[OOC Note: open to all pride members. I just quoted those I know who own cubs so feel free to quote anyone I might have missed!]
There had been somewhat of a baby boom in the Nergui pride recently - despite all the travelling. One litter might have gone ignored by the horde but three were a little harder to leave behind in the dust. Nergui were not all that forgiving on the whole but seeing as their numbers needed bolstering and the recent litters were worthy ones, the journey had come to a temporary halt to give growing cubs a chance to continue doing so.
The lands they had chosen were close to another pride territory and that seemed to be keeping many of the males busy day and night. Yet, despite rubbing shoulders with others, they had food and water aplenty, making their unplanned stop-off a welcome one. The Nergui, you might say, were not used to such luxuries.
In a sunny clearing, Gren and Sarangerel - both emkurcar - basked in dappled shade whilst keeping a sharp eye on their cubs at play. Their motherhood, in truth, was the only thing they had in common. Gren was a large, bulky female with a scowling face and growling voice but gentle of temperament. Sarangerel, whilst beautiful and elegant, was a lot sharper of tongue and claw despite her smaller stature.
Two male cubs of similar size, tumbled across the dirt, hanging onto each other by their sharp, little teeth.
Krork, son of Zizima and Orok, son of Gael, were testing their strength against one another - a good match, it seemed, for neither could quite get the upperhand. Krork's sister, Zanzima, cheered on from the sidelines - casting glances at her mother as if to see whether her actions would be greeted with approving nods--
--and they were.
Gren, smiled, looking more proud than she ever had. The smile rarely left her face these days.

Dakka gra-Gren also watched the boys, but she didn't try to egg them on. She was lying down with her head close to her paws and with tail twitching. It was very tempting to pounce especially when the ball of cubs rolled closer to her, but she resisted the temptation. Pouncing two rowdy boys was just asking to be squished, but it was fun to pretend. Her tail was sweeping to and fro, in wider and wider arcs betraying her excitement. She'd have to "kill" something soon or burst from all the pent up energy.

Gael was glad the horde had settled down now that three litters of cubs had graced them. It gave them time to become strong enough to walk and keep up, as well as the mothers to recover from the birth. He had made sure to keep Gren as comfortable as he could during the end of her pregnancy and afterwards, taking his turn to watch the cubs while she went to stretch her legs and have some 'me' time. They were little bundles of perfection to him, even if some of them seemed to have inherited their mother's under bite and big boned stature. He approached the two mothers, fully aware that Sarangerel's son had been the one to challenge him for Gren.
"They seem to be enjoying themselves," he said, watching the pile of cubs roughhouse as he bumped his head against his mate's.
A third mother joined the group, her cubs in tow as she approached. Saran was the youngest of the trio but had had her cubs first, and now had a few step siblings to boot. It was a very busy time in her life and she couldn't have enjoyed it more.
"Go play," she said to her cubs, swishing her tail in the direction of their uncles and aunts, as well as the other cubs to which they had no relation. She moved to flop down beside her mother, a pleased look on her face. "How kind of the horde to stop for our sake," she said, obviously over the moon that the entire pride had halted their movement just for the three gathered here.
One of the three cubs that trailed Saran made a beeline for the two tussling males. Daksruae was a good deal larger than his uncle and the white lion and barreled into them without hesitation, teeth chomping down on one of their tails. He rolled promptly onto his side, scrabbling in the dirt to get a better purchase on the soil.
Dekkakbar sat with her sister, a rather uninterested look on her face. She was enjoying chewing on a stick that she had found not long ago, the wood slowly splintering between her bottom-heavy jaw. She had her mother's under bite and was putting it to good use. Occasionally she'd glance at Dakka, watching her sister's tail flip back and forth.
"Hey!" she said, spitting out the stick as her sister's tail caught a little rock and tossed it at her, completely by accident. "Watch it!"

