Back to work, he thought as he looked out at the expanse of his shop. It maintained his meticulousness, certainly - nothing changed since his departure from his life and into the realm of Other Ashdown. Did Vale simply never visit? Did he prefer things as they were? Could the fetch have formally closed his business and notified the leaseholder that repossession could occur at any time? A whorl of questions overtook him as he stumbled inside and loosed the keys from the latch.

That couldn’t be so, he assured himself. Ashton asked after employment when the Court adjourned. If Vale closed his shop, then why would Ashton bother to ask such a thing? No, Vale must’ve maintained hours as posted. But why? Why do so when his task was to appropriate Alois’ life and change it into something unrecognizable? Or was his requirement simply that Alois detest the form that his life assumed? Was the lot of it a ploy to retain Alois at the Court forevermore? Was Father the one who arranged for his life to be ruined, or was it Melany’s scheme as the head of the Court? If Father was the one with the motive, then what excuse had he to have his life reformed so poorly?

I don’t know if thinking about it will do me any good. A stiff drink is of more use. He approached his counter, dropped his keys against it in a clatter. Rounding the length of it was a matter of tracing the edge with his fingers until he reached the long swath of tigerskin rug. He turned, faced the mounted heads on the wall, and cut in behind the counter where Schatzie used to lay.

What time was it? He had forgotten to check; the Court found less use for wristwatches and cell phones, and he quickly became accustomed to time by sun. Was he early, late? What time did he open anymore? He didn’t know.

He supposed Ashton would be the one to ask when she arrived - unless she was already here.

"You're here already," Ashton offhandedly commented, poking their head -- and then the rest of them, dressed in typical hipster fashion, hair swept back in a loose ponytail -- out from the back room. "I'm surprised -- I thought it'd take you a few more days, at least." Businesslike, they gave Alois a once-over, polite smile on their face. If they found him objectionable, they didn't show it.

"I'm assuming you've forgotten your hours? It's understandable. We opened two hours ago, by the way -- well. I opened two hours ago. But you have just been through all that, and I've sort of been managing the place for the past few months since your fetch took a bit of a hands-off approach, so." They dusted their hands off, clasping them in front of them, and dropped the smile.

"If you don't want to talk, that's perfectly fine. But it seems most efficient to redivide things now, now that you're back."

His eyes glazed over Ashton gently. A hand braced against the wall by the head of a mounted boar. „I got listless fast. I don’t lif’ where I sought I did anymore. Vale must’f changed zat. Now it’s just ze bottom half of a werehouse wis nossing in it - all he took zere was my bed, and zen he made some kind of desk out of cinderblocks. For all I know, he sold ze rest of my s**t.“

His hand rotated in a sweeping gesture, hurrying himself along. „All zat is to say, zere’s nossing to do at ‚home‘ anymore. Zere’s not really anyplace else to go unless I want to stew.“

Though, he wondered - was coming here only a change of venue for it? Could he truly return to work and dedicate time and meticulous attention to recreations again? Could he pull the skin of an animal over a mold and look it in its hand-rolled resin eyes and tell himself he didn’t just make himself a fetch? The thought left him grinding his teeth.

Apologetically his hand slipped from the wall, his gaze slipped from Ashton’s impassive face to the corner of his long counter. Briefly he recalled gouging his hip on it at least half a dozen times. „You’re right, I’f forgotten ze hours. Hah.“ He smiled mirthlessly. „In Germany, we…“ He paused, then sighed, and words caught and died in a stutter in his throat. „Nevermind. It’s not important.

„I don’t sink I fully belong here yet.“ Or anywhere, really. „But you’re right about needing a redivision - sings can’t be ze same anymore. Did you want ze freedom zat Vale gaf’e you? Or would you prefer having less responsibilities? It’s all ze same to me anymore.“ He finished dejectedly.

