Quote:
School, the first day of university, and Seung was ready for it. He had gotten his things together in his school bag and had left almost an hour before so he could get to campus, find the building for his first class, and find the room all in time for class to start.
The first class was, much to his happiness, Japanese 101. It would be the easy class for him, one he could sit back and enjoy, and he was ready for it. He was ready to get back into a university setting and go back to what he’d been working on back home, though he also was planning to take some literature classes for himself.
Checking his phone when he arrived on campus he sent a text, while walking toward the building someone had pointed him in the direction of, to Terry. He was letting the other know he’d arrived well, and on time, and that he would see him around lunch time when they both would be free to meet in the cafeteria and eat lunch together. He had packed his own lunch, he’d cooked this morning before departing for campus, and had it all packed up nice and neatly.
His glasses did a good job in obscuring his eyes, though not completely, as he stepped into the building and glanced about at the hustle and bustle of students and professors alike. If classrooms ran like he thought they did then his room would be on the third floor, since the room number was 326. Biting his bottom lip, for a brief moment, Seung went and headed for what appeared to be the main staircase and made his way up quickly. Pushing his glasses back into place, he really couldn’t wait till he could stop wearing them, he hurried his way to the room and a quick look about revealed signs on the walls which indicated what room numbers were down that hall - easy.
Going down the right hall the room was to the left and half way down the hall, really this was easy and convenient. The door was open and a few other early to arrive students were already inside, a few looked interesting while some he only saw the back of their heads. It looked well balanced, gender wise, and most were caucasian he noted, though it wasn’t for any particular reason that he noticed it other than taking stock of his classmates. He had, on his way up the stairs, wondered if any would be of Japanese heritage and wanting to learn their language or people doing like him, taking a language they already knew.
As he stepped inside and called out a greeting, as someone had greeted him, he was not expecting some girl to turn around and after a moment to call out senpai to him. For a moment he froze, dark eyes watching her light eyes, before he shook his head. “Not Japanese.” He went to correct her while stepping further into the room, the discussion ended right there as far as he was concerned.
The classroom was a computer room, with computer lining the perimeter of the room, and Seung went for the back corner and sat himself down in front of a computer. As he sat down someone else, the one who greeted him, asked him about his accent and where it was from. Not at all minding the question, he’d heard some people got offended by such things, he answered with South Korea. His school bag was put onto the desk next to the flat screen of the computer and opened. Pulling out a notebook, the class text book, and a pen he set them down and closed his bag. He was prepared and ready for when the professor would arrive - hopefully on time.
It seemed the blond girl, she should really touch up her dark roots, had gotten over the correction and minor snub and was back to chatting with the group gathered. He didn’t notice she kept looking at him. He didn’t notice anything was off till she was sitting by him as class started seven minutes later.
He wondered why she had moved to sit by him, why she kept looking at him and seemed distracted. As the professor asked for introductions he waited his turn before doing so, last name first and then his given name. He knew his professor would understand, the man also had an accent and it was a Japanese one - just as his name was.
Class had gone well, the professor was kind and kind in nature, he had asked if he was Korean - though the man said it was obvious. He had asked if he knew the language already, he had nodded and said he did. He didn’t say that he was fluent in it, just that he knew it, and class had gone on.
It was short, too short, and he didn’t understand why nothing was taught. All they did today was go over expectations, course outline, the book which was needed, and school policies and rules. There was no lesson - no learning done, well no learning as far as the language went.
When they were dismissed he stood and approaching the professor's desk, bowing, he asked about it and was told that while it wasn’t a necessary thing it was a typical thing on the first day of classes. That was...hard to grasp for him...not teaching in school?
He had thanked his professor for explaining it to him and wished him a good day, before bowing and leaving. The female was waiting there, outside the door, with a few friends and he paid it no mind as he shouldered his bag and headed off. He now had free time before his next class, Literature 101.
The next two classes were the same as the first, short and simple and utterly boring. He’d heard the speech three times now and while the words were different the message was clearly the same thing. By the time lunch rolled around, and he had one more class, he was hoping for some variation in the last class but highly doubting it. He figured the only variation today would be in lunch. There would be no speeches and no lack of teaching, at least no lack of teaching where there should be teaching. It had been disappointing today.
Stepping into the cafeteria Seung’s dark eyes drifted about the room while he made to find a small table somewhere private, even as the smells of various foods filled his nostrils and had him wondering about the foods here. What sorts of foods were served here? Were they any good? Where did they stack up against places outside of here that made the same foods - the quality and recipes. He did wonder but he also kept his dark eyes on the lookout for Terry.