He hadn't been a father for very long and already Zizima was struggling. Instead of being sat with his mate enjoying the welcome respite that the Nergui had allowed them, he was sat at a distance, keeping watch.
Despite being older than a lot of the Nergui, the Grey Warrior had had very little experience with cubs. He had gone almost his entire life without a Pride, and so cubs had never been on top of his list of priorities. Even when he fell for Sarangerel, it wasn't a subject that he himself chose to bring up. Now that they were here, he couldn't be happier, although he couldn't help but doubt that he even deserved such an emotion after all that had happened in his life.
That was an internal conflict for another day however, as presently, he had to keep a watchful eye on his cubs. He looked down at his side for a moment and grinned at one of his sons, who was keeping watch with him. Kuchoma'tamaa had the burning mane of a Firekin, which he had inherited from his Grandmother. Zizima had yet to explain this to him, and was unsure if he ever would.
When he looked back up, he saw the pale form of Gael making his way towards the gathered mothers. He frowned darkly and lifted a paw to pat Kuchoma on the back. "Go and play with your siblings." He then moved to meet Gael as he reached his own mate. He glanced briefly at Sarangerel, unsure how she was going to react to her son's attacker, before turning his attentions back to Gael. "I would like a word in private if you don't mind." It was clear from his tone of voice that he was not happy, but he remained cordial, at least for now. He then moved back to where he had originally been sat, far enough away from the group to have privacy but still close enough for him to keep an eye.
Kuchoma'tamaa loved spending time with both of his parents, but especially his father. Although he had been quite sheltered within the Pride, the dark grey cub had yet to see anyone who was as big and scary-looking as his dad. It filled him with such pride, and he hoped that one day he would be just as big as his father was. His mother wasn't anywhere near as big though, and so he didn't want to get his hopes too high.
He had noticed that his father didn't really say much during these watches, and so he couldn't help but feel a little bored. His tail flicked agitatedly from side to side as he watched his brother Krork and two other male cubs play. He wanted to go and play, but didn't want to hurt his father's feelings by saying so.
As Zizima grinned down at him, Kuchoma smiled widely back up. Then suddenly his father's mood changed, causing him to tilt his head in curiosity. Then he was given his change. When his father patted him on the back and told him to go and play he happily trotted over to where the action was happening.
"Come on Krork, you can beat them both!" He cheered on his white brother happily as he waited for his chance to strike.
From a distance, one might think that Zizima and Sarangerel had been blessed with only three cubs. The fourth was quite well-hidden, sat between his mother's legs, watching the other cubs with great interest.
Much like Kuchoma enjoyed spending time with his father, Nguvu'zandani enjoyed spending time with his mother. He wasn't a big fan of 'playing' as everyone else called it, as it seemed much too violent for his liking. He preffered to keep to himself mostly, although that was hard to do with his siblings and so many other cubs running around.
He peered up from between Sarangerel's legs and nuzzled into her fur. He was quiet by nature as well, never one to complain. Although he did love asking questions if something piqued his curiosity. He was an observer, and with everything he observed, he learned. When his father came over to address the pale lion who Nguvu to be another father, his tilted his head slightly and then peered up at his mother yet again. "What does father want with him?"

Dakka twisted over on her back as her sister cried out. What was she moaning about? She was distracted momentarily and batted at the discarded stick but then shook her paw with disgust. Ew! Sister-drool!
"What?" she said defensively and stared at Dekka, "I didn't do anything."
She wasn't sure why her sister was trying to pick a fight, but she was game. While she thought more than once before starting something with the boys she had no second thoughts when it came to tussling with other females.

