Her mentor had sent her off to go gather herbs for a potion and Arima had found the day quickly slipping by. Of course he wants three of the rarest plant that's not in the market for sale... Pursing her lips thoughtfully the girl read the list one last time before slipping it in the bag at her side. She had already gathered everything save for that last bit so hopefully it wouldn't take much longer. However, as she walked around the edges of an oasis Arima found that time was slipping away from her. Soon enough the sun was hovering barely an inch over the sky and the rays of a sunset were beginning to dim as evening took over for the day.

Just one more... Grabbing the plant, Arima pulled off the precious leaves before adding them to her herbal pouch. She was thankful that was done, "Finally~" Sighing, Arima turned to leave the area before a shiver ran down her spine. Was...was there something here? Gaze narrowing with suspicion the girl turned on her heels before letting out a soft squeak as something flew past her and into the dark...

WIP Leukos
PostPosted: Mon Oct 03, 2016 11:35 am

It had been a busy day at the circus.

The morning had started off without a hitch, everything proceeding as normal. But in a cascade of events no one had seen coming, one mistake led to another until it had all piled up into an awful mess that everyone in camp had to run around trying to solve. Props broken, animals loose, riggings snapped: it was a miracle they were even able to get everything sorted out in time to run their show as usual. But needless to say, everyone was exhausted, and once he had changed out of his costume Leukos took the first opportunity to slip away on his own. He bought a snack in the marketplace and found a nice little secluded oasis to settle down at. Leukos laid on the soft sands, letting his feet lazily float in the cool water, an arm under his head. He contently sat in this quiet solitude, dozing off a few times, until he noticed the sun had dipped low on the horizon. Soon it would be down for good, leaving him in darkness alone.

He began to sit up, but froze as his hand brushed against something smooth and warm. The rocks should all be cool by now... Looking slowly behind him, he was confronted by the bulging eyes of the largest bug he had ever seen, its huge mandibles clacking together ominously. In a manner most unbecoming for a young man, he shrieked and clamored to his feet, stumbling over his discarded shoes and lurching into the water. The insect flew towards him and over his head, disappearing into the long grass. His heart pounding, he barely heard the soft squeak of a female voice in the direction the creature had flown off to.

Eek!

Arima's cheeks were flushed as she spun on her heels and dashed through the sands. It was a rather silly sight to see how the Matori flailed in the darkness, but with the use of her gathering basket she managed to chase away the large insect. At least for a moment. Still, hearing the buzzing noise once more caused the girl to back a few steps - through some long grass and towards water. As she moved she swore the buzzing was coming back and indeed it was. Once more the creature swished through the air and towards her face...

"Shoo!" She hissed through her teeth as she attempted to see what it was that was assaulting her in the darkness. Yet, all she managed to do was back into the form of something else that also made another squeak escape her lips. "What?!" Her gaze flashing the girl reached for her staff before pausing in mid-swing to spot that it wasn't a strange creature, but rather another Matori who was also in the water. A rather handsome boy who she had almost nailed in the face with her staff like a fool...Needless to say she found herself speechless as a bright flush lingered on her cheeks.

Leukos was aware of the sounds of movement in the darkness, there was some sort of scuffle he couldn't see. He strained his eyes to try and make out the forms through the long grass, when suddenly the activity was upon him, a figure splashing into the water and bumping into him with a shout. In the faint moonlight that had started to illuminate the inky darkness, he saw a petite Matori girl with a rather hefty staff hoisted in the air, a snarl on her pretty face, poised to strike him. His arms instinctively moved to cover his face, scrunching his eyes closed to prepare for the impact. But when it never came, he tentatively lowered his fists to his chest, peaking out of one eye. Leukos blinked in confusion; the weak moonlight must have been playing tricks on his eyes, she looked like a pale ghost! Have I angered the gods? Did they send a specter to finally end me? He found himself speechless, embarrassed to think that his final act before he parted this world was running away from a threat and making a sopping wet mess of himself. Well... at least if he had to go out, it would be at the hands of a pretty spirit. He lifted his palms to show he meant no threat. "Is there any way I can ask for forgiveness before you smite me? I'd prefer if it was at your own hands, not your demon's jaws, if I may?"

Smite? Why was he asking her such a strange question? Oh, oooh. Her flush lingering Arima offered a sheepish smile towards the stranger, "You don't need to do that as I'm not smiting anyone." She tucked her staff back into the strap hanging by her side, "I honestly didn't realize you were here so no worries. I was just startled by something strange..." Arima twisted a stray strand of hair in her fingers, "I'm sorry for startling you so." Seriously, she was truly getting some great first impressions with everyone that she had met as of late. At this rate she would be more surprised to just have a simple, normal meeting for once.

I suppose life just doesn't want me to have it easy.

As if in response to the thought that low humming noise once more caught Arima's attention, "Oh, watch out!" Moving forward the Matori girl jumped towards the stranger pushing him slightly backwards as the insect darted through the air around them again.Thankfully the splash seemed to deter it before it circled away once more, "That is the reason...I had my staff out." Managed Arima as she leaned against the other. Of course the realization that she was so close to someone else made the girl take a hasty step back, splashing water as she went.

