The day was a warm one. Not that that was an especially unusual thing in stagnant waters, but Rewi always found that heat tended to make him lazy and unreceptive to the needs of his parents and siblings. Not that that was unusual, either. They said it was because of the temperature and changing climate that they must work together more efficiently now. The young boy couldn't be allowed to laze about as he pleased.
Rewi disagreed. And his disagreement was so strong that he found himself wandering from his home early that day, before the great brunt of the nagging could begin. He could make some excuse while he was out- he'd been hungry, or they needed more fertilizer, or his shears weren't sharp enough. Something like that. It probably wouldn't spare him from all his mother's frustrations, but it would do well enough.
For now, he basked.
Rewi was a young Menehune of simple needs, and the great flat rock on the edge of the swamps waters was the perfect place to let just a few of the sun's rays sink into his dark skin. He couldn't linger long, mind you, but the day was a warm one, and he felt especially lazy.jayoku I'm sorry this took longer than I expected, and I hope this is okay!

They had been on their way to the great meeting, but having to leave the waters always put his father on edge as well himself. Kai watched warily as they emerged slowly from the river and then approached the shore. This was only going to be a quick hop over to the branching river, as the one they had been in was too strong for Kai to actually make any head way.
Releasing his hand Jherai grumbled something under his breath before spotting a near by shallow stream. It branched off the main one they had been in ...but looked as if it was draining into the marsh lands. The older man checked the reeds for any dangers before plucking Kai up and setting him into the waters.
"Stay here until I find a better route." Jherai ordered sternly, earning a stiff nod from his son. When his father form receded Kai found himself alone in an unfamiliar stream. Licking his lips he slumped deeper into the water, it wasn't entirely deep, in fact if he stood on the bottom reached up his fingers could wiggle in the air. Still he knew better than to disobey his father...and thus milled about exploring the stream floor with slight interest.
It was muddy, with reeds decaying on the bottom. Small fish could be seen darting to and fro amongst them. He really shouldn't...but he was hungry perhaps he could grab one and satisfy some of his hunger pains.
Fishing though was difficult when you were young and had only a vague idea on how to do it. As soon as he neared the fish would dart away, back and forth he did this dance with them until he suddenly noticed that the waters...had drastically gotten shallower. Standing up suddenly he found himself with water at his waist the ground under his feet was thick with sludge and mud. Taking a step...he soon found himself ..stuck.
The suction from the mud was keeping his feet firmly in place. Panic sprouted in his features quite quickly as he struggled to get away. Unaware that there was someone nearby he could of shouted out to for help. Indigo_Plateau don't be sorry! Between packing and getting our house ready to show/sell our rp completely slipped my mind... crying thank you so much for starting it! <3

The only sound that greeted him this morning was the near-silent ripple of reed fronds flicking in the slight breeze and disturbing the water, and the nearby hum of insects lingering on the bank. It was a fine day to be lazy, really. Though after hardly more than a few moments sunbathing on his rock, already Rewi felt dry. He enjoyed the sun and appreciated all that it did in helping their plants to grow, but sitting directly in it for any longer than he had already just begged for trouble.
With a satisfied nod, he slid from his perch and back into the water and felt more normal almost instantly. Still warm, mind you, but significantly less so.
He'd hardly done so much as that when the peaceful sounds of nature were quite suddenly disturbed. The insects stopped their chirping and the rustling plant life was quickly overshadowed by slightly less calm sounds. Whatever was making that was certainly larger than the usual fish. Rewi's first instinct was to leave. He didn't want to be caught up in whatever trouble lay ahead.
But it might not be trouble at all, and if it wasn't, he should like to be a part of it. Instead of ignoring the sounds, he followed them, and they brought him through the reeds and stagnant water to a shallow, murkier place in the swamp. He blinked, tipped his head, and stared. And a not Menehune was over here too! Should he say something? The stranger looked rather distraught, and he clearly din't belong. Rewi shifted closer, careful to keep his weight well-balanced over the soggy murk, so as not to get stuck himself.
Once he was close enough to practically touch the strange trespasser, he hummed, "Hey you, whatcha doing over here?"

Kai was still struggling to get his legs out of the suction of the mud. Flailing as he failed he found himself toppling backwards awkwardly, like he was sitting but not in the correct way he found his back back in the water but it was putting stress on his spine. He wasn't entirely sure where he has wandered off to..he was still in the same stream so it couldn't of been to far.
Kai's eyes were closed as he was struggling to not cry, his father was going to be so angry at home for wandering off. What if he never found his father again? What if he was destined to starve to death here because he was stuck? About to sit up he was startled into a standing position by the sound of a voice. Wide eye'd he looked in the direction the voice had come from, he looked as if he would bolt away...if he wasn't so stuck as he was.
Tears had snuck out of the corners of his eyes, but it was hard to really tell with his wet hair dripping down his face.
"I' ...I'm stuck..." he managed to mumble..

