Zac settled at one of the small tables of the coffee shop with a hot cup of chai being gently set before him, and right behind it a warm, cinnamon roll, dripping with melting buttercream frosting.
With everything else that had happened lately he thought the calorie laden treats were in a way ‘his due’, because lord knew anything else this town and its magical ‘reflection’ could toss his way as punishment or reward would be fundamentally –strange.

Like… strange stones that melted into your hand and squirmed, or finding that your eyes had changed from normal to ‘tiny galaxies’

He picked up the fork on the small plate and sliced a wedge out of the outer most ‘ring’ of the cinnamon roll. He always saved the ‘heart’ for last.

First meeting outside of events!! woo!

As Chris' life slowly came back to normalcy, so did his habits of frequenting coffee shops. He and Thorne had been to this one before, a cozy little shop that had fantastic lattes, and Chris was happy to return back to order a latte for himself and have a little alone time. He'd probably bring back Thorne coffee as well, but for now he just wanted to sit and relax.

He turned with his latte in hand, eyes casting over to find somewhere to sit and - oh.

Carefully he set his coffee down in front of Zac, standing at the edge of the table. "Mind if I join you?" He asked, giving him a small smile.

He had a mouthful, of course he did. That was the rule of people asking if they could join you.

“mMmmmMm!” he managed to do a semi articulate please do despite a fresh mouthful of cinnamon roll and frosting. He indicated the chair across from him as he chewed a bit hastily and swallowed.

“I, please do!” He cleared his throat from a tickling crumb.

“H-how are you sir?” He asked poking gently at his cinnamon roll.

Chris smiled at the affirmation (and the mouthful - he hadn't done it on purpose but it seemed it was a rule of the universe), sitting down in the chair across.

"I'm fine, how are you?" Chris asked in return, taking a long sip of his latte after the question. It was absolutely fantastic, as usual, although the cinnamon roll looked good as well. Maybe he'd bring one back for Thorne.

"Oh, you don't have to call me sir either." Chris frowned, "I'm not that old I don't think, only twenty four. Sir is for like.. Jeremiah."

That made him laugh. Sir was for Jeremiah indeed. “And his husband too, but at least one of them I tend to call ‘Dad’.

“I’m… alright.” He said, there was a moments pause mind you. But to be fair that was because of the ball for the most part.

“What about you?” He asked tipping his head. “I mean, after the whole… if you were at the…” he waved his hand trying to say it without really using that word. ‘Ball’, it just didn’t seem even remotely enough to describe.

“I swear, if I had to talk rather than write papers I’d never pass an English class.” He grumbled and slid his chai closer to warm his hands around the grand mug.

"Ah yeah Alg?" Chris said, happy himself. "Oh, which one? I know both of them were old enough to be dads, but I never really wondered if they had kids. I just call them the grandpas, although I guess Thorne and I count as their kids sometimes, with the way they guide us." There was a heavy amount of amusement in his voice - it was mostly a joke, them being their kids, but Chris and Thorne did take after Alg and Jer enough that it made sense. The whole banana bread affair most definitely came to mind.

"I was there," Chris said quietly, catching on what Zac meant. It was hard to talk about it, to find a word for it. Chris used ball, but it was for lack of a better word really. "It's.. Thorne helps. We find a way."

It was hard to be willing to describe the nightmares he had, the lack of sleep that had been common. The hallucinations.

"See, that's why I took biology. The sciences don't judge you if you can't say what you mean, both when speaking and writing. Hell, they expect you to look up everything basically or just make up your own word if you don't know it," Chris replied, taking another sip of his coffee. "Although I guess teaching is speaking, but I can preplan all of that."

“J-Jerimiah. He um.” He shrugged “I mean, he’s clearly not my actual father but, He’s been my Guardian since I was very young. He was there when other… members of my family couldn’t be. So I call him Dad.” He gave a very slight nervous shrug.

He did widen his grin at the mention of why Chris taught the sciences. “Yeah but, I tend to muck up my numbers. I don’t hate them or anything but, my Mother, she was always trying to get me to learn them from early on but it just made me sort of resent that which is silly. I guess it’s all right though because If anything I’d love to have a place like Bibliophile some day.”

