Saerun had rather liked working with Kaname on the science project, even though she never did get to meet them in person. When it came time to do the actual presentation, Kaname had been too sick to get out of bed, so she'd had to do it by herself. She didn't mind, though. Some things couldn't be helped, and she knew all to well that some Hallowed kids just didn't have the immune system that “normal” kids had. Still, she would've liked to have met them in person eventually.
Which was why she came to an abrupt stop upon entering the science class three weeks later when she spotted someone new. Someone with a facial mask. A Fallen kid that looked terribly sick... Was that..? She blinked a few times, wordlessly continuing through the doors toward her seat – thankfully no one else was around just yet. She always arrived early so she wouldn't have to deal with stares as she headed to the back of the class.

Kaname had felt terrible about being unable to help with the actual presentation. Saerun had said she didn't mind doing it on her own and wasn't mad, but still... The guilt was just awful. Eventually they'd managed to get healthy enough to leave the house again, but it was weeks after the fact and they hadn't really kept up with her online, either. It was a shame, she seemed really nice, and Kaname didn't really have many friends. Let alone mutated ones!
They'd been dropped off at science class early by their parent and were just setting up their notebook and textbook when someone else entered. They spared a glance up, then froze for a moment. Wow... They'd never seen anyone that looked like that before.. Wait, didn't Saerun say she had big teeth?
”Sssaerun...?” He wheezed out the question after she'd gotten close enough to potentially hear him.

She was trying not to stare, that was impolite, but she really wanted to know if this was Kaname. She'd never seen him before, after all. Kaname mentioned that he'd been sick all school year so that explained that, surely there weren't two kids that had been too sick to come to class even once... She didn't have to keep guessing, at least. The kid had definitely said her name, even if it was hard to hear and sounded like it took a lot of effort to say. She stopped in her tracks, then nodded. Would he understand her if she signed back? She tried it anyway.
'Are you Kaname?'
She decided to spell out his entire name this time...she'd make a little sign for him later, after they'd confirmed each other's identities.

It was! He smiled weakly behind his mask and nodded his head a little – just barely – too much motion would make him nauseous again. Maybe it was too early to leave the house.... but Zizi had said it wasn't going to do him any good to stay cooped up forever. He set his book down, then lifted his hands to reply.
'Yes, I'm Kaname. I got well enough to come to class finally.'
Hopefully she really wasn't mad about the presentation... they hadn't talked much online after it was over. Maybe she really didn't want to be friends after all? Oh, he hoped she did... It would be nice to have someone to talk to that he could actually see in person sometimes.

She blinked, watching him sign back slowly – like he wasn't very well practiced with signing but at least knew how to do it. It brought a small smile to her face, if only for a moment. He certainly didn't look well enough to be back in class. He had to wear a mask! And how was he carrying around those heavy books if he couldn't breathe well enough to talk?
'Its nice to meet you in person. I'm glad you're feeling better. Is this where you're supposed to sit?'
She glanced at the desk, then over to her own... which was three rows back- in the very back corner of the class. Normally that was just where she liked to be, but if she actually had a friend in class for once... Suddenly she wished she could sit up here, instead.

Kaname blinked, then realized he didn't actually know that... Zizi had just picked this spot for him and left to get to their own class. Frowning slightly, he shrugged his shoulders a little.
'I don't know. Zizi picked this spot, but they had to go to teach their class.'
Maybe Saerun would know... it was hard to miss a seat that was empty all year, right?
'Do you know where I'm supposed to be?'
There weren't any other students to ask, or even the teacher... it was too early for that, after all. Honestly Kaname wasn't sure how he was going to get to his next class... Zizi's class was longer than this one, after all.

She blinked, thinking as she tried to picture the room full... Where was an empty seat..? She couldn't think of one, which probably meant it was up front. Ugh. That was even worse.
'I don't... I think maybe it's up front because I can't picture it.'
She thought for a moment, frowning slightly. What if... they just moved Kaname to the seat next to her? The kid in that seat had been squirming and making faces at her all year- she was sure they'd take the opportunity to sit somewhere else.
'You can come sit next to me. I don't think my table partner will mind.'
She nodded, then shuffled forward to start putting his books back into his bag. Goodness, this was heavy. How on earth had he managed to carry this all the way here?

Oh... she didn't know after all. He was about to sign back that he'd just ask the teacher when she stated that he could come sit next to her. He blinked in surprise – wasn't that seat taken...? She did think that her partner wouldn't mind... He watched – reactions a little delayed – as she packed up his books for him.
'Okay Saerun. Thank you.'
He paused, considering asking her if she would mind carrying his bag for him – but she was already doing it. He started to scoot himself around to slide out of his chair, finding that his muscles ached with protest – but eventually managed to get into a good position to stand up. Ugh, this was so tiring...

Sae only nodded at the thanks, and heaved up his book bag to carry back to her desk. This really was too heavy... did he bring all of his textbooks?? Well, she supposed if he stayed home most of the time, he wouldn't be utilizing his locker... Still, this was too much for a sick kid to carry! She settled his book bag and her own down on the table, then turned to look back at Kaname... He seemed to be having a hard time even getting up from his chair. Was he really okay to be at school?
She scurried back over to him, waving to get his attention before signing:
'Here, I can help you.'
She then moved herself a bit closer, turning so that she was side-by-side with him before taking one of his arms and curling it over her shoulder, then looped one of her arm around his waist. She'd seen people do this in movies- so... this was the best way to help him walk to the desk, right? Kaname didn't seem to mind, so she helped him get back to their seats, then assisted with getting him into the actual chair.
'Are you sure its okay for you to be here? You might get even more sick. There's a cold going around right now, I had it last week.'
She climbed into her own chair and frowned, watching Kaname closely.

Kaname hadn't really expected her to come back and help him- let alone that way. He would've been fine with just a hand, maybe, but he supposed a full support made it easier for him to walk back with her. She was really nice... really nice... He'd have to tell Zizi about her later when they came to get him after classes were over.
Once situated, he tilted his head slightly at the question... Was he well enough to be out and about?
'I don't know. Zizi said it's not good to be cooped up forever, so since I can walk right now it was a good time to get out of the house.'
He could tell Saerun did not like that, her eyes narrowed and her pupils even shrank a little. He couldn't help but feel a slight flutter of nervousness in his stomach, but... Saerun was his friend, she'd literally just helped him to his desk. She wasn't going to do anything bad.
She was about to reply when the teacher came in, along with a bunch of students. Oh well... their talk would have to wait until after class.
