Thorne was craving.

It was an idiots craving, something he should have ignored, walked away from, but he'd had a really bad week and he wanted a frosty. So of course it was outside of McDonalds where nothing was supposed to go awry or be supernatural or have anything do with Other Ashdown at all, that Thorne finds Lady.

He doesn't exactly realize it at first, too busy sticking one of those dumb see-through plastic spoons in his mouth and crunching down on the M&M's. It's not until he nearly runs into the tall redhead that he realizes he actually knows someone at the shitty McDonalds open at butt-a** PM at night and says, startled, "Lady? Here for the frosties too, or something aimed more towards clogging arteries?"

She just wanted some ******** french fries but like everything else in her shitty, awful life things just couldn't be like they were when she was last in the Real-Life Human World. No. Instead of talking to people she now had to somehow navigate a machine and there were ******** calorie counts everywhere and prices had changed so much and anyway that's how Lady ended up having a panic attack outside a McDonalds at 11:45PM at night. It was past curfew but she didn't even give a s**t. There was no space left in her head for shits to give. She was caught up giving shits about completely different stuff like apparently having a doctorate in folkloric studies.

So, anyway, she was focused on her complete mental breakdown over french fries when Thorne literally stumbled over her. This didn't hurt, even though it maybe should've, mostly because he stopped right before making contact.

Lady took a minute to try to inhale before trying to talk, but all she ended up doing was choking out a miserable cough. This happened twice more before she finally managed, "I don't ******** know how to ******** order," and then put her face back on her knees and tried breathing through her hands again.

Thorne blinked at Lady. It was kind of stupid, considering he had one of those dumb see through not-spoons stuck in his mouth and was crunching away at the M&M's on it, but as soon as he noticed something wrong he pulled it out of his mouth and lowered his frosty.

"Hey," he said gently, wryly, patting Lady on the arm softly. "I had a freak out in starbucks last week, don't sweat it. What do you want?"

He jammed his finger at the machine.

"I'll buy. Have you ever dipped french fries in frosties? It's disgustingly good and I don't know how I still have anything to boast about when I secretly spend my nights eating taco time."

He thumbed a soft pattern along her arm and dropped his hand.

"Want to order a ton of junk food and rant to me about life for awhile?"

"There's a ******** Starbucks here?" Thorne's assurance maybe doesn't work out the way he wants it to. Starbucks is like... A Salem thing. A Boston thing. It has no place in Ashdown, Massachusetts. It's an invader. Lady looks at him miserably, and then nods. Her full-out teen gangliness is more obvious than ever when she stands up, long-limbed and two inches taller than Thorne. "I just wanted to get French fries," she says, miserable, so ******** miserable. "I have... I have stupid homework. For tutoring. So I can go back to school."

Which sucks.

"Um," Thorne says, because he doesn't know how to say he was craving a pumpkin spice latte so bad and he was feeling so awful about his life choices that he'd driven at least three towns over to find one, "I. Found one. I had a craving, it was bad."

He scrubs the back of his head, rubbing miserably at it and staring back at her with that same reflected distress. But he can't help laughing at how tall she actually is.

He flicks his fingers over the weirdo machine until they have an order for fries (and like. a mcflurry because ******** it) and doesn't let Lady pay.

He turns to look at her with a mild expression of amusement.

"Want help?" he asks.

"I've got tutors," says Lady. "Buncha old people." Not old people like Thorne. Thorne Got It, didn't he? "I don't even want to go back to school. What's the point? I don't have any of the stuff you need, I'm fake." At least Thorne gets to go back to his life, as messed up as it might have been. Lady doesn't even know where to begin becoming Tate again, if she even could. "I mean, if you're any good at English or history, I suck at everything that's not math."

She finds a table for them, one of the booths in the way back corner. It's entirely weird to be ordering at the McDonalds and going to sit down and wait for her food. Why is this happening to her?

"I had a panic attack in the mall the other day," she says. "Over a shirt."