"You uh...wouldn't happen to know exactly what that thing is, would you?"

Leukos couldn't help but smile to himself when he saw the lavender flush on her cute cheeks. What a charming spirit. But that smile was soon swept away by his mortification as he came to a realization. This was no ethereal creature from another world. It was a living, breathing girl who happened to be paler than any Matori he had ever seen before... And he had implied she was an angry ghost. Oh Gods I'm such an a**! His own face flushed bright purple and he nervously pushed back his bangs, "Oh my gosh I am so sorry. I didn't mean to offend... to imply that you're, you know... I'm mortified by my own ignorance! You have nothing to apologize for, I got in your way..." He straightened out and smiled apologetically.

Suddenly they were interrupted by the humming sound of the beastly creature again, when Leukos found himself suddenly pushed backwards by the girl as it flew too close for comfort. His arms instinctualy wrapped around her to shield her from the attacks, pressing her close to his chest. As the insect retreated once more into the gloom of the long grass, he was left alone with a strange girl in his arms. He quickly released her and managed an apology, "Please excuse my presumptuousness, I only meant to shield you from it..." He straightened out his shirt and made his way back to shore, starting to squeeze out the water from his trousers, looking back at the girl as she spoke.

"Regrettably I do not. I have had the good fortune to never run into any insect that large in my life, and I've traveled all across Oba. I had thought it might have been with you, but obviously I was mistaken." He pressed his hand to his chest and bowed slightly, "I'm Leukos by the way. I don't think I ever said that in all the excitement... which again I am so sorry for."

Arima's flush deepened as the boy's apologies flustered her, "Oh, no! You're okay I think we both were just startled..." She gave a small laugh, "After all out here in the dark it's not hard to get confused easily." Which was true with the sun setting and the strange flying thing constantly trying to get in her face the girl truly was feeling a bit overwhelmed. And now that he was apologizing she felt even more confused! What was going on out here? This is the last time I go on an errand for you this late at night, master. She thought with a soft sigh.

Caught in the other's arms Arima found herself speechless. Even when she had space from him again it took a few moments for the burning sensation in her ears and the pounding of her heart to calm down. Despite her recent encounters with patients and others this...this was the first time she'd been so close to a stranger! Let alone a handsome one like that...shaking her head Arima held out a hand in protest, "Please you don't have to apologize so. I appreciate you guarding me."

"A pleasure to meet you, I'm Arima." She bowed her own head in turn. It was so rare to find someone with such manners out here! She had gotten so used to rough characters from her time in the streets mingling with the lower classes that it was rather...refreshing? If not a bit baffling considering how he continued to fluster her - or perhaps it was just the giant insect that continued to buzz around them in a circle.

"I think the one that needs to apologize is the one buzzing right now." Replied Arima with a soft laugh, "The question is can we fight it off or should we just run and hope that we don't fall on our faces in the dark?" Though her hand did reach out and tighten around her magic staff. Perhaps it was a good idea to think about using some defensive spell...though healing the enemy would probably not solve the issue. The girl flushed. She truly needed to practice some other types of magic for situations like this!

Having squeezed out as much water from his pants as he could, Leukos straightened out again and glanced nervously at the sky. He was usually opposed to harming any wild beasts unless his survival depended on it, but truth be told, he felt no fondness for bugs of any shape or size. The sight of the huge beast that hummed over their heads made his toes go numb, quickly putting his usual morals on the back-burner. And really, he had no way of fighting it off, possessing no militant training whatsoever. But he had already made as a** of himself once today in front of a pretty girl, he wasn't going to risk falling flat on his face while he ran away like a coward. So he shoved his fear deep into his stomach and put on a brave face, smiling easily at the girl.

"Well Miss Arima, I don't know about you, but I think we need to teach this monster a lesson for pestering us so mercilessly tonight." He bent down and picked up one of his forgotten boots, feeling the comforting heft in his hand. "Luckily for us I'm one of the best shots in the circus, I should be able to take it out easily! Just stay behind me...I don't want to nail you in the face by accident!" He entered a ready stance, eyes trailing on the insect as it hovered, trying to keep the squeamish look off his face as his eyes made contact with its bulbous twitching orbs. As the creature flew straight at them again, he waited until the best moment and hurled his shoe at it.

It was a good shot, the boot smacking right into the left wing of the insect. Unfortunately for Leukos, this merely shocked the poor beast and changed its flight pattern, turning its well planned out swoop into a nose dive, right into Leukos' chest. He went down in a flailing mass of arms and legs, swearing loudly in a most ungentlemanly manner as he struggled in the sand to keep its thrashing, snapping mandibles away from his face.

