It seemed like only yesterday when he had first declared his... intense... like... for Eziya atop one of the shelled Matori beasts, not unlike the one standing in front of him now. A bushi. Such a strange name for such an alternately imposing and gentle creature.
Serr circled the animal, attention piqued. He hadn't been looking for any wandering familiars, in fact, he had been searching for earthlings to practice ripping off when he'd found this bushi, but maybe he could kill two sailscales with one stone. The man they had paid to ride one of these things had presumably tamed it somehow, and it stood to reason that he might too, given enough time. Once he had one under his sway he could sell it, or turn it around and charge people to ride it, just as he had been.
Okay. How to begin? The creature was watching him, which definitely gave him a disadvantage on the sneaking front. Serr nodded at the bushi, breaking eye contact to leisurely walk behind it. As he'd hoped, the animal lost interest almost immediately, leaving him plenty of opportunity to hop onto its back... which he did.
Serr wrapped well-muscled arms around the bushi's neck and pulled, but if that had any effect, he couldn't see it. The beast continued to stand, stock still, even lowering its head to graze while he was still attached. Maybe it would have been better to entice it with kindness or food.
Eventually, the bushi decided the fun and games had ended. With a mighty swing of its neck, it unceremoniously threw Serr into the dirst and trundled off. The Leaf scowled but didn't follow.
There would be a rematch another day.
