Mnyiri yawned, and wiped at her eyes with the back of her hands. In a few days time she would be leaving for Yael so the young warrior had been trying to get as much sleep as she could before the trip, but a scream had drug her from her dreams sooner than expected.
A pair of young girls, teenagers (a romantic pair, Mnyiri guessed, by the hickies on their necks) had stumbled across a strange creature on their little secret 'excursion'. The girls claimed it's markings were dark, cursed even.
Mnyiri wasn't so sure about that last part, but she did know that her curiosity wouldn't let her sleep until she had answers.
So when volunteers had been asked to track it down Mnyiri had put her name in the mix. Might as well see what all the fuss was and if it really was a haunting then...well, she would figure that out once she got there.

Dyakida had been out taking a walk with her sprite. Peyla was a suitable enough escort when she was only in the settlement, and walking through the humid air with it's bright scents and sounds was the perfect thing to clear her head. Things had been complicated as of late, sure, but simply in general one sometimes needed to just take a walk. After all, just sitting at a workbench all day made one weak. And antsy. It was a pleasant, quiet walk... until Peyla shrieked loudly just near her ear. "Ow!" Dyakida exclaimed, putting her hand to it as the sound rang in her ears for a few seconds more. "Peyla, what...?" Peyla chittered an abrupt answer, unintelligable as sprites were, and Dyakida heard the flutter of her wings drawing away. "Peyla, where are you going? Peyla?" Dyakida tried to follow, but she was sure that she would have lost track of the fast moving sprite even if she could see her. Peyla zipped by Mnyiri, not even taking the time to coo a greeting to the pretty-haired hybrid before chasing... something. Dyakida followed the sound a ways, but stopped before she could run into anything. She tried to regain her bearings, resting her hand on a wall - still in the town, of course, so that was good. She used the wooden wall as a guide, walking around it. She 'listened' with her antennae for any movement that might be someone. Theoretically, she would find someone to help her back if she hung around. If not, she was at least still safe...

Mnyiri had been mid-step when the frenzied sprite flew past her. She yelped, and pulled herself to a stop, eyes darting after the shape only to find it had already disappeared. If she didn't know better she might have thought that was the haunted creature but those colors..."Peyla?"
Maybe it was her or...? Mnyiri was fresh from sleep after all, and she could have been mistaken...On impulse she started to run after it, only to catch herself mid stride and turn the opposite direction. Of course she wanted to know what the sprite was chasing, but if it really was Peyla and she was by herself then that must mean that her mistress was also by herself.
And sure enough, Mnyiri's long stride carried her straight to the alkidike in question. "Dyakida! What are you doing out so late?" The bouncy hybrid came to a stop next to the other, and gently reached out to take her hand. "Are you chasing rumors too?"

"Mnyiri!" Ah, good! A friendly voice to guide her. "Good..." Late. Was it really so late? "Evening? I thought it was earlier. I was just out taking a walk... have you seen my sprite? She just took off out of nowhere." Dyakida hoped she was safe, though the sprite was cunning and wild enough to manage on her own. "What are you up to?" she asked, taking Mnyiri's hand gratefully, "What rumors are you chasing?"

"I did! She flew past me so fast I thought she was the wind itself." Though now that she thought about it, what if Peyla was chasing the same thing that Mnyiri herself was after?
"Oh, you haven't heard? Strange creatures have been spotted in the area. Haunted creatures. Demonic, evil things from distant lands..." As she spoke she added some dramatic flare to her voice, making it as spooky as possible before cheerfully adding, "...and I thought I'd hunt them down. I want to know what kind of things they are, you know? And maybe Peyla went after them as well."

"I actually... hadn't." Dyakida said, faltering slightly. She'd been inside working a lot, hence the walk, and the conversations she'd been in on had happened to never land on the subject of strange beasts. Strange, haunted, demonic beasts. Somehow, even though they weren't that well acquainted, Dyakida was not surprised that Mnyiri was hunting such creatures. "Perfectly understandable." Dyakida said, with just a hint of sarcasm. Perhaps, she had to admit to herself, she would have been inclined to do the same. It also sounded like exactly the sort of thing that the sprite would do. And that wasn't a good thing - they were after all Demonic, Evil, Haunted things, and her sprite was merely... a sprite. "Did you see where she was headed? She often flies in a straight line when she has a goal in mind." Barring trees, of course.

"Oh...well, now you have." What started out as a rather awkward 'oh' ended rather chipper. "I mean, it sounds rather strange, doesn't it? Creatures that no one has seen before. Surely someone has seen them and they aren't so terrifying, but no one wants to admit it. It just sounds so much more exotic if they don't.
Mnyiri gently nudged Dyakida in the direction she'd seen the sprite take off, walking that way herself, of course. As if she was going to miss whatever Peyla had managed to round up. "She went this way; I hope she found it. In a completely safe way, mind you, I wouldn't wish her harm." That last bit was tacked on hurriedly. Mnyiri needed to seeeeeeee the beast, but she wouldn't hurt the little sprite or endanger her just to do so.
As they walked Mnyiri thought she could hear...noises. Strange ones.

