Night had fallen slowly as though the sky was trying to ease them to sleep. But Witness could not sleep, not now, on this night. It was the Night of the Star, as her mother had called it. Every so often, a celestial event would occur bringing out the Wishing Star. It was said that if you were pure of heart that the star might just grant your wish.
And Witness had something she was wishing for desperately. She wanted another sibling. She and her brother had talked about it a long time in muted whispers before they had finally asked their mother. Aella had seemed hesitant at first, Witness couldn’t understand that.

Epitaph blinked slowly up at his mama. “You and mom always wanted more kids. And you were supposed to have four,” he hesitated. He knew that when their other mother Chanterelle has left that two baskets had gone with her on her journey. Their mother Aella had explained to them with tear filled eyes that they were gone, the fire had likely taken them. It had taken everything in it’s path.
“There can still be three mama,” he said. “We wanted to wish it for you. To get back what you lost, what we lost.” Epitaph felt as though somehow his words were failing to convey what he meant. “Mama, we know…it’s not the same. But…” He stopped not sure how to go on.

Aella’s heart was full to bursting. She has always dreamed of a large family with Chanterelle. But it was not to be. Here their children stood before them with their heart’s on their face asking for one last sibling, but not just for them…but another child for her because of all that she had lost.
“It won’t replace them,” she spoke softly. “My sweet darlings,” she pulled them both close to her and wrapped her neck over them. Epitaph was getting taller and it was getting harder to do. “A wish is just that a wish. And though I know your intentions are pure, we cannot be guaranteed that a sibling would be granted. But it’s not because either of you lack something, it’s not because you do not will it or want it enough. I want you to understand that. This sibling won’t be a replacement, it won’t heal the hurt of the two baskets that we lost. It will bring us joy, perhaps a little bittersweet. Do you understand?”

Witness spoke very slowly, considering her words carefully. “We know it won’t change the fact that there should be four of us already. But maybe if there was five of us, maybe we’d feel a little more whole mama?”
Whole. The word seemed something not quite attainable. A dream, a wish that was just out of reach. Those unnamed siblings were intangible to her. Something that she had almost had, but not quite. But this foal, this wish. It would be real. It would be a sibling that she could love and actually know.
"We know mama, it won't make up for who we lost. How we never knew them," her eyes burned with tears. "But maybe, it'll ease the pain?" Maybe it'll put a bandage over the hole in her heart. Hole. Whole, so different of meanings and so eerily the same.

Witness had said it better than he could have, better than he would have thought possible. Missing his unnamed siblings was a kind of weird hollow sense of lacking. On the one hand, he knew they were real and he missed them. On the other hand, he'd never met them. He'd never known them at all. How could you miss something that you didn't know? But he did, he always had.
"Yes, mama, it won't change that they're gone. But maybe, maybe..." He searched for the words to convey his meaning. "Maybe it'll make us a little less broken than we are now?" Though he didn't mean broken entirely. He didn't know exactly what he meant to say, only that maybe a little sister or brother would bring some more joy into their lives. That maybe it would give them..."Peace. Mamma, maybe it would bring peace. And we know what to name it. Thierry."

Thierry. The sound of the name was music to her soul. They understood what they were asking, she had to be sure one more time before they wished upon the star. Nothing could ever replace the two children she'd lost, but they were right. Maybe perhaps with one final wish, they could find some semblance of peace. Maybe become as close to whole as possible.
So that's what had brought them here on this starry hill to make a wish upon a star, for one last small soul to be entrusted into her care. To raise another child with joy and love, and to move on from the past. She had to get past it. She needed to more than anything. Because the past wasn't going to come back, it was past.
Aella took a deep breath.
