Though Sanidine was busy with his life--and researching youma, he liked to take the opportunity to spend as much time with Evan as he could. It seemed like the feeling was mutual, and the youma was bounding behind him, occasionally bumping into his ankles and sometimes eagerly just running a few feet ahead of him before quickly circling and returning to Sanidine's side.
They weren't up to anything bad; Sanidine just liked the idea of getting Evan out of the Rift. It was a nice enough night--and Evan was taking advantage of it. Sanidine didn't mind-until Evan scurried around a corner before Sanidine could clear it.
Sanidine hastened his step to catch up with him, but Evan had already skidded to a stop in surprise just a few feet from some civilian.

Emily was just on her way home, her weekly tote bag full of new books to read swinging from her hand. Honestly, that was just one of her favorite perks of being a librarian, she always got first pick of the new books, and took advantage of that fact. Well, this week she was quite excited about her haul, and was hurrying home to begin reading when…
Some sort of creature crossed her path…was it a cat? A dog? Some hybrid of the two?
If this was some sort of new creature…well, that was kind of cool.
Slowly, Emily crouched down, holding out a hand to Evan, crooning softly. “Hey there…kitty? Pupper? Catdog? Whatever you are, you’re quite cute aren’t you?”
Silently, Emily cursed herself for not having any sort of tuna or something with her…she had been wanting to get a cat for the library…it might help to draw in patrons. “Come here kittydog, I won’t hurt you.”

Evan stared up at her, golden eyes wide and afraid and filled with worry. He hesitated and looked over his shoulder; Sanidine hadn't caught up yet, and there was some need for some sort of physical affection. Sanidine was so focused on his work that he was feeling a bit starved of it.
Cautiously, Evan scooted closer and eyed her hand. It took him a moment to make up his mind, but his stubby little tail suddenly wagged and he pressed the top of his head into the palm of her hand.
Sanidine was muttering to himself as he rounded the corner and paused, looking down at the two.
"...What's going on here?"

Emily smiled and stroked Evan’s head, silently squealing in delight. “Yeah, there you go kittypup. I’m not going to hurt you. You’re so nice and soft and so cuddly!” She paused when Sanidine came onto the scene and frowned slightly, eyes going over him and his…outfit.
“Um…” Was he from a comic book convention or something? Maybe he was trying to advertise for a new batman villain? Had she missed something new? Quickly she tried to wrack her brain to figure out if she had missed something, because if she had, she would have to run an event at the library….she couldn’t waste an opportunity to reach out to the teens.
Her hands gently pulled Evan closer. Honestly, something about this guy kind of gave her the creeps.
“Nothing. What’s going on with you?” For some reason, the hair was standing up on the back of her neck.

Evan turned quickly to look at Sanidine, surprised and guilty that he'd been caught letting some stranger pet him. He looked up at Sanidine with a worried expression and almost seemed to cower closer to the stranger. He didn't want to get in trouble but knew he wasn't doing a very good job of 'serving the Negaverse'...or whatever. He just liked to be close to Sanidine and run around.
Still, he was utterly surprised when the girl wrapped her arms around him and pulled him closer. Curiously, he sort of flopped backwards and looked up at her--and then quickly back at Sanidine. His tail flopped on the ground, twice, as he wagged weakly.
Sanidine gave Evan a judgmental look and seemed a mixture of relieved and stressed. On one hand, no one was hurting Evan. On the other hand, it looked like some girl was trying to abduct him.
"...That's mine," he said, nodding towards Evan. "I'd appreciate if you took your hands off him. We have places to be."

Emily pulled Evan up into her arms and held him close, narrowing her eyes. Well, this seemed like an animal abuser if she ever saw one. “If I took my hands off of him? The poor thing looks scared to death of you, why don’t you back off and go back to whatever comic convention you came from? I’m not going to let you hurt this poor thing.”
…Even though she still wasn’t sure just what it was…it was cute. And fluffy…and scared looking.
“I’m not going to let this mean guy have you little kittypup…” The words were whispered right to Evan, as Emily stood, holding on firmly to the little yoma. “I’m going to take good care of you and I won’t let anything or anyone hurt you anymore.”
She looked back up to Sanidine, voice firm. “I’m taking it. You should just be thankful that I’m not reporting you to the humane society for animal cruelty, letting the poor thing run around with no collar or anything. You should be ashamed.”

