So there was news that a mystic had been born. Kanika had only heard the news but had yet to see her. Which was understandable considering this was the first to be born, she would be paving the way for the rest of the Elaria at this point. They would no longer have a Alkdike mystic to guide them. It was strange to think about, it meant that the Elaria had stepped further away from their cousins. At some point, perhaps in her own life time, Kanika would see their camp filled with only the Elaria and no one else. It was something exciting to think about.
Now older, Kanika got up almost at the same time as her mothers. Zandala was already up and about when she was ready to go out. Her mothers still taught her, still trained her but now that she was older she had a lot more freedom to herself. She liked training a little later compared to her mothers, but she did spend the early morning stretching and heating up her body in preparation. Kanika didn't find much else to do during these years, she was still too young to travel to the mainland which left her with only training as a pass time.
Kanika picked up her bag and headed out towards the beach, a nice little swim in the morning would do her well. The jog there was short, their tent wasn't deep within the Elaria camp. The sun was up in the sky by the time her feet touched the sand, Kanika dug her toes in and breathed the salty air in deep. She dropped her bag on the ground and began her first stretch of the day before getting in the water.

"Keep up, Nivalis. Your sisters are long ahead of you." Niva's brows pinched, teeth digging into her lower lip, and a muted sound of frustration rumbling from her throat as she tried to push herself to keep up with the two older Elaria girls that accompanied her and Cyenna during the morning's activities. She wanted to say that it wasn't possible. Her sisters had longer legs for lengthier strides, they were older and had been doing this longer. Of course they were faster runners. And swimmers and better at everything else.
Cyenna, unfortunately, had little patience for such excuses. She was one of the older Alkidikes in the tribe. Short herself, and well-trusted among her peers. At least enough so that she was permitted to take on the training of whichever Elaria girls she could handle, Niva among them.
She'd hoped that her older sisters might wait for her in some display of solidarity, on this their first day together. But no, not a chance. They'd darted ahead through the trees in the manner expected of them while Cyenna lingered close at Niva's side, commanding the young mystic to pick up her feet and go, go, go. The Alkidike woman was rapidly becoming one of Niva's least favorite cousins.
She didn't catch up with the others, nor did she expect to, and she only knew where she was going by virtue of her guardian's commands. Away from camp, certainly, at as fast a pace as her small, thin legs would allow, over branches and through brambles, with her cousin's sharp, ringing voice snapping in her ear: go, go, go.
Every muscle in Niva's body burned by the time she made it to the treeline. She breathed heavily, felt like she was weighted down by a thousand boulders, and was reduced to little more than a stagger.
Still, go, go, go. Out of the trees, over the sand, toward the water where she could just barely make out her sisters' red heads bobbing against the surf, much farther than Niva thought she could make it.
It wasn't like she'd ever swam before. But nor was she allowed to stop. She didn't know what would happen if she did, but since Niva already detested Cyenna's methods, she wasn't eager to find out. She made it perhaps knee-deep into the water before her own momentum, already off-kilter step and the press and tug of the water dragged her down with a noisy splash.
And that... was just fine. It was fine for Nivalis to just sit and be shoved around by the tempestuous pull of the waves.

As Kanika sat stretching, she spotted some of her sisters run full on into the water. Kanika observed them, but did not say a word. If they were so careless as to simply run into the water and not make sure it was safe well that was on them. Her mother had taught them better than that. She did briefly wonder what was the hurry, but she soon figured that perhaps they had been in a competition against each other. Kanika shook her head and turned her gaze away from them. They were sisters; they shouldn’t be in competition against each other.
Granted, she’d been raised with Zayanna and her mothers had always been a little different in their teachings.
Standing up, Kanika twisted from side to side at the waist, hands up at chest level as she rotated her body back and forth. That’s when she spotted a cousin and a younger Elaria entering the beach. Kanika paid them little to no mind at first; this was nothing out of the usual after all. Maybe of the Alkidikes were starting to ask Elzira for their own children, there would be plenty of young Elaria running about soon. Though when the Alkidike went into the water and the Elaria just sat down in the water, Kanika narrowed her eyes.
She’d come to know a few of the cousins were harsh on the Elaria in their charge. Zayanna and she had been fortunate enough with their mothers, but she knew Akeldama had been bitter about her mother. Mothers had to be harsh to train their young daughter, but there were always limits. Kanika hadn’t liked witnessing it young and now older she liked it even less. It perhaps wasn’t her place to intervene but she was going to do it anyways. Picking up her bag, she quickly made her way over in a few strides and then dropped the bag on the sand where the water couldn’t reach it.
As she drew closer however, she noticed the girls pattering. It was not pink as a regular Elaria, but a greyish pink. That was odd, was the girl sick? Frowning, Kanika went up to her and plucked the girl right out of the water by grabbing her under the arms and lifting her up. She was a light little thing, Kanika easily moved her away from the water and back on the dry beach sand. Once put down she leaned down and moved a few of her hair strands out of her face.
“Are you okay? You almost drowned there.” Kanika shook her head. “You need to be more careful.”