Gren gave a growling purr, leaning her muzzle up to rub it against her husband's chin. The lioness could not have been happier with all that life had given her so far. It had been a tough existence and a sad one, sometimes, but it had all led to this and, as far as she was concerned, it was worth it.
"Yes. They have friends."
Friends. Her eyes were fixed firmly on the cubs at play - even if it was a little rough - and laughed as the two roughhousing cubs were joined by another - even larger - cub. She turned smiling eyes back to her mate - just as she spotted Zizima moving over to them. Her ears flattened in a show of respect, though one rose a little in curiosity.
The Grey Warrior wished to talk to her daor?
-----
Sarangerel laughed pleasantly at her eldest daughter. "And they say that women are not as strong as the men, hm? When three mothers were able to bring this whole procession to a halt." She smiled, proud as ever, and leaned across to rub her head against Saran's.
Then, just as protectively, she leaned back to nuzzle against her son, Nuguvu'zandani. He seemed to have become her shadow the moment he had gained enough strength to walk. She was surprised by his question, however, not having noticed anything at all. "Who, dearest?" the words were out of her mouth before she had lifted her head, but when she did, she saw who her son meant.
"Ah, him. I've heard the talk. Apparently that pale lion fancies himself important, these days." She wasn't sure how to feel about Gael. He had beaten her son, which was not something she was too happy about...and yet, it seemed to her that it was the best thing that could have happened to Nokhoi. The lion seemed to be ore focused now and that gave her hope for his future. "Perhaps your father wants to see if the rumours are just that, or if they hold any truth. The horde holds much value in strength."
---
"Ah!" Krork yelped as nephew leapt into the fray, "cheat! cheat!"
The pale cub rolled in an attempt to try and free his tail, squealing in half-fear and half-delight at the turn this game had taken. Suddenly the game had stopped being a duel and had turned into a real battle, just like in the stories!
"Orok, help!"
And the green-pelted cub, with a 'roar', leapt at the larger cub; the two smaller ones preparing to bring down the 'giant'.
And, it was in that moment, drawn by the noise of playing cubs, a striped weasel poked it's head out from the undergrowth to see what all the fuss was about. It's peaceful home had suddenly become a cacophony of strange noise!

His mate's simple phrase made Gael grin right back. Friends were hard to come by here in the Nergui, but perhaps if they were raised together like this they would have bonds that wouldn't be tested even by the harshness the pride liked to instill in its members. The other cubs were all related so they'd have that to their advantage, leaving their large litter out just a bit. But so far it seemed they were all blending together very well, relations not thought of.
It was then that he was approached by Zizima. It was rather a surprise to the smaller lion, especially the tone that was used, but he nodded in agreement. He watched the Grey Warrior return to the place he had been overseeing the rough and tumble group before leaning down to give Gren another nuzzle.
"I'll be right back," he said before carefully picking his way across the shady area where the mothers and cubs were resting and at play. He paused a few paces from the larger lion once he cleared the playgroup.
"Yes?" he asked expectantly.
---
Saran chuckled with her mother and smirked in agreement - the males certainly called the shots around here for the most part, but she'd like to see them bring the entire horde to a willing stop so close to another pride. She turned her gaze to her cubs as the two male that were present wandered off, leaving the mothers and their cubs.
As Sarangerel spoke to her small brother the young mother had to laugh. She knew of her brother's defeat to the pale lion, but didn't feel any sort of pity for him. That was how it worked here, after all. To gain a mate that someone else desired you had to battle. He had lost, Gael had won. She didn't know how Nokhoi had expected to win such a battle when all he had ever been good at was getting burrs and branches stuck in his mane from crawling around in the underbrush.
"Perhaps he's looking to see if there's any of Nokhoi's dignity stuck in his claws still," she teased.
---
Daks found the tail between his teeth pulled out and he lay there on the ground for a moment, a little surprise, right up until his uncle and the other lion pounced. "Gah!" he yelped as he tried to squirm away, the two smaller lions easily putting his size to disadvantage by having more of him to attack.
It was then, out of the corner of his eye, that something far more interesting showed itself. "Whoa...what is that?" he asked, still pinned to the ground by the two lions.
---
Dekka scowled at her sister, a rather intimidating look (she thought) thanks to her jutting jaw. In reality it was adorable in a strange kind of way. "You hit me with a rock!" she insisted. Whether or not it was on purpose didn't matter. She got to her feet and was about to pounce on her sibling when noise from the boys made her pause. Her eyes trained on the funny long creature with curiosity.
"...is that a stick with legs?"