Evan blinked and though he was certain that Sanidine was going to be furious with him, there was a part of him that very much enjoyed being close to someone. Her arms felt like a hug and, despite himself, his little tail started wagging and he lifted his head to lick at her cheek.
She tasted sweet, in a way Evan hadn’t ever thought people tasted before. But the energy that was just dripping off of her made him feel suddenly dehydrated, and he licked again, as if that was the way to quench his thirst.
Sanidine seemed far less interested, though. His lip twitched and for a split second he thought about summoning his weapon and attacking her, or pulling her starseed.
But then, the rational part of him whispered a thought into his head.
“You misunderstand,” he said as evenly as he could. “...That’s my friend, and I’m trying to help him. But he isn’t an animal, and I’m not scaring him. His name is Evan. We’re trying to find a cure, to save him. So if you take him away from me, you’re condemning him to that life,” he said, gesturing towards the youma. “...But I want to make him human again. Only, I don’t have the help I need. So, it’s nice and all that you want to help him, but…”
His voice trailed off and he shrugged. “...I don’t know. You probably think I’m crazy. But if you’ve got half a brain, you can take one look at him and tell he’s not a cat, or a dog. He’s a human. And right now, I’m the only one who can help him.”
Once more, Sanidine paused, and then looked at her very seriously. “‘...Unless you really mean it when you say you want to help him.”

Emily laughed as the creature in her arms licked her cheek. It tickled, and with the second lick…it tingled. Not quite pain, but something right on the edge of it.
She listened to the guy’s rant about this thing being…human? How could it be human? It was a dog. Cat. Something. It was a something, but it wasn’t a human. That was for sure. Finally she narrowed her eyes and took a slow step backwards.
Clearly there was on easy thing to deduce from all of this…
He was absolutely insane. That was all there was to it.
“Yeah…I do really want to help him…and the more you talk, the more I can really see that the best thing for him…would be to get him away from you…and perhaps, you should make your way over to the hospital…if you’re thinking that this…catdog was—is a person…you clearly need some help too.” She had to get out of there. Slowly she backed up another step, keeping her eyes on Sanidine.

Sanidine just watched her for a second; he didn't seem happy.
Even Evan looked as though he were a little nervous; he wriggled some in the girl's arms but didn't seem like he wanted to cause some sort of altercation.
"His name is Evan Harper, and you can check the missing person's. I've got a picture of him in my wallet. But I'd warrant the fact that there's a missing guy isn't what you're struggling with. You're struggling with the idea that he got turned into a monster. Or, that he is a monster. You don't have to believe me. But it would be better if you did."
She was looking right at him; their eyes were locked. So, Sanidine teleported behind her in the blink of an eye and continued, "The sooner you realize there's more to this than you know, the faster you can be of actual help. If you can't wrap your mind around the fact that I'm not crazy, just put him down and go. I don't have time for people who aren't going to take this seriously."

One minute he was there, spouting more nonsense at her, and the next he was…gone? But still talking…
Emily spun quickly around and stared, her ruby eyes widening in surprise and confusion. So…so maybe he wasn’t crazy.
“Oh.”
So the cat creature in her arms…was a person…? Had been a person?
“How can I help you save him?” Because now that the idea was pretty firmly…in her mind…she couldn’t just put him down and go home…this was exciting. This was new knowledge…this was…extremely interesting, and she was going to figure out how she could help. “I’m nothing special, not really. Just a librarian. I mean, if you let me know what to research, I’m sure I could work towards discovering something…or you can come to the library and I can pull books out for you…”
The little dog who was so cuddly…was a person? She looked back at him, frowning slightly. “How…how did he get this way? I…um. I take it that’s not normal for him…right?”