Terry’s day had been rather typical for a first day of school semester, at least what he was used to. Every class he went to had their introductions with nothing really taught, though in his coding class the professor had let them play around on the computers once the introductory was over. By the time lunch came around he had already sent a return text to Seung about when he would be free as well and was glad to see they both had free time about the same time, though he got out a bit earlier and had his next class a bit later. Since he had a bit more time before Seung would be meeting him, the young man found them a semi-private seat in the cafeteria and was reading over the first chapters of his books while he waited for the other man to show, though he did look up from time to time to check.
When Seung arrived, Terry didn’t notice at first since he was finishing off a paragraph in one of his textbooks but after a minute he looked up to spot him. He carefully set the book to the side and partially stood up to raise a hand and wave to catch Seung’s attention with a smile.

People moving around, people standing up, it all caught his attention as he was looking for Terry. He had turned his phone to silent and had forgotten, thus far, to turn the sound back on so the text went unheard and unanswered. He did however, thanks to his own looking all about, spot Terry when he started to stand. Rushing over to him, just as he heard that word again - sempai, and sat himself right next to Terry.
The girl, hopefully, hadn’t seen where he had hurried to or would get the message and not follow him. Taking his lunch box out he set it down and opening it he withdrew his metal chop sticks from his school back, where he was keeping them in a small zipped up compartment. “Is always no lessons on first day?” He asked then, finally looking to the other.
Inside his food box was kimchi, rice, some pork, and some more vegetables. He also had a small sealed container with soup in it. Everything was in small portions but was all good and healthy, all freshly made.

When Seung made it over to the table he had been at, Terry’s smile grew a bit and he sat back down, pulling his own lunch out. While the food options on campus were pretty good, he had just figured to bring something from home on the first day. “Yes it’s normal, sometimes the professor will give little homework assignments or let you play around with whatever is the class subject but normally they just stick to introductions, though I know there are a few teachers that prefer to start on the actual first day those are usually for short or very involved classes. It makes it easier on both students and teachers to not have to worry about jumping right into things on the first day.” He said as he tucked his books into his bag so they weren’t taking up space on the table.
Quote:
Nodding to the others words, understanding most of what Terry said, and slowly he extended the lengthening metal chopsticks he had. Taking a bite of kimchi and rice he hummed once before looking to the other. “Had three good classes...all the same. Girl in first class was...odd...called me senpai.” He said knowing that Terry would know that term, as the other did watch anime and read manga. It was the wrong language, though he knew Japanese, but to be called that randomly...it was very odd for him. He was ok with oppa by those younger females he knew and was close to.
Another bite of vegetable and rice, with a bit of meat and inside a leaf. He tapped his chopsticks to the container as he watched the other.

“Just from what the professors explained, do you think you are going to enjoy the classes so far or is it too early to tell?” Terry asked though he gave a ‘what can you do’ look and a shrug about the girl. She would hopefully simmer down as she was probably an otaku and got excited. He took a bite of his own food, a couple simple but healthy sandwiches, while waiting on Seung’s response about his classes.

“Think will be good. Japanese will be easy, didn’t tell professor how much I know.” Shrugging as he took another leaf and filled it with rice, meat, vegetables and a bit of kimchi. Eating slowly he took his soup and uncapping it took the small spoon from the food box, in order to eat the soup, and started to do just that. “He is Japanese, from Japan.” The man was kind, soft spoken, but he was sure he was also a strict professor and would make sure they learned and did well.
“Other classes, business ones, will be expected...no surprises.”Seung answered then and had to adjust his glasses. He liked them, the shape, but he still wasn’t a fan of glasses as a whole. But he had a week or so more to wear them...a few days till the weekend and then a few days after.

“That’s good, I’m glad you have a class that will be easy. It’s always best to start off a bit easier when you first get into something.” Terry said with a nod. It also was a good way to make sure the other man didn’t go overboard with overworking himself as well but he wasn’t going to say that out loud. “It would probably be a bit too early to tell if those classes will at least be interesting I suppose.” He said in reference to Seung’s business classes.

