Harder
Even with Jeremiah acting as mentor to him, Shun was still out and about training on his own. Working under guidance was good, but it wouldn't be as effective as if he were to supplement that with working on his own. Now and then, rather than doing his usual work out routines in the regular world, he would hop over to Other Ashdown to hone himself.
He had to keep pushing himself. Magic use was tiring. He had to build up his stamina for how much he could use. It was effectively a new muscle that had been used little to no times in the past.
So he worked at it, pushing and challenging himself.

Shun stared down at the tennis balls he brought with him. Three of them sat upon the ground before him. He knew his limitations in regular Ashdown, but things were different here. Eyes closed for a short time as he drew in a deep breath, preparing himself.
Once his eyes opened up, he began to focus. All three balls lifted up into the air.
Good.
Standing still, he began to effectively attempt to literally juggle these balls with only his mind. It was a shaky attempt. More than once, something slipped from his mental grasp.

The detective ran through the streets of Other Ashdown, controlling his breath to the best of his ability as he pressed on. He stared ahead at a flickering traffic light some distance away. With a snap of focus, he vanished from his current position, leaving behind a few wisps of his shadow.
A split second later, he was a short distance ahead of where he had last been. As he came out of the teleportation spell, his foot caught on a pothole in the ground, sending him tumbling forward.
Shun cursed under his breath, hissing in pain. Once he was able to, he looked up. That flickering traffic light was still a good distance away from where he had been prior.

Apart from working on outwards magical effects, he also needed to continue his work on the self-applying things as well. There wasn't really one sole area he wanted to focus on over another. He needed to be quick on his feet, but he needed to make sure his strikes had substance to them too. Being able to dodge s**t was well and good, but it meant nothing if he could not go on the offensive as well.
He practiced his form, applying bursts of magic as he made his strikes. He had done this once to an extent, when he slashed up that one trash can awhile back.
Since he now knew that some damages carried over to normal Ashdown, he was mindful of not beating or slicing the s**t out of things around here. He was going to need to find something later, to try it out on, but for now this would do.

Harder
Every time he returned from Other Ashdown from these training forays, he was always exhausted as all hell. It at least helped him sleep. Just a little bit. Some evenings were still plagued with nightmares and rather uncomfortable dreams, but he was faring better than a few weeks ago overall. Outright insomnia was no longer an issue.
That said, this still made for some days where he was incredibly worn and weary, but he didn't stop. He couldn't stop.
Of course, such rigorous training had its risk. And the other side had some that were unique to it.

Better
He began to do more complicated maneuvers with the balls. Sending them further away and pulling them back. There was a problem with this so far, however. If Shun attempted to move around, he found it much harder to be actively manipulating the objects. More mistakes were made once he was in motion.
This needed to change. If he could not do this while physically doing other things, or without moving about in the very least, the usefulness of this technique would drop drastically. He could not just let himself be rooted in place to fling stuff around with his mind.
Maybe he could strike some sort of balance between keeping maneuverability and precision control. Shun was going to need to think on this and how he could refine things. As well as think of other things he could possibly do with magic in case this did not work out in the end.

Shun exhaled slowly as he loosened himself up. He had taken some time to study his surroundings. With him, was a small stack of bright yellow sticky notes. A few of these were placed on a few different surfaces that he could see, at varying distances and directions. Makeshift markers.
Once he was sure he knew were they all were, he readied himself.
Blink.
The detective now stood five feet away from a lamp post. Close, but he was off his mark.
Blink.
A short distance away from a fire hydrant. Still not good enough. He needed to be on the dot.
Blink.
In the middle of the street. He wasn't even close to where he had been trying to go this time around. Hissing, he focused on his next target.
Blink.
A couple feet above--
"s**t!" he hissed as he dropped down on top of a bench, tumbling over its backside and onto the grass behind it.

Shun kept his focus sharp as he continued to work on his form. Sometimes he incorporated blade work, other times he kept it strictly hand-to-hand. It didn't mean quite as much to be striking the air. Right now, he didn't have many other options.
While he was going through his drills, he heard a faint woosh from somewhere nearby.
He barely had time to register this before he felt a blast of cold hit him right in the back of the head.
"Jeremiah," he hissed.

It was about time to find an exit. Shun had expended a good chunk of his energy, leaving him rather exhausted right now. Not to mention that he was a little sore from tripping up a bit here and there. It wasn't quite as bad as when he had started this but it was still something to note.
One problem with the way he worked at things like this, it was hard for him to really see his own progress. Things moved along gradually. There were no large leaps and bounds, but this was to be expected. He just could not easily see how far he had gotten day to day. He only knew that he was getting better to some degree. At least he hoped so.
This was no reason to be slacking off. The detective needed to keep pressing forth if he was to continue to improve.
But for now, he really needed to get some rest, as tempting as it was to just keep going until he could not any longer.

Better
Three rocks orbited rapdily around his body. It still took a fair bit of concentration to be able to do this. But it was a way that allowed him to move about a little more freely. Just not quite as freely as he would have liked.
Sure, it would help keep opponents at bay, especially if he were to replace these rocks with blades. But it was still a bit too clunky to be of any real practical use. So far, anyway. Shun was going to need to iterate on the design of this spell some more.
Gritting his teeth, he flicked his wrists, sending the three small stones out into the distance at a respectable speed. But it left him feeling a bit more tired than it really should have. Yeah, that just had too much of an upkeep right now.
Though, the question was what else could he do with it?

Shun drew in a deep breath as he stared at another rooftop across the street. His last attempt had not gone all too well, but he at least knew how to correct his landing should he mess up.
He stood at the edge of his current roof, judging the distance, then began to back up.
After bouncing in place briefly, he broke off into a sprint towards the edge. He stepped up on a small ledge and launched himself forth, using what magic he could to boost his jump. It wouldn't be enough to make it all the way, but he was counting on it. As he reached the peak of the jump, before he began to drop, he vanished and reappeared a few feet in on the opposite roof.
His feet touched down and he tucked in to roll as he landed. Letting out a breath, he got up and looked behind up. He cleared it.

Perhaps there was a way to solve one of his problems. He lacked sparring partners. One way people got around that to an extent was to shadowbox. Perhaps he could take that in a little more literal direction.
Shun stared down at his shadow upon the ground, mentally calling out to them. A sort of loose request to assist him in this foray. He focused, trying to coalesce the magic where he looked, giving it ideas for what it was he wanted exactly.
Slowly, a dark form rose up from the shadows, humanoid in shape. It bore no distinguishing features. A moment after it finished taking shape, it threw a punch at the detective... only for it to go straight through him.
Hm. Well maybe he could find some other use for this. Unless he could figure out a way to make that solid.
