It had seemed that the fetch had absolutely no problem spending his money. Not that Jeremiah really had an issue with it but just that-

It was still a chunk of money.

At least he did not have to worry about a housewarming gift anymore but it certainly did not stop him from going by the new house they were living in. See what had happened, what it had done in his place.

... besides get him a promotion.

Jeremiah knocked on the door, umbrella lowered and shook out before he closed it, and waited.

both leila and eve don't have to be here, lol, i just listed it that way in the title because it made it easier for you to pick and choose <3 (this is a terrible start i am so sorry)

"Jeremiah! Hi!!"

Leila went in for the hug immediately. They were on hug basis now. Right?

Except not really.

Jeremiah was stunned enough that he couldn't even really take a step back because since when were they on the hug basis?

WHAT HAD THAT FETCH DONE. WHAT BLACK ARTS HAD IT WROUGHT UPON THE WORLD.

Strangely enough it seemed as if Leila just could not get her arms around him when she was actually there. They would just slide right off, as if his clothing was slick, and that was enough time for him to step back finally.

"Leila," he said slowly because apparently he would need to get straight to the point with this hug business, "it was a fetch."

That was about the quickest Jeremiah had ever seen the blood drain from Leila's face. And they'd started their professional relationship looking at corpses and really, really gross houses.

"You mean I hugged a--" ********, that gave her the creeps. Undead were alright in her book considering Aleksy was one, but undead who pretended to be other people was a whole different kind of unfamiliar. The bad kind. So she allowed Jeremiah his space, holding her hands up in front of of her and taking a deep breath to ground herself. Never mind that touching him was suddenly as impossible as grabbing minnows out of a bait bucket. "Well, that's the worst news I've gotten all week. Go ahead and come in."

The living room and sofas were easy to find, and one of them was occupied by Eve, Julian and a contentedly sleepy Clover getting head scritches from the former Fitzpatrick. Eve offered a wave and pointed to a not-quite-empty and still good pot of tea on the coffee table. When Julian noticed their visitor, however, he had a very brief deer-in-headlights moment before diverting his attention back to hemming a new pair of pants.

It was almost saccharinely domestic.

"Yes, well." A look flickered across his face, Jeremiah's expression falling before he got it under control. As much as he did not want to hug, he did put a hand on shoulder and squeeze lightly. "I didn't quite expect him to do what he did for you but I certainly don't regret it. The dining set he picked out looked lovely."

Except the hugging part. That was clearly kind of. No. Except that Jeremiah was, in all honesty, not alright with contact in general at the moment. It was what happened when one had actually been, in some ways, on fire.

"Eve," he said with a smile, slipping into the living room. Julian was given a look over and then he was looking back between both women. "This is ... your nephew?" Definitely making for that tea pot however and trying to not read too much into the fact that Julian clearly had had some kind of run-in with the fetch.

A little bit of the color came back to Leila's features at the shoulder squeeze. Not a lot, but enough for her to get her composure back most of the way.

"Good to see you again, Chief," Eve greeted with the usual enthusiasm. "The dining set isn't the only thing your double got to spruce up the place. Check in the bathroom when you have a minute, it's just around the corner past the kitchen." She'd overheard, did her best to partition aside her feelings on the topic and proceeded as normal - a wordless nod had been given at the once-again correct pinning of Julian as her nephew.

Julian was terrifyingly confused, albeit little less so when mention of doubles came up. So there were magical doubles of people too for some reason. And the Jeremiah he'd met before was one of them.

That meant...

that meant he had a do-over.

"Nice to meet you," he offered, not a second of contemplation too soon. "If I'm following this right."

Jeremiah paused mid step, the neutral expression faltering briefly and he was there but Eve had always been able to bring Jeremiah out. "I find myself living in fear of just what potential thing he brought."

He glanced towards Leila as if she might give him some clue but there was no help there but at least color was returning to her face.

