He left a note for her, short, to the point, at her desk at the Police Department.

“Still think you want to know? Meet me – 5pm, park, bench by the fountain.” – Z.

He hoped it was ambiguous enough that if anyone else read it they would be curious but clueless, and it wasn’t as though the benches around the fountain didn’t normally all have occupants. She alone would know who he was and know what he meant.

There was one more line he had added as an after thought though.

“If you know anyone else, you can tell them too. Right now this is a one time deal.”

She'd read the note after coming back from lunch and laughed loud enough that one of the dispatchers came to check that she was okay. After waving him off, Preacher had twirled in her chair once, then twice. It was like a spooky date.

At the appointed time, she showed up, alone, with her hands shoved in the pockets of her puffer jacket. Without a wave or anything, she made her way to Zac and plopped down next to him. "Your note made me feel like I was inna cheesy detective flick, y'know."

“Well you DO work at the police station.” He quipped. Galaxy leggings, floral print boots, oversized black hoodie. Maybe not the best combination but he was comfortable.

He took a deep breath and picked up something from the bench beside him, a heavy fabric bag with a cross body style strap, it shifted as he moved it implying objects within.

“... my eyes are galaxies, that’s why they look strange and black - people are dying left and right, I can’t do anything right and if you want my advice on how to survive ash down I say run. But if you’re not going to here is your kit because sooner or later s**t will hit the fan.”

He forced a small smile onto his face. “At least… I’m 90% sure that I can’t do anything right because the person who I was trying to free from Other Ashdown has gone missing and my assumption is it means she’s dead. Apparently being upset about that makes me ‘irrational’. How are you.”

Preacher listened as Zac babbled on a bit. Clearly something was very, very wrong. Once he ran out of steam, she grabbed his chin, forcing his head around so she could easily stare into his eyes. Then, satisfied, she let go.

"So, which one are they?"

“I wish you wouldn’t -grab- me in the future.” He said frowning. “And which one are who… the person I know is missing or?” He shook his head and sighed softly.

“Heliodora, I assume you mean.”

"Nah. You said your eyes are galaxies. So... which one are they?"

He blinked at that, and gave a small laugh that was more shock than anything. “I .. don’t know. It’s just collections of stars to me, Someone said they looked like galaxies now. They used to just be blue.”

"Ah, it'd be kinda cool if they were like, y'know, scientifically accurate." She shrugged. Now that that was out of the way, it was time to dissect the rest of what he'd poured out.

"As for whatall you were sayin' earlier... one: I can't run because I don't run and there's nowhere to ********' go." She had a job here, the possibility of making something of herself more than the useless ******** she'd always been told she was. And, she couldn't just hitch hike somewhere else and start all over again. Zac earned a glare for suggestion she run like she was some kinda coward who couldn't take a little spooky now and then.

She huffed. "Two: you're doing some s**t right 'cuz you're alive. Three: how the hell is Hellodora missing your fault?" Preacher had no idea who the ******** that was - the name rang a bell, but it was distant, fuzzy, like a newspaper she'd skimmed.

“Actually…” He said and took a breath. “I may have died once. It was strange. I got … eaten by something. So let’s be honest, I’m doing something wrong. “There is something memorable about being impaled and then eaten by a, giant angler fish mixed with a spider.” He rubbed at his face and sighed. ‘Sorry m eyes aren’t scientifically accurate to my knowledge. Maybe they are some kind of eldritch constellation for all I know.”

“It’s my fault in so much as I was trying to get her home, but I didn’t make it in time. it’s just one more person who’s dead and unlike me they didn’t come back. I mean you can keep giving me s**t but I’m trying to tell you what you’re so desperately trying to be a part of. But if you start dreaming about ‘other places’ and just keep dreaming of that place… don’t blame me.”

"How do ya... not know if you died?" He got eaten by a weird-a** spider thing and it sounded more like a bad trip than a thing that actually happened. "And your eyes're cool anyway. It's whatever." She bounced her leg as he spoke.

"Okay, okay, hold the ******** up, Zac. I never said I wanted to go to some rainy s**t wonderland - don't put words in my mouth! I wanna know about s**t because s**t keeps happening! That's not ********' stupid, but you... you." She ran a hand through her hair. "You were tryin' to get so-and-so home and okay, she ran off afore you could. Not your ********' fault. Why're you so readily layin' goddamn blame at ya own feet for what other people are doin'?"

“If I died why am I back basically. So I don’t know if I really died or if that was some ‘Other Ashdown’ bull-puckey to screw with my head. And I tried telling you multiple times before that the more you learn the more likely you are to get sucked into all of this. It’s just a trend I’ve seen.”

He sighed.

“The thing is, she can’t run off, she was trapped there. She said it wasn’t something that she could do, so it… it means she’s probably dead.”

"Bullshit." To all of that. "Does it really matter then if you 'died'? And either I learn s**t and ooooooh, maybe I get sucked in, maybe not. Or I stay ignorant and get ******** up, down, and sideways." She leaned in close to Zac.

"I do not wanna get ********, Zac." Preacher leaned back and glared at him. "And, if you're so worried about what happened, go ********' find her! You can wander about in rainy s**t land all ya want, find a witness, ask around, see anybody suspicious - go hound them! s**t doesn't go unnoticed."

“I am planning on it. I just wanted to wrap some loose ends up, just in case. That other world is dangerous, people die and stay dead rather than have dreams about being…impaled and consumed.”

he exhaled. “I don’t want you ******** over either. But suspicious and confronting that isn’t necessarily as easy as it sounds. Just…be careful.”

He shoved the bag at her.

“This is an…ash down kit, thats what I call them. it has an umbrella, and protein bars, and a little first aid kit. The bars are because the food in that Alternate Ashdown all tastes like sawdust and ashes. So if you find yourself there then you won’t be hating life quite so much okay?”

"I'm as careful as a buttercup in a hurricane." She waved off his concern. "Lemme know what happens with Heli, okay? Do the whole buddy system s**t ro something." For the time being, he wasn't shitting on himself all about that, so that was good. While Preacher wasn't above beating some sense into him, she didn't think it'd stick. Then her arms were suddenly full of bag.

Preacher looked at the kit interestedly. "One: do people really stay long enough in rainy s**t land to need to eat? And two: so what'd I owe ya then?"

“I will, I’ll let you know.” he promised. He did give a small laugh about her last questions though.

“I… I mean if I got stuck there I worry that someone else might. And…you don’t owe me anything, I make these for people all over town. I had…good company today, I made a new friend. I learned a few things. I - I would say we are even.”
