Rhode “Look, Saffron, really, I’m fine.” The stallion huffed, taking a few steps in the opposite direction from the persistent mare. Saffron “Oh come on, Rhode. Don’t be absurd. Look at you! You’re a mess. Please, I just want to talk.” Saffron looked at her brother, worry clouding her usually collected gaze. Rhode Rhode felt his frustration start to rise. He didn’t want anyone to bother him, especially not anyone from his family. Didn’t they realise he’d done enough? He just wanted to get away. Saffron Saffron wasn’t one to give up, she followed after the stubborn stallion, her tentacles writhing about her neck in a determined frustration. “I’m not leaving until you talk to me!” Rhode The stallion stopped, gritting his teeth. “What do you even want to talk about?” But he knew the moment he’d stopped he’d already lost the fight. Saffron was annoyingly tenacious, there was no victory to be had against her. Saffron The mare’s eyes flashed with satisfaction. An answer, finally. “Oh, I don’t know. Why you’re skulking around here by yourself? In the dark? Alone? Why you haven’t spoken to anyone in months?” Rhode Rhode huffed in frustration, feeling a familiar despair well up within him. “Look, Saff. I get that you want to look after me, but really. I’m a grown man now. I don’t need you tailing after me.” His tail slowly raised itself of its own accord, completely unknown to Rhode, and hovered threateningly over his rump. The tail had a mind of its own, and the stallion could not voluntarily control it. Saffron She pressed an ear backwards in frustration. One of her wings raised itself into the air, the hand running its way through her mane to try to soothe it back into place. It had the unfortunate tendency to wrap itself into all sorts of knots when she was irritated. “You’re avoiding my questions.” Rhode The stallion was about to shoot back a short retort when his hand beat him to it. Frustrated at it’s owner’s lack of common sense, it decided to give him a good smack across the backside. The stallion let out a loud yell, turning on it. “WHAT THE HELL?!? You absolute piece of trash I should rip you from my body!” Saffron Saffron gave him a pointed look. The tail had always been Rhode’s better side, it liked her, it liked the whole family. Only Rhode was too obstinate to realise that it was only looking out for him most of the time. Rhode He winced in pain as he turned back to Saffron, trying to ignore the hand that was now gesturing towards Saffron in a ‘go on, tell her the truth’ manner. “Look, I just like it better on my own, okay? The night is peaceful and quiet and I just like the solitude.” Saffron She frowned at him, though her ear perked back up good-naturedly at the antics of his tail. “Rhode, we’re not talking about you going on a midnight stroll here. You’ve blocked yourself off from everyone. I’m worried about you. I bet you don’t know the first thing that’s going on between any of us. Did you know Sakura was pregnant again? No?” Of course not, why would he?

Rhode Okay. She had him there – out of all the news he’d been expecting, that particular piece wasn’t one of them. “Pregnant, what for?” He snorted, but beneath his obstinate façade a spark of curiosity grew. Saffron “So you didn’t know.” Saffron gave him a victorious grin. “Rhode, this isn’t healthy. You can’t just wander off alone, forever. What sort of life is that? Come on, I’m your sister. You don’t need to run from me.” Rhode He pressed his ear back. This wasn’t where he wanted the conversation to go. Didn’t she realise he was cursed? They were cursed? They had no business around ordinary people, they only screwed up the lives of everyone around them. Saffron She could see Rhode’s lips purse shut, the glimmer of resentment deep within his eyes. Fine. Maybe they could just do some smaller talk, maybe that would bring him out of his shell better. “Yes, she’s pregnant. Don’t think she expected it.” Rhode Rhode frowned, but settled into a more relaxed pose. “Wasn’t she off on some stupid quest? What did she get knocked up for?” His hand-tail twitched with displeasure for a moment, but Rhode didn’t pay any attention. Slowly, it slinked upwards, creeping towards his mane, before grabbing a handful and giving up a sharp yank. “OW.” He yelped, but didn’t start too much. “What? It’s true.” His hand tightened its grip on his mane. He gritted his teeth, determined not to give in. Saffron Saffron gave a sad sigh. “Rhode, this is important to her. I know father wasn’t around much for us, but she knew him for longer. She really doesn’t think he would have abandoned us voluntarily.” Rhode “So what, either he left us or he died. Don’t see the big difference. He’s gone, we got left behind.” Saffron “It’ll bring her peace, Rhode. She was going crazy hanging around our birthplace, not moving on with life. At least now she can find her answers and actually live for a bit.” Only the twitchy shifting of her tentacles betrayed her irritation at her brother. Sometimes he could be so big-headed. Rhode He let out a reluctant acknowledging grumble, averting his gaze slightly. The hand unwound from his mane, settling back to hang by his side. Saffron “Anyway. You heard about Eya, right? Eya Rose?” Rhode His ear twitched. Eya had been their mother’s name. And Sakura had bestowed it upon his niece. “I guess I heard a little.” Saffron “The spirits gave Sakura a basket while she was travelling. That was when Sakura was really bad, you know when it obsessed her like crazy?” Rhode Honestly, he hadn’t seen much of Sakura the last few years. Only bits and pieces here, as his siblings brought the stray rumours to him. “Vaguely.” Saffron “Right, well. Rose didn’t much like all that travelling, and she and Sakura fought a lot. She ran away, had a huge fight with her mother.” Rhode Sakura screwing up raising more foals? Their family really was cursed. But his chest stung slightly at the news. Sakura had always been kind, keeping the rest of them together and on track. She’d always dreamed of foals of her own, but apparently the past haunted her too much to let her live her ideal life. Saffron “So, getting the news she’s having more foals wasn’t really ideal. She doesn’t want to mess them up like she did with Rose. So, hear this. Her solution? She’s giving them to Casper. Yep. Casper’s going to raise her foals for her. And I hear the biological father’s coming to help too…”
