Aldren lingered even closer to home than usual, after his most recent unappealing exchange with his younger sibling. They were trying to get rid of him, when he didn't want to be gotten rid of. Not while he still felt needed, anyway, and he did feel extremely needed, as it pertained to his little sister. Seph couldn't manage life on her own, and their uncle didn't know how to care for her as well as Aldren himself did, of course.

Still, despite his own wishes, he attempted (mostly) to leave her to her own devices, observing quietly from the sidelines and struggling to wait to step in only when it became absolutely necessary. Maybe if he didn't push her now, she would forget about her threats, and they could resume their mundane daily routine.

It was surprisingly tiresome.

They day was a sunny one, with light bouncy off shards of ice and snow and turning everything this blinding shade of white that really just insisted you close your eyes against it. So he did. Aldren didn't usually find himself outside doing nothing (as there were always plenty of chores to be done), but today, he did. He lay in the snow, back flat against the mass of white powder, facing upwards and eyes closed against the sun's rays.

"You know if you lay out in the snow like that you'll catch a cold," Zumei laughed, knowing good and well that was highly unlikely. Aldren was used to this sort of weather. She on the other hand....well she remembered gloves this time at least. Though still no coat. After departing from the ice lad after their adventure to Oba she had attempted to go back to tavern work to save up a bit more money, but it had been too dull for her to handle. She needed adventure. She needed excitement. She needed to show a certain ice boy the world. At least that's what she had decided her mission was today. Convincing him would be a challenge she was sure, but she was ready to use whatever was necessary to get him to come along.

"Is this really what you've been doing without me around to fill every second with excitement? That's just not okay!"

The dull crunch of boots in the snow alerted him to someone's approach. It wasn't staggered enough to be his sister, but perhaps his uncle, coming to speak to him as Aldren had feared for the past several days. He turned his head in the direction of the sound, squinted open his golden eyes, and only saw a dark silhouette against the sun's rays. The corners of his lips tugged down. He wasn't ready for this discussion. Not ready.

Then, to his great surprise, Zumei's voice drifted through the cold air. Aldren sat up sharply, golden orbs popping open again to stare at her and face brightening all but immediately in her presence. "Zumei!" He chirped happily, bolting to his feet and flinging his arms carelessly around the shorter blond woman.

"Oh, I didn't know if you were still hanging around after the festival. I thought for sure you'd have moved on and found somewhere more interesting to-" But that didn't much matter, did it? He lapsed into silence, winding his arms tightly around her shoulders and holding the woman snugly against him. "I missed you. It's good to see you."

He peeled back enough to peer at her, smile still in place and had to wonder if she was really concerned about him catching a cold. Surely not. He scritched the back of his head with a shrug. "Well, er, no, not all the time," he admitted. "Just- ahh, well, it's not so bad. It seems warm, if it's bright enough. And it is very bright today. I'm sunbathing, you know."

"Sunbathing? I hope you're not trying to get a tan. If that's even possible," the wind girl laughed, resting her head against him. She was surprised by his eagerness to hug her, but enjoyed it all the same. He had always been a positive presence as far as she was concerned, and any contact with him brightened her mood. She pulled him down then, trying to get him to settle back down in the snow with her. It was cold to the touch, but she'd endured worse before.

"Come sit, tell me how things have been. I need to hear everything!" she exclaimed, sitting close beside him. "How are things? How's your sister?" She would be lying if she said she wasn't curious about every detail, but she was also wondering if there were any other pretty girls she had competition with. Distantly she could hear the sounds of creatures floundering through the snow, but for now her main focus was on the lad in front of her.

Of course he hadn't expected her to pull away. Zumei was a bright, chipper, friendly girl, and Aldren couldn't think of a time when she'd specifically avoided contact with him. But neither did he fully expect her to lean against him either, with the soft waves of her blond hair dusting his chin and her laughter reverberating through the thick fabric of his clothing. He swallowed thickly, and the cold receded with startling immediacy wherever they touched. When she tugged him down, he nearly dropped.

And it was only because he'd been in that snow moments earlier that he had the wherewithal to take pause. "Er, hold on just one second," Aldren murmured as he unfastened his cloak from around his neck and splayed it across the snowy ground. It was still nowhere near as comfortable as it might've been if he just invited her into his home, but the cold seemed useful in its own way, at this point.

Once she was settled on the furry fabric of his cloak, he dipped to her side and took it upon himself to help keep her warm, but nudging her close and tight against him.