"You know, that would explain a lot," Ashton hummed, "but he was generally slightly more level-headed than you are, so I never bothered to ask too many questions. I don't like to question my employers." They left it at that, smirking. "All my suggestions boil down to 'do manual labor', 'become homeless', or 'go back to school' - so I'm afraid - " (well. They really weren't.) "my place is here, and your place is also, unfortunately here."

They fussed with their hair for a second, absentmindedly twirling stray strands, and then kept right on talking. "Responsibilities look better on a resume, but I don't mind getting bloody. It's really all up to you, remember? After the whole debacle -- does making simalcrums grind on you, now? Does it hit too close to home?"

You may not like to question your employers, but you sure mouth off to them.

He looked to the boar head, for he held suspicions about his self-restraint if he kept his attention trained on Ashton. Part of him urged to simply deck a b***h, to put an end to Ashton’s miserable prattling, but he lacked all energy and commitment for it beneath his weighted shoulders. A thumb traced the weathered tusk, checked the fur, and examined the eyes for clarity. Fine, Ashton. You want to build that resume? I’ll give you all the responsibilities you could ever want.

„It’s like I’m making fetches out of everything now,“ he mumbled.

When he spoke again, it was with a dryness that marked only the greatest wines. „Glad to know I wasn’t missed. I suppose zat means I can go home and lay in bed for ze next week. Fine, carry on. Run ze entire shop since zat seems to be what you’re after.

„I’ll return to my existential crises of ‚what am I doing here‘ and ‚can I even continue my elected profession anymore‘. Oh, and I’ll take a raincheck on ze empassy. You’re s**t at it anyway.“ Alois finished, and started for the door.

"You're too kind," Ashton said, but there was absolutely no pity in their voice - it was predatory. They'd gotten what they'd wanted out of Alois, and perhaps even more than they'd thought they could manage. "I'm glad we can make it all a very nice arrangement, hmm? And don't worry about my empathy; you certainly seemed to have no problem with it before, when I would never mouth off."

They gave him a faux-respectful little bow, then, bending at the waist. "Go sleep. Take a load off. Distract yourself! I'm sure none of this will do any good, and we wouldn't want that."

“No, you were too busy biding your time like a ******** snake in ze grass.“ Alois sighed; his vitriol carried none of the usual bite. His insults cut like dull fingernails, worn away from a struggle long before. What point did he think there was in returning? What point could he find in trying to resume a life that he could no longer fit?

Ezra changed him irrevocably - carved out pieces no longer needed and encouraged the growth of parts he seldom used. Now he would never find that same synergy with his life, nor would anyone he knew find him as tolerable. Vale truly shaped his life to suit the fetch’s needs far better than his own, and Alois could do nothing to reverse the effects. Was it better to simply sell the business now? Was there enough to it that a sale was plausible?

And what of Ashton? Surely selling the business would shut that ******** down, but would he truly find spite in it? Would he recoil in his hurt?

Alois doubted it.

„I know what to do,“ he answered back in kind. A quick slip around the counter and he found one of many pull-out drawers. Within the longest one he found a set of knives kept sharp for careful whittling, for diligent carving. He stole one away, smooth in its silvery sheen, and tucked it within the sleeve of his jacket. In shutting the drawer he passed Ashton with no attack, though he kept his eyes trained on the creature the entire time.

„Enjoy yourself, if you know what zat means.“ He started for the door once again, and this time he left the shop behind.

conga rats! you are now the proud new [temporary?] owner of Mount Me, ashton!

"You do realize, of course, that this is what I do? No hard feelings, really." Their smile was cuttingly insincere - or, at the very least, just sincere enough to tell they were pretty much full of s**t. No hard feelings was only true to the extent that Ashton saw no need to feel bothered by their actions.

"Find some sort of pleasure in your life again, alright? It seems like you need it." And then the door closed behind Alois, and Ashton was alone, and all-in-all they felt pretty damn good about everything.

fin! ashton is 100% down with this and expects alois to give them a good review if ever asked
