When Sanidine was out patrolling, he tried to take Evan with him. He knew very well that Evan was not a fan of the Rift, but he also knew that sometimes Evan just slowed him down. Sanidine wanted to grant him safety but sometimes he just couldn't do that...especially when Evan was always running off.
Sometimes it was after a squirrel or something, but when Evan got too close he'd scare himself and run away. Evan ran away a lot, and Sanidine had gotten used to the sensation of Evan quickly scurrying up his back to perch on his shoulders and tremble. Noises, people, sometimes nothing at all--Evan was always finding something to be afraid of.
Sometimes, though, he wasn't afraid of what he should have been.
For example--when an Eternal Senshi popped up on their radar, Evan should not have perked up and then bolted straight towards it.
Sanidine only caught Evan's feet disappearing around a corner before he realized what had happened and he cursed before running after the youma, calling his name.
Evan either didn't hear or didn't listen; he ran and turned another corner before he spotted her.
An Eternal Senshi with all the right colors, and who he thought he recognized as Lysithea. He charged towards her, chirping pleasantly, only to freeze and skid to a stop a few feet in front of her. He squinted and his ears folded low as he tried to tell what he was looking at. On one hand, it looked like Lysithea, so--good. On the other hand, it didn't look exactly like Lysithea, and now that he was thinking about it, it didn't feel exactly like her either. The hackles on the back of his neck raised and he started backing away slowly, uncertainly.
Sanidine appeared behind him just a few seconds later and looked like he was ready to attack--only, he froze when he saw her, too. He relaxed, though. "Lysithea," he greeted, breathing a sigh of relief. "You got stronger?"

Being an eternal senshi...was very odd. It was great, having more power and great to have a much more amazing fuku, but the whole idea that she was...ready enough to be an eternal was difficult to comprehend, because quite honestly, Lysithea still sort of thought the cat who upgraded her might have been a little high on catnip. When she felt the powerful chaos aura nearby, and the breakaway chaos aura coming at her quite quickly, she froze. It was times like this that she really didn't think she was ready for this...could she really take on a general and a...well, it felt like a youma honestly. Either a youma or a lieutenant. She was quite sure she could not handle both if it was a lieutenant. Thankfully though...it was Evan who came running towards her and a huge smile broke over the senshi's face when she saw him. "Hey!" She dropped to her knees and opened her arms for the little youma, frowning slightly when he began backing away. "No, no Evan honey. It's okay. It's me, It's--" Quickly Lysithea broke off what she was about to say when Sanidine came into view. Well s**t. Saying her real name was not going to help her in this situation. "Ah. Sanidine, yeah...you got stronger too, I see. Congrats..." A slow but fierce heat began to creep into her cheeks and she looked away from him, eyes sliding back to Evan. Damn he looked good.

Sanidine was eying Lysithea's new uniform and nodded approvingly.
Evan didn't seem to have the same interest in what she was wearing; he was just glad that it was her. Reassured both by Sanidine naming her and Lysithea being her usual, lovely self, he ran into her arms and nuzzled affectionately. His whole body wriggled with the force of his tiny tail wagging.
Sanidine lingered a few feet away before he casually approached. He either didn't notice the color on her cheeks, or didn't mind. "You, too. That's a good look, how'd it happen?"
He was genuinely curious, but there was a part of him that was just stalling for time while he gave her a look over. He liked what he saw, but he knew he couldn't like it too much. Or, at least, let anyone know how much he liked it.
He still had Cambria back home, and while Zack might have been a lot of things, he couldn't lose her, too. Not when all he had left of Evan was the overzealous furball currently pressed against the senshi's bosom.

Lysithea drew the little youma close, planting kisses on his head and just squeezing him gently. “You’re okay, Evan. I’m here. I love you, you’re okay.” She kissed his head again and looked up at Sanidine again. “Oh you know. How these things always happen. I met a cat the other night and he was like. ‘You’re ready here have more power!’ and poof suddenly I had wings on my butt.”
She stood slowly, still holding on to Evan as she did so. “So what about you…you’re stronger too, a…general, right? That’s pretty impressive…do you have a great story for your new duds and power?”
Because if he thought she had to have one…well, that must have meant he definitely had one…anyway she really just wanted to talk to Evan but…she couldn’t really talk to him freely with Sanidine here…honestly she really just wanted to hold Evan as Cambria and talk to him as Cambria…
But right now that was impossible.

