The young woman glanced at her phone, refreshing her messages in hopes that she would finally get one from any one of her friends. The distraction was something that she needed-- Something that she wasn't getting just waiting around for something to happen.

Normally she'd grab her helmet, hop on her bike and go for a ride. She would chase trouble and flirt with danger until the rush of it all carried her through to new highs. She would ignore all of the nagging voices, tune out the worry and concern.

You can't run from everything.

That was something that Katrina had learned in spending more time with James-- James, who always seemed so steady. James who hasn't been answering your texts.

She puffed out a frustrated breath, snagging a tie to pull her hair back before heading out of the studio apartment she'd rented herself. It might not be in the best part of town, but it was only a few blocks away from one of her favorite tea shops and if she wasn't going to do something completely reckless she needed to find a way to relax. A new tea blend could help her do just that.

He wasn't usually on this side of town, preferring to stick closer to the college and his home, but the interstate had been backed up for hours thanks to a wreck and he'd been forced to take the long way home. It was frustrating in it's own way since everyone else had the same idea and traffic wasn't moving much this way either.

It would have been ignored, loud music and some breathing exercises but he'd spotted a sign for a tea shop and an empty parking space which begged to be pulled into. The shop said it had a cafe inside too which meant they probably served their blends to make you want more so he could at least get a cup of something as well.

Thankfully the store wasn't too busy, though busy enough that he suspected it meant the tea was good, and he got in line while eying the menu. It was probably good no one was paying him any attention as if one looked it was obvious he was still tense and angry about something. The young man at the counter was helpful though and was kind enough to go over some of the house blends with him while he decided what he wanted to drink and what he'd want to take home.

There were more people in the shop than she was expecting for this time of day, which was a slight irritation when all she had wanted was a bit of a quiet distraction. As a result her smile was less than genuine when one of the employees on the sales floor spotted her, approaching her to ask if she'd tried the latest fall blend they'd gotten in. "Thank you, but I'm not interested."

Her tone was terse enough that the young woman stepped back, leaving her alone with a gentle reminder that if she needed anything she'd be right over there. She just barely managed to keep herself from muttering 'thanks, but I won't need anything' in return, instead heading over to where they had the loose leaf available for mixing your own blends.

"I typically prefer them darker, black or chai blends, so I think I will go with these two. If you have any black tea with orange and chocolate in it I would like a small tin of that as well." He was glad the staff member had been helpful and hadn't tried to push anything on him since he wasn't in the mood for that sort of help.

He had found two blends he liked the look of and another that he might come back and get later since it sounded nice even if it was a lighter tea than he usually drank.

As she heard the man at the counter chatting with her favorite barista she paused, rocking on her heels before turning to interrupt. "Whether or not you're going to like their blend depends entirely on how much orange or chocolate you like in your tea. If you know your way around loose leaf it's easier to put your own together... Tastes better too, usually."

Of course, orange pekoe with chocolate wasn't really her thing. If she was going to go for orange chocolate it was generally in the form of a candy ball to be cracked open.

'If one has the time to put that sort of thing together." He preferred to not have to unless he was adding a bit of extra flavor to blends that weren't quite strong enough for him. "And I have a blend much like theirs at home already which I am running out of." He turned slightly to see who had interrupted, slightly surprised to see a young lady.

"Thank you for the advice." Even if it was unsolicited. "This young man's advice has been helpful so I am find with him fetching me a blend to try as you can't really have a bad cup of tea."

"A good cup of tea is worth the time put into the blend... And you must really like tea if you don't think you can have a bad cup of it." When she realized she was still holding on to one of the scoops she set it back down, looking back to the silver haired man once more.

"Does that mean you're open to suggestions? Or just looking to be upsold by the people who work here?" He didn't really seem like he wanted suggestions at all, judging by his body language and the brief glimpse of something that she'd caught on his face as he'd offered the 'thank you'. Unfortunately, she didn't seem like the sort to pay much mind to that.