"Sounds boring," Thorne responds and sits with Lady, shucking off his coat and stretching his arms above his head. "You're not a fake. You're here, after all," he points out, glancing up at her, "What do you want to do then?" He returns to his McFlurry, examining a spoonful of M&M's and icecream. "I've heard I'm damn good at bullshitting papers when I put my mind to it, and I know an unhealthy amount about the Napoleonic wars, but that might be it."

He tugs a french fry free once they get their food and sticks it in the McFlurry.

"a*****e shirt," he responds, mildly. "I can't even go into malls right now. Too many people."

"It's okay if I go with Aleksy," she says. "He's my brother. I'm four minutes older than him. Only I guess... not anymore." Lady shrugs and sticks four fries in her mouth at once. Her Melany-taught manners are gone. But she'd never tried to fight like Thorne and Shiloh had, it'd all been a grand adventure until suddenly it wasn't anymore.

"I used to write music," she tells Thorne. "I sing, sometimes. I mean, all the time. I wanted to do something with that. She used to have me sing for her while she worked. She said I was good at it. I can play the violin and the piano and the guitar..."

"Timeline ******** sucks," Thorne says, inelegant, and starts on a second McFlurry, scooping a fry through it and sticking it in his mouth. "I used to think three months was nothing, but now I'm here and it feels like a world of difference."

He listens intently as Lady speaks, head tilted, eyes bright.

"You could go to university for it," he says, and pops another fry into his mouth, "I'd love to hear you sing sometime. And I've heard you on the piano. You're really good."

He smiled. "Just do whatever makes you feel like you."

"Four minutes older and nine years younger," says Lady gloomily. "I mean, I could do anything for three months, this just feels like excessive."

She shrugs. "I was never very good at school," she says. "If I was gonna make music into, like, my job I'd probably just do it." Thorne still nets a smile at the compliment. "Maybe I'll play you one of my songs sometime, once I find a piano." Or bought the shitty $60 Casio keyboard she'd seen in an electronics repair shop window. That and a pair of earbuds and she could be in business...

Another mouthful of fries, and she says, "So like, what's up with you and my brother?" Like that was any kind of sensible segue. Really Lady just wanted the attention off her and onto Thorne. "He spent like three days freaking out 'cause he hadn't seen you or something."

"It really does," Thorne agrees, but doesn't push the subject further because he doesn't quite know how.

He chews the tip of his see-through not-spoon as she speaks, watching as she tells him things that he knows he cannot help with.

"Yeah," he says, "I understand that. Why don't you, then?" He smiles fondly at Lady. "I think I'd like that. Let me know if you ever need help finding one. Or moving one. I've heard I'm good for both."

He blinks at the question, his eyes widening a fraction at the curiosity in her tone and the fact that he can understand exactly what she says.

"Oh, um," Thorne starts, inarticulate because he really doesn't know how to act at 11:45PM at night in a McDonalds with a girl who's been stuck in another dimension for nine years.

"We're - friends?"

That sounds like a cheap way of explaining it. Like it doesn't even do what he feels towards Aleksy justice. He rubs the back of his neck, tapping a spoonful of McFlurry into his mouth.

"I didn't know he freaked out for three days," he says, full of guilt, and looks at her, "I don't know. I really care about him. I'd do anything for him, really. I don't know what that is, if anything, but that's it."

"I gotta," she says, "have you seen Lyoshka? He's knee high to a grasshopper." Lady tries the fries-in-the-ice-cream thing. It's alright, she decides, so she does it again. "I dunno. I'm glad you're friends." She has a dimple in one cheek when she smiles, a trait she doesn't share with her brother at all. "Don't tell him I told you. He'll be pissed."

She goes back to her fries. The set of her shoulders is looser now. This is more like what she remembers, though in Melany's household they would have been working, doing something--meals were taken in silence if they were taken in a group at all--and now they were just. Here. "He likes you too," she says. She's a little jealous. Sure, she knew Aleksy first, but Thorne, oh, Thorne knows her brother as he is now. Not as he was almost a decade ago, when he was younger and angrier. "A lot."