Never once had Niva been granted the opportunity to swim before. She understood the reasoning. She was small and as grey as the waters. The beach tides could be intense, and if she was sucked under before she knew how to manage herself, she might never resurface. But here the water was shallow enough that she could stand, if she really wanted to. Or had the strength left in her legs to combat the current. Unfortunately, such was not the case, but in the first few seconds of being submerged, the danger didn't seem real.
All she knew was the water felt so cool against her muscles. The rhythmic sway of the current seemed so gentle when beneath it, and the sand was soft against her toes and fingertips. The beach was nice. The water was nice. And this was fine.
Unfortunately, the need for air came all too soon. She'd been panting already when she flopped into the water, and it was hardly a handful of seconds before she needed to struggle back to the surface, spitting, gasping, and flailing as she tried to coerce her body into cooperation. It didn't.
Instead, she was lifted free of the water with a quiet yip of surprise. Nivalis expected it to be her cousin, ready to scold her. She tossed a disgruntled glower in the woman's direction, only to see- "Oh!" She sucked in a much needed gulp of air and squirmed to latch her fingers around the other girl's arms. "You're, um..." A spluttered hack kept her from finishing, and she tucked her head. She knew all of her sisters' names. She thought it important that she learn them, even if they'd never met face to face. "Kanika!" She proclaimed once the fit had passed, smiling broadly at her sister as she was carried from the water and placed upon the sand.
Oh, what a welcome sight! She might have been left out here to struggle with Cyenna on her own, and that was hardly bearable... "Yes," Nivalis nodded firmly. "I'm okay now. I am supposed to be training, so there isn't much time for breaks, but I can't keep up with the others... I'm too small."
"You." Niva grimaced and tucked closer to her sister's side at the sound of her trainer's voice. Cyenna stormed from the shallows toward them, and she did not look pleased in the slightest. "What do you think you're doing?" She demanded of Kanika. "You're interrupting the morning's lessons."

Fluffesu Aseara is finally legendary so my tags should be a lot more prompt! Kanika’s head tilted curiously as the girl said her name, she was quite sure she’d never met this particular sister before. At least, she didn’t remember ever seeing her around? She would have remembered such a meeting after all; those markings were hard to miss up close and personal like they were now. Kanika pursed her lips, quite curious indeed.
“Keep training, being small isn’t an excuse,” Kanika said softly before patting her on the head. Lumikani was small after all and she kept up with all the other sisters’ quite well. Kanika had been small at some point too, but with proper training from her mothers they’d been able to grow quite strong as they’d gotten older. “What’s your name by the way?”
When Kanika heard an angry voice, she turned her head to see an Alkidike moving towards them. Kanika, straightened her spine out to her full height, features tightening into what looked to be a frown even though she was trying to stay as neutral as possible. Her mothers had taught her respect, but she was finding it harder and harder to respect some of the Akidikes lately. OR at least the older she got the harder she felt it was. She didn’t like how her sister had been left to drown for some sort of lesson that could have taken her life.
“Your lesson almost killed her,” Kanika tried to keep her voice in check. Her hand went out to protect the younger Elaria and gently push her behind her. “That is not a proper lesson.” She said sternly, eyes narrowing at the Alkidike woman. Keep calm, she reminded herself, she was sure she was going to be hearing about this later on from an Elder and her mothers but she truly felt this was not the way to teach someone how to swim. Her own mothers hadn’t even taught them in the sea but in a small hide away.
“Maybe I should teach her how to swim because from over here it looked like you were about to kill her,” Kanika stared the woman down. “Maybe it should be reported to an elder.” Kanika dared her to say something; she was clearly threatening her and didn’t care. You didn’t treat one of her sisters this way without consequences and you certainly didn’t do it while Kanika was around. She had a strong sense of loyalty and it was to her sisters, not her cousins. She had no qualms executing her threat.

