The pride seemed to be adjusting well to the idea that one day soon they'd have a new Queen and King, which was good. Na'al only wished that she was less nervous about that day. Considering the fact that she'd been co-opted into being the Heiress, the navy lioness couldn't blame her grandmother for insisting that there be cubs before she formally stepped down as Queen.

Na'al swore that she and Maji were trying, but, well, so far nothing. Way to make a girl feel like a failure, Grandmother.

The lioness was alone for the moment, something that had become relatively unusual ever since the announcement. Pridemembers had developed a tendency to come up to her for the most unusual reasons, but Na'al felt it was important to hear them out and do what she could to listen and help them. It just meant she had very little downtime once she left her den in the morning.

It seemed like it had been so long since the pride had last had a King, that Pingana had been waiting endlessly for another to be named.. and it was a relief when that day had finally come. It hadn't taken long to meet with the would-be King, though Pingana would remain distant and reserved until he truly ascended.. he had investigated the young lion's family and found much to like and only a little to dislike about it all. They would do just fine.

Na'al, on the other paw, was much more of a sure thing to him. She was the Queen's granddaughter and she was affected by the plague, she had already accepted her position. She would be Queen. And while it was unlikely that she would ultimately reject Maji before he could become King, still..

He had been watching, he knew the lady barely had time to herself but for his purposes he had to take advantage of one of the few times she was actually alone. A spy who did not value privacy was a poor spy indeed, but they would have to share in it this time.

"My lady," he called quietly, seemingly appearing out of nowhere but at a distance that would minimize any perceived threat (or so he hoped).

The lioness' head jerked up, jolted out of her reverie by the soft voice. Turning, her gaze fell upon a handsome and half-familiar lion. Unfortunately, she couldn't remember his name, though she was certain he'd been around since long before she was born.

"Good day," she greeted him in return. "Ah...you're a Scout?" the Heiress hazarded. Scouts were some of the more haphazardly seen members of the pride, considering that their patrols took them out to the borders for varying amounts of time. Plus the rank sounded correct when paired with this particular lion.

"I am," he confirmed with a small smile, approaching the heiress and stopping at a respectful distance before offering her a proper bow. He was nothing if not serious about his job, and while formality was not necessary around the pride in general, reporting to the King and Queen directly was something else.

"I was hoping to introduce myself properly," he said, straightening himself out, "My name is Pingana, I work as a Scout but in truth I am a Spy. I served Kings Modya'sezhai and Kiwi'lan, and I will be honored to serve King Maji."

After so long, it didn't feel right to leave out Nawiri'chiwa and to address Na'al while swearing loyalty to her King.. but that was how it worked, and he was glad to have that back again. Ultimately, it was all for the Queen and the Pride and he doubted she would forget that.

"Oh!" Na'al stared at the lion before her who was showing ever courtesy anyone could ask for, and speaking so softly and politely and yet she had not at all expected this. Oh yes, she'd known for some time now that Spies existed, but she hadn't thought to meet them, especially considering that Maji was the Royal Escort, one day soon to be King, and Spies would fall under his auspices.

"Well, I'm very happy to meet you. None of your, ah, fellows has come forward yet, so I didn't exactly expect this," she explained to Pingana. She wondered how many other Spies there were. There had to be more than one, but it couldn't be a large group, not if they were to maintain secrecy.

"I'm sure they will, my lady," he said with a smile, "We're eager to have a King once again but we have long served the Queen and we won't forget that. If there is ever anything you need, please don't hesitate to send word."

They were such a small group and there was so little of special interest to occupy their time of late.. Pingana hoped that that would change with a King, not that any proper pride member would wish for trouble, of course.

"There are only a few of us, though I'm surprised to be the first," he said thoughtfully, then shaking it off.

The lioness nodded her understanding. The more she thought about it, the more logical this conversation was. After all, the Spies were necessary, but it was vital that they not be revealed to the pride as a whole. They didn't need panic in the Kitwana'antara, after all.

"I suppose asking you who the others are would be cheating," Na'al offered with a mischevious twinkle in her eyes. In fact now that she was thinking in those terms, the lioness wondered if she might be able to figure out who the others were before they too came up to her. Or without asking Maji.

She tactfully didn't reply to Pingana's comment about being the first to introduce himself to her. Whatever the issue there, it was for the Spies and Maji to deal with. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

He chuckled at her question. Technically, there would be nothing wrong with outing his peers to the lioness who would be Queen, especially since they had already met with Maji. But as a rule, they tended not to talk about each other unless it was with the King.

"Yes," he answered with a chuckle, "If you can figure it out before they identify themselves, they aren't doing their job. I won't do that to them."

By his smile it was apparent he was only half-serious. She could ask and he might answer.. but what was the fun in that? He was curious about if she might try to get on her own and if she would succeed.

The Heiress chuckled in response. She hadn't expected a Spy to be so personable, but then it did make sense that he would be. After all, Pingana's best defense against being identified was in being a normal lion. If no one thought he had anything to hide, they wouldn't begin to suspect.

So if she did guess wrong (and here she made a mental note to not share her guesses with anybody else, just in case) she could be accidentally ostracizing somebody unjustly. Which would be bad.

"Well, I certainly appreciate your coming to me, Pingana, and I hope you and your comrades will be able to come to me or Maji as you need in the future," Na'al told the lion as she got to her feet.

"Thank you, my lady," he said politely, offering a slight bow of his head, "It was a pleasure to meet you."

It would not do to miss a polite end to a meeting, and the longer this took the worse it was for any spy. He'd made contact and accomplished his goal, that was all he needed. He was reassured by meeting the heiress, more confident now than he had been in some time. He had no complaints about the past but now he had greater hope for the future. It was a superficial conversation but it had great meaning for him.

Without another word, he stalked off- walking past her instead of returning the way he had come.
