Chris, because Chris was Chris, had decided to offer to do a coffee run for the rest of the TAs in the office. He was only working there for a scarce month, filling in while the University scrambled to find someone to replace the class, but he still wanted to be nice. So being nice meant juggling four orders, plus his own and Thorne's, and also the university credit card for some department that had been flung at him.

Now he stood inside the nearby Starbucks, looking a little worn for the wear as he stared up at the menu with dread, dripping umbrella resting against his leg and leaving wet spots. His university ID was on a lanyard around his neck, along with a nametag that they had been forcing the TAs to wear for some reason.

Horace yawned, jaw-cracking, as he stepped into the coffee shop. Starbucks was over-priced, but he'd heard a body could order a caramel macchiato with pumpkin syrup instead of vanilla. He'd need both the sugar and caffeine today. He stopped next to another man who seemed to be staring at the menu quite seriously.

Tall, grande, venti? How should he phrase his order? Horace wanted to get in and out before the true crowd came. Too many jostling elbows. He glanced at the man next to him, recognizing the face, but not putting a name to it. And it would simply be too rude to lean over to read the name tag more easily. Because he could no longer be reprimanded for talking to strangers, he opened his mouth.

"I don't think the menu bites. But, y'know, it senses fear."

Chris blinked in rapid surprise at the person next to him, turning his head quickly to see who it was. He hadn't meant to get so caught up in the menu, although he deserved it seeing how nothing seemed to line up with the orders in his phone.

"Explains why I can't find anything the other TAs want," Chris grumbled, his eyes looking between his notes on his phone and the menu. "I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get back six orders in this rain, where half of them aren't even black coffee. Guess it's a myth that grad students only drink black coffee, although it's true their souls match it."

He finally looked over fully at who he was talking to, eyes widening a little. He looked vaguely familiar. "Do you work at the university as well? I kind of recognize you."

"Nah, I'm a new student, even if I see a little old for it." Sometimes, he wondered, if he'd stayed back in Oklahoma - would he had gone to college, been more normal? No, he thought, he'd probably be dead. Oh well. "Taking two classes for now. You're a TA?"

"Name's Horace." He did not extend his hand for a shake. "If you need a hand, I've got two free ones. I can run coffee with you." Horace had enough time.

"No such thing as being too old to learn," Chris said back instantly, words falling out of his mouth before he even realized he had said it. He blinked for a second, processing, then said "I'm actually kind of old myself, so you aren't the only one around. Trust me."

"Well, a temp TA anyways. I'm taking a semester off but my adviser has me helping around since most of the professors know me. Once they find a grad student willing to fill the role, I'll relinquish the spot to them."

"Chris," He said giving Horace a smile. "That'd be super helpful, you sure you don't mind? It might take some time since you know, aforementioned order problems."

Horace chuckled. "Said exactly like a teacher. Well, TA i guess." He nodded as Chris continued. "What're you in for? In university, that is." It wouldn't do to make it sound like a prison when it wasn't.

"And yeah, I have time. Not all the time in the world, but close. What'd everybody put down they wanted?"

"Well, I am a teacher when I'm not being a TA," He joked, smiling. "I'm an education major, I teach Science at the schools around here usually. Biology mostly, it's my forte. I'm close to graduating, although I'm taking a semester off and helping out. Getting some money."

Chris shifted, looking out at his phone with the orders. His eyebrows furrowed together as he read out, "A triple, venti, soy, no foam, latte. A venti one-half and one half, ten pumps vanilla, extra whip? And then finally, an iced, half caff, ristretto, venti, four pump, sugar free, cinnamon, dolce soy skinny latte."

He looked incredibly pained reading out the order, like he was speaking another language. "The other one wants a trenta cold brew coffee, whatever has the most caffeine. And I just want a pumpkin spice latte and one for my friend."