Nivalis frowned, and her gaze darted downward. She wasn't trying to make excuses, and she had no intention of ever giving less than one hundred percent to her training, but she also wasn't about to believe that she had any hope of keeping up with girls who were years ahead of her already, when she herself had just started. She would get better, work hard, and grow eventually, but for now, she was small, with much to learn.
At least her sister didn't seem angry. Not at her, anyway. Niva swallowed and peered up to Kanika. "I am-"
"Nivalis. Come here," Cyenna commanded briskly. Her gaze was firm on the older Elaria and showed no signs of wavering. "Being coddled by your older sisters will do you no favors. Return to the water." NIva hesitated, toes scuffling lightly against the sand, and the Alkidike woman's expression took a turn for the severely dissatisfied.
"The young mystic was far from death," Cyenna informed Kanika. "Your interference did not change that. While I am nearby and watching, she is in less danger than if you were to take my place, girl. If she couldn't resurface on her own, before your 'assistance,' I would have stepped in. Children learn from struggle. She will grow stronger under unfavorable conditions." Her dark gaze scraped over the youngest Elaria. NIva's lips puckered.
"The Matron herself has granted me the task of training this little one. Report my methods to whomever you like," she retorted dismissively. "Nivalis." She extended an arm and beckoned for the youngling to join her. "We have much to do today, yet. Don't dally."
Niva's uncertain and unconvinced hum of sound was much too soft for her Alkidike cousin to hear. She didn't expect to die on this day (or hoped not to), regardless of who oversaw the morning's efforts. But it seemed like Cyenna expected so much from her. Niva knew very little about Kanika, but the other girl was her sister and sticking up for her already. Surely she would be a good training partner. Her fingers slipped up to curl against Kanika's palm. "Will you stay with me?" She asked softly.

Nivalis? No the name did not ring a bell.
Kanika breathed in deeply, trying to control the words that threatened to spill out. She did not want to fight with her cousin, but the woman was starting to make it harder not to. Who was she to command the little Elaria? It was the first time Kanika felt that Elzira had not chosen a proper Alkidike to have a child. Kanika was not coddling her; she was ensuring that the Elaria lived. Ticked, Kanika’s hands clenched and unclenched as she bit down on her tongue. She had to stay polite…
When the woman uttered the word Mystic, Kanika’s expression completely changed from anger to bewilderment, shock, and surprise all at once. Had she just said… Had she just said Mystic?! Kanika turned her head to glance down at the little Elaria, it would certainly explain those markings. She had never expected to meet the mystic like this! Kanika didn’t know what to do; she knew she certainly didn’t want to leave this swimming lesson to this woman that was for sure! But that meant this woman was also the one who was taken care of her… Still, it did not feel right to Kanika and she’d been taught to do what was right.
“Then the matron is mistaken,” Kanika said slowly glancing back at the woman and narrowing her eyes. “I am going to be certain to be reporting this.” Now anger showed in her voice. “I believe she is in more danger by staying by your side. My mothers taught me how to swim and you can be sure that I would be extremely more capable then you would be.” Kanika paused her words; did she say what was really on her mind? She would be punished for it, but well… Kanika made a small prayer to Elzira.
“There are older Elaria then I,” she began this time completely pushing Nivalis behind her. “Perhaps it is time the Elaria began having a hand in raising our mystic.” She wasn’t opposed to the Alkidikes teaching her important things, she needed to learn from the matron after all and Kanika did not deny this. However, such things like this Kanika felt she would be far better at teaching her. It also created stronger bonds within the Elaria if they helped her teachings. The Alkdikes wouldn’t be around forever after all, the Elaria needed to start working things out themselves.
Niva’s little sounds did not go on deaf ears; it fueled Kanika’s momentary rebellion against the Alkidike. “See, even she wishes for me to stay,” Kanika gently grabbed on to the little hand and squeezed it to reassure her. “I do not take orders from you,” she said in a low voice. “But from her.” The mystic was after all, the voice of Elzira and whether this Alkidike liked it or not she would stay. “You can go report it to whoever you like.” Kanika said with finality and raised her chin in defiance.