Evan worked with Lysithea so that when she stood he stayed clinging to her; one of his favorite things seemd to be piggyback rides, but if someone else was going to carry him he was all the happier. He missed Cambria. He knew that this Senshi in front of him was hiding her, and even though the hairs on the back of his neck had risen and his skin had prickled, he didn't attack her. His instincts told him he should, but he knew better, and was too distracted by his good fortune of finding an old friend to pay much attention to anything else.
Sanidine was happy to see Lysithea, but ultimately far less pleased. His lips pursed and he shrugged indifferently. "No fancy story. It was just time, and I was ready. No talking cats, though."
He tried a smile, but it was worn. "But I'll never turn down more power. Especially because it's given me more opportunities to research youma and try to figure his whole thing out," he said, gesturing towards Evan.

Lysithea raised a brow. Well. What a way to be a charmer, Sanidine. What a charmer indeed. “So it’s really just power that you’re after, hm? And here I sort of thought maybe you were really a good guy underneath all of those layers of chaos. Maybe there was a gummy center where you were…you know. Just good. I thought…with as much as you keep saying you want to help Evan here…power wouldn’t have been what you would be going after…”
She shrugged and snuggled Evan closer.
“…You still don’t have any ideas on how to help him? You haven’t found out anything worthwhile…?” It was kind of hard to believe…and worse than that, it was completely heartbreaking to hear as well…because really, what if it meant that Evan couldn’t be helped after all…or maybe Sanidine really just wanted the power and never had really wanted to help Evan to begin with.
Both of those thoughts made her sick to her stomach.

Sanidine just snorted. "The more power I have, the more chances I have to help him. Though, the more power I've got, the less people I have to listen to," he shrugged. "Less people to answer to and distract me. Right now, I really don't give a s**t what Metallia wants. I don't care about her, not until Evan's back to how he was.
"Just because I haven't found anything yet doesn't mean anything just that it's going to take a little longer. There's a way," he insisted, so obstinately that it sounded like was truly convinced. "I can do more, now. Maybe it's just a secret, you know? Like--obviously they don't want people to know how to fix the youma. If they did, Metallia could lose her army--right? I've ready nearly everything in the library. I've got a notebook full of everything important. Maybe...I don't know. Maybe I need to go start experimenting. I mean, there are plenty of guinea pigs in the Rift..."

Lysithea gave a soft sigh as Sanidine spoke and frowned slightly when he started mentioning…experimenting on other youma that were in the rift. “Wait…what? Experimenting on them how, Sanidine? Like, hurting them to try and…help them?”
Her frown deepened and her hold on Evan grew tighter. “Or just hurting them to help Evan? Are they all people too? People trapped as monsters because others…I don’t know. Tried to play God and change them into people filled with Chaos?”
Wow. When had her opinion changed so drastically? Hadn’t she…been telling him she’d corrupt not too long ago? Maybe that’s why the cat had decided she was ready to become an eternal senshi…because maybe she really was.
“Honestly, Sanidine. I don’t see how experimenting on others is going to help anyone out. That’s not fair. It wasn’t fair at all…it was disgusting, honestly. “Maybe you’ll never find a way to help him. Can darkness really help drive away darkness?”

Sanidine stared at Lysithea with a blank expression. The corner of his lip twitched but he remained mostly impassive.
Evan had gone quiet; his tail wasn't wagging and he seemed to shrink just a bit in Lysithea's arms.
"I don't see you doing anything to help him," Sanidine said finally, cold and hollow. "I'm running out of options, Lysithea. There are monsters out there, real monsters, who want to hurt people. I don't even know what I'd do, but I didn't say anything about Chaos."
His hands had balled into fists at his side, and while his eyes flashed dangerous, he seemed strangely devoid of emotions.
"But right now, sort of looks like I'm the only one trying to help him." He looked down at her, at Evan holding onto her. "But if that's how you feel--if that's what you think, you go on and explain to him that maybe he'll be stuck like this because 'I'll never find a way to help him'." He gestured toward the youma clinging to her. "Go on. He's smart enough that he still understand what words mean. Go ahead and tell him how nothing can be done and how none of his friends seem to give a s**t anymore. Tell him how we should just give up and he should get used to his new life, huh? Go on," he pressed, anger rising in his voice.
Evan was quiet, face buried against her. He was trembling, ears folded low.

