Leila was a bit nervous about all of this. She'd talked plenty with her wife about her frustration with magic: in regular Ashdown it was unpredictable and fickle and seemed to have a cruel sense of humor, to boot. While Eve seemed to be having a good time with it all, even finding it liberating, Leila felt more boxed in by it each time another power manifested itself. And on top of that, Eve's latest suggestion was... more magic. It left Leila feeling a bit put out and pessimistic about the meeting they'd set up with someone she'd never met in person. What was willfully bringing more of that s**t in her life supposed to accomplish? There was a Jamba Juice on the Rider-Waite campus that was as good a meeting place as any, so there she was with a Razzmatazz waiting for the person to arrive.

A redhead that may be vaguely familiar from around town entered the place, practically bouncing on her toes as she ordered a large Mega Mango. The place was fairly quiet at the moment, so the girl's gaze scanned the room and immediately fixed on Leila. "Hi! Are you Miss Eve's honey?" From the confines of the girl's sweater, a blue feathered head popped out from under her collar to get a good look at this Leila woman.

"Hi. Uh, yes! I am," Leila answered, getting up to go in for a friendly handshake (her dad would be proud). "She doesn't call me honey, though. I'm Leila, and holy s**t is that a bird." She was doing her best not to stare at it. Julian had reminded her recently that such behavior was a surefire way to stress a bird out.

America called just about everybody honey at one point or another, so she was sure she could make up the deficit in due time. The girl grinned at the question and took her drink to Leila's table. Settling in with a sip, she then opened her collar a little wider, and the bluejay stuck its head out even further. "This is Mr. Bitterberry. He's my partner of sorts." Sticking out her other hand, she went on, "And I'm America Jones, pleased to meet you!"

"Partner, huh?" asked Leila while breaking off the handshake. She also noted America's partner-of-sorts was a bluejay: known to many as the a*****e Bird. Not that she minded, since there were always crows nearby when she was around. "Wait... you mean like you all who showed up at Blackfriars with the animal pals?" Friend tickled Leila's wrist from under her shirt sleeve, reminding her that he was technically also an animal pal while also asking if he could eat some of her cup when she was finished with the non-food in it.

"Wargs, yeah!" America beamed across the table and Bitterberry...well he was inspecting the place for food to claim and anything shiny and small enough to take off with. He was indeed, the a*****e Bird. "We were all trying to meet up and figure things out that night, didn't manage too much and there were some..." a small grimace,"...losses." Which were apparently nothing she planned on dwelling too much over, as she moved past that night and further into the present day concerns. "Still, me n'him have managed well enough. We're family at this point, n'kind of each other too..." The jay's eyes fixed on Leila's wrist.

Oh hell no, Mr. Bitterberry. Leila slapped her hand protectively over Friend's perch on her wrist, and gave the bird an intense glare for good measure. "Yeah, Eve took the s**t at Blackfriar pretty hard. Speaking of... I think I'm starting to piece together why she wanted me to meet you. You give warging lessons, I'm guessing?"

At the gesture, America figured out what was going on right quickly, and took a moment to speak quietly to the bird. "Not food." It is a food." Not food." Is."Bad." A pause. How can I know if I don't eat?"Bribes."The bird settled back down into her shirt with a dire look and a gleam in his eye. Bribes was shorthand for, I'll make it up to you later you fat little extortionist."Sorry," America gave her a chagrined look. "Yeah...well,kinda. He's going to." America dipped her chin toward the jay. "And I'll be the, y'know...human interpreter. See, he was the one who bonded to me first and did the groundwork you'll be doing if you decide to go through with things."