He finished his steps, the teapot claimed as well as his preferred teacup that was with the set. He paused once more, straightening up as Julian spoke up. Unfortunately the silver-haired man still smelled good but this time he at least did not flash the young man a ridiculously charming smile.

Instead he just inclined his head slightly. "You are. Jeremiah Mercer," his tone was calm and even unlike before, but his hand was held out all the same, "Chief of Police." His eyes glanced towards Eve and then Leila. "Of which I walked into when I returned." He had bucked and dodged promotions for years and now-

Now he had not been able to but at least he didn't seem too bothered.

"Julian Fitzpatrick." Absolute failure was the title on the back of his mind as an end to his introduction, but he elected not to speak that aloud. Eve had already endured enough of his self-aggrandizing, and imposing it on a guest he barely knew would be in awful taste. Regardless, he was immeasurably grateful to God in Heaven (whom he generally didn't acknowledge on principle) that the real Jeremiah Mercer wasn't so much of a ******** tease. No, not that kind.

Okay, maybe a little bit that kind.

Oh, but Jeremiah looked so concerned about whatever horrors his fetch had wracked while off in what was probably Noble Hell, if Thorne's experience had been any indication. "Tell you what, Mercer." Leila's tone was facetiously professional here - which was about the level of affection their friendship generally afforded, especially after the cruel revelation they weren't on hug basis after all. "We'll return it if you really don't like it being around the house. Or burn it. Your pick."

Jeremiah Mercer was absolutely that kind of tease but it was reserved for special people and those he was truly comfortable with. Thankfully Julian would be spared. Unless something happened like in that one episode of Buffy where every older person started acting like their teenage selves.

Then Julian was doomed.

Hopefully that would not happen.

"It's good to meet you," he said, entirely genuine. His head tilted towards Leila and then quickly towards Eve and back once more. "It's fine. You hung it up, it can't be that terrible." Jeremiah would have a look later and be horribly amused and then proceed to tell Eve that fetch him had terrible taste in Vargas girls.

Eve poured herself another cup of tea. "It's not about the quality, it's the associations it has," she explained.

Jeremiah blinked, head tilting slightly as Eve spoke. "A moment."

Which meant he slipped out of the living room area and down towards the bathroom and-

He was back a moment later and sighed. "I see he used up his taste on the dining set then."

"Bloody hell," Jeremiah finally groaned, a hand pressing to his forehead.

"Removing the painting is fine. Do whatever you want with it in that regard." Burning it would be to appropriate. Though he was likely to show up with another painting to replace it.

This was Jeremiah. He did go overboard with gifts.

Always.

That was all the gifts covered, it seemed like. Leila stood back for a moment to think on anything else that had happened since the last time they'd seen the real Jeremiah that might stick out at him. The changes in the weather around both layers of Ashdown were glaringly obvious... she was kind of waiting for him to notice the incubating eggs on the dining table at the far side of the room so she wouldn't seem too desperately eager to bring them up... so really, there wasn't-- wait.

"Mercer, holy s**t. This might've happened after you came back, but. Kuroda stopped by, and some other weird s**t happened, but the important thing is Julian pointed out-"

"Shadow the Hedgehog," Julian interjected.

Leila drew a fist up over her grinning face, her jaw clenched in an admirable, but barely successful attempt at restraint. "Lady's been playing this game, and. He sounds just like him."

Actually those eggs were next on his list since he had walked back into the living room and they were right there but more importantly-

"Which Shadow are we talking about here?" He cleared his throat a moment. "More recent games or ... Sonic Adventure?" Blue-green eyes glanced over to Julian and then back to Leila with some level of amusement. No, he would not feel ashamed he knew video games.

He had raised Zac after all (and played a few of them).

Either way, he was clearly amused by it. Hopefully his fetch did not actually put that knowledge to use otherwise-

Well.

you can assume the fetch asked the same question because, you know, he ttly wanted to make sure he got the right figurine and voice to put on shun's desk |:
