Briiva was sitting by the remains of the nights campfire, sitting cross-legged with a pad of graphing paper across her lap. Her bow sat beside her with the quiver propped up should she need to draw them quickly, but for the most part she felt fairly safe where she was. She also had a little lookout in Arthur; his senses as a raccoon were far better than hers, and she was confident that he would alert her to any threat to them.
She threw her furry friend a piece of the granola bar she had been snaking on and turned her attention back to her pad, where she had been drafting bow designs. Her current great bow was made of lovingly crafted wood and was an exquisite example of a traditional recurve, but she found herself getting tired of the effort required to keep such a bow drawn.
There were a few crumpled up balls of paper beside her already, as Briiva tried to narrow down what she was going for in the weapon. Truthfully, she would have to do a lot more research before her doodling graduated to anything more. Still, right now it proved as a distraction, which Briiva could sorely use.

Asher hovered over her left shoulder. Maybe it wasn't intentionally the most annoying thing ever, that sensation of someone just a little too close, eyebrows knitted in concentration as he tried to steal a look at her paper. Or maybe it was, this being Asher, who seemed to regard every social interaction as a test of just how far he could push before someone could push back. Either way, it was more than a little rude, and peppered -- at least a bit -- with genuine curiosity. He didn't say anything, not immediately. Just hovered. Breathing a bit more than required through his mouth.

If Briiva had noticed Asher's presence, she certainly didn't seem compelled to acknowledge it. It was possible that she had gotten distracted in her drafting however, as rather than continue on the bow, she had started doodling what could only be interpreted as a rocket propelled arrow. Halfway through the drawing, Briiva gave out a frustrated sigh, balled the piece of paper up, and tossed it over her left shoulder. As the paper bounced off Asher and landed a bit farther away, Briiva gave a puzzled look to her left, only to jump backwards and directly into him in surprise. WC: 100 Total: 304

It landed on his toe, and his response was less than controlled: a quick <********> under his breath and a shove that was harder than necessary to get her off of him, while Asher hopped off his foot and, finally, dropped down to sit on the log instead. His foot still throbbed, Asher hissing a breath in and out through his teeth as he glared up at her. At least he bit back the immediate insults, just waiting for the pain to ebb enough so he could think.

Briiva made a rather undignified "Eep!" as both her and her raccoon pal were shoved forward. She felt her balance fail, but decided better than to grab hold of her aggressor and make sure that both of them found themselves in the dirt. Besides, she had her hands full with her friendly raccoon Chosen. Briiva dropped her shoulder and rolled rather than let herself flop onto the ground, letting her body splay on the ground after completing the maneuver. Rather than jump up and accost Asher however, she burst into a full throated laugh, looking up towards him and giving a large upside-down grin. "You know, there are better ways to get a girl in your arms that don't end up with them b***h smacking you across that grumpy mug ya got going on." WC: 136 Total: 440

"You're less girl than charging rhinoceros." It was indignant -- thoughtless, not very nice. Asher set to stripping off his shoe, just to make sure nothing was broken, shooting her nasty looks between each step of the process. If this was his fault, he'd never admit it. Instead, he was more than happy to heap the blame. By now his toe barely even hurt anymore. It was the principle of the thing. "How can you be so completely unaware of everything around you?"

Briiva squinted, watching Asher meticulously examine his foot, taking the opportunity to right herself. "I would be more frightened of a girl charging at you though, because that would mean that you have really ******** something up." Dusting herself off, Briiva stooped down to pick up Arthur, patting him free of dirt as well. She took her time, and only until Arthur had relaxed and snuggled himself into the crook of her arm did she bring her eyes back to his in acknowledgement. "You do know that that argument has nothing to stand on right? I'm not a prey animal, I don't have a 360 degree field of vision. it is literally impossible to be aware of everything around me, especially someone who was standing completely out of my vision, stooped over me without even announcing himself. It's almost as if you think that everyone should be aware of where you are and what you are doing at all times." Briiva couldn't help the coy smile that was spreading across her face, so she didn't try. "I'm sorry, but if you were really so important, I would already know your name. I'm Briiva." That same smirk plastered across her face, she held out her hand. She doubted he would take it, but the offer was there regardless.