"Well, it's..." He scritched at his hair. "Nothing too interesting, really." He shot her a grin that didn't quite make it to his eyes. "You know there's not much going on here. Seph is the same as she's been. Stubborn and opinionated. She's trying to talk my uncle into sending me off to explore and such. But you know- she knows, that I really couldn't go anywhere without her..."

Anyway, it wasn't important. "But how about you? I really didn't think you'd come back here, well, ever."

"Well I was hoping to steal you away in the middle of the night like the most terrible of bandits, but if you feel more comfortable here then I can just stop and visit you until you get annoyed," Zumei joked, though there was a slight drop in her voice as she said so. Traveling with him had made her adventure less lonely, and since their departure last time moving around hadn't been quite as fun. She did however know he was much more responsible than she would ever be. She had just ignored it until now.

"I'm sure your family is very proud with how responsible you are. You've always been responsible though. Unlike me," she continued, leaning back against his cloak.

"You think you'll ever leave home? Go exploring or something else? I don't think I could sit here this long without getting restless, but you seem to be doing well. Though I guess I'm just one of those crazy wind nomads after all. Your people are more used to staying in one place."

'Steal me away.' He mouthed the words silently, brow pinching in mild confusion laced with just a bit of amusement. Aldren knew enough about fairy tales (he did have a little sister, after all), that he was pretty sure that he was supposed to be doing the stealing. Naughty boy, pretty girl. That was just how it worked. But that wasn't relevant enough to comment on. Instead, he settled his chin against her hair and retorted, "You don't really think I'd ever be annoyed by your visits, do you?"

She sounded just ever-so-slightly more put-off by the thought than he was prepared for. Aldren did fancy that they were pretty good friends by this point, so if there was something upsetting her...

"Ah, I'm not really..." So responsible? Well, he didn't want to be, anyway. Aldren did really enjoy the idea of exploring, and if Zumei wanted to 'steal him away,' he couldn't imagine doing it with anyone else. But still... "I'm not sure," he muttered quietly with a shrug. "I did enjoy traveling with you, but I can't leave Seph. I promised." A long, long time ago.

And he was starting to feel restless. He really never should've gone to Oba. He had that one taste of adventure now, and he wanted it so bad. More than anything else before.

He tried to focus on other things and pulled a small smile back to his features. "You folk are rather crazy, aren't you," he teased lightly. "But that's what's fun about you. You must never be bored. You always look so happy. It's exciting, isn't it? To just... do whatever you feel like doing?"

Aldren didn't know it yet, but slinking toward them, desperately seeking heat in a land that had so little, was an unfamiliar creature, looking to give the pair of them a bit of a start.

"Sure we do whatever we feel like doing, but it's not the easiest life," Zumei explained, fingers tracing light patterns in the cold snow. "You always worry when you're going to eat next, where you're going to stay. Sometimes a home to come back to would be nice, if only for the safety part. Still I suppose you're right. Adventuring and not being chained down does have its perks."

"I just wish I had someone to share the adventures with. Maybe someone to help warm my bed-" Zumei paused her speech, tensing as she thought she saw something moving around in the snow. Was it her imagination though or something more?

"Did you see that?"

Aldren scritched his cheek and tossed his golden gaze skyward. It was nice to have a home and family and a positive assurance that he wasn't likely to die in the night from the elements or a feral animal attack. But that certainly didn't make this life 'easy.' Living in Zena would always be work, whether he had his own home or not, what with the unforgiving climate and scarce resources. So if he was going to be struggling anyway, he felt like there ought to be a little more excitement to it.

"You probably shouldn't be traveling alone," Aldren replied with a small frown in her direction. "Things like shelter and food probably come easier when there's a group helping out, buuuut... Hm, well... I don't guess I've ever seen you with any other Wind tribe, before?" He said hesitantly, more a question than a statement.

Ah, it didn't make much sense to him. He thought they usually traveled in families, but Zumei seemed to be doing will enough so far. So Aldren shrugged and twisted to lean closer to her. "I dunno what you're complaining about," he chortled. "You could have anyone you wanted in your bed, if you only asked. And they'd be lucky to have-"

He quieted as his gaze followed his companion's to a moving bump slipping beneath the edge of the cloak he had splayed out on the ground and edging toward them. Whatever it was wasn't a large creature, by any means. And Aldren stretched out to drop his boot in the slithering creature's path. "Dunno what that could be," he grunted. "Nothing so small lives here."