Maybe this... wasn't turning out exactly as she'd hoped. On the one hand, this discussion had given Niva plenty of time to rest from the rough workout, and it was never a bad time to run into one of her sisters. Especially one she'd never had much direct interaction with before. On the other, if Kanika were to get in trouble, it would certainly be Nivalis' fault, since the older Elaria wouldn't have come to her rescue if Niva hd just tried a little harder. And if she were to go off age, prestige, and the general rank in the tribe between the two women, Kanika was much more likely to get in trouble than Cyenna...
She squeezed her older sister's hand in return, hoping to give as much reassurance as she got. Kanika hadn't known who Niva was, either, and already chose to stick up for her. The most noble of her sisters, surely. And one to watch. Nivalis glanced up to the older girl, then quickly back to her trainer.
Cyenna's expression had slightly softened from one of severe annoyance to only mild irritation. She would never regret pushing young warriors to be all they could be. Her regimen was tough, but neither was she about to let their young mystic perish in the waters. If that was the extent of the older Elaria's argument, Cyenna would've dismissed her immediately. She still had a mind to, but she also had a grudging respect for a young girl trying to protect one of her own. A good trait in an Elaria.
Her tone was level when she spoke, as firm and unyielding as ever. "If it pleases you, you may join us in the day's lessons. But you, hardly more than a child yourself, have no business overseeing the training of anyone on your own. You'd do well to remember that until Nivalis is of a proper age, you will take orders from the Matron, as we all do, and as I am doing now." She crossed her arms and notched her chin toward the water. "Go now."
This, Nivalis decided she could be agreeable to.
Still clutching Kanika's hand, she tugged the older girl toward the water. There was no telling what would be said and by whom when they returned from training, but for now, it was probably in everyone's best interest not to incite each other. "Thank you, sister," Niva beamed. "For coming to get me. I haven't swam before. The ocean doesn't seem to care about that, though."

Kanika would stand her ground any time for one of her sisters, much more so for Zayanna and the mystic. Still, once the older Alkidike had finished her speech, Kanika felt the tension in her shoulders release just a touch. Of course she would be joining them, even if the woman had not offered it so she wouldn’t have strayed very far from Nivalis. If anything, she would have stayed as close as possible just without reach in case something happened. She wouldn’t interfere but she would be close enough to act quickly if she felt Nivalis was in danger.
“I’ll be joining,” Kanika added even as she felt the mystic tugging at her. She would not be bullied away by the woman. That was for certain.
Finally after a few more seconds of staring at the older Alkidike, Kanika finally relented and followed the smaller Elaria. She glanced back once to see where exactly the Alkidike was going to settle before turning her attention fully to Niva. She was going to teach her the proper way, not this weird throw her in the water and let her sink or swim method. Her mothers had not taught her this way and she felt hers was better. Or at least, would be easier for a much smaller Elaria to learn.
Kanika also felt the ocean wasn’t exactly the best place to practice either, but it’s not like she could take Niva to their families spot either.
“No need to thank me,” Kanika said softly, dipping a foot into the cool waters. “The Banished are fickle creatures at times, and I don’t think this is the proper way to teach.” The waters were calm today, as calm as the ocean could get out here at least. “Alright, follow me in and when you’ve got water up to your waist, you’ll give me your arms and I’ll hold you while you practice kicking. I’ll pull you deeper but don’t worry I won’t let go until you’re good to go.”
“Ready?” Kanika smiled, released Niva’s hand and went into the water.