"Thankfully this young man here hasn't bothered with any up selling and has just done as I've asked." Which was a blessing since he knew there were more expensive versions of two of the blends he'd put together that the staff member could have suggested to get a better sale. "You believe you know their tea better than they do?" He raised a brow, slightly unimpressed that she was still bothering him but she did have a backbone since she was, despite the usually unfriendly expression on his face.

He had two blends on his hands, the smaller size that the shop offered, and wasn't really looking for any others but the young lady seemed determined to get into his business and it would at least waste some time while he waited for traffic to clear.

"I don't believe that I know their tea better than they do. I know that there are some blends that I've tried that Avery hasn't. He's good, but he can only give you the sales pitch from the information packet they've got when it comes to things he hasn't tried. If you're fine with information over experience..." She shrugged her shoulders as if to say 'then you're missing out on things' before looking away from him. He was probably too much of a snob to be in this part of town anyways-- Seemed like it with his sweater and tie, really. He was probably used to having people pick things out for him and make suggestions, likely lacking any sort of real taste at all.

Shaking her head she grabbed one of the 'make your own' tins before opening one of the tea bins to start mixing a 'harvest' blend of her own.

"Considering Avery has tried one of the two I picked up and the other I created myself I think I am going with experience over an information packet." He didn't need some little girl telling him how to get his tea. He'd probably been drinking it longer than she'd been alive. He felt slightly bad for the poor clerk for being called out but he had probably dealt with worse. The two of them at least weren't getting onto him.

He watched her for a moment before laughing softly. He could almost see the gears turning in her head. With her attitude and this neighborhood he obviously didn't belong and that could explain her attitude toward someone 'strange' in her environment.

She paused for a moment, setting the scoop she had been using down once more to glance back over her shoulder, one brow lofted over a bright green eye. "You've actually made your own blend?" There was a decent amount of curiosity in the tone of her voice along with a small amount of disbelief. Curiosity won out, of course, leaving her to ask a follow up question as she shifted on her feet.

"What did you put in your tin?"

His answer, of course, would be a judgement point on whether or not he actually had any taste. She didn't need to say that out loud, though. No sense in making things any more tense than they already were.

"It is a Pu Erh base with coconut and papaya. It's a rather nice go-to for the morning but I usually have to purchase it online rather than finding a shop I can make it in." It was the larger of the two tins he had and if the ingredients proved fresh he would have to come back over here to get more. Having a shop in town would be preferable than having to order it online every time.

"I usually blend my own but I do like getting pre-made blends some times just to try new things. Or for when I have guests who don't actually have any taste." He had a few colleges who got his cheaper teas when they bothered him. They weren't worth the good things since they were always happy with the sub-par blends.

"This is the only place I've found in town that keeps the loose leaf out so that you can mix your own blends-- It means you can make smaller batches if you're trying out something new, as opposed to finding yourself stuck with something online if it's not any good." Her nose wrinkled at the thought of at least one tea she'd put together that had turned out so terrible that there was no redemption for it. She still hadn't brought herself to throw the pouch away, hating the idea of wasting the tea even if it was undrinkable.

"You enjoy earthy fruit blends, then?"

"I do." He nodded. "For most occasions at least. Some mornings call for something a bit stronger and my usual isn't something you' drink if you were trying to sleep." That didn't always stop him from drinking any of it before bed but he preferred sweeter things for that.

"There are a few other places in town that do loose leaf though they're out on the other side of town." Most likely not somewhere she'd gone or would want to find herself given the clientele of those shops.

"They offer loose leaf, sure, but..." She shook her head, nose wrinkling at the thought of the one other place she'd poked into while exploring town. They hadn't let her get anywhere near their loose leaf and had given her odd looks the entire time. Tea was supposed to be comfortable and comforting, not irritating.

"This place is the best." Non-biased opinion, of course. "They also make an incredible vanilla chai latte; one of the best I've found in town."
