strange things
Everything was going fine until Thorne went to disneyland without permission.

Chris had, with reasonable assumption, trusted Thorne when he turned the car over to him and went to sleep. They hadn't exactly picked a destination yet, too caught up in what the day's adventure had brought them, but Chris figured Thorne would pick a hotel or something. A nice, quiet town for Chris to change over in when he woke him up. It was that assumption that led Chris to sleep, curled up on his side in the back of the car with the blankets Thorne over him and a pillow that he'd gotten from a goodwill they had passed by forever ago. Didn't make him think he'd wake up to something crazy.

He was, apparently, incredibly wrong.

Thorne had left Chris in the car.

After all, he was almost positive a Disneyland parking lot wasn't a place where many people decided to carry out muggings, and he wanted to surprise Chris. More than that, he really, really wanted to get Chris into one of those Mickey Mouse ears.

When he appeared back at the car as Chris was waking up, he rapped twice on the window and said, "Hey, I brought you breakfast."

This wasn't really a surprise or anything out of the normal. Thorne often woke up to grab them breakfast from the hotel or order room service, or find a starbucks. Today was no different.

Alright.

Today was a little different.

Today, he was definitely wearing Mickey Mouse ears, and today, Disneyland was definitely in the backdrop, just waiting on the inevitable outcome of them going in.

Chris jerked at the wake up, still not used to it after all these days of sleeping in the car and being woken by Thorne. He blinked up blearily, blankets sliding off of him as he opened the door to let Thorne deliver sweet, sweet food to him.

"Thank you," He said gratefully, looking up at Thorne as he took the food and - wait.

Were those mouse ears on his head?

He peered behind Thorne, the visage of Disneyland definitely in the background. The look down at the food in his hand, definitely Disney themed.

He wondered for a very long second if he was hallucinating.

"Thorne," He said carefully, "Please do not tell me we're at Disneyland."

"You're welcome," Thorne replied, grinning at Chris. He was in a casual tank top, the sides slit down to his waist, the dark jeans faded at the end into beaten down Toms. He looked a little bit like a street fashion model that had ransacked a Disneyland store - after all, the Disney Castle was imprinted in black on the tanktop, and he was already sporting the telltale ears.

"Alright," Thorne said, offering Chris his hand. "We're not at Disneyland, and we don't have tickets, and I haven't already obligated you to go on the Haunted Mansion ride with me. Does that sound alright?"

He smiled, wicked and warm, happy and whole and wanting.

"And," he added, "we're definitely not going to get those wedding mickey mouse ears for Alg and Jer, yeah?"

Chris isn't even sure how Thorne is already dressed in Disney gear, much less already torn it up to his level of street wear but he isn't about to ask. He opens the bag, finds himself a mickey waffles, and yanks it out to nibble on one of the ears as he tries to figure out where his life went so wrong.

Decides it begins with meeting Thorne in the first place.

He stares up at Thorne and stuffs the entire waffles in his mouth, shrugs off the last of his blankets and starts digging for a pair of shoes. Thorne may have been an a*****e who drove to Disneyland but he wasn't going to turn this down. "It sounds alright as long as you don't have some ears for me or at least don't have a shirt because I'm not walking into this not Disneyland without looking like I at least wanted to be here," He grumbles.

It's hard to look actually mad in the wake of Thorne's smile and he gives him a reluctant one back.

"Yeah, we're totally not getting those for them," He replies, shy almost.

Thorne laughs as Chris accepts the food offering and leans back, sipping on a coffee he'd managed to find somewhere inside. He's enjoying this way more than he should. Absolutely 100% more than he should.

His expression bubbles even wider when Chris responds to him, and he offers Chris a pair of matching Mickey Mouse ears, sliding them over his head with gentle, teasing ease. Together, they look ridiculously sappy, too idiots in love that don't even know they're in love.

"You're right," Thorne says, throwing Chris a matching tank top, "You definitely have to look like you 100% do not want to be here at all, which is exactly why I got you this. No take-backs, either. Try to look grumpy the entire time, especially at the top of Splash Mountain."

He pauses and laughs again, jubilant.