"Ah, Jer?" Chris said, watching Zac. It was clearly a sensitive topic and he didn't want to pry too deep, even if he was curious. "That's nice, he makes a good dad. I'm glad you had him." He smiled, no jugdement. There was a moment of silence then, "So does that make me your weird unrelated brother not brother?" A gentle tease.

"If you're happy with what you do, no need to change it I say," Chris said easily, "Admittedly, biology doesn't have much math beyond basic counting, so I count it as a boon. Not that I can't do math, I passed calculus and all that, but it's so much easier when I don't have to do it. I'm sure you'll own a shop like Bibliophile one day, maybe you'll even inherit from Jer if you'd like that. I'm sure you'd do great with it."

“True… Biology is nicer. It’s … It’s a little harder to do right now though, after the ball I mean.” He sighed. “Maybe it would be easier if I was a healer or something like one.” He shook his head.

He shrugged embarrassed.
“I imagine it’s … worse for other people though.” He admitted.

He shook his head. “I guess… Heliodora is the next one we should watch for awful things to happen to.” He bit his lip as he mused this though, something on his mind.

"Not always," Chris said gently, "But I think you'll figure it out. We can move past the ball." It was all they could do, really, but Chris never worked well with ultimatums.

He nod and took a sip of his latte, just thinking. "I'm not sure what could happen, or if we could even stop it, but might as well. I think out of all of them though, she'll be the one to go down with a fight. She has Pax too, don't forget. I'm just more worried about us, as well. Stuff is starting to get weirder."

“I uumm…” He started and stared down into his tea. He paused longer, stalling by stuffing a sizeable bit of cinnamon roll into his mouth and chewing, washing it down with chai just hot enough that he winced slightly.

“I um, I’m actually trying to see if… we can’t get her home. That was something that Sunny had wanted back when this all started for me. She made my Dad swear to it but….” He shook his head and looked sad.

“He’s not… super pleased with it.” He said softly, which was something of an understatement but I thought it would be worth a try.” He gave a small shrug.
“She has me looking for, how she took the position in the first place.

Chris raised his eyebrows, coffee pausing in its journey to his lips. He set it back down on the saucer, wrapping his fingers around the warmth. Getting Heliodora back home? That sounded like something out of a fantasy, something Chris wanted to do but wasn't sure he could do.

"That'd be amazing if you could," Chris said, voice slightly awed. "Have you found anything out? I've heard there's been cycles and things, so I'm sure there's information around that I just haven't been able to find."

“M… maybe.” He admitted. “I was actually thinking about talking to Thorne about it too. Maybe what I …. I mean if you didn’t mind. I could meet with you and Thorne both. I mean the reason to talk to him is maybe a touch silly.” He admitted.

“I just… runes sort of came up, and I’m not –sure- it’s connected but, I just realized that Thorne is actually the name of a rune so. I thought I might share the book I found.”

"You wanna talk to Thorne?" Chris asked, surprised. His surprise turns to fondness a minute later though, clearly pleased, happy. "Sure, it wouldn't be a problem at all. I love dragging Thorne out of Coalsmoke and anyways, he's always better when I'm around." Blatant lie, but Chris loved being able to get a one up on Thorne even when he wasn't around. "I doubt it's silly though, nothing can be sillier than us. We've argued over bread pudding before," Chris said softly, clearly incredibly fond of Thorne.

"Really? That's super interesting, I'm sure he'd love to see it. I would too, even if I probably can't understand it. Always nice to have information, or even something like trivia if it's not connected."

Zac smiled, there was a comfort in that fondness in the science teacher’s voice, like a warm blanket, a familiar object of comfort that was understandable no matter who it was between.
“I’d have to hear the argument about the pudding before I could weigh in on how silly it was.” He grinned. “But I’m sure you could start some cooking arguments with Jer, like, is it better to use the broiler to top off your Creme Brule or is it cheating to use a blow torch.”

“But um, yes! I can bring it by and we can all talk about them, I mean it was odd, some of them were familiar, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a book on them before, or spent that much time with runes, so I thought perhaps it might be a magical book but - “

he shrugged.

“…it was normal in the Other library and it seems normal here. No hidden pages or mystical notes, just runes.”
