There were three of them, right beyond the threshold of her own home. They scuttled about, communicating with each other in their basic language and finding interest in things in the dirt. Goddess Aisha, they were ugly. Akacia glowered at them from her doorway, arms crossed, posture slumped, eyes narrowed. She hadn't been especially fond of insects when she lived on Chibale, and she wasn't especially fond of them now.
Especially with their strange muddy-grey skin, worm-colored limbs, and bug-gut green eyes. De-sgusting. And if they were going to play in front of her home, the least they could do was be silent and unobtrusive about it.
Hm, the maglardilla?
Oh, no, no! She didn't care one way or another how close food came to her house! It was the Elaria children she took issue with, a much nastier and less pleasant type of bug. Though the girls that Aka currently took issue with had managed to find a bug of their own and were prodding at it curiously. Admittedly, curiosity from the children was likely better than fear. Most probably had never seen one before, and the creatures were completely and utterly harmless.
But they didn't need to know that. Aka stepped from her doorway and strode over to the youngsters. "I wouldn't poke it like that, if I were you," she informed the group. "They spit poison when agitated."

Zayana was running, something she took after her mothers for. Although she wanted to pursue path like Zandala, she always would run thanks to Lumikani. Now that she was older, and permitted to wander about the camp unattended, Zayana was taking long moments to explore and evaluate her sisterhood. It was easy to grow attached to her kin, the Elaria were something she bonded with no matter which one she found. It was the other Alkidikes that concerned her.
Maybe it was the warnings from her mother, about their intentions to sway her to an agenda that might not be in the best interest of their tribe. Now that she was older, Zayana wasn't foolish. She saw how her mother was judged for her opinions, and understood in a way why such things were happening. The sisterhood on this island made a sacrifice, and most of the elders expected everyone to be unyeilding in their ways. Sometimes Zayana believed that her mother just wasn't as 'extreme' as everyone else, and that worried her.
As Zayana ran around the corner, she slowed upon sight of younger Elaria and a lone Alkidike. She neared enough to hear the statement, but only flashed her eyes in confusion. It wasn't true, was it? Zayana wasn't too keen on the ways of the old island, but she thought that sisters ate these bugs.
Pursing her lips and sniffing once, she looked at the group of Elaria then back at the elder Alkidike.

The moment the statement left Akacia's lips, the nearest girl's hand whipped away from the maglardilla, curling back to her chest while she shot the strange new specimen a briefly startled look. Another of the bunch looked more skeptical, but also chose to keep her limbs away. When the creature scuttled to escape them, the children shrank away from it.
Aka snorted softly and crossed her arms, feeling some combination of amusement, disappointment, and disgust. The youngster who'd been closest also seemed to be the youngest, and she regained herself before the creature managed to escape. She stuck a stick out in front of it and carefully prodded it back toward the circle of girls. She sent Akacia a pinched glare. "Do it really?" The Elaria child demanded. It hadn't yet, and they'd been jabbing at it for quite a few minutes. "What kind of poison?"
And anything this Alkidike in particular said probably wasn't worth trusting. All the kids in this part of camp knew better than to believe anything Akacia said. Or so their guardians claimed.
Akacia moved closer, close enough to toe the maglardilla onto its back. It really was quite battered... Parts of its body already crushed beneath Elaria curiosity. "The burning kind," Aka answered. "That makes your skin peel right to the bone-"
It was then that Akacia took notice of another girl, older than this bunch, but still an Elaria. Still wildly unwanted in front of her home. Akacia raised a brow. "Do you have something to add?" She asked the newcomer.

Zayana was silent as the girls worked out the truth and the lies, silently proud of her sisters for making their own opinions around another Alkidike. She trusted her mothers, but knew other cousins were a bit of a different sort. Some were passionate, some were deranged, and some were a threat to Elzira because of how extreme they were. This one just seemed keen on causing a fuss, and maybe a scare from the younger ones.
As she was noticed, Zayana tilted her head slightly and ignored the startled looks (as well as the relief) from the young girls who realized she was there. She was no nanny, and even her sisters needed to learn on their own. So when Akacia asked if she had anything to add, Zayana merely let out a snort.
"If they can't figure out threats on their own, they should be training instead of poking bugs." She simply responded, her voice neutral as she crossed her arms and looked meaningfully at the younglings. Learn by doing, not by seeing.

The maglardilla looked quite distraught and certainly seemed to be scuttling as far away as the children would allow before being reigned back in by many tiny, impatient fingers. Akacia tutted quietly and shook her head as she stared at the creature. What a waste of food. broken, battered, and with too many grubby fingerprints on it to be any good. Aka looked away from it and its child captors.
The day was apparently to be fraught with unenjoyable things, as the older Elaria female, who'd taken the time to watch and do little else, finally spoke up. Akacia quirked an unimpressed brow at her. Oh, this girl thought she was one to preach, did she? She took a step toward the younger woman. "What's your excuse, then?" Akacia hummed softly, posture straight to bring her to her full height and arms folded neatly behind her back. "You don't seem to be serving much use, yourself. Meandering about camp with seemingly very little purpose in mind..."
"I'd hardly believe you have done much training today, and if you think you have, then perhaps it's time for a more strict regimen. I'd suggest you take one of these girls-" The whole bunch of them rapidly swiveled their attention toward Akacia and then the other Elaria and looked between them with all the grace of a flock of brainless birds. "-so that the pair of you may improve together."

Zayana smirked back, her eyes flashing again as the Alkidike spoke up. She wasn't afraid of such interaction, in fact she welcomed a conversation because it meant she could show herself as who she was. She was one of the first Elaria born outside of the main three, raised by two strong monthers and aware of both the old and the new ways. She was part of Elzira, and honored Aisha. She was a true born and would help lead her sisterhood when the Alkidike sisters eventually died off.
But she appreciated this girl not bowing at her feet, it was actually something that brought her comfort, because Akacia was being honest. She wasn't trying to manipulate her, but simply showing who she was, and Zayana felt at ease for such a discussion.
And so, she laughed.
It was short, a bark of a laugh, but it still was loud and hearty.
"Cousin, you are not one to talk," She replied with a shrug, "I just finished my morning run, but where have you come from? Did you just wake up and decided to go for a morning stroll, stumbling on these sisters so you could impose your will? Maybe it is you who should join me, so I can remind you how training really works?"
Her voice was smooth, slightly goading, and clearly showing she saw no need to bow down at the older sister's feet and seek praise. This behavior was a direct lesson from her mothers, that the only person who deserved her immediate respect was Elzira; the rest had to earn it.

There was no power on this earth, new or old, that could make Akacia think she needed to explain herself to a little girl that had no experience with anything outside of this camp. As far as she could tell, all Elaria children were cocky, conceited, spoiled, and stupid. They had no sense of the hardships that had occurred to bring them here (other than what they'd been told - but a retelling of a story long past that involved people who likely meant nothing to them wasn't the same as feeling it), and no concept of what struggle was.
They all thought they were strong, like this girl, and deserving of respect for being what so many of their elders told them they were: better, perfect, new, and a force for change in this world.
But they weren't. Akacia had seen no evidence of it.
"I wouldn't waste my time with you, girl, and I've already given you more than you deserve. Bother your sisters and your elders. I'm sure they will give you great, exorbitant amounts of praise for completing your run."
