Jeremiah had said he would do it, among other things he had promised, and it had taken some time to get the final documents in. It was not often that he took advantage of certain connections that he had, let alone as extensively, but he had and did so without regret. He was leaning against his car, flipping through texts on his phone, and waiting for Lady. Jeremiah was picking her up after one of her tutoring sessions, to give her a ride and deliver the last bits that made her life official. There might also have been something from the local coffee shop for her in the car as well but that was only because he texted her beforehand to find out what she wanted.

She joined Jeremiah by his weird-a** car, backpack slung over one shoulder and netbook tucked up against her side. It was weird to get picked up by someone, like she was a child or something, but she thought she maybe kinda liked it, a little. "Hi, Jer," she said, and she noted that she must've gotten taller in the time she'd been away. She didn't remember Detective Mercer being so small. "Um, you said you had paperwork," she said.

It was worth nothing Jeremiah did not quite remember being eye level with her when she had been this age. Put her in heels or boots? Lady would have height on him. Not that he seemed bothered (and was more or less amused by it.) He did not even say a word at being called Jer. "Very important paperwork, in fact." The car door was pulled open and he leaned in to pull out an envelope (which was not so surprisingly, full of every bit of documentation she needed for this new life of hers). That was held out a moment later for her to take before he was leaning back in. "Oh and coffee for you, though I make no promises the barista got it right."

Lady looked at the paperwork. A birth certificate, a provisional driver's license, a social security card: Adelaide Tatton, Massachusetts resident. There was a stinging in her nose, at the corners of her eyes, and rather than letting her tears fall she forced a yawn. This was everyday for her. This was normal for her. This wasn't the final confirmation that she was never, ever going to be her brother's twin, not ever again. They weren't even related anymore. The coffee was s**t, too sweet by far, but Lady didn't have enough care to care. She drank it anyway. "So that's that," she said. "Game over. What do I owe you?"

"Nothing." The reply was immediate, Jeremiah watching her and her reaction. She held herself well and he could see the poise and control that had likely come from the time she had been at court. "Really. You deserve a life, Krasnya." An irony given the change in height. She had been small when he had first called her that. "Even if it is not the one that was stolen from you." Even if she would never truly be Aleky's twin again. Not in name at least (and perhaps not blood as well). "You deserve more but I'll leave it to you to take control of the rest." He shifted on his feet, fingers raking through his hair. Truthfully some measure of it was because of who she was sister to but there was also fondness for her as well.

"I murdered somebody," said Lady. She shoved the folder into her bag and wrapped an arm around herself. "I murdered somebody and you're being so nice to me even though I murdered somebody. Shouldn't you be, like. Mad?"

"I am," Jeremiah admitted, "but not at you." Bright blue-green eyes focused on her, on the green that was familiar to him but he had not seen it in years. "I am not so foolish as to assume that in your position I would not have done the same thing. If it would get me back home? I would likely do whatever it took to make it happen."

"I used to play at being a detective, you know," said Lady. She used to follow along with investigations in the newspaper, imagining how she would have done it better. When cases were closed, she'd go to the places where the crime had occurred. She'd look at them from different angles, imagine being there with the blood and the gore and the shattered glass. "I thought justice was all that mattered. And I thought I knew what it was." She scratches an itch at her temple, runs a hand over her long braid. "Younger me was stupid." For her, it'd only been months. But it was years... and she had stayed behind.

"Younger you was young." Jeremiah shook his head once more, bright eyes focused on her intently. "Your world was more black and white then and now-" His shoulders lifted once and then fell in a slight shrug. "It's all grey." A hand raked through his hair, though he somehow managed to keep it perfect. "I can't say that I wasn't the same. As stupid as it sounds, it's what you do now that matters. Do you let what happen ruin you? Or do you own it?" He looks at her with another smile but this one is odd, just like his eyes can be. "Much like how I have to own that my deal with Sunny? It's long since been broken but I'll own that and what follows. I can't let it stop me from doing what it takes to see this cage break."

"I don't think I have to let it ruin me," she said. "I think it already has." Lady fiddled with the strap of her bag. "I'm gonna walk home, I think, Mr. Mercer. If that's okay."

"I think you're stronger than you realize," Jeremiah replied but he let it go. His head inclined. "If that's what you want, it most certainly is." He would not push a ride upon her if she did not want it. "I gave you what you need." He gave her a small smile before opening up his car door. "Tell Leila and Eve I said hello, won't you? I'll be stopping by later this week with their house warming gifts." Then he was getting in the car to leave. It wasn't until he was certain she was walking and heading home that he would actually start driving himself but he would. Sometimes people were better left to their own devices and thoughts.