He frowned as Chris read off the order. What the ******** s**t. "Well, you're in right luck, as I love coffee more than my damn left arm and can recognize all those terms. However, whoever ordered a half caf ristretto is dumb." He chewed on his lip. "I'm not every sure they can do ristrettos... and I don't think skinny soy even exists. Is this... is this some kind of hazing thing?"

Everything else on the list was doable, especially Chris and his friend's easy peasy pumpkin spice lattes. What happened to the age of wonderful normal coffee? He'd had to choke back a gag at the thought of ten pumps of vanilla.

"I swear on you this isn't hazing, just some really, really tired TAs," Chris laughed, relieved that someone actually knew what the hell he was staring at beyond the three easy orders that he had garnered. "I'm sure they'll accept some mostly modified orders, so long as it keeps them awake. Or tastes close to the same. Frankly I'm not sure how they're still alive."

He shot Horace a smile, said, "I'm glad you actually know what the hell I'm talking about. I speak two languages and yet everything sounded like gibberish honestly."

"Why so little sleep - are they running you ragged?" Horace had no idea what being a TA was like. Presumably, it was doing whatever the professor didn't want to do. Probably a lot of grading. "If you want, I can just go up and order for you, since we gotta make modifications?" He gestured towards the list.

"And don't worry about not understanding it. It's a completely different language that most people don't need to know because they are content with classics." He laughed a little. "What languages do you know?"

Chris shook his head with a fond smile. "No, I just don't sleep very well in the first place. As for the others, it's probably just studying and stress. They'll come out alright, we all tend to do." The grading on top of studying did cost some sleep, but Chris just knew from experience (before Other Ashdown decided to ruin his life anyways, plague him with nightmares) that it would all turn out alright. By the time students hit TA status, they knew how to balance life and sleep, mostly catching up on the weekend. "Oh my god that'd be a lifesaver, I swear you came here to save me. Please show me the way."

Chris laughed a little himself, feeling better. "Korean and English, I learned from my parents. Nothing special really, just blessed with different parents. I'd like to learn more, but haven't really had the time."

"Sleep is my best friend." In actuality, though, while Horace loved sleep, it evaded him often. Came with the territory. "And nice! I only know, like, the colors in French, but I'm learning Spanish."

"Here, can I borrow your phone to order?"

"I wish sleep was as kind to me as it is to you," He laughed. "Spanish is nice, I think I know up to ten in Spanish. Although kind of everyone does, now that I think about it."

He blinked, realizing that would be needed. "Oh yeah, sure," Chris said, handing it over. "Honestly I'm glad I'm not paying for it. Just, add your drink onto the order too actually, we'll call it a fee for giving me what was basically another language and me having to find a translator."

Living in Oklahoma, it was impossible not to pick up the very very basics, but it wasn't enough Spanish to do anything with. Horace gingerly took Chris' phone and stepped up to the counter where the bored barista had been watching them. He didn't particularly like touching other people's things, but this was a necessity.

"Got a big order, sorry." The iced, half caff, ristretto, venti, four pump, sugar free, cinnamon, dolce soy skinny latte was pared down into a venti iced half caf four pump, sugar free, cinnamon dolce soy latter. He highly doubted whomever it was would notice the differences. He also added a shot of espresso to the poor soul with the cold brew. For himself, it was just a plain coffee. He'd dump a ******** of sugar in it later. The barista had been looking haggard, but her expression switched to relieved as the drinks got simpler.

Grabbing two drink holders, he tossed one to Chris. "Here - we'll need it. Thanks for getting my coffee, too. Courier's fee." He grinned and then handed the phone back. "Next time, make the one with the cinnamon dolce soy thing pick up the order."

Chris just about wanted to cry out of pity at the poor barista's face when she saw the drink order. The price itself was also another thing to swallow, but since it technically wasn't him paying, he handed over the University card without problem and decided to let the other TAs handle explaining that. They obviously weren't new to this game anyways.

"Thanks," Chris said to Horace gratefully, taking the drink holder with ease. "Next time I won't even offer, I didn't know what the horror of the order was. I feel like I was tricked."
