An hour ago a giraffe had not been wandering through the swamp. But now that it was, it definitely stood out. It - he - was about three times taller than any of the humans around, carrying some formerly pink and teal scraps of cloth, and wearing a Mark of Dionysus snugly around its neck. And it didn't seem like it cared much about stealth: just sampling all the flowers in the vicinity of its very long neck. It was trailing a number of leaves and twigs, too: not all of the trees, of course, were tall enough that it could avoid really navigating without without thwacking its head into branches, so every so often it'd get caught and have to detangle itself with a strange braying sound. It definitely was not in a savannah, for damn sure. And something about the way that it moved - instinct-driven, sure, but still very uncertain about what it was doing with all of its long, graceful limbs - made it seem even more alien.

To those that knew him it might seem reasonable that this giraffe was, indeed, Ernst Nzikobankunda. He'd always had that kind of dreamy expression and those big eyes, although they were much harder to see from the ground now. He'd always moved a little gracefully, and his limbs had always been long and lanky - maybe not quite to this extent, but still very noticeably so. He was still wearing his Mark of Dionysus, although it'd hung loosely on his neck before. He'd always liked flowe - okay, that was a reach. Ernst liked floral patterns but he'd never shown much of an affinity for real flowers. Still, it kind of made sense? Right? Maybe in the very unconscious depths of Ernst's mind, where he did want dearly to be rescued.

Even if you didn't recognize Ernst now - and who would, even given all of that? - it was quite obvious that he was out of place, and pretty ruffled by it. This was a turned human, and a Chosen by the looks of the Mark. Fortunately he didn't make himself very difficult to find, or track: despite the relative peacefulness of his actions, he was leaving a distinct trail of snapped twigs in his wake. Also, he was really, really tall, and thus very, very hard to miss.

Actually subduing him, though? That might prove a bit harder. He looked peaceful now, but if experience had taught them anything, that wouldn't necessarily stay true.

Asher's hunt had been one for privacy, not one to help people out. It had lead him out far enough from camp that the sound of conversation had muted to a distant, unintelligible murmur, that there were few footsteps here, that he could set a hand up against a tree and take care of some very private pressing business.

He was lucky. He was done, before he heard the sound of crunching twigs, before he had the sense of something looming nearby. He froze and, before he took the time to look, carefully zipped up his fly.

In horror movies, nothing ever happened until you looked. Not that a giraffe in bits of pink clothing was really all that terrifying, on its own --

But in this environment, Asher just froze, very still, not even willing to reach slowly for his weapon just yet.

Asher wasn't the only one hesitating with his weapon. Lucky for him, Davor hadn't walked in on his little potty break, either. He'd walked in on the giraffe, or as much as one could walk in on a creature like that. Rather, there was something in the trees and, unwilling to risk another squirrel attack, he meant to investigate first this time. It turned out to be a head rustling the branches. A head attached to a very, very long neck.

Davor froze as still as the trees around them, staring up at the giraffe. The giraffe! The giraffe, of all things, and it never really hit just how ridiculous they looked until there was one so casually browsing about five feet away. No offense. Actually, maybe there was some elegance to the creature, too, overshadowed by the cold fear he felt at a sneaking suspicion. Like maybe he recognized this giraffe...?

"Ernst," half question, half incredulous guess. Like a giraffe could hear him speaking so soft, all the way down there. It was, well, he'd become accustomed to looking for the ragged remains of clothes first. He could remember what Ernst was wearing, and he knew his symbol even if he still couldn't quite remember his god's name. This giraffe might be Ernst, and the war-hammer hung loosely in his hand. He didn't want to hurt Ernst, giraffe or otherwise.

Erica wasn't an expert on non-insect wildlife (not her interest) but it didn't take an expert in anything to know that giraffes did not belong in the swamp. It also didn't take a master of observation to see that a giraffe dragging around scraps of pink and teal clothing and wearing the sign of Dionysus was not actually a giraffe but a Chosen, Ernst in fact. Only he would become something so obvious and out of place. "Leave it to Ernst to become a giraffe. Too tall for his own good."

Erica walked past Davor with a quick jab of her elbow into his arm in greeting before getting down to business. Without any hesitation, she pulled back and sent an axe flying. It hit their friend with a satisfying thump. Erica grimaced a little; she wasn't heartless, but this was for Ernst's own good and she tried to enjoy everything she did.

"No point in hesitating now," she quipped. Anticipating Davor'a horror, Erica laughed and threw up a peace sign. "Ernst could do with losing a few inches anyways, so I say whack away."

If the giraffe was supposed to recognize any members of the little crowd, it didn't look like he did. He was just trying to munch on some leaves! And maybe shake some of these sticks out of his fur. So he could then proceed to eat those leaves.

He seemed wary of the newcomers, though. They didn't look like anything that belonged where he did, and he wasn't so sure that they belonged in this place, either. He munched slowly on his leaves and craned his head down to look - and then found himself skittering backwards clumsily, as an axe came flying toward him. It was fortunate that the Mark was still around his neck - the axe thudded into one of his back thighs, handle first, but it still hurt. If that had been the blade...