"You believe so?" Arima's gaze was hesitant before the buzzing made her quickly nod. If not for just pestering them then just so the thing would go away finally! His next statement had her gazing over towards him in surprise. Best shot...in the circus? Her mother had mentioned such events, but the girl was honestly surprised to be interacting with someone from one. Perhaps if they weren't struggling against some strange creature she would have asked him more about his profession and how fun it seemed.

As the boot made contact, Arima raised her hands to cover her mouth. Surely that had hurt! Right? But the next thing the Matori knew the bug was flying straight after the boy, "Oh!" Gasping, a bit of shock and some humor, Arima darted forward. What if it had venom? Or even those wings could have a poison powder...That definitely was not okay!

She had to do something! "Close your eyes!" Arima called out before finally reaching for her magic staff. Even if she wasn't an attack mage there were a few things she still could do! I just pray this works... Closing her own eyes the girl slashed her staff through the air and with that a huge, blinding light filled the air startling the beast and causing it to flutter -if not fall completely- backwards. Opening her own eyes, Arima sighed with relief to see that there was some relief before reaching out a hand to the other Matori, "Is this when we run?" She teased lightly, but her own heart was racing. What if the stun didn't last long?

Leukos was so focused on keeping the damned thing away from his face that he barely even heard Arima yell, closing his eyes just in time to have his eyelids lit bright red from an explosion of light. What the hell?! But just as suddenly as it came, the brightness vanished. He felt the insect go limp on him, a thick weight pressing against his chest. Tentatively he opened his eyes, looking up to see Arima with a hand reached out to him. He gratefully took it, brushing himself off, a bit abashed. "What in the world did you do to it?" He prodded it with his foot; it didn't look dead. But the moment passed and he slapped both hands against his face, knocking the sense back into him. The thrill of the encounter still clung to his nerves, and he couldn't help but bark out a laugh at how his heart was racing."I suppose it doesn't matter anyways, I think we've earned an honorable retreat!" He scooped up his shoes and took her hand, running into the long grass to put as much distance between them and the strange insect as possible, an ecstatic grin on his face the whole way.

Arima's face was flushed with effort as she helped Leukos, "Honestly...I don't even know." She smiled sheepishly, "I know how to make mage lights and I figured that maybe something startling would get it off of you." So she had perhaps added a bit of extra 'umph' to the typical spell. I truly hope that wasn't overkill. She glanced towards the creature with a slight frown before her hand was grabbed.

Oh! The girl found her legs flying beneath her as she followed the other Matori through the long grass and away from the creature. Eventually when they would stop she would bend over to catch her breathe before breaking out into laughter. That...that was the most fun she had in a while! Surprised at her own reaction the girl raised a hand to cover her mouth, "So-sorry...it's just...that was a bit exhilarating." Her gaze peeked at him from over her fingertips as she glanced behind him, "Do...do you think it followed?"

Leukos put his hands on his hips and laughed heartily; he wasn't winded at all, that run was nothing compared to the workouts he was used to. "It was wasn't it? I thought my heart was going to stop when it landed on me! But you did beautifully, great quick thinking!" He turned to look in the direction they came, squinting into the gloom. "I don't see it at all. It's pride is probably still wounded from that startling you gave it!"

He got up onto a rock to brush off his feet and put his shoes back on: nothing worse than sand in your boots. When he was done, he hopped off and strode over to Arima, taking her hand and quickly kissing it. "Thanks for the lovely assist tonight Miss Arima; I should think all of my future adventures would go much smoother if I had someone like you around to get me out of any pickle I find myself in. You've got brains and beauty... It's certainly been an eventful evening!" He let go of her hand and smiled, comfortable now that they weren't being bothered anymore. "You should come visit the circus sometime, we'll be in town until the end of the week. My act is around the middle, but I'd love to give you a private tour afterwards!"

Arima's cheeks flushed, "I just did it on a whim, but I'm thankful it worked out." She smiled towards the other Matori with amusement, "Just glad I could help save you from such a treacherous creature." It was a slight tease - now that they were away from the thing she felt more at ease to joke about it....just a little at least. Pride or its poor eyes - she truly hoped that it would be flying again soon...just not to torment her any longer at least. Where had the creature even come from? Not even all of the books I've read can truly prepare me for this world I suppose. She thought with a small frown.

However, her thoughts quickly halted at the sudden action from Leukos, "O-oh. I uh....oh." Her voice trailed off as she blinked at the boy with shyness. Brains and beauty? He....found her beautiful? Shaking her head the Matori quickly brushed away the thought, "I'm sure there's plenty of others who can do the same - it was just a simple light spell after all." She teased quietly, "Though it was fun to have such an 'adventure' with you."

"Re-really?" She beamed up towards him, "I would love that!" It may take a bit of coxing from her mentor, but Arima truly was up to seeing the act and having a private tour. After reading and hearing about such things she could finally actually just go and see them! Now that was truly exciting - something that obviously showed in her eager expression as she leaned towards Leukos, "If my mentor allows me then I shall definitely try to stop by." She nodded with an attempt at lady like grace though her heart was still pounding in her chest. What an exciting night this had been!