“Japanese I took in school...separate from English….took it because I wanted to, and had a friend half Japanese.” Akihiko, who had left him. In the past, right after it had happened, his anger at the other had mingled with his sadness and grief. He wished he could shout and yell at him, tell him how stupid he was and how much he had loved him. He was the reason, in part, that he wanted to write and was working on a book; however slowly. Akihiko was why, in part, he had decided to learn Japanese. He was the reason for a lot of things...and the cause for many things.
Now he sometimes wondered how things would have been had it not happened, would they still be friends? Would he have told him or slipped somehow? Would they be more than friends...or would the friendship have ended by now? So many questions and no answers. It wasn’t something he thought on often, he couldn’t - there was a here and now. The here and now were important - they were relevant. He was mostly happy with the here and now as well.
“Of course, though likely was harder back home than here...but English still makes it harder and different business laws I think...maybe not. Maybe different practices.” Maybe both. He would find out - he was sure of that. “I will do my best no matter what. Fighting.” The little fist pump as he said the last word.

Terry bit back a frown when he felt the mixed emotions coming from Seung then reached over and took one of the other man’s hands in his own to give it a supportive squeeze. “He must have been a good friend.” He said after a moment, though he wasn’t sure if those would be the right words to say in response. Not with the pain the other was feeling. If it wasn’t for the fact that they were on opposite sides of the table Terry would have pulled the other into a hug by now.
The slight change of subject, though more of a continuation of one, was met with a nod in understanding and a small smile at the fist pump. “I know you will and you will do fantastic.”

Returning the squeeze the dark haired male nodded once,. Standing he moved to sit next to the other, and leaned into his side, holding onto the others hand now. Moving his food, and everything else, so he was situated properly now in his new seat. Nibbling his food at this point, his thoughts a bit adrift as he worked on his wording for what he was going to say. He took the time to answer - to explain.
“Was my best friend...first crush...couldn’t tell him.” Terry would, by now, understand why that was. “Was a little older...my hyung.” And they had been close...had done a lot together. “Likes fantasy books...fairytales and magic…imagination.” In a society where school kids went to school for so many hours...all seemed very much the same...he was a breath of fresh air in ways - he was different. Yet he came from a culture like that also - sameness...and a lot of emphasis put into school.
“I hope so...language still makes it hard. I want to do well though.” He had to do well, he had people to make proud and to honor.

Terry gave Seung a smile when the other man moved to sit next to him and pressed their sides together when he was settled. He nodded in understanding as Seung continued on to explain, indeed understanding why the older man wouldn’t, and couldn’t, tell his friend his feelings. He rubbed his thumb over the back of Seung’s hand as he listened to the description. “Trust me, you will do very well.”
Quote:
“Hope so...I think I will.” He would do his best, put in as much effort as he could and as much as was needed. He wanted to do well...to make something of himself. Not that he wasn’t worth it now, not that he didn’t have worth. But he felt like he needed to do well and to get the job his father wanted him to get...he still felt it, it was just ingrained into him to feel that need.
Moving back to his food, slowly, he offered a bit to the other. It wasn’t anything Terry hadn’t had before, some veggies and rice, a bit of meat. His lunch was small, at least to most people it would be, for himself it was normal.

“I know you will.” Terry said with a nod. He didn’t doubt that Seung would throw his all into the classes he had, which was one of the reasons why he had pushed the other to go with at least one easy class. He had learned from his own mistakes, at least a little bit anyway, so had been sure to stir the other man away from taking a heavy load for his first semester.
Terry gave a smile and took the offered bite before offering Seung one of his sandwiches. “I made one to many this morning so you could have it if you like.” If he had made it on the off chance to be able to give it to Seung he certainly wasn’t going to say as much though.

Surprised by the return offer of food, and not one to turn it down out of politeness if nothing else, he accepted and setting down his chopsticks took to nibbling on the sandwich. “No need for language class for you?” Seung asked rather curious. His professor had opened up the class talking about knowing that everyone had to take a language, and wanting to know why Japanese, so he was wondering if Terry had to also or if he already had.
If he hadn’t yet, and needed to, Seung would of course offer to help the other. He did wonder if they taught Korean, he hadn’t honestly looked as he had felt that the idea was beyond taking an easy class. If he took a class on his own native language it was just...unfair. He wasn’t doing much better by taking Japanese though, but at least he still had things to learn...just not in a 101 class.
“Do you know spots...and clubs? Some were talking about things...don’t know any of them.” Not that he was likely to join anything but maybe, if anything interested him enough.