Of course she wanted to join them. Cyenna hadn't expected anything different, and likely would've been disappointed in the older Elaria girl if it had been. The Alkikde woman nodded her consent quietly, though she still retained a hint of dissatisfaction in her gaze, before she stepped to the water's edge to keep an eye on her pupils. There were other girls besides Nivalis and Kanika deeper out in the murky waters, after all, and each of their well-beings were as important as the next.
Nivalis decided she didn't much care what her Alkidike mentor thought. The situation had already improved dramatically from when she'd first flopped into the water, and overall, this seemed to be a positive experience.
Humming in quiet contentment, she stepped back into the water. It was as crisp as it was before, though without the benefit of burning up from a run. Still, much better than her first experience. The waves were lightly lapping at her calves, calming and beckoning, and the water was a patient (and slightly mysterious) shade of grey. There were probably a great many things lurking about in the deeper areas, but she'd be safe, so long as Kanika stayed by her side.
"They're certainly very moody," Nivalis agreed with a quiet sort. "I can hardly blame he other Alkidike for kicking them off their island. The others must be so much nicer. Or maybe much, much meaner." She plodded in up to her waist, scooping up handfuls of water as she went and letting it trickle from her fingers.
"I'm ready," she decided once she was deep enough to where Kanika had instructed. She held her arms out to her older sister and smiled as she did. "And don't worry. I'm not afraid."

Kanika chuckled as Niavlis spoke about the other Alkidikes back on Chibale. Lumikani spoke of them often and there did seem to be a distinction between both of them. Still, being Banished couldn’t be pleasant and she could not blame them for their sour mood. As long as they kept it in check of course, because some day the Elaria would out number them all and then they would just no longer be any Alkidikes on the island. Just Elaria. Kanika didn’t know if she would see the day but she was looking forward to the Elaria taking over the leadership roles.
“Good, never be afraid.” Kanika gave a small nodded before grabbing Niva’s tiny hands into her own and then letting her float on her own. She would let her practice with her legs before letting go when she was ready.
Kanika glanced at the other girls who were further and she narrowed her eyes at them. How could they just let Nivalis be treated like this? Unacceptable, they had to know that she was the mystic since they’d come with her. Some Elaria, Kanika rolled her eyes and looked back to make sure Nivalis was doing okay. They had to stick together; they had to protect their mystic. One day she was going to be taking the place of that old Alkidike who was the Banished mystic. She was going to be their leader. Ah well, not everyone had been raised like Zayanna and her she couldn’t hold everyone to such a high standard.
“When you’re ready, I will let go and you will use your arms okay?”

Nivalis let her fingers curl around the other girl's. Her feet lifted from the murky ocean-bottom sand, and she was floating in the water, coaxed along by Kanika's gentle tugging and the ever-present ripple of the waves. This... wasn't so bad, Niva decided as her arms stretched straight, and her legs followed suit. The water was murky, but cool. The waves weren't violent and torturous. And her sister was here. Kanika would not let any ills befall her.
Niva beamed and glanced up to the older girl's face as she did. She expected her sister to be smiling encouragingly back at her, but instead, Kanika's gaze was focused on the other Elaria girls, the ones who were swimming much farther away than Niva dared to go. She should be brave enough to follow them, and she was brave, but not foolish. Or, not so foolish that she thought she was ready to go out there, since this was her first ocean experience and all. Nivalis frowned and gave a sharp kick with her feet to propel her closer to Kanika.
Her older sister looked miffed at the other girls' antics, and Niva wasn't about to let her sisters be irritated at each other because of her.
"I would've slowed them down," she told Kanika as she paddled forward. "And been a burden on their training. I had a teacher and protector in Cyenna, so they didn't need to stop for me." She paddled nearer, near enough that she could pluck her arms free of Kanika's hold, loop them about her waist, and lean her head against her sister's stomach. "Don't be mad at them. I'm sure they trained just like I was supposed to, but they didn't have someone like you to step in and help them."
"Probably, anyway," she shrugged and released the older Elaria, and promptly positioned herself upright with her feet to the sand once more. But she stuck low, so that most of her whole body was submerged. "Can you go very deep?" She waddled a bit farther. "I probably can't."

