Dyakida lacked an affinity with beasts, much as she lacked an affinity with magic or with tree climbing. Neither were in her nature, or in the fate that Aisha had wrapped around her amidst her bloom's petals. However, she knew people who did: Lasarra was one such person, her abilities with beasts well known and well regarded. She was a credit to both of her races and to Aisha herself.
The whip that Dyakida was working on was not really for her, or for anyone in particular. If someone bought it, then Dyakida would be pleased, but in truth she was practicing... for her. For them.
Lerin was another such person of her aquaintence. He was subtler, less known, but he still had that rapport with animals. It was something that Dyakida envied somewhat. She supposed she should be happy with Peyla's love alone, but something in her wished that she could really communicate with her sprite, or with another creature that wasn't either a Sister or an Earthling.
Sometimes, when she wondered what she could have been, she thought she might have been a Guardian. Maybe she could have found that rapport with a radaku or a kinfa, or even one of the foreign beasts like the mammu or the janarim. From what she knew of the beasts of Tendaji, she would have been interested in a xaraan, or a bushi, a snaptrotter, or a keldari. Each beast had it's own advantages or disadvantages. Some, she assumed, were best suited to a spear-guardian or better suited to a bow-woman. She hadn't had the chance to bear a bow, but what potential there was in a beast of her own.
And yet, she didn't have that kind of rapport with any beast, not even Peyla, and the longing in her heart was becoming clearer and clearer. Perhaps that was why she was making a whip. Perhaps that was an expression of her desire to tame an animal.
Clearly, she would have to get herself a pet soon.
