A Big Sibling? Apparently that's what the caretakers thought Iolanthe needed in order to come out of her shell more. The fey was more than a little shy of people to the point that others started to wonder if she was an agoraphobic. It wasn't that Io didn't like being around people; rather, she liked people.....she just didn't know what to DO when it came to being around others she didn't really know. That and there was a lot out in the world to be afraid of; elements, predatory animals, mean people and strangers that could snatch you away without a warning! The logical part of her mind told her that a lot of those things were pretty mild and unlikely but she couldn't stop herself from wondering about the 'what ifs.' The caretakers felt she needed a little guidance and a way to break through her fears....so today they had set her up with someone to be a Big Sibling. She was nervous as all get out but at least they were going to do something fun; plant identification! She had a small book about flora in Below and was clutching it to her chest as she stood waiting for her Big Sibling, wondering about what type of person they'd be. She hoped they would be nice.

 Gwen had decided to apply for the big sibling program to get the last credit she needed so she could graduate junior year and move on to her senior year. There was so much that Gwen wanted to know and study. Gwen was to meet up with a young fey freshling to help her with identifying flowers, which was another part of science. Plant science, and since Gwen still hadn't pinned down what science she wanted to study for the rest of her life exploring all of them was a useful idea. Gwen brought along a plant book as well, since she didn't know the names of all the different flowers, for all she knew the freshling might teach her something today.

All of Io's thinking about what her big sibling was going to be like had her distracted and slightly worried. As she wondered about whether this was a good idea or not she spied someone coming towards her.....and she looked every bit the scientist. Instantly her curiosity was piqued and it drowned out her fears for the moment. She seemed to be carrying a book as well, which was a good sign to Io; a like-minded person could be a good foundation. The fey straightened herself out and approached the girl, basically meeting her halfway. "Um....h-hi. Are you my big sibling?" Her voice was a little quieter than normal, still nervous about meeting someone new despite the possible kinship. "I'm Iolanthe....b-but you can just call me Io for short." She smiled shyly up at the junior girl, hoping she was at least making a good first impression.

Gwen nodded "Yes I am Gwen I applied to the big sibling program to work with a freshling. You must be the freshling since we are both out here with flower books." Gwen said simply and calmly. "Nice to meet you, Iolanthe." Gwen nodded and said "Io then, I do not have a nickname since it is rather hard to make Gwen shorter. Alright, then Io which way would you like to go??" Gwen gestured to a meadow with flowers and the forest that also had flowers, that would be a little more scattered. Gwen had signed Io out and agreed to look after her for the afternoon.

Io smiled a little easier when the junior told her her name; Gwen. "It's a pretty name. I think mine is either a type of violet or another word for violet in some kind of language." She mused for a moment before she was asked which way she wanted to go. This.....was not an easy choice. Both places had their pros and cons. "Um....well, the meadow is open and has lots of flowers but they might not be as varied. The forest may have more different types of flowers in it but they would be more scattered...." The fey narrowed her eyes in thought for a moment as she stared at the two different pathways. "We could start with the meadow and then move into the forest border. I have a notebook so I can gather some samples to press and make notes on for my scrapbook." She held up the notebook she had along with the flower book.

Gwen smiled a little and said. "Thank you Io." She listened to the little freshling talk about her name, it didn't bother Gwen she just patiently listened. Gwen nodded since Io was correct about the locations of the flowers. "That is a good idea I suggest we look up the names of the flowers as we go and read information about them, then write down the name of the flower to go in the page you're pressing your flower into. This should be a good learn experience for both of us." Gwen lead the way to the meadow and spotted a violet and said opening the book. "This looks like a good place to start." Gwen said opening the book to point to the violet in the book.

Io smiled and nodded in agreement to the idea of looking up the flowers as they go. She followed Gwen into the meadow and looked closer at the violet she spotted. "Ooooh, I wonder which one it is?" She looked up at Gwen's book and then into her own, kneeling closer to the flower to study it. "Hmmm.....I think this is viola sororia; the common or hooded violet." She nodded affirmatively and jotted down the notes in her notebook, then carefully picked the flower and placed it on the page. "I'll have to look up what sort of medicinal properties it may have later." She smiled up at Gwen and then touched the stem where the flower had been picked from, wishing it well in its regrowth. She then carefully placed the flower to be pressed flat and looked over to find another flower to identify. "Oh, I'm making a scrapbook of medicinal plants; I'm thinking about working in medicine someday."

Gwen listened to Io read off the information, the little fey was very smart about plants. "You are a clever little freshling, do you plant to study plants when you grow up??" Gwen asked curiously. Gwen tilted her head, she didn't know much about violets, she had never considered them having medical properties. Gwen nodded "Alright then let's look around the meadow for other medical plants for your collection." Gwen opened her plant book and found a picture and description of a Trout Lily. "How about we try to find this one??" Gwen said looking at other flowers in the book.

Io blushed a bit, her white speckles showing more against the darkened color in her face; she hadn't expected to be called 'clever.' "Um...I was thinking about it. I like studying plants and flowers and what they can do for people." She smiled a little. "I want to know what ones are best for medicine and work best together. Who know? I may find out other things, too." Io then looked up at the plant book Gwen had at the picture of the Trout Lily. "Oooh, that's a good one." She looked around, walking through the meadow a bit and looking at the book every so often until she found one that seemed to match the picture and the written description. "I found it!" She waved Gwen over and started writing down in her notebook. "Scientific name; erythronium americanum. Wow, that's a hard one. It's also called Adder's Tongue or Yellow Snowdrop. Hmm....says it can be used to dress wounds and reduce swelling, as a tea for fever, fainting, ulcers and swollen glands." Io wrote down bullet notes in her book before she picked the flower carefully and placed it on the page. "There's lots of plants and flowers that can be used in medicine as alternatives to harsher treatments. Some people get better help from plants than anything else. I was thinking I could help with that one day."

Gwen nodded, she didn't really think her complimenting the Io intelligence would make her blush, it really hadn't occurred to her. Gwen thought that Io was smart, so she said as much, Gwen wasn't normally all too arrogant, well maybe she was a little bit arrogant at times. This was a freshling though and she didn't want to be too harsh with them. Gwen nodded listening to Io and helping her to collect and press the flowers for her collection. Gwen nodded "Interesting, I never really thought of plants as having so many uses." Gwen said noticing it was starting to get late she said. "I'm afraid it's time for me to take you back to the freshling dorms." Gwen said softly. She didn't really want their time together to end, but Gwen had other things she had to do.

Io was genuinely having fun while they found their various specimens, the fey careful to use a small amount of magic to encourage regrowth after each one was picked. It was her small way of both apologizing for the harm and thanking them for their sacrifice for her study. When Gwen mentioned the time she looked up to confirm that it was, indeed, getting later. Io frowned a bit and went back to Gwen's side. "I had fun today. Thank you....for doing this with me." She looked up to the junior with a sweet smile. "Maybe we can do something like this again some day? When you have time, of course. Maybe we can study these plants closer or do some other kind of experiment if you have ideas." She made the suggestions softly. She figured that Gwen was most likely a busy person but the idea was nice. Io followed Gwen back to the freshling dorms, thanking her again for taking her out today.
