Dria nervously sat at the table, next to Drew. Fiona her mother lay bowls of delicious-looking food on the table as, Thomas her father sat down next to Drew. Finally, Fiona sat between Thomas and Dria, and blessed the food. Dria stayed quiet and when it was over, toyed with her fork. Everything was so awkward for everyone, and she knew why, they were walking on eggshells around her and her nonexistent memory.

"Are you alright, Dria?" Thomas asked, "Aren't you hungry?" Dria shrugged. Thomas dropped the subject. "So how was your school day, Drew?" Drew began talking about what he learned in school, and there was something about a history lesson. Dria drifted off into her imagination as she munched on green bean casserole. Suddenly, she snapped back to attention as Drew asked her a question. "You remember that Dria?" Drew laughed. "When we went to Scotland and saw Stonehenge, when we were nine? And fought over that souvenir, until we about fell off the cliff-" He stopped suddenly - a look of horror on his face, realizing what he had done. Thomas dropped his fork with a clatter. Fiona's hand shook.

Dria stared at them. Don't you remember? You remember? Remember? The questions echoed in her mind. It was too much. She shoved her way from the table, sobbing. She ran from the table and out the front door and just ran, her family screaming her name behind her.

Finally she stopped, somehow having made it half across the city. She collapsed on the curb and just sobbed.

hope that is good, if I need to change it I can

Jeremy had received the call that Dria was missing and immediately went to work on locating her. He wasn’t the sort to mess around with a lost kid on the streets; bad things happened in Destiny City.

If he had the power to, he wasn’t going to let something bad happen to her.

He spoke with the family only briefly, trying to cram as much information about the situation as he could in the few short moments he spent with them.

Jeremy was dutiful in his task, and even as the time ticked on, he didn’t stop looking. He couldn’t, not until she was safe.

Things weren’t looking so good, but he persisted--and in the end, in paid off. He rounded a corner and saw a girl fitting the exact description, and a quick glance at a picture he’d been given confirmed it. He parked the police vehicle a street away and moved to meet her on foot. He approached quietly, trying not to startle her, and managed to get just a few feet away.

“Hey,” he said softly, hesitantly, as if afraid to spook her. “...You okay? ...Is this seat taken?” he asked, gesturing towards the space next to her.

Dria looked up at the officer who had slowly come up to her, with look of utter overwhelming pain. "Sure," She answered his question with a quiet voice. "So, they sent you after me. I would have thought that it would have been an officer that was on my case file - since my case is so unusual." She now had the tone of dead tiredness in her voice - as if she had no more emotions left. "So how much, did they brief you on my story anyhow?"

”A bit,” Jeremy answered honestly, but didn’t bother to elaborate more than that.

He carefully sat down next to her, making deliberately slow movements so as not to startle her. "Would you have preferred it be someone else?" he asked, almost sounding apologetic. "If there's an officer you'd rather be here, I can call. We just wanted to make sure you were safe, first. Destiny City can be dangerous, and everyone was worried about you."

He allowed a moment for her to process that and then asked, "You doing okay? ...You sound like you've got it pretty rough."

Dria sighed at the officer's question. "No, you're fine. I'm sorry I ran out like that. I guess it just became too much." She shook her head. "But it's something I'll probably have to learn to live with. Doctor says that my memories may never return." Sighing again, she looked at the officer and asked, "They told you about that, didn't they? I lost my memories four years ago in a plane accident, that also separated me from my family."

I'm sorry, I just can't seem to get your name right lately, redface

Jeremy just nodded slightly; he had gotten a basic backstory and while it was important for him understand, there was a point where the information was just prying.

Dria was a young girl; he didn't want to make her feel like she had no privacy or that he was scrutinizing her

"That sounds really rough. I can't imagine being separated from my brother--much less forgetting about him. Or losing all my memories and having to rely on others? You seem like you must be a pretty brave kid to be holding it together so well, with all that going on. That's a lot of weight you've had to carry on your shoulders."