"Come on," he says, coaxing, a question, "We've been driving through nowhere land for so long. Let's have some fun. I'll sing Beauty and the Beast and you can pretend to hate me the entire time if you want."

Chris finds his shoes and sits back, eyes Thorne's coffee with a moment of deep consideration. Finally, after a minute, he makes a grabby motion with his hand. "Share please?" He asks, but it's less of a question and more of a very politely worded command.

There is a very, very excited noise that comes out of Chris' mouth when the ears slide on his head. They match Thorne's and Chris is way too pleased, forgets for a second to be grumpy as he catches the tank top.

"Yesss," He hisses, then pauses for a moment. "Wait, I mean no. Nooo."

He's clearly losing this battle and he pulls off the ears, shrugging out of his shirt without any hesitation before quickly pulling on the tank top.

"I'm going to be mad at you for the entire time since you didn't say anything," Chris says, "But I kind of don't hate you since I have wanted to go to Disney for a long time. The only think I'll hate is your ridiculously good voice, I can't even sing along to the shitty radio songs we have now because you sound too good."

Thorne laughs. "Of course, of course," he says and gives the drink over once Chris is dressed, his eyes flicking over the other with a hungry, pleased expression once he is properly Disney-ed up.

He crosses his arms and leans back as the heat scratches at him, beading at the nape of his neck. But even now he cannot help his laughter, his pleasure, his sheer joy at the fact that they are at Disneyland of all places. He feels removed, buoyant, because it is only Chris and him - and what trouble couldn't they get into here?

"I had to keep some of this trip a surprise," Thorne remarked, a sly smile turning on his face. "I'm glad I got to be the one to bring you, then. I've wanted to see you in Mickey Mouse ears ever since Virginia."

He'd put on Beauty and the Beast in their hotel room after browsing the channels for a solid hour. He'd even managed to sing every song to Chris between getting hit by pillows and other body parts, his laughter infectious the whole night through.

"Oh come on," Thorne retorts, grinning ear to ear, "my voice isn't even that good. How many miles more until I finally get you to do a duet with me?" He takes both of Chris's hands though and pulls him out of the car, towards the entrance, kicking the door closed and locking everything before he gives in to this entire escapade.

He even sings Chris a short little snippet from Aladdin as he goes and draws a few eyes to them, but pays no attention to anyone but Chris.

"Yess," Chris mumbles, taking the coffee cup and wrapping his hands around it. He inhales, a moment of pure bliss, before he finally takes a long sip. Everything is perfect.

Well, except for the weather. He was freezing back in Ashdown but California was hot, apparently going through some heatwave. Even in the morning it's weird, a whiplash of temperature. But Chris is summer through and through and so he takes it happily, much over the freezer they'd be returning back to once they were finished with the trip. The thought makes him a little sad.

"Virginia?" Chris says around the coffee, eyebrows raising into his hair. "You could've just taken me to the one in Florida, instead of all the way here in California. That's some dedication to the surprise."

He should've seen it coming through, once Thorne had sung Beauty and the Beast. That had been a good night, even if Thorne had somehow managed to sing through his attacks. Thorne was annoying, but Chris still loved him anyways.

"Isn't that good?" Chris splutters, outraged. "Have you even listened to yourself? You sound amazing, like something out of a dream. I bet if I put you on youtube, the video would go viral in a matter of hours." He's pulled along by Thorne easily though, empty coffee cup abandoned in favor of Thorne's hands. Once they're moving he frees one from Thorne's grasp though, gives him a soft smile.

Maybe, reluctantly, even sings a bit of the song back to Thorne as quietly as he can.

Thorne laughs at Chris, warm and full of mirth. He can still feel that creature of love and devotion and want burning inside of him, its body turning as it slept, but today was a day to be happy. Today was a day where he could let it continue to sleep, and pretend without thinking too much on it.

"What, and miss out on the classic?" Thorne retorts. "I wanted it to be a grand reveal, but then you fell asleep. I've got us hotel rooms for the night too, so don't worry, you won't have to sleep twice in the car." There was a another round of laughter that promises this as a joke, and with one free arm now, he hums at Chris softly, fondly. "I'm always dedicated to you."

He pauses and blinks, surprised, a startled noise in the base of his throat.