Well, giraffes didn't really understand blades. But it was still very clearly sharp. Ernst turned tail and began to run, as much as he could with the, you know, canopy in the way. Where was the open air of the savannah?

This is not a monster fight but a spar with any PC that has been turned into an animal. We suggest two Chosen per turned PC!

Turned PCs do damage based on their weapon weight. This means that base damage and bonuses match the standard weapons:

Balanced weapons, or weapons of a middling/average weight, do a base of 6 damage.
Agile weapons, or weapons that are small and light, do a base of 4 damage but give +1 to your hit roll.
Heavy weapons, or weapons that are big and heavy, do a base of 10 damage but give -1 to your hit roll.

However, in this case, PCs always attack first. Instead of rolling init, the class of your weapon is used to determine HP.

Turned PCs with Ranged weapons have 60HP.
Turned PCs with Melee weapons have 70HP.
Turned PCs with Defensive weapons have 80HP.

Once Turned PCs are brought down to 5HP or below, they can OOC choose to submit to capture -- aka, taken back to camp and kept safe until a solution to the problem can be found -- or run away, at which point they escape the thread and recover all HP for their next battle. Either way, all parties who participate in the thread get standard Spar XP: 10XP for completing the spar, and an additional 10XP if they hit 800 words.

Until PCs have been captured, they cannot participate in any kind of thread except this one. After capture, they can do PRPs or battles with other players, but still cannot speak.

"s**t, catch it...!" Asher didn't know Ernst -- had no idea if that was even a person, the name didn't register as a real name to him -- but he was sure that the crazy looking giraffe was not a normal sight in Louisiana. Now that there were other people around, he also had the sense to pull out his dagger and give chase, working to give Erst one good, solid smack before he got too far away.

It wasn't enough for Erica's elbowing to make Davor startle, flinching away from a whole 'nother threat at the moment. Her little comment, her eternally blasé attitude, the way she just threw her axes so easily at their mutual friend -- it was a different, cold sort of jab. Yes, he was afraid of this tiny woman. He shook his head at her, lightly but emphatically, before backing off.

Davor was both vindicated and mortified to see the giraffe formerly known as Ernst beginning to flee. Vindicated because see what you did, Erica? There were better ways to deal with with! But also, mortified, because s**t there was Asher running past him and giving the only sound advice they had left. He hesitated, just a moment. Gave Erica a look, then went after Ernst, uselessly carrying his conspicuously un-swung war-hammer.

Actually, Ernst stopped just about as soon as Asher's dagger smacked his leg - but if the group had had any illogical hope that he'd stay peaceful, they were unfortunately wrong. It took him a few seconds to turn himself around - size and long legs weren't everything if you weren't built for the environment. Once he did, though, he began running back toward the three Chosen, kicking up mud as he went - and swinging his neck wildly at Erica, his first assailant, as soon as she seemed to be within reach.

Yeah, it was definitely safe to say he didn't recognize them (not that he'd have recognized Asher specifically anyway, but Ernst wouldn't have charged toward him if he were in his right mind, regardless of whether he recognized the dude) - and at the moment he had no idea why they were chasing him, or trying to catch his attention. Ernst had just wanted to eat some leaves in peace!

Unfortunately for Davor, looks or the disapproval of others very rarely meant anything to Erica unless it was a criticism of the quality of her work. Seeing as her axe had hit her target quite solidly and he wasn't evaluating one of her illustrations, she didn't really see any reason to feel bad about throwing the axe. Since it was Ernst, there was no point in just letting him wander off when they could bring him in and keep an eye on him until they could get him a cure. Letting him continue to roam was just making it more difficult to get him back to just being an absurdly tall human instead of an absurdly tall non-human animal.

Running after the Chosen with the daggers, Erica couldn't have predicted that Ernst was going to go so quickly from running to attacking, but luckily swinging his head in such a large arc gave her some time to react (even if just enough to not die). He hit her with a solid thud even though she had preemptively begun falling away from his blow.

she muttered while pulling herself up off the ground. They had no business being so large and Ernst had no business being one With a shrug, a painful one--there was definitely going to be a huge bruise on her side in a few hours--she let an axe fly. Again, her aim was true. Wincing, she hefted up her other axe in preparation. "You know, your hammer is used for hammering not as a weight for your arm. Give Ernst a few good whacks would you? Knowing him and his long legs, he'll manage to wander himself out of this swamp if we just let him keep walking around."

"Erica, by the way,"
she said with a breezy, careless smile at the other Chosen. He had thrown his dagger so he could get an introduction. "Mr. Hesitant is Davor."

"We've met." It was dismissive, clipped -- and Asher didn't offer his own name like this was some friendly social event, when they were trying to control a vicious animal. No. Instead he threw himself at Ernst again, body slamming against his legs, trying to knock him off-balance.

Not that it worked. Asher wasn't exactly big. But maybe it made him buckle or fall. "You know this brute?"