"Thank you. I guess I got a little too sensitive at dinner." She sighed. "Drew was going on about some trip we went on when we were little, and then it was 'Don't you remember? Don't you remember?' And then I was back in the recovery room 4 years ago with the officer and the counselor - not really understanding that I really had no memory. Drew didn't mean to, he wasn't thinking, but I kind of flipped." She closed her eyes and shook her head.

Jeremy nodded as he listened. "I don't think anyone can blame you for that. It's not your fault. When things get stressful for me, I..."

He seemed thoughtful. "Well, truth be told, running always clears my head. Except, I'm a little older than you, so Destiny City is a little safer for me. Do you have any other hobbies you might be able to do, where you're a little safer? I used to work out, back when I lived in this trashy apartment. It was too dangerous to go for runs late at night. I used to get into fights with my father all the time."

His brows were knit but he shrugged. "I had a punching bag in my room, that helped sometimes. But I just wanted out of the house, just wanted fresh air. I mean, I get it. But you got people back there that care about you, that just want to know you're safe. Maybe we can think of something else to do when you're feeling overwhelmed?"

Dria nodded. "My foster mother owned a floral shop and had me do flower arrangements. I had a talent with the Blue Lotus - a rare flower - with a... potent fragrance. It comes from Egypt, and it seems I'm immune to all of it's halluncinative effects. My foster would have me prepare it so it wasn't harmful to humans. It was quite by accident that we learned my immunity." She took a breath and wondered if she had said too much.

"Oh," Jeremy said; he just nodded and didn't seem to put too much thought into it. He wasn't very educated in the field of flowers so mostly just trusted what the girl said. "Sounds like you were pretty involved with that. Do you know a lot about flowers? Or Egypt?"

He tilted his head, watching her with interest. He seemed relaxed, like this was just any old conversation, like he was really trying to get to know her.

Dria nodded, a little hesitant to answer; this was getting close to her sphere. After a moment, she spoke quietly, "My foster mother had a flower shop like I said. I liked the Blue Lotus enough to do some research on it. Egypt was an interesting place."

Kyuseisha no Hikari
Hi there. Temporarily rented a computer and had some extra time smile how are you?

Jeremy nodded; it was a satisfactory answer for him. "I never got into geography or any other foreign cultures, myself. When I was young, travelling sounded fun, but I guess I'm happier just staying put. I liked adventure, don't get me wrong, but I like knowing that I'm here if people need me. Plus, you know. I got a little brother, myself."

He shrugged, little smile still on his face. "It's good that you've got hobbies. Don't ever let the world stop being interesting, all right? And always follow your passion--unless, you know, it's running out, straight into danger." He cracked a grin--he was teasing. Serious though, he added a second later, "But if you're ever feeling pressured or like you need an escape, you can call me."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a card with his name and phone number on it. "My job is to make sure people are safe, and I want you to be safe. So if you need a friend or just someone to talk to, or get you out of trouble, you let me know, okay? I'll be there."

Dria nodded as she took his card. "Thank you, Officer .. Jeremy..?" She got to her feet and took a deep breath. "I think, I'm ready to go home, Sir." She looked in his eyes and said, "I think I can make it safely home, by myself. Thank you again, sir."

She turned and started to walk away.

"Ah," Jeremy stood up quickly. "That's a long walk home. Come on, I'll give you a lift in the car. I know I'm probably annoying, but I'd just feel better if I knew that you got home safely. I won't be able to sleep if I don't know that you got home safely--and with it getting dark, it'll get a little dangerous. Not that you can't defend yourself, I'm sure," he insisted.

"But, would you mind if I gave you a lift? We don't even have to talk, you can listen to the radio if you like."

It was unnecessary, what with who Dria was - heck she could probably protect him from the real dangers of the night - but she wanted to and appreciated it. "Thank you, I'd really like that."