He didn't full on snub her, at least; instead he gave her hand a flat look as he set about putting his sock and shoe back on, slowly, obviously too busy for things like shaking. Asher's hands were full. He couldn't take hers. It was a simple fact. "I definitely know when someone's behind me. If I didn't, I would get hit by cars every ten minutes." He set to the laces, too, shaking his head and looking down, eyebrows knitted. "We have more senses than just what we can see in our field of vision. It's how we survived all the other predators trying to take us out." One last sharp tug tied them off. And then -- and only when she'd given up and lowered her own hand -- did he offer her his. "I'm Asher. And I'm not oblivious."

"Yes, but cars are rather loud, and you tend to be on alert for them when you are ever putting yourself in a situation to be around them." Briiva's smile barely flickered; it was almost as if she was enjoying herself. She took Asher's hand and gave it a firm, pleasant shake before letting go. "Also, we survived as a species by coordinating in groups, inventing tools, learning to cultivate so that we could actually settle down. It's intelligence ingenuity and close-knit communities that allowed us to rise above our humble hunter-gatherer origins to a point where we don't have to rely on predatory instincts to survive, and can focus on more the more important things in life, like being assholes to each other." Briiva paused to briefly collect her journal and papers before standing back up to face him, smirking. "Of course you're not Oblivious. You just told me your name is Asher."

"Whereas you told me your name, but all I can think is Clueless." He took his own hand back, swiping it on his hand -- and shooting a look around them, a frown on his face, to see if anyone else was within earshot. Not so much; probably for the best. He'd made a somewhat embarrassing sound. He still looked grumpy as his eyes resettled on her. "What were you doodling?"

Briiva did her best to stifle the laugh that threatened to bubble up, but only managed to make it more of a snerk at Asher's insult and subsequent topic change. She thumbed through a couple of her pages, reviewing her own work. "I'm just trying to get a feel for what kind of bow I want to make. I'm trying to get on paper kind of an initial prototype for a compound bow, which is currently restricted to my admittedly limited knowledge of bows. None of the individual concepts are really that complicated, but combining them all into a pulley system that uses physics to hurl a bladed stick with lethal force; Not exactly something I expected to turn up in my curriculum." She turned her most recent work towards Asher to inspect. It was definitely a bow, though the page had almost as much math on it as drawing. "It's a fun little side project so far. I love building things from the ground up, even if the trial and error process can be frustrating." Total WC: 887

He could, apparently, take some things serious: could look at what she'd done and, without any kind of judgement, acknowledge that she seemed to have some kind of skill there. His frown wasn't hostile, now, but curious. His eyebrows knitted just a little with some thought. "Is this what you did? I mean, before." One hand rolled, to take in the scribbles on the page. He could make sense of it, just barely. He could recognize a weapon in the drawings. "Like, for money."

"I'm actually still in school." Briiva's grin turned slightly sheepish, taking back her journal. "I'm majoring in space propulsion, specifically engine design and fabrication. Hopefully, once I graduate there will be enough interest still in the private sector for space travel that I'll be able to find a job." Her expression flickered, if just for a moment before being replaced once more with her normal smile. "Space travel is the future of humanity, I can't see working towards any other goal then the possible preservation of our race, you know? Besides, the idea that I might find something that can become a backbone for something greater is always a nice thought, even if that is all it is going to be."

"That sounds like sci fi." It was his usual dismissive attitude, but with a begrudging kind of admiration behind it. He shifted in place, any memory of his aching foot now completely driven away by the conversation. It must not have been all that bad in reality, for him to have given up the game on it so quickly. "Seems like you'd be more useful doing that than here." His tone faded slowly to something thoughtful, head tipped to the side to take in the campsite around them. "Unlike most of us. Kills my theory we were just fodder."

"A lot of it still is, but hopefully I can help make at least one part of that reality, you know?" Briiva set her bag down, giving Arthur an errant pat on the head before looking back at Asher. "I haven't met anyone yet who I would consider fodder. There are a lot of ways that someone can change the world around them, and most will be pretty subtle at it. That could be something as big as discovering some new medicine or piece of technology, or it could be just serving as an inspiration to those around you, or making something seemingly inconsequential that someone re-purposes in a way that makes it revolutionary. When 3-D printers first came out, they were mostly just designed to make little plastic toys and models. Now we're looking at using them to print entire replacement organs. Sometimes changing the world requires someone finding the right cog to suddenly make the bigger picture fall into place." Briiva smiled up at him, seeming to harbor no resentment to the somewhat bumpy introductions. "Besides, aren't we all here to more fully realize our potential? You almost never realize how big something you do is until after you've done it and you have the chance to step back and see the effects it has."