"I'm - " he starts, flushes, starts again, "I think you are a biased creature, to flatter me so. But I wouldn't mind singing for you, if it made you watch me." He laughs and somehow they manage to stumble back into Disneyland proper, the Halloween decorations glowing all around them along the cobblestone streets.

He cannot help but grin though as Chris sings back to him, quietly. It's early enough that only the really dedicated people are out at the park, and Thorne wonders if they should have grabbed a map, though he'd selfishly gone for the ears before all else.

Leaning in, he presses his head against Chris's neck and collarbone, a laugh bubbling in his throat, helpless.

"Will you sing louder for me if I ever get you alone?" He asks, cannot help asking, because he is selfish and silly and it's Disneyland.

For a day, maybe some of their dreams can come true.

"I fell asleep?" Chris splutters, clearly put out, "You let me sleep! I turned the car over to you with the point of sleeping and you driving to our next destination!!" He gives Thorne a bit of an angry stare but it melts away easily and he leans into Thorne. "Thank you," He says, soft and pleased and very, very happy. "I'll- I'm dedicated to you too. If you want me to be."

The creature in him that wants burns for a second, stirs, but it doesn't move. He has always been dedicated to Thorne, will be dedicated even as everything burns out because that is what he can do if he can't get what he wants. He can let it lie, he can not think about it for now and just focus on this moment with Thorne. Focus on the gift he has been given explicitly for him, because Thorne wanted to see him happy.

His cheeks flush a little at the thought.

"You're biased when it comes to me too," Chris points out immediately, but he doesn't fight it. He is most definitely biased when it comes to Thorne. "I'm always watching you anyways, you don't have to sing for that." He stumbles in with Thorne, clinging to his hand like it is a lifeline. This is a dream come true, both Disney and the fact it has Halloween decorations. The park almost empty at the time of day, not bound to get many since it was the middle of a week as well. Thorne had picked an excellent day.

"Maybe," Chris grumbles back, but it sounds like a yes because Chris is weak and he knows Thorne will cajole him into it anyways through bribery of some type. He doesn't find himself minding it though and is actually slightly looking forward to it.

He brings a free hand up to run it through Thorne's hair, languish in the attention on him, the skin on his. "Come on, where to first?"

Thorne only laughs at Chris, his grin wild and dedicated to the cause. He is positively alight here, mischievous and airy. The tension that runs like a current, an undertow through him in Ashdown is all but forgotten, a ghost at best and a wisp of remembrance otherwise. Here he is simply - young. In mickey mouse ears and a tank top sparkling with the Disney castle logo, he attracts attention like a goddamn sun. But not for the scars. Not for the tattoos.

"Anything for you," Thorne responds, happily, nuzzling Chris cheekily with a laugh, "I could ask for nothing more in this entire world." He felt the sleepy turnings of want inside of him, a beast crawling through his skin, singing every song that spoke of love. But today he would that beast prowl and wander. He wouldn't touch it, wouldn't acknowledge it though. He was here to be Chris's friend, maybe a thief in the night, maybe a ruffian or a thug or whatever Disney trope was made for people like him.

"Oh, entirely," Thorne drawls in return, snorting, his expression turning into a devious grin to match. "That was nothing secret though. Someone would be blind not to see it." His eyes light at the next words out of Chris's mouth though, and he cannot help a soft flush of red against the edges of his ears, the corner of his eyes. "Is that so?" he asks, and laughs.

The park around them is quiet and beautiful, and Thorne doesn't mind it at all. He loves the festive decorations, the giant jack-o-lanterns and the glow of orange and black. Everything is decked out for fall, for Halloween, and Thorne thinks that it will be just as fun to celebrate the actual holiday in Ashdown too, when he can force Chris to dress up with him. They will get a coffin full of candy and find a way to reach the rafters with ghost lights and cobwebs, everything that made a haunted house haunted.

But here, now, Thorne only bows his head into Chris's touch with a low sound that could be a purr, and looks at him with wild, wild eyes. What he wouldn't do to kiss him here, now, in this heat, in this magical place. What he wouldn't do.

Instead, all he says is, "To the castle, of course. Let's find you a prince to save you from my ruffian hands."