if you decide to go through with things-- That made something click in Leila's mind, and her demeanor began to shift from cautiously friendly to... genuinely interested. Setting her smoothie down mid-sip, she leaned forward to give both America and Mr. Bitterberry another look. "So I can just... learn how to do this? And not get totally roped into it if I don't want to?" America said that her familiar had chosen her, but the implication was that was an exception to how the warg thing normally happened. The fact the familiar would be the teacher didn't give her much pause, given the continuous counsel she received from an insect. Friend didn't have much to say on the topic of warging besides an adamant beaming of NO!! We are Not Food!! while he climbed to a safer hiding spot behind his charge's ear. "I'll be honest here. I hate magic. The main thing it seems to do is make major life decisions for you, and the longer it's around the more this place looks like an apocalypse in progress." Leila gestured outside, to the impossible rain and slimy business on the sidewalks. "But..." her voice began turning quiet, bashful and confessional: "I like biodiversity- I like animals- and when I was a kid i daydreamed about being able to talk to them. Is that what it's like?" Another glance at the bird.

"There's magic you can learn," America nodded. "Or at least feel out if it's in ya." She waggled her eyebrows in a silently added that's what she said."This wasn't what I learned for myself," she admits, "but when I did get to choose, it felt like a piece of control coming back into my hands. Made magic mine instead of something I'd just sorta ended up with." And with that choice had come others: to stay, to help further, to teach. America shook her head, though, laughing a little as she explained, "It's not the Dr. Dolittle gig, if that's what you mean. Pretty sure that's possible, but it took awhile for me n'him to be able to talk-talk. Before that, it was more like...learning to communicate as best we could with tone and how we move and that sorta thing. He's the only one I can really talk to, as well." Taking a sip, she goes on, "It's like getting an extra limb, except they're their own person, too."

Leila snickered without restraint at America's little quip. And, for good measure, added in a look that said something along the lines of I've done my fair share of feeling out, and then some. Friend chimed in Leila's head with a me too!!!, evidently not quite understanding the meaning of the euphemisms being exchanged. She nodded through the rest of the explanation, attentive and starting to get genuinely curious. "Alright, then... so how does this work -- wait, should I be asking Mr. Bitterberry that?"

With a wave of her hand, America answered, "Naw, he can't understand you. But the first step is finding the right partner." Turning a bit more solemn, she added, "It's for life. You lose them, you lose a piece of yourself. They think they might lose you? They might die just doing their damnedest to save you. So it can't just be any old anything. There's gotta be a possibility between you, a little love at first sight. But maybe it's more like seeing a bit of yourself in the mirror that you never noticed before, and liking what you see." The bluejay gave a soft gurgle, and America went on, smiling again, "He liked how I was bright and loud. How I cared for my nest and put it where I pleased. He says I'm bossy and take the best food, wherever I go." She was giggling by the end. "He's not wrong."

"So there's consent involved for both of you," Leila offered in an attempt to summarize. "That's good, though." Even with that aside, it sounded like as heavy a commitment as... well, as marriage. She could already hear the wisecracks Eve could make about her bonding with a familiar, with that in mind. Then again... this was her wife's idea in the first place. Love at first sight, though... that meant she wouldn't just go out wandering out the state park and throw a magic pokeball-analog at the neatest looking critter she saw. Even that first step was going to take luck and work. This was, in all honestly, a brand of magic she could get behind -- planned, carefully considered, and ethical for all parties involved. "What happens next? I'm guessing there's a difference between a regular bond with an animal and the magic one you have. Do you just... feel it out somehow?"

There was a shake of the head, "I didn't consent, I didn't know what was going on. Like if it was bad water or a brain tumor or something else. I think, though, if a party isn't willing on some level, it'll be a lot harder making it work and afterward, make it work well." She gave Leila an apologetic look, "They probably won't be able to understand you for it unless you can find a magical interpreter of sorts." A pause and then, "Miss Sunny probably could. She could talk with Mr. Bitterberry here before I managed it." Maybe it'd help Leila avoid those worrisome first few weeks. "Did you science it out or use feelings, hun," America dipped her chin to quietly ask the bluejay. There's some preening and a soft warble and then, "He says he gave me his eyes and I took them." She paused, trying to figure out a bit better phrasing. "I guess it's a matter of reaching out and finding them reaching back."

"You make it sounds like Mr. Bitterberry's the one doing magic here," Leila admitted.