Terry kept the victory off his face when Seung took the offered food, glad it meant that the other was eating just a bit more than he other wise would have. “I still need to take one, I just hadn’t decided on what language I wanted to take to be honest.” He had been tempted by the Japanese class though so depending on how Seung reported how it was he might try that. Alternately he could check into if they offered up Korean to surprise Seung. Food for thought.
“I know a few spots. Though it would be best to go to some of the club recruitment seminars to get an idea on what types of clubs and where they were.” He had ended up joining a club in his first year though he hadn’t spent much time going to the meetings this year.

“I can help with language.” He might still need to work on his English but he spoke two other languages fluently. He did know, for a fact, the school taught Korean but the guidance counselor wouldn’t let him take it since he was from Korea. He hadn’t told them he was fluent in Japanese...so he had gotten away with taking it. They hadn’t looked at the fact he had taken it back home in school. He had gotten away with taking the easy, for him, class.
“Ok….where to look for this information?” Taking a bite of the sandwich he’d gotten from the other. Chewing slowly, watching the other, he was glad for the time they could spend together.
“Might want to join...to help with English and do better here.” He wouldn’t say make friends, he was fine with almost all of the friends he had being involved in the war, but he could learn from watching and interacting with people in the club.

“Thanks, I probably will end up taking you up on that offer.” Terry said with a chuckle. On one hand he didn’t want to add more to Seung’s plate but on the other he was sure it would be better to have some help in the long run. Of course he had to actually decide which class to take and then sign up for it anyway so maybe the other man wouldn’t be as busy.
“The website is the surest bet to find the information, though sometimes there will be fliers or people advertising clubs or meetings.” He paused in thought if he could remember if there were any scheduled club advertising meetings but couldn’t think of any until the fall semester started.

Nodding his head, glad to hear it, he liked the idea that he might be able to help the other...and contribute in some way. He felt too often, since moving to Destiny City, that he was the one needing help and getting it from various people. To give help to another person...it was nice and perhaps a bit comforting and relaxing. The role reversal would be a nice change in things.
“Ok, will look later...can help me with knowing what some are about?” A little more info than what a flier might provide would be good, if Terry could offer it. A club or some meeting spot of people would help, he hoped, with his English skills. “Need something….I can fit in with.” And he also didn’t know where he would fit in. He hated being the new person, and not just to the school but the city and the country. It still had him feeling very...off and not himself.

Terry nodded in agreement with a smile. “Sure, that won’t be a problem. I can’t recall just how many clubs there are but I do remember where on the website lists them all.” He said then his smile briefly dipped when Seung said how he wanted to feel like he was fitting in. It wasn’t that he was opposed to the idea, not at all, he just wished he could do more to help. “I’m sure we can find something you would enjoy.” He reached over and brushed his knuckles against Seung’s cheek, smile returning.
Quote:
Leaning into the gentle touch, briefly his lashes fluttered and his eyes even closed. When they opened he was staring at the other. “That will help...thank you.” He appreciated it - a lot. It would help...he just had to find a club he could fit in with, till he got his feet under him again. “I’ll come over tonight.” So Terry could help him find the place on the website, and to spend time together. “I can bring dinner - for family.” At some point he’d finished the sandwich Terry had given him, and a good portion of his own meal. Noting that he offered one of the last bites to Terry. “Almost time for next class.”
Quote:
Terry’s smile grew when he saw Seung’s expression, glad he had that effect on the other. “You’re welcome.” He said then nodded when the other man said he would be coming over, not surprised in the least. “You don’t have to do that but thank you.” The younger man gave another smile and accepted the bite before finishing off his own meal that had been steadily consumed as well. “Don’t be surprised or disappointed if it’s another introduction class, but have fun if possible.” Terry himself had a little bit before his next class so he would probably hang out here a little longer then head towards the next class room.
Quote:
“Just hope you and family will like dinner. Maybe some American also…” Since he was planning on food he was familiar with, as he knew what everything was that he’d be ordering. It was familiar and a comfort to him...plus maybe...just maybe he wanted to share his own foods with Terry’s family. They were nice enough to accept him when he’d first come over and Terry had introduced him, as his boyfriend. They accepted him and did what they could for him, letting him spend nights often, be there during family time like the Olympic soccer games he’d seen with them. It was nice...it was something he couldn’t do with his own family and Terry...at least not in the context of the other being boy partner.
“Won’t be...not knowing now it is normal. Did not expect it.” He had been prepared to jump right into the lessons. Now he knew better and was prepared for it. Finishing his food he moved in for a quick press of lips before he got up. “Going to go now, don’t want to be late.” He had a classroom to find. “Have good day and see you tonight.”