Zizima waited for Gael to join him before sitting once more, still keeping an eye on his brand new family. It was because of family that he wished to speak with him though, and so he decided to give Gael his full attention. "I wish to know, in your own words, what happened between you and Nokhoi."
Although the rumours and backchat had died down regarding the fight between Gael and Nokhoi, Zizima couldn't exactly let it go without knowing exactly what had transpired. He had chosen not to speak with Nokhoi about it, instead focussing solely on his training. The young lion had proven relatively capable and determined, much to the Grey Warrior's surprise. Still, he would like to put the situation to bed, and he could only do that if he knew the whole story.
If his cubs were going to be around Gael's, he had to know that he could be trusted.
With his brother and the two other male cubs busy fighting, Kuchoma'tamaa had already lay his dark eyes on something completely different. It was too long to be a cub like them, and too small. It was furry though and had legs, so it couldn't be a snake either. Whatever it was, the dark grey cub wanted a closer look.
When he heard Daksruae perk up, Kuchoma quickly sprang into action. "I spotted it first!" He quickly ran past the other cubs heading straight for the unknown creature, having suddenly forgotten all that his father had taught him about stealth and knowing your prey.
Nguvu'zandani tilted his head slightly at his mother's answer regarding the pale lion that his Father wanted to speak to. "He 'fancies' himself important? Does that mean that he actually isn't?" As a cub, he would still have much to learn about the inner-workings of the Pride. From what he gathered, both of his parents were held in quite high regard, but he wasn't really sure why. Of course, the fact that they were the best parents ever might have something to do with it.
His big sis Saran then spoke, causing him even more curiousity. Before he could ask about Nokhoi, his other brother Kuchoma apparently spotted something. Nguvu'zandani couldn't help but chuckle at his brother's reaction to the strange snake-thing. He didn't much fancy taking it on himself, as he knew nothing about it. Whatever it was though, he liked the look of it, and wondered if it was something that could be befriended, like the birds that a lot of Nergui allied themselves with.
"What is that mother?"

With a nod, Gren settled back down, trying to look relaxed though she felt anything but. If anyone tried to cause trouble. If anyone dared think of hurting Gael, then there would be hell to pay. She wasn't about to let her happiness be snatched from her.
---
"Well," Sarangerel trailed, "he's not important yet. Though I suppose he could be if he put in the time and effort. Hardwork is often rewarded." She looked a little put out to admit that Gael could be important someday but she was not about to lie to her son when he asked her a genuine question. If he worked hard, he too could rise up the ranks.
Then another question.
She turned green eyes in the direction that Nguvu'zandani had indicated and tilted her head, curious. To be quite honest she had never seen one before. Whatever it was obviously did not find the north to be habitable. Still, it was small and furry and likely tasted as good as any prey would. She smiled at the reaction of other cubs who had also spotted it.
"I'm afraid I do not know," she replied, "but it is most certainly food. I'd wager in a few moments, it'll be dead."
Her eyes sidled back to Saran, "have you seen that no-good brother of yours of late?"
---
The boys chuckled as their team work seemed to be going to plan--and then, the distraction!
"I'm not falling for that," Krork started, looking smug that he hadn't fallen for the oldest trick in the book. The same could not be said for his partner-in-crime, Orok, whose head snapped around immediately.
"You dork!" Zanzima squealed at her brother, "there really is something there." She bounced across to join her brothers, sniffing the air as if to get a good sense of what the creature was. "It's a rat! A BIG rat! Get him!"
And then Kuchomo'tamaa swept past her and she gave an indignant little snort, stomping a paw onto the ground. "Don't let him beat you! Run!"
And, just like that, Krork and Orok took off after the weasel.
---
[ooc: roll 1 six-sided dice for each cub you have involved in the 'hunt'. If you match the weasel's number, your cub finds it!]
The weasel froze, tail and ears bolt upright, the fur along its back bristled. With a high-pitched squeak, it reversed out of sight, turned, and clambered back through the undergrowth and the tunnels it had made from months of patrolling back and forth.
After a few moments it disappeared out of sight beneath a chunk of rotten log, curling up tight and trying to still its breaths.
Gael waited for the large grey male to speak, and when he did he raised his brows in surprise. The battle for Gren with Nokhoi was far from his mind, an incidental moment in time that actually turned out for the better. He probably should hunt down the other male to thank him for kick-starting his and Gren's relationship, seeing as how they'd both been too nervous of ruining a friendship to really say anything.
"He wished to take Gren as his own," he said simply. "I was in the process of a less...brutish albeit slow courtship of her already, so when he made his claim clear I had to rebuff it as the Nergui see fit." Gael could be as hardheaded and bloodthirsty as the rest of the pride, but there was also a softer, flower-loving side to him that he and his mate shared. He could appreciate the finer things in life when they crossed his path, but would resort to more violent tactics when required.
"He accepted my challenge, we fought, he lost," he went on with a shrug. "As simple as that."
---
Saran watched as the cubs were attracted to a strange, skinny creature, and found she had to agree with Zanzima - it looked like a large, long rat with a fluffy tail. How strange!
"No," she said as she glanced back at Sarangerel, the strange rodent no longer of interest to her. "He's been skulking about at the edge of the pride, as usual. I think he misses the brier bushes back in the old lands. There's nothing around here for him to get tangled up in his fur."
---
Daks struggled to get to his feet, the other cubs pinning him down as they ran after the strange thing. "Hey!" he said, scrambling to his paws and chasing after them. "Wait for me!" But the creature was already gone, disappearing into some hole or other as the cubs dashed forward.
---
Dekka stood even as the boys ran after the thing, curiosity getting the better of her. She trotted over to where she had last seen it and gave a curious sniff, unsure if it had gone underground or was just hiding. She looked back over her shoulder at her sister, tail flicking back and forth.
"Come on then! Let's find this thing!"