“Well maybe if you hadn’t gotten him into this mess in the first place, you wouldn’t be having all of these issues! Maybe if you hadn’t been trying to ‘help’ him, you wouldn’t be needing to really help him now! Maybe he would have been fine!”
Or maybe he would have gotten killed…it was a disgusting thought. Her Evan, one of her best friends dead. Or trapped forever as a monster. A cute monster, but still…a monster none the less.
“I just can’t understand how experimenting on other people who are in this situation is going to help anything, Sanidine, and if you think you’re the only one trying to help him, you’re damn wrong. I’ve been trying to find a way to help people who have been turned into youma for years, and I’ve still gotten nowhere! I want to save him just as much as you do, maybe even more than you do. He’s very, very important to me and damnit, I miss him.”
Lysithea was trembling with anger, she wasn’t quite sure if she was going to hit Sanidine or not…but honestly, she felt like she might.
“I just….can’t believe you did this to him, accident or not. I had forgiven you before, but now I think I don’t want to, now that I know you’ll just jump right in to hurting other youma to save Evan, that’s not fair and I think you’re disgusting, Sanidine.”

Sanidine's eyes flashed, and his body language looked far more hostile, but still he didn't move. His eyes were locked with hers, and his hands were clenched so tightly into fists that his nails must have been digging into his flesh. Lips pursed, he seemed to be trying to contain his anger.
Evan showed enough emotion for him; he had shrunk as small as he could be and seemed like he was done being in the middle of them. He pried himself from Cambria with a frantic need, but still seemed to be trying to slip out unnoticed. He was terrified, clearly, and was trembling so badly that he was extremely uncoordinated in all his movements.
He bolted into the nearby bushes as soon as he had the opportunity.
Sanidine looked after him, as though he was going to chase him, but he could always just summon him back. It was better, if Evan wasn't here for this.
"What do you care about the other youma? I'm sure you had no problem dusting them before Evan. You know they pick on him? You know he's terrified of them? There are bad ones. There are ones that attack me when I go down there. What, though--you want me to practice on Evan, instead? When I think I have the answer, you want me to risk losing him entirely? It's not like I said I'd go down there and ******** up some youma just for fun--I don't even have a plan right now."
He was sneering, bitter and angry. Tired, from months of research that yielded next to nothing. Tired, from months of sleepless nights. Tired, from spending every waking minute of free time trying to help Evan. He was one step from a breaking point.
But he was trying to stay calm. He was trying not to hurt Lysithea. She just wasn't making it easy.
He knew he messed up. It wasn't easy for him to swallow his own mistakes, but he had owned up to it, and he hated himself for telling her almost as much as he did for actually doing it to Evan. Of course she'd use it against him.
It didn't matter if he regretted it, if he was trying desperately to correct his mistakes--all of them--she had to rub it in. She couldn't just let him try his hardest to fix things, she had to criticize him, had to be like this. She didn't understand any of it. She didn't know Evan like he did.
And here she was, bitching to him about how much she cared about Evan, and how awful he was.
Like he didn't already know.
He grit his teeth and desperately fought off the urge to start beating the life out of something. He spoke slowly, pointedly. "So, what the <********> do you think I should be doing, since apparently nothing I do is good enough for you?"

Lysithea glared at him and her hands clenched into fists at her side. No. That wasn’t what she was saying…or…or was it. Yeah. It was what she was saying, but he was acting like this wasn’t his fault…this was all his fault, and now it was time for her to do her own thing. Try her own hand at helping Evan.
Without Sanidine in the picture.
Her dark eyes flashed and she held a hand out towards Sanidine. “Maybe the best thing for Evan would be to get him as far away from you as possible. Untamed Purity!” She hadn’t used the attack before, but it felt instinctual to use it, almost as much instinct as to breathe.
She only waited for a moment, long enough to see the attack, some sort of white light, rush at the general, before she was moving to where Evan had run into the bushes. “Ev? Come on. We’re leaving.”
Quickly, she picked up the little youma and drew out her senshi phone, pressing the right button, and disappearing up into space.

Sanidine was thrown back by the attack, unexpecting it. He was unprepared, and though anger fueled through him, it worked in Lysithea's favor--he was so angry that he couldn't think to react.
Attacking him was one thing. Taking Evan was another.
Sanidine growled and saw red, but one single thought flickered through his mind. She wouldn't hurt Evan.
She wanted to help.
But Sanidine didn't think she could. So let her try, try her damndest, and let her understand how ******** hard it all was.
Or maybe she'd fix him, either way.
He didn't summon Evan. Right now, he was going to get a drink.
And seethe.