"I feel like surely someone, somewhere knows what they are. Just not the ones here... but I agree. It is more exotic that way." It also sounded a lot like upselling, something she herself partook in on occasion. Who wouldn't want to make something slightly above ordinary seem extraordinary? And if that was not what this was, and these were eerie monsters of some sort... "Of course." she said, smirking at Mnyiri's tone as she was led in that direction. She was hoping they found Peyla first. As they walked, Dyakida sensed the world around her as she always did - through her antennae, ears, and fingers. Mnyiri's hand was warm and tantalizingly rough, a warrior with the callouses of the spear. It had a surprising softness to it, the callouses trained to flexibility. The air around her was still, silenced by the jungle, and the invisible vibrations of the leaves and branches and the creatures that lived in them were mostly muted so close to the settlement. And then there were the sounds, the ever present, living sounds of Jauhar that made the stalls of the Oban Tournament wool-in-ears dull by comparison. She knew the sounds of the jungle well. Except for that one - that high-pitched, petulant wailing. "That is an... unusual sound." she said, trying to pinpoint it, "Did the rumors actually say what the sounds were like?" A splintering sound, like crystal on crystal and crystal on wood, a sound she was very familiar with, though not as violent and sharp in her own hands.

"Nope." Mnyiri craned her head to see through the darkness, relying on the glow from Jauhar's fungi to illuminate something. What she saw was a flicker of a crystal tipped tail, slipping behind another bush, and the sight had Mnyiri crying out, "There! There, I saw something!"
It seemed vaguely familiar, but Mnyiri couldn't place it; not in a situation like this. She tugged Kida towards it, perhaps a little too roughly in her excitement.

"What? What did you see?" Dyakida asked anxiously. It was increasingly important for her to know, since she was apparently stumbling towards it. Is it Peyla? she wanted to ask, but she knew the sound of Peyla's wings well enough to know that something else was out there. Another sound - not wings. A hiss, and then a scampering sound- again, crystal on wood. Scrabbling - crystal on crystal. Is it a monster? Dyakida wondered. How big was this beast? "I think it's climbing...!" she exclaimed, as if that would help. It was the likeliest reason to scrabble, and it would mean... Oh dear... It would be above them, whatever it was. That was, according to Dyakida's strategic instincts, not a good thing.

"A tail! I saw a tail with a crystal at the end- I know what it is!" Mnyiri laughed, feeling more excited and less nervous by the second. "It's a perzi, it has to be! Those little hairless things from Oba; the ones that purr when you pet them. Though why one would be this far out into Jauhar I have no ide-!"
Mnyiri came up short when she finally saw the scene before her. The little perzi was climbing up a tree as best it could, tail flicking back and forth in a predatory way, as it tried to get in a better spot. Apparently they weren't the only ones chasing after Peyla! While she couldn't see the sprite she assumed it was around, just by watching the perzi whip it's head around.
"Okay, yeah, definitely a perzi. A weird one, though; it's got some really dark markings, so maybe that's what everyone was panicking over?" It almost looked demonic in a way, but Mnyiri thought that, up close, it was kind of cute.

"A perzi?" Dyakida had heard of such things, but she'd never met one up close. "P... perhaps." Dark coats and Oban animals where they weren't supposed to be.... hmm, what did that remind her of? Weren't the Obans also dark of skin, or so she'd heard. Unusual animals in unusual places in unusual colors, even as pets, could stir up everybody's fears. Crystals, though... Hmm. Didn't they have very sharp, barb-like crystals? She'd heard that they were fairly good quality, and their hide... No time to think about crafting materials, though - a frantic chime from above them reached her sensitive ears. "Peyla!" she called out. She heard loud, angry sounds, and the tink of wood on crystal - a sound she knew well. "Peyla, come here!" An answering chime. From her aggressive flight around the Perzi's face with a poke-stick, Peyla decided that her chase - against the Perzi, of course - needed to be interrupted by making sure her mistress was ok. She dashed over, gleaming eyes -- and claws -- following in the darkness.

"Oh Peyla, I'm glad you're alright." Mnyiri wasn't surprised to see the sprite in a more aggressive stance; it was better than seeing it hidden in a hole, fearfully hiding from the perzi. At least this way she knew she was safe.
The perzi swiped at the little one before she flew away, but before she could get to close Mnyiri broke away from Dyakida and snatched it's hindleg with her hand. It was enough to surprise the beast into a loud, angry yowl. Mnyiri had been hoping for that; in it's surprise it loosened it's grip on the tree and she was able to pick it up, wrapping it up tightly in her arms. Unfortunately, she hadn't accounted for the claws and the creatures natural anger.
"OW! Stop biting me, I'm just trying to help!" She tried gathering up it's legs to pin it, but the perzi answered her attempts by biting her fingers. She hissed, it hissed back, and eventually Mnyiri gave up, letting it go with a curse. The creature landed on all fours, snarling up at all three of them before taking off into the jungle.
"I think...I think I'm ready to call it quits for the night, you know? That thing doesn't want to be caught. I'm bleeding, it's mad; I say we go back now that we've got Peyla." She was covered in enough scratches to make it seemed as if Mnyiri had gotten in a fight with a barbed bush. .
