A soft tapping on a window woke Shiloh up early from his normal sleeping time. Working nights and having a class or two in the day had him sleeping until 4 P.M. at times, but the breeze that was aggressively knocking a tree branch against his apartment's window woke him up far earlier, at around 11. He didn't mind that much at all, days where the wind was just pushing everything around were always his favorite. And though he normally stayed in his room when not in class or at work, he found himself traveling out to the park in the quiet fall daylight. With his homework in hand, he found a nice, slightly shady spot ant sat down, getting to work.
He really, REALLY shouldn't have let himself zone out, because before he knew it, he was knocked right over, a small, warm body taking him to the ground. The young man was far too surprised to have screamed, but he did panic as a large amount of drool starting piling up on his face, and the feeling of a rough and wet tongue was present all over.
It was a dog. Having realized this, Shiloh sat up, gently pushing the beast away. After a moment of rubbing the spit and general dog grossness off of his face, the dog was way more well received as the lad began to ruffle her head and ears.
"Down poochie, hehe... Where'd you come from?" Animals were so much more pleasant to deal with than people were, and maybe just a part of him hoped that she didn't have an owner... A pet of his own would be nice. Unfortunately, the fact that she had a collar own indicated that she DID live with someone else. Shame...wuthering gee Finally, a Post for you! I am a faster Tagger than I am a starter! OTL

Murphy did, in fact, have an owner. Somebody who took her out to run every morning before breakfast and every evening after dinner. She had all of her shots, and was never fed scraps from the table. She was a great big brindle pitbull with a gentle spirit and more friends in the park than Dorian had ever had in his life. He hadn't adopted her to meet people, but that was what had happened. Dog people were like parents of small children - they liked to talk about their dogs. To give advice. To arrange play dates. Dorian thought it was all both wonderful and exhausting. He was embarrassed when he caught up to Murphy, who'd launched herself at somebody that they had never met before. "I'm sorry," he said, flushed in the cheeks but not out of breath, stooping to reconnect her leash to her collar. "I know she looks big, but she's harmless." Dorian pulled Murphy off of Shiloh, murmured soft scoldings under his breath. "She's usually better trained than that, I promise." Murphy sat at Dorian's feet, a smile on her pretty face, tongue lolling out. He crouched to rub her chest. Stared apologetically at Shiloh. "Pitbulls get a bad rap, but she's a good dog."

When the owner of the adorable Murphy did arrive, Shiloh seemed far too relaxed having the dog in his arms to feel his normal social anxiety pop up and come over him. Instead he smiled, almost reluctant to let the happy pup go.
"It's alright, really..." He said softly, smiling more towards the dog than to the man who addressed him. It wasn't until the man crouched down, meeting him eye to eye did Shiloh finally look at him, noticing his stare. Naturally his own cheeks reddened and he scrambled back up into a proper sitting position.
"S-she is a good dog!" Finally finding his voice again, he squeaked out a reply, reaching out to once again scratch behind her ears. "What's um... May I ask, what's her name?"

"Murphy," said Dorian, "Her name is Murphy." Murphy turned her head in the direction his voice. She was still smiling, tongue out, breath coming in strong and even pants. Dorian liked the way they felt against his palm. She was so strong - built like a brick house, but with the grace and agility of a horse. Dorian returned to a standing position once it was clear that the other man had not been injured by his fall. He cleared his throat, uncertain about the flush on Shiloh's cheeks, but unprepared to dwell on it too deeply. "I'm Dorian," he said, leaning forwards and extending his for Shiloh to take. "Let me help you up."

"Murphy." Shiloh echoed back, smiling at the dog before him and reaching to give her head another little rub. What an unusual name for a dog... It made him wonder why she was named like that, but he decided that it was not his place to question it. Murphy was a nice, strong name, either way, and certainly seemed to fit her.
Dorian's throat clearing made him change his gaze from Murphy back up to the other, and he graciously too the other's hand, rising to his feet then dusting off his pants and shirt. He was used to being rather grimey from work, but this was the first time in a long time he got a bit dirty on his days off. And he had decided to wear white today... Shame...
"I'm Shiloh, and thank you." He said simply before looking down at Murphy again. Normally larger dogs made him fidgety these days, given the youma attacks and general easily startledness of his own self, but not Murphy. Maybe it was because she really did just seem harmless.
"How long have you had her for...? And how old is she?"

"I adopted her when she was a puppy a couple of years ago. I used to volunteer at the humane society. We've been inseparable ever since." Conversation and sharing were easy when it was about something he loved as much as he loved Murphy - who used to chew on his shoes and s**t on his floor, but who had grown into a strong and intelligent and remarkably well behaved teddy bear. Even if he did say so himself. Next to Shiloh there rested something that looked like homework. "Were you studying? I'm sorry if we interrupted you." Murphy sniffed around the base of a nearby tree, leash stretching between her collar and Dorian's hand. He looped it around his wrist for extra security.

