larger. Does that make sense?" She seemed, quite honestly, completely oblivious to Rabia's attempts to get her name. "I don't have any interest in dressing up, actually. I prefer to be helpful - I don't like candy very much, so there's no need for me to go trick-or-treating. And no toilet paper. That's a rule that's been here for years, so we don't look like we got hazed, I believe."

Rabia followed along next to her, looking at the boxes and the items as they're mentioned. "Yeah, I get you. But glow in the dark ones would look really cool inside too, don't you think?" She asked a little confused-- "The school would look totally rad! It'd be all lighty-upy and stuff. Don't you think?" Rabia asked, almost picturing the school all pretty and decorated as they walk the halls. The minute she spoke about-- How she didn't care to dress up, or how she had no need to trick or treat, or even worse, her not liking candy-- Rabia could feel her soul slowly shrivel up and die. But out of all those things, Rabia chose to blow up at the second to last one. "HOW could you not like candy?!" Rabia gasped-- "A-and, can't there be an exception this year? It'd be really cool, with the toilet paper! Or just-- I. How could you not want to dress up!? That's like. Halloween. Helping out has nothing to do with anything!" Rabia totally felt an argument coming on, but she held back, wanting to hear her response to the first questions. Surely there was a reason to... everything!

"I've lived in Destiny City my entire life," Lily patiently explained, her expression unchanging. "It's rather dangerous outside, with costumed vigilantes, so I prefer to stay in and keep safe." She hoisted a plastic box of stickers over her shoulder, looking closely at the label for a few seconds before it became clear it was just more bats. Ugh. Bats. Honestly, maybe she wouldn't put up bats this year. It seemed a little tasteless. She'd have to ask. "I don't have a sweet tooth, and I generally don't enjoy celebrations in the first place. I'm happy to help out with product creation, but when it comes to the actual excitement --" she shook her head - "it's simply not my thing. I appreciate people can enjoy it, but I have no feelings on it."

Costumed... Vigilantes? "My brother mentioned something about those people, but I've never seen'em. He's not telling me anything about them, though...! Hey!" Rabia grinned at the other-- "Could'ya tell me more about them? I've been super curious about it...!" Or maybe she'd just go out and search for them, or something. This girl didn't seem like she'd give her much to go off of. She didn't seem like she had much emotion on anything in the first place! Rabia gaped at the other, totally shocked and at a loss for words. It just did not compute. "What is your thing then, if not Halloween or celebrating? Is your birthday counted in the not enjoying celebrations?!" She totally didn't get it yet. "I mean, wow, it's amazing but, are you sure you just haven't tried hard enough?" Rabia seemed eager to help, even if it was a lost cause.

"There's youths in sailor suits, and youths to adults in military-esque uniforms," she demurred. "I've only met a few, personally, but they generally seem nonviolent -- but this is a very large city, and as far as I can tell, their organizations are equally large. If you know of coming-of-age magical stories, they're dressed a little like that." Lily placed the bats down upon a table with an involuntary huff. "It's believed they're the reason for the unusually high homeless death rate in this city." Her voice held a tinge of concern, but -- she had never personally seen a dead person. She had no reason to worry. "And as far as I go...I don't really celebrate my birthday, actually. Gifts are nice, but I don't need much, and I'd much rather spend time helping other people when my life is perfectly safe."

Rabia was puzzled. "Sailor suits and military-esque uniforms..." Rabia couldn't help but feel a little more than slightly curious. She filed all the information for future exploits, wanting to search for one and give them a good interrogation or whatever. Rabia's hands slid into the box of bats, taking a few for decoration. "So they're not harming each other, but the homeless? That sounds really shitty." She kinda felt bad for those getting harmed, but it wasn't like she was getting affected, so it didn't hit her as hard as it could've.
Hearing she didn't celebrate her birthday only made Rabia even more bewildered. She didn't want to seem like an a** for freaking out about that though, so she merely looked at the spiders in silence. "I'm sorry, but that totally sucks! You don't even go out to the bowling alley or even to watch a movie? It's really cool that you help people, but you've gotta at least do some stuff for yourself, at least. Treat your self!" She winked, twirling the bat in her hand before grinning and deciding to pin it to her shirt collar. "Ready for decorating! What's your name, so I can call you something other than Miss. I-don't-like-celebrating?" She teased, smiling jovially.

"I'd presume they attack each other," Lily said offhandedly, "but when they do that, they're not harming civilians, are they? So it's really no problem, then. As I said, all my encounters with them have been nonviolent if unhelpful, so I don't know much. They're all very secretive gangs, if that's what they are." Lily didn't wink back; in fact, she wasn't even looking at Rabia. "My name is Lily, since you asked."

Well she hadn't mentioned that, so Rabia had just assumed, okay, but she figured her reactions weren't as entertaining as she thought they'd be. "Huh. I just guess they shouldn't be attacking anyone at all. In my opinion, at least." Rabia tapped her chin with a bat, listening to Lily but feeling a little annoyed at her ignoring her so much. "Secretive gangs, huh..." She trailed off, lost in thought until she heard the name she'd tried so hard to get. "Lily! Lily, Lily, Lily, alright then Lily! Let's get started!"
She actually felt less motivated to start now than she had before.