Lady has finished her fries. She breaks down the pouches, flattening them between her palms. "He shaved his head once when we were fifteen," she says, "With, like, a razor like girls use for their legs. It used to be down to like, here." She gestures around the small of her own back. "Father was pissed. I kind of was, too, since he didn't let me help." She touches her own hair self-consciously. It's a fair river of copper-red, brighter than her brother's and straight as a pin. But the sides and back are shaved. She palms at the fuzz there: it's getting long. "I don't know what to do about my hair," she says. "She always picked it for me. The style.

"Lace says she's not dead. That she's in the human world, right now." Lady doesn't shudder. She's quite still: a fawn faced with an unknown predator. "I'm scared I'll see her if I go somewhere alone, and--I was with her for so long, what if I just--I'm scared."

"He is tiny," Thorne remarks once he realizes she is speaking of Aleksy, and grins. He continues to suck on his spoon, thorough before he goes back for more. "I am too," he says honestly, the fondness in his tone acute, "but I promise your secret is safe with me."

He nips at the edge of his spoon, restless as is usual for him, and leans his cheek against the knuckles of his right hand as she speaks, watching her with curiosity. "I'm glad," he says, tentative, and drops his gaze to the splay of fries at their table. "Sometimes I wonder if I'm any good for him. After all - I disappeared from his life, I wasn't even there for him those three months."

He watches her break down the boxes and eats away the last of his McFlurry, his tongue sweeping the hollow of his cheek for remnants.

"I can't even imagine Aleksy at fifteen," Thorne replies, tilting his head, "How rude of him not to ask you for help." He pauses, wonders, eyes flicking to Lady. There are so many things he asks, so many things he does not know about the twins. For as close as he is to Aleksy, his past is a jagged thing and Thorne does not sweep his fingers over it unless permitted. Does not push, or ask, because it would never chase him away, but he would not be the dog to hound Aleksy into a corner. "Can you not ask him now?"

He pauses though, his breath stilling in his throat, and he turns his eyes to the darkened exterior of the window, fear hungering at his throat.

"She's not," he says, raw and animal, "She's alive. They rescued her. They let her live." His eyes fall back to Lady, telling a tale of a someone without the body, the soul anymore to forgive. "But I won't let her take you - she has done enough to you. No more. Not again. I am afraid too - of all the things she can do. Not to me, but to the people I love."

He bows his head.

"I think sometimes that I see her. In coffee shops, on the street. Sometimes I think she'll never stop haunting me. But you aren't alone."

"It'd be so easy to go back," says Lady. "Sometimes I think I want to go back. It was... fun, for a while. I, you know, someone cared about me and where I was going and how my education was. She loved me."

She doesn't say It was fake because Thorne knows.

"Do you think Aleksy would help me with my hair?" She plays with it, still, tying tiny and complicated knots in the copper locks. Her knuckles go white as she pulls the strands of her hair tight. "I, um. I can't do it by myself." There's a question inherent in that: will you help me. But, like a true Spektor, she doesn't have the nerve to ask.

Lady does reach across the table to ruffle Thorne's hair. "You're not alone," she repeats back to him. "I won't let her get you."

"I know," Thorne says, "I know. I think it too. Not because she was ever kind to me, but..." He gestures. How did you say that you missed the rigid structure of everything? The rules that he'd always broken, the structure that had disallowed for his own free will? The safety of it, because if he did something wrong, it was always, always to be traced back to him and no one else?

Thorne exhales and laughs, and it's a gentle, warm sound of pleasure.

"I think so," Thorne responds, mild, and grins at her, "But I'll always be here too, if you need to tag-team it." The offer is invisible, but it stands true in the air. Whatever Lady needs from him, he's willing to give it to her.

"Thanks," he rumbles, bowing his head to Lady's ruffle, "I would hate to leave you alone again."

He looks up smiling, crooked and warm.

"Anyways, who else would I have to eat absolute junk food with me at midnight?"