Zizima raised a brow at Gael's revelation that his fight with Nokhoi had been over Gren. It was of no surprise to him that the foolish youth who was missing a father would challenge for a female without doing any prior research, but that would have to be a lesson he would teach him in the future.
Despite the somewhat more 'innocent' explaination, the Grey Warrior was still struggling with the situation. Having a family of his own now had completely affected his way of thinking. If anyone did to his own sons what Gael had done to Nokhoi, regardless of the reason, he would kill them. Whilst that would make him a hypocrite, he failed to see any other course of action.
Nokhoi was not his though, and as much as he was willing to take him under his wing, he was not willing to lose face over him. He had challenged for a female and lost, and that was all there was to it. At least now that he knew what had happened, he would have some new lesson for Nokhoi, although it seemed he had already learnt a few the hard way.
"Thank you for your honesty Gael." With that, Zizima got up from where he was sat and moved to join his mate once more, as he heard the cubs kicking up a commotion.
Kuchoma'tamaa had gotten a small head start before the other cubs, and it certainly paid off. He saw the creature scurry under a chunk of rotten log. As he reached it, he slowed his pace and started to stalk, edging closer and closer to his prey, dark eyes narrowed.
He pounced on the rotting bark, hoping it would break under his paws, which it did. He felt his claws sink into something furry and fleshy, and so he quickly used his mouth to throw out the remaining shards of bark. Then there it was. Pinned under his grasp, his claws digging in albeit gently, the strange long rat as the other cubs were calling it.
He tilted his head as he peered down at it, wondering what to do next. "Should I kill it?" He looked towards his mother for an answer, and spotted that his father was coming over as well. They would both be so proud of him!
Nguvu'zandani ponder his mother's answer regarding the pale lion who his father had gone off with. It made sense, hard work being rewarded. He got the feeling though that his mother didn't want this particular male to be rewarded with anything. He was still young though, and figured he was just mistaken.
He was quite surprised that his mother didn't know what the long furry creature was that his siblings were chasing. He had been told that they had travelled very far from their home though, so it made sense that there would be things in this new place that even his mother wouldn't know about.
When he saw that his brother Kuchoma had subdued the creature, he took a few steps out from between his mother's legs and peered over, before deciding to walk the rest of the way to his brother and the other cubs to get a closer look. When his brother asked if he should kill it, Nguvu's ears lowered slightly. He didn't really want to see his brother kill such an unusual creature, even if his mother had stated that it was food.