“It is they who should slow down for you,” Kanika murmured quietly in contemplation at what the youngling was saying. Yes, Nivalis was right she would have slowed them down but it was their duty. Kanika chopped it up to her teachings from her mothers, she knew they’d been raised a lot more hands on them some of the other Elaria by her mothers. But was that such a bad thing? She didn’t think so, she felt better for it. They couldn’t all be raised the same way though, she better rid herself of the anger now or forever hold the grudge against her sisters.
“Well let me tell you,” Kanika stated before huffing. “Let’s just say my thoughts on Cyenna aren’t really very good.” The Elaria cast a dark look in the Alkidikes direction before softening up again. No use fighting among themselves right? Nivalis was right that they hadn’t been raised the same but kept the thought to herself. She had heard some whispers about Lumikani that she was finding were harder and harder to ignore. She didn’t know what exactly was going on, but the whispers were never good and she didn’t want to think that something might happen to her mother.
“We sure can if you’d like to.” Kanika motioned for Niva to follow with her head as she wadded out further into the water. She made sure to glance at Niva to make sure she was okay as they made it deeper and deeper. Soon her own feet weren’t touching the bottom anymore and she swam slowly next to the younger Elaria. “This is nice,” She finally said as she flipped onto her back and floated on her back. “My sister and I used to do this all the time.” Kanika chuckled softly.

She did not want her sisters to slow down for her. She did not want to be the one holding them up or keeping them waiting. It might be their duty to protect her in times of struggle, but it was also her duty to guide them and see to it that her tribe flourished, or it would be one day. And keeping the older Elaria girls from training with all of their might seemed a poor start to that. Nivalis did not begrudge her elder sisters their experience in this regard, and even if she would've appreciated one of them lingering behind to stay at her side, this was better for all of them. Though she did consider Kanika's presence a great blessing and very fortunate for her.
Until her sister started moving into deeper waters. Niva blinked at the other girl's statement. "Oh, I'm not sure if I should just yet, I was only wondering..." But with her toes still currently safely in the sand and Kanika still at her side, deeper didn't seem too threatening. The other Elaria were well out in the surf, swimming against the waves. So rather than put up more of a fight or show more hesitance, Niva followed her older sister.
Kanika was taller than her by at least two feet, and Nivalis had no hope of staying grounded as her sister steadily swam away from shore. But she was determined not to say as much, so even though the gentle waves could wash completely over her head, she paddled clumsily after the other Elaria. By the time she was at Kanika's side again, Niva was craning her head back desperately to keep it above water, and she floundered to latch onto her sister's leg as soon as Kanika was within reaching distance.
Using the older girl as a balance, she heaved her head father above the waves and sucked in a breath. "That must have been wonderful," she said after a moment. "Having a sister so close in age to you, to push you to be better, be a rival and a best friend... No one was born so close in age to me, and even if there was, we wouldn't have lived together..."

“Don’t worry I’ll keep you safe.” Kanika said seeing how Niva seemed a bit nervous at the idea of going into deeper waters. She was happy to see though that soon enough Niva was following her into deeper waters. The younger Elaria was light in the water and it was easy to stay afloat even with Niva was using her leg to float around. She would grow to be strong and if they went out swimming everyday Kanika was sure she’d be able to swim on her own in no time. Practice made perfect and she was going to make sure Niva got plenty of it as long as she was around.
“It is nice; she is like… my second half.” Kanika didn’t really know how else to explain it. Zayanna was her everything. “Well, you’ll never be alone that’s for sure. Someday my sister and I will have to go our separate ways…” Kanika didn’t know where life would take her, but she didn’t want to stay on Yael for the rest of her life. There was so much to see out there, so much to discover. She would always return to Yael of course, it was her home and she didn’t plan on living anywhere else. But she did want to see what was beyond their borders.
Kanika turned her head to look at Nivalis and smiled. “Living with a sister isn’t all that great anyways,” Kanika chuckled. “You always have to clean up after them. One day you will find a partner and will live with them, you’ll see it’s not all that glamourous.” Kanika was teasing of her of course.
“I wonder if your guardian is watching us and thinking, look at those two slacking off.” Kanika rolled her eyes and tried to look back but the water always covered her eyes before she could see the Alkidke. “Did you want to go see our other sisters or are you okay here? We can always go back to where it’s not as deep so you can practice some more if you want to.” Kanika was more inclined to help Nivalis practice some more in case she went out swimming without her; she wanted to make sure she would be okay if she was thrown in.