This one was certainly... uncoordinated.
Rewi tried not to grin at the obvious misfortune of one so small. The kid was just a little thing, and likely wouldn't be much familiar with these lands at all, if he had to guess. But the young boy was just so upset, and Rewi couldn't begin to understand the need for that much emotion. The day was nice, even if the circumstances weren't ideal, and it wasn't like he was going to die there, probably.
As the other managed to make it back to his feet, Rewi tipped his head, crossed his arms, and wondered what to do about this predicament. He wasn't much familiar how to handle crying children, and this one looked plenty distraught and certainly unsupervised. "Mm, you don't have an adult somewhere, do you?" He prompted. "Dunno why you'd be out here wandering by yourself... It's kind of a long way from home, isn't it...?" Either way, he ought to do something. Little ones couldn't be left to fester and cry in the mud without someone there to look after him.
"Hey, c'mon, now. You don't need to cry," Rewi encouraged. "I'll help you out this time, and you'll know to be more careful in the future, right?" He asked as he extended an arm to the boy.

Kai was young, and full of insecurities, there wasn't a day that went by that he wasn't worrying about something. Was he afraid? Yes but what was causing him to feel so panicked right now? Was it just because he was stuck in the mud? Was he afraid that he would never find his father again? There were perhaps a multitude of things that were worrying the boy but right now all he was able to do was stare and try and not to cry.
"i..'m not cr..crying." Kai hiccuped using a arm to wipe his face, "I ..daddy was trying to find the best route ..to..the great..meeting.." Kai stumbled over his words not sure why he was telling this person these things. But he had asked hadn't he? Being scolded by a complete stranger as well was humiliating. Kai already knew that he shouldn't of wandered off, Daddy was going to be angry at him. Kai did find a bit of comfort in the fact the person who had found him wasn't an adult...though he was older than himself.
"I..I was hungry...there were little fish.." He managed pointing to the muddy waters below him. "I didn'..t mean to..g...go far..." Indigo_Plateau seriously i feel really bad that i didn't respond sooner....>>;

Ah. Not crying, right. Rewi laughed softly and shook his head. This poor, stuttering little thing. He was a bit too small, and a bit too foreign to be wandering these lands alone. That much was true. But it still didn't seem like a reason to be as scared and concerned as he was. Poor thing. Especially since he had been out with a parent to begin with. Rewi cast his gaze around. No immediate sign of him, though.
He stepped nearer. "If it's alright, I can pull you out of the mud. It'd be really great if you could, ah... Not make it more difficult." Rewi wasn't one to be much bothered if a stranger touched him, but he wasn't so foolish as to expect everyone was the same way. This one was just a kid, so if the Kaha'iko was bothered, it would only look really, really terrible to passerby, for a teenager to be touching a kid.
Rewi dipped, snuck an arm around the youngster's waist, and lifted him free with a soft 'pop!' of suction from the mud. He stepped away with all due haste, afterwards.
"There," he said with a nod. "It's not so bad, right? At least you aren't stuck, anymore, and I could help you find something less..." Rewi glanced in the direction indicated for the 'little fish.' "Hazardous to try and capture." He grinned down at the little boy before him. "I'm Rewi, by the way."jayoku Don't worry about it. =] I'm in no rush.

THe young man chewed on his lower lip, the prospect of being free of the mud a comforting one. Nodding his head slightly he reached out as the other went to get him and clung much like a little child may once his legs were free of the suctioning goop. Trempling still as his legs felt a jelly he stuck to Rewi for a bit longer even as he was put down.
Looking up at the boy as if he had just found his new hero, he gave a small tentative smile before releasing Rewi quickly. "Ah..i'm Kai.." He managed shyly despite the fact he had just clung to him moments ago. Moving his hair out of his face he felt a bit winded and dunk down into the murky water to catch his breath before coming out again. At the mention of finding something else to eat he perked up instantly. Food. Yes he was very hungry still. But shouldn't he go back to where his dad had left him? Maybe..in a minute. THe promise of food was too much of a lure.
"Y..es! Pl..ease..I mean..I am ..hungry.." He managed trying to at least be polite.

Hm. While the younger boy caught his breath from the struggle of being out of the water, Rewi took a moment to scrutinize him. This really wasn't any place for someone so young, particularly someone so young and not of the Menehune, to be lingering about by himself. He hadn't been alone at some point, Rewi reminded himself. The boy- Kai, had said his 'daddy' was around somewhere...
Rewi cast a glance around, wondering if he was very near witnessing what was going on. He couldn't think of many Menehune families that would take too well to accepting aid from a Kaha'iko, but maybe the fairer-skinned race wouldn't mind so much, particularly since this little one might have been in a pretty bad spot.
Still, he didn't think he wanted to take the child too much farther from where he came, snacks or not.
"Well, maybe you can tell me which direction you came from, at least?" Rewi decided after a moment. He could guess that the younger boy probably came from Kaha'iko waters, but there were enough turns in the river bend and free-flowing openings, that there were still a handful of options to choose from. "If we start heading back from where you came, maybe we can find a little fish on the way to your father, or some dakweed. You're not sold just on fish, are you?"jayoku Excuse me if I repeat myself or something doesn't match up with anything Rewi has said earlier. XP I'm trying to find him again.