"I did not!" Dakka said, baring her teeth, but before the argument could escalate a small furry thing caught their attention. She followed her sister eagerly, trying to see where the small creature had gone. It seemed Kuchoma'tamaa had already found its hidey-hole, but the small male didn't seem to know what to do about it. Her tail twitched impatiently. She wouldn't have asked for permission to kill it!
"Kill it already," she growled, "Or at least hurt it a little and let it go so we can play again."
That actually sounded fun...

Gren, who overheard the other females speaking of Nokhoi, shifted bashfully and let her head sink lower. She wasn't sure how public the knowledge was about the fight - or even if anyone cared - but it seemed strangely weird knowing that she shared space with his mother and sister, as well as numerous other relations. His family in the pride was somewhat more expansive than her own little brood.
---
Sarangerel gave a toothy smile, flicking her tail in the dust, "indeed. He has been looking a little better groomed these days. Either way, he seems to be staying out of trouble. Let's see how long that lasts!"
Her conversation was cut short as her mate moved up to join her and she leaned up to touch the top of her muzzle to his chin, purring in greeting. "Daor." Her green eyes opened again just in time to hear the commotion and look across to see that Kuchoma'tamaa had been successful in the 'hunt'. She smiled, proud.
"Look at how well our son finds his prey!" She beamed, looking momentarily to Zizima. Then, with a fond smile, she watched as her quieter son moved in to get involved.
"If you wish to kill it, be quick!" She called. The slippery rat could probably worm out from beneath little paws if it was desperate enough for it's life.
---
Krork, Zanzima and Orok bumped into one another when the leading cub came to a halt, sending the three of them reeling.
"Tamaa caught it!" Krork declared.
"No fair!" Zanzima replied, "we could have got it."
---
Unfortunately for the weasel, in its curiosity it had attracted a horde of cubs its way. Sooner or later - no matter how well hidden it was going to be - one of them would have found it. It shrieked beneath Kuchomo'tamaa's paws and writhed in an attempt to escape.
By some luck - perhaps as the cub looked to his parent's for advice - he managed to slip free and, with a high-pitched squeak, made a break for it - dashing out across open ground and into the long grass. Perhaps it hoped to find a rabbit burrow to see itself to safety.

Vsevelod had followed the Nerguid group wanting to stick close. Especially to the hyena that had seemed to taken a liking to him. Although their language was still strange he was somewhat picking up on it. He was pretty sure he'd like to stick with the group but he didn't want to make a snap decision at the moment. It seemed they were content to let him continue traveling with them. All the cubs about were actually a welcomed sight to him. He kept a bit of distance between himself and them however, not wanting to cross paths with any angry parents that might not want a stranger hyena about them. Though he gave them all encouraging cheers at their small little battles.
Warriors. Every single one of these members were warriors and it made him feel good to be in their presence. Although he was not quite a warrior he was tough. A hyena's jaws could break and crush bones. Mostly it was when eating but a good hold on a creature that was alive and they could end them.
---
Ngozi looked at the other cubs but did not so much want to join in at the moment. She was more content watching them, spying on their movements to learn how they moved. The small seer cub was smart. Though when the weasel showed up her interest was a touch piqued and she got up from her laying down position to begin to investigate with the others. Before she knew it the small creature was gone. However the chase was not given up and she followed the others.
"What we gunna do when we find it?" She asked the others, now wanting to be apart of the fun. Her own tail twitching in a bit of agitation.

This time Dakka wasn't going to mess around. She dashed after the small creature, not caring about who she pushed in the progress. The squeaking egged her on further, but her claws found only dirt and the only thing she managed to kill was a tuft of grass. She spat it out and looked around, prepared to pounce if the scared critter would be dumb enough to run her way again. Grass rustled, but she wasn't sure where it was now.
"Where is it," she growled, "You should have hurt it so it couldn't get away!"