Even now, Shiloh could not seem to take his eyes off of Murphy. Dogs were very fascinating in many ways, but especially so in their endless curiosity and the affection they held for their caretakers. Murphy, despite her early attempts to mow down the nervous young man, seemed content in her ways, sniffing about without a care in the world.
"Oh! You used to volunteer there? When I was in college I did so too, up until I moved out of a reasonable distance to travel by bus... I always wondered what would have happened if I had been able to keep a dog or two, there were certainly some that would have quickly become my best friends." His tiny, second story apartment building in the more run don part of the city was no place to keep a pet... But that was alright in the end. He didn't have the money to care for himself, let alone another friend who would be by his side...
The question about his studies were unexpected, though, and he picked up a sadly doggy drool drenched series of paper that he had scribbled all over with notes and thoughts.
"O-oh, um... It's just the first draft of a paper I was writing for my computers class... It's fine, I wasn't very far on it, anyway.."

The state of Shiloh’s paper - soaked in Murphy’s drool- made Dorian wince. Even though Shiloh said it was fine. He wasn’t very far on it, but still. Murphy was well trained, and usually well-behaved, and it was always something of an embarrassment for him when she forgot herself. He’d taken pains since he’d brought her home to make sure she knew what was appropriate and what was not. We don’t growl at strangers - whether they’re dogs or people.
We don’t chase bicycles, or skateboards, or cars.
We don’t bark when somebody knocks on the door - we bring them something from the toybox to say hello.
We don’t slobber on somebody else’s homework. “I’m sorry about that,” he said, because he wasn’t sure what else to say. Dorian rubbed the back of his neck. “If you’re really interested in adopting a dog in the future, I can’t recommend it more. She makes my life better everyday. If you’re still in school it is probably wise to wait, though. She takes up most of my free time.” He did not say it like it was a bad thing.

"Really, don't feel bad about it, okay?" Shiloh's smile continued to be warm and almost a little shy. Various bits and pieces of cheesy lines from movies danced through his head to say, nothing that he'd ever say out loud, but he still thought of it at times. It seemed such a cliche... Not a disliked one, however.
"Maybe Murphy just knew I wanted to meet someone knew, o-or um... That I wouldn't mind some company... I think dogs have that special second sense, you know..?" The more Dorian spoke of his dog lovingly, the more Shiloh found himself wanting his own little friend.. Someone who wouldn't judge him, someone who would stay by his side... It would be perfect for the otherwise constantly shy and scared young man.
"I think you're right... I have another year or so of school... Maybe then I can get a dog... For now.. I um... I wouldn't mind having a friend with a dog, i-if you don't mind seeing me again some time when I'm not bombarded with homework.."

'Maybe Murphy just knew I wanted to meet someone knew, o-or um... That I wouldn't mind some company... I think dogs have that special second sense, you know..?'Dorian's gaze followed Murphy around the base of the tree while Shiloh talked. He was listening, though, and privately agreed. To both Murphy and Rocket - a silver tabbycat with a mischeivous streak- Dorian played both caretaker and dad. He walked the dog and cleaned the kitty litter. Only ever bought premium pet food. Still, both of them did more for Dorian than he knew he could ever do for them. 'I wouldn't mind having a friend with a dog, i-if you don't mind seeing me again some time when I'm not bombarded with homework..'Dorian's gaze flickered from Murphy to Shiloh. He did not respond immediately. Is he hitting on me? You're such a narcisist - this thought came right after the first, and felt to Dorian to be more likely. Shiloh had said that he wanted a friend with a dog, not a boyfriend with a dog. He smiled. "Sure, uh, let's exchange numbers." Dorian reached into his pocket for his cellphone. Stiffened when he realized he could not find it. He looked over his shoulder, back at the way that he had come. "... I seem to have misplaced my phone." A pause. And then - "I'll just have to give you my number, then, and you can call me."

The very thought that his words might have been seen as flirting never once crossed Shiloh's mind. He spoke in earnest, always, but it was more than unlikely that anything he said was to be taken as more than what they literally were. His smile turned a little confused when Dorian stayed quiet, worrying that maybe that was the wrong thing to say. Had his words implied he'd rather be friends with Murphy rather than Dorian? That would have been terribly rude!
For a moment, Shiloh looked uneasy, but it was easily pushed away once Dorian offered to share numbers. A soft laugh escaped his lips at the other's fumbling and only shook his head, pulling out his own and sending a short 'hello' to the number provided. Satisfied with that, he turned his phone around, offering the screen for the other to look at.
"There... All sent. Um... I have classes to finish up... And work most days, but I'd be happy to do my studying out here every now and then. Next time I'll sit at one of the park benches though. Just incase a happy friend decides to come up to me unannounced." There was no malice behind his words, in fact it seemed his words were laced with a pleasant joy at the whole situation.
After a moment of going over and giving Murphy a soft pat on the head, Shiloh waved his goodbyes, decided that maybe the library would be a better place to study.
"I suppose I'll talk to you later then... Do take care okay? Both of you."