Which direction he had come from? His face scrunched up with thought as he pondered this question before casting a look about. He had followed the fish, though ...he couldn't say for certain that the fish had traveled in a straight line...after all they did tend to dart around. Still...turning he looked around, trying to spot something that looked familiar. Maybe something he had seen under water that could be used as a land mark.
All he could deduce was the brackish muddy waters around them. Perhaps after some time the sediment would settle and the water would be clear again but for now...it was still quite murky. Frowning he hesitantly pointed in the direction he was...about 80% sure was the direction he had come from.
"I...think it was from that direction." He murmured, trying to sound sure of himself but reality was quite dubious of his own claim. Indigo_Plateau Sorry for the slow :3 Babeh means I can only reply if she is down for a nap..and she's had a rough week.

Rewi couldn't exactly say that he was one who had a great expertise in directions, so when the younger boy sounded hesitant about his answer, Rewi decided not to hold it against him. Kai was still pretty small, after all! And probably in relatively unfamiliar waters. If he was going to get lost, now seemed like the most likely time. And though Rewi was a little anxious for Kai's father to find them together, in case any incorrect conclusions might be jumped to, he wasn't just going to leave the kid to himself.
"Well, as the gods would have it, the currents have washed me in your direction today. Don't worry," Rewi assured. "We'll figure out how to get you where you're going together." Though that did mean Rewi had to be mindful of exactly where they were headed and where they'd come from.
It was a bit of a hassle to have to pay so much attention...
But necessary, he supposed, to help Kai. "Alright, come on!" With a more determined nod to himself, Rewi took the lead, gliding off in the direction the other boy had indicated. "So... You're heading to the meeting, huh? My father says we'll have to go too, but I don't think he wants to be away from home any longer than he can help. It's especially hard on us," Rewi said conversationally, "Since we've never traveled into Pale'iko before."

It was Kai's first time traveling this far before. The meeting was suppose to be very important and to be honest he felt great pride that his father brought him along in the first place. Still though he was starting to wonder if he should of stayed at home with his mom looking after the eggs... he hoped that by getting lost it meant they weren't going to be late for the meeting.
Watching as the older boy Rewi started off he fell in behind him quickly. He was being such a bother having Rewi lead him hopefully back to his father. As they swam he was mindful of the shallower areas so he wouldn't get stuck in the mud again.
"Ah. it would be harder for you..to go wouldn't it.." he surmised as it hadn't dawned on him before that it would be more difficult for the people of the swamps and muddy waters. " My dad says we use to go there often before the water levels started dropping. Now its harder for us as well to travel..." Though he wondered if it was only tougher because he was along. He sounded perhaps bit too mature for his age, but the dropping water levels were something his father had made him quite familiar with on the constant visit to the drying banks to measure and remeasure the shoreline.
"Have you noticed the water drying up?" He asked feeling perhaps a bit silly asking.

"Mm..." Rewi thought on it as he swam, weaving through the grassy tendrils that sprouted from the swamp bed as he tried to guide Kai back to safer waters. "I suppose I couldn't say how difficult the actual trip would be," he admitted. They had never once traveled from the swamp lands before, so it might be that the waters of Pale'iko were easier to navigate, but... "It's just that all of it will be very unfamiliar to us, from the paths we should take, the people we should meet, the food we should eat, and even the clarity and sensation of the water." They were used to the still murk of Elehun. A flowing river sounded especially challenging to swim through, by contrast.
"So it would be harder, in that regard. I don't think very many Menehune at all have traveled too far past Naele, so it isn't even as though we could find a guide to lead us to Noelani. When we travel, we'll essentially be doing so alone and with very little practical knowledge of what to expect..."
Rewi wasn't one to worry. The currents would bid him to go where they pleased, but as far as this trip was concerned, he did think it rather bothersome. He wouldn't go, if he didn't have to.
But he did have to. Of course he did. Anyone that cold go absolutely should. It was the only way to learn whatever information the elders at Noelani had for how to deal with the changing climate. Anyone who couldn't go would have to wait for others to bring back instruction, anyway. Either way, they were all in it together, and those who lived in Naele, the border town, as Rewi and his family did, almost had more duty to attend. They were neaer to the meeting point already, and some had had past contact with Kaha'iko, as Rewi had now.
He gazed toward the shoreline. "I've heard the village speak of the receding shorelines," he replied. "But as far as actually noticing a difference? I can hardly say I do. Maybe I haven't been alive long enough to truly appreciate the change of it, but if those who have lived so long say it's a crisis, it must be."
Not that Rewi was sure of that, either. The gods worked in mysterious ways, after all.
