Reports were coming in of two Janarim packs causing a bit of damage close to the city. With concerns of breeding season, and pups on the lose, many were worried with the news. If a mother (or mothers) were protecting their young, it could be a vicious mission for anyone who was assigned. As a result, it came across Nuri's desk despite his recent role as training others with foreign familiars.
Of course, things were going well. It had been years since he returned from Mammu from Zena (the poor creatures struggled in the heat and as a result were often taken to cooler outposts up north), Kinfa from Tale, and the Limbara from Yaeli. All of the tamers did well with such creatures, and his children enjoyed the new company and ability to brag that their father could tame anything. The timing was right for him to get his feet wet and go on a mission, so Nuri easily agreed and traded his papers for his whip.
As he set off, with Naraka at his side, he felt a sense of dejavu. It felt like back when he first joined the army, on missions to patrol the roads and make sure travelers were safe. Back then, it was a chore, but now it felt a bit refreshing. Maybe he should step in more often, join his cadets as they set off and help them to keep him active and young. As that thought crossed his mind, he made his way to where one younger tamer was waiting, signaling toward a rocky outcrop that echoed with sounds of Janarim fighting. Yes, anyone who approached would most likely be pulled into whatever scuffle was happening.
And it was much too close to a major trail for him to be comfortable with.
It took some time for him to find the right path to access through the rock nest, and eventually he was able to scale a little higher to peer down at what was going on. Naraka, without any command, quietly moved around to the side so that they could funnel the creatures away from the road. As he looked over, he noticed a scuffle between one female and two males. It seemed the female was protecting a nest, and the males were attempting to get something within. Not worrying too much about it, Nuri edged back down and away from the female.
Despite the fact there were two males, the female was most likely protecting young, which meant she would be the most stubborn and biggest threat. It would be foolish to think she'd be on his side in any sort of fight, odds are she'd see him as a weak kill and go after him as well. No, he'd need to send off the two males and hope he could find a way to get the female to calm down.
As he wandered to the side, Naraka did a great job of keeping close. The beast was one he met when he was younger, and having raised the creature since it was a whelp he knew that they had a strong bond. A bond that many most likely would never manage to maintain with wild creatures. He was grateful of his relationship with the Janarim, and trusted the beast with his life. Naraka was there, through everything, and he knew he would be lost without his companion.
Rounding the corner, he jumped down and cracked his whip. Before him, all three creatures turned and roared, but the closest one was suddenly tackled by Naraka and they rolled away. It was young, and Naraka did his part well by distracting the creature enough to hold it away. As he did so, Nuri moved to snap and crack his whip, trying to stop the two from fighting. But it didn't work, and soon enough the male was snarling and the female slamming her tail on the ground. Maybe this wasn't the best of ideas.
Suddenly, the male charged, and Nuri moved out of the way and away from the area. Turning, he watched as Naraka slammed into the other male, and decided it would be best to focus on the one with his familiar and deal with the other two when he had a chance. Approaching the male, he moved to snap his whip once more, and the younger creature backed up into a corner. It was angry, spitting, but it seemed to want to respect the whip for the time being.

With them being in the rocky outcrop, it wasn't ideal to simply run the creature off. Instead, Nuri debated finding a way to capture or tame the creature. It was young, and angry, but maybe he had a chance. It wouldn't be a bad idea, and the creature had enough guts to do well within the army. So, Nuri turned and grinned to his familiar. This was an old task, one that Naraka was very familiar with. The beast wouldn't be reasoned with, so they either needed to exhaust it or capture it to the best of their ability.
"Alright, let's go nice and slow."
And with that, he moved to the side, and Naraka took the lead. It was a bit too tight for Nuri to dodge, and he trusted his large Janarim to keep the younger one in line. Snapping his whip in time with his familiar's thumping tail, they seemed to catch the creature's attention. It fell back a bit, before hitting the wall and suddenly the air shifted. It knew it was trapped, and this was the make or break moment. Unfortunately, it seemed it would break.
Letting out a roar, the creature lunged toward Nuri, who moved and rolled and barely missed being slammed by the tail. As a result, the creature was free and rushed off, avoiding the other two and escaping in the distance.
Sighing, Nuri turned and evaluated the other two he had yet to face.
