Bibliophile was a pleasant place and rapidly starting to become one of Nathaniel's more frequent haunts. He stood outside of it now, in the shade and temporary relief of the overhang keeping warm and dry in the ratty raincoat he'd brought.
In front of him, rain clattered on rooftops, cascaded over car fronts, and sent small rivers up and down the streets, but there was something pleasing about the scent of it and the feel of it. Nathaniel knew well that Jeremiah was wishing for more sunshine, and he also did not want the garden to be flooded - but still thunderstorms had always been a favorite.
Except Nathaniel's mind was more focused on the events of the past few days, less so on the rain, a slight frown on his face as he leaned back against the window of the bookstore, fingers tapping absently against one knee.

It was not so odd that something that looked like a marten came out from under the door of Bibliophile. What was likely odd was that it was black as pitch and it's eyes looked as if it had been blind for years. There was an annoyed chitter from him when he realized it was raining before he noticed someone else right there. Someone he knew! "Y'shouldn't be out in the rain like that, y'know," Gloom said, scurrying forward and winding himself through Nathaniel's legs.

Nathaniel didn't seem to notice the strange flickering shadows that ebbed out from under the doorway, his eyes focused on the pouring rain and the sounds that it made as it pattered on the rooftop. It wasn't until there was a peculiar chittering noise from down below that he tore his gaze away, frowning slightly.
A second later, the frown had turned into a surprised smile.
"Gloom," said Nathaniel pleasantly. "Hello there, how are you?"
He stretched down a hand towards the creature, in case he wanted to climb up. "I didn't expect to see you here."

Gloom let out a pleased noise, an almost purr, and was scrambling his way up along the young man's arm. This time there was a more solid weight to him, clearly real, and he was nuzzling his nose along Nathaniel's jaw. "Friends live here," he said, "Gloom like this this place." His tail swished along Nathaniel's back as he settled. "Gloom is-" There was a pause. "I am doing good. How are you?" Making that effort to speak properly. Kind of.

Nathaniel felt the warmth of the creature along his arm and then up against his shoulder, laughing slightly as Gloom pressed his face into his own. It was somewhat like having a cat - or a ferret - or something - all cuddly and eager.
"Live he - oh, you mean the Mercers," Nathaniel clarified. "Yes, they're very good people, I'm glad to know them."
Even if things were a mess at the moment, what with the ball and everything. He stroked the creature's shadowy head, smoothing fingers along the blackness and feeling the solidity of him with a certain amount of curiosity about it.
"I'm glad you're doing good, I'm doing good too," said Nathaniel. There was a pause, and then he added,
"Well, mostly. Still getting used to...everything."

"No, the Professor and his other live elsewhere. Sometimes he is here and teaches Gloom words." The marten settled comfortably against Nathaniel's neck, seemingly content to be exactly where he was. "Different friend lives here." Gloom blinked at Nathaniel, white eyes studying him. "Y'weren't a player character before but y'are now ..." His tail swished. "Y'world isn't the same anymore."

"Ohhhh," said Nathaniel, with an nod of understanding. "Okay, I gotcha now. They're good people too, I don't know who else lives here, but I'm glad you have friends."
His fingers patted Gloom's head, but his brows furrowed in confusion as he twisted his head to look at him.
"What do you mean? Because I glow?"

"Not just because y'glow ..." Gloom snuffled at Nathaniel's neck. "Y'smell different. Like where I'm from." The dark furred creature paused. "Not the Court but ... the rest of it."

Nathaniel's fingers paused on Gloom's neck, a frown touching his face; one of thought, not of annoyance.
"Do you mean the other place?"

"Gloom does." His head raised up, a soft rumble escaping from him. It was a purr and it was meant to be comforting because Nathaniel was frowning. The nuance of human expression sometimes escaped him. "Have y'been yet?"

Nathaniel tilted his head slightly so that the rumbling noise from Gloom's small body reverberated in his ear, somehow reassuring in spite of everything. He was silent for a moment, simply letting his fingers drift across the creature.
"Oh, you mean besides the ball?" Nathaniel shook his head. "Other than an accidental misstep on the way home one night, nah. I was there and back again in just a minute, so I dunno if that really counts."

"Gloom can take y'if y'want." The rumble continued, especially once fingers were continuing to drift across his fur. "Y'should know it so y'can be safer." Then he paused a moment. "Gloom can keep y'safe." A quiet chitter. "When Gloom is with ya."

Nathaniel considered this for a long moment, letting the sound of the rain ease his somewhat tangled mind. It was a strangely reassuring sound, familiar and heavy on the ground and on the rooftops of buildings and cars, pitter pattering and noisy.
"I think I do wanna go back," he said finally, Nathaniel taking a breath. "So if you go with me, I'd be obliged."

"Gloom will take y'there." His nose pressed to Nathaniel's cheek briefly before he was tucking his head underneath the young man's chin. "Keep y'hand on Gloom." There was a soft chitter. "... and say when."

Breathe, breathe, yes breathing was good. It wasn't like they were going into the fires of Mordor or trekking through a cave in the middle of a stormy, tempestuous ocean searching for a horcrux. They were just going to other Ashdown, that was it.
Nathaniel took a breath, straightening.
"Okay," he said, hand remaining where it was, "I'm ready."