Truth be told, Sanidine had expected he'd have to show off a bit more to get her on his side, but when she was asking--honestly asking, he seemed to relax.
"It's not normal," he confirmed. "There was an accident. He got hurt. It was a mistake. And he was my friend, so I'm doing everything I can to fix him."
He left out the part that it was his fault, or that maybe he was going to subject this poor librarian to the same fate. He was stronger now. He could do it now.
His hands were clammy, anyway.
"I can give you a power, like my own. Access to a world unlike this one. If you want to help me, I need someone who can research. Who is good at finding answers that aren't there in broad daylight. It's not going to be easy, but..." His voice trailed off and he looked at Evan, who seemed to have relaxed himself and was back to waging again. "...But he deserves it."
He allowed a moment of silence and then continued, "So. You really want in? Because the introduction hurts--just for a moment. You'll barely even feel it, but I don't want us to start off on a bad foot if we're going to be a team. And afterwards, I'll tell you everything."

Emily ran a hand down Evan’s head and back, stroking his soft fur as she listened. So he got hurt…that was awful. Clearly she had to do something…if she was able to try, she had to try, right? It was her…well, not obligation, but she had to try to help. She couldn’t ignore it. “Yes I’m in. I want to do all I can. It must be awful for him, what do I have to do? And what do you mean by it hurts? I can take pain. That’s not that big of an issue.”
So maybe she was rushing into this without thinking…but it seemed like a worthwhile cause to rush into…
“I’m ready for whatever it takes. I want to help you help your friend.”

Sanidine breathed easier, but he couldn't quite relax. Not until he had done this successfully. He nodded and told Evan, "Sit on the ground, she can hold you again in just a moment."
Evan didn't wait; he bopped his head under Emily's chin before he dropped to the ground and sat by patiently.
While Sanidine had the option to give Emily all the information, he didn't. He didn't want to scare her, or for her to change her mind. There was no point right now; he just needed to get it done.
He approached her and offered a kind smile. "You seem like a good person. Evan needs that. He needs to be okay. I'm glad you're willing to do this."
For a split second, his expression was apologetic, and then he moved quickly. He slid his hand into her chest as kindly as he could, gripped her starseed with gentle fingers, and pushed chaos in so carefully that he wasn't even able to breathe.
He was too afraid to--too afraid of messing up and winding up with another youma. He stood still and remained focused, and hopeful. As he pushed the Chaos into her starseed, he hoped he got this right. He needed an ally. He needed someone to help him. To help Evan.
He couldn't fail again.

Emily gave a small sigh as…Evan left her arms. She liked holding him. He was soft and warm and cuddly. But…he said she could hold him again…in a moment. She watched Sanidine and felt just…well. Felt absolutely unsure of this decision, perhaps all due to the fact that he just…seemed…
Odd. He seemed odd. Unstable, maybe. And why was she getting herself into something she didn’t understand? That sounded like a recipe for disaster if she really bothered to think about it…not that she would.
Before she could change her mind though, his hand slipped into her chest and there was pain.
Gritting her teeth, Emily closed her eyes against the feeling and curled her hands into fists as the chaos entered her. Changing her. Making her stronger. No, Sanidine didn’t fail this time. Not at all.
Lieutenant Bellite was born after just a few more seconds of chaos entering Emily’s Starseed.

Though Sanidine felt winded, the moment he saw a Lieutenant before him, he was able to stand a little taller. A little prouder.
He wasn't a failure. He could do this. He'd make a whole damned army if he needed to, to save Evan. She was just the start--but she was a good start.
Evan movd closer, one hand resting on the back of her leg, just under her knee as he looked up at her worriedly. His ears were folded low and he seemed to be fearing the worst.
Sanidine, though, smiled softly. "I'm sorry about that. Are you feeling all right? That's the worst of it, I promise. If you want to sit down for a bit, we can. I'll buy you a cup of coffee or something, and talk to you about...all of this. There's...a lot more to go over, than just how we're going to help him, I think," he said, eyes darting to Evan quickly before returning to the new Lieutenant in front of him.
